Title: Bitcoin Core installed, block chain downloaded, NO address in wallet
Post by: seanr22a on December 21, 2018, 09:08:56 PM
I've installed Bitcoin Core and have the block chain downloaded. After download finished it has been running for a total of two days now. My problem is when trying to use the built in wallet I have no address. I've been reading several guides and they all say it should be listed when viewing Receiving address.

This is how it looks. As you can see there is no address. Am I doing some rookie mistake or is something wrong ?

Try this:
Close "Debug window", then click the Receive tab, enter Label: "my first address", and click "Request payment".
This will create your first Receiving Address.

Make sure to backup your wallet.dat before funding it.

Embarrassing simple  :-[  I wonder why the guides don't say anything about this  ???

Many thanks !

Until recently, the "Receiving addresses" window had a "New" button. That probably explains why most people assume it's still there.

It still has the button?
I'm sure I used it yesterday, on 0.17.0...

Edit: ahh I have 0.16.0.0 (did it go in the later one - I can't actually broadcast the blockchain anyway so don't see a need to upgrade)?

I mean, there was quite some drama about running anything younger than v16.3, due to the "bug" that was found in v14-v16?

If you only occasionally run Bitcoin Core, then it's not necessary to run out and upgrade it right this second. However, you should upgrade it before you next run it.

- You should not run any version of Bitcoin Core other than 0.16.3*. Older versions should not exist on the network. If you know anyone who is running an older version, tell them to upgrade it ASAP.

Might still be smart to upgrade to v17.0.... Although, if you're not running a full node, this bug might be not quite as harmful/have the potential to be harmful at all..?

The bug won’t do anything to my computer. I have a node running the I just can’t access the router to open a port :).

The flaw does nothing to stored funds and the wallet software relies on the longest chain. It’s advised to update but I like to wait a bit before doing so as if I don’t, my antivirus generally starts killing drives...

You may want to create a segwit address. This is easy to do, just put a tick in the create native segwit address box.
You might like to have a legacy address as well, so that older wallets can send you coins.
