Title: Dozens of bomb threats by ‘Bitcoin scammers’ hit several US states
Post by: Cryptoshops on December 13, 2018, 07:53:15 PM
Several area businesses are receiving what appears to be a robo-email saying there is a bomb threat to their business unless they pay money in Bitcoins.  We have found no credible evidence any of these emails are authentic.

Do you mean a real explosive bomb to there business arena or is it some form of fancy name for an email being hacked. Well the seeking to be paid in bitcoin does not make them a bitcoin scammer do you be if they had requested for dollar you would tag them dollar scammers

The news is starting to hit major outlets:

https://abcnews.go.com/US/bomb-threats-demanding-bitcoin-funds-reported-country-authorities/story?id=59805500
https://nypost.com/2018/12/13/fake-bomb-threats-nationwide-were-part-of-bitcoin-export-plot/

Headlines are reading, "Bitcoin scammers send bomb threats across US" and "Bitcoin bomb threats: Dozens of major public buildings evacuated."

Sounds like some really great press for Bitcoin! :D

It is really sad that bitcoin's name got involved in such incident. This kind of incidents force the policy makers to believe that bitcoin is somewhat linked to the illegal matters. Not food for bitcoin and definitely not good for the community. I strongly condemn such kind of illegal and terror acts!

Those creating this hysteria might have been taking pages from this one, https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/apr/24/israel-michael-kadar-jewish-centre-bomb-threats.

At this point, we don't need this kind of publicity stunt, the market is suffering already, and this kind of news will put bitcoin in bad limelight and I'm sure that we will see another round of negative impact to the market.

I guess the idea of bomb  threats also stems off from the bomb threats to at least three past US presidents. The idea of threatening people may be a scam or may also be a threat to be taken seriously. Either way a proper investigation may have to be launched and the perpetrators of this snide comments and threats are found and made to face the law. A good way to throw out the people who give crypto a bad name.

I would have thought you lot would be celebrating a public demonstration of how useful a decentralized currency can be.

Great for buying drugs, ransom demands or whatever racket you want. Bitcoin rocks.

I hope whoever are responsible for this get tracked down soon. I mean, the NSA is constantly infringing on everyone's privacy anyway, they might as well make the best use out of it. Terror threats like this is one of their primary motivations after all.

At this point, we don't need this kind of publicity stunt, the market is suffering already, and this kind of news will put bitcoin in bad limelight and I'm sure that we will see another round of negative impact to the market.

It's bad press for sure, but I don't think it'll affect the market too much. I don't think there are many speculators left that will dump just because of this.

False Flag?

Yeahhh, seems like it. There's just no indicators that the threats are credible.

Here is an update:
https://www.businessinsider.com/bitcoin-scammers-are-sending-bomb-threat-emails-to-millions-worldwide-2018-12
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2018/dec/13/bomb-threats-across-us-and-canada-demanding-bitcoin-payment-appear-to-be-hoax-authorities-say

And I checked some of the email threats. LMAO, whats up with the disclaimers at the end 🤣

If an explosion occured and the authorities notice this letter:
We arent the terrorist organization and dont assume any liability for explosions in other buildings.

I am sure these are just threats out to scare people who can easily be poked and joked upon. Of course, no threat should be taken lightly but they are now learning that these threats are preposterous at their very best. As to Bitcoin, this can be a bad publicity as no brand would want to be associated with anything like a threat or a bomb. However, as they say, bad publicity can still be a publicity though of course this is not what we might be needing right now that Bitcoin on the dip. Some scammers and hackers are now turning Bitcoin into a big joke but when the bull run can happen next year (hopefully) then everybody will have a field day full of roses.

Wait, so they're saying they can stop the bombings from happening if you send them Bitcoin, but actually aren't the ones who would conduct the explosions? Lmao this sounds like the work of some random idiot. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets tracked down in the next few days.

Yea sounds like a bunch of kids who havent really thought through the finer
details of their threats.

Its a tricky one to deal with on the ground. The threats have to be taken seriously
initially and noone would just pay up straight away.

I hate the way bitcoin is being used like this, not good publicity.

It will not surprise me if some anti-bitcoin group are doing this, because they know bad publicity like this would turn more people against Bitcoin. I hope the authorities and some white hat hackers might be able to track these people and make an example of them.

People are quick to judge the technology, but they forget that the technology is just another form of money. These people could have demanded a cash drop and they would never be able to catch them. <Cash <circulated> are more anonymous than Bitcoin>  :P

Could this be related to the teen who saved up hundreds of thousands of $ in BTC who was then nabbed after authorities found out about his schemes? I think there is a good correlation between the two, and that's the first thing that sprang to mind upon reading these headlines. It's certainly painting a bad image for bitcoin being linked with scammers and bomb threats, and good thing no one wants to pay up.

This is nothing new, there are so many emails going around requesting bitcoin in exchange for something. Bomb threats, hack threats, malware, soon it will be to prevent world war III

If so, then that would be royally stupid of them. Would you really risk being branded and prosecuted as an actual terrorist just because you hate some kind of internet money? Lol. There are more effective methods that don't get you life in prison.

It is always disturbing to see such news on individuals who are using bitcoin for all the bad intentions that we can think of at the moment. In these bad times where some people have lost interest in bitcoin, I think it is time we need good news like the use of bitcoin in making donations to charity.

These groups are definitely one of the negative side of bitcoin economy.
Bomb threats and coin laundering are the worst enemy to credibility of
bitcoin users.

The classic layout for students. Well, you think, who in 2018 will be engaged in such nonsense as extortion of money through e-mails with threats to blow up a bomb? These events took place 5 years ago and even then it seemed something stupid and ridiculous.
