Post by: cokroalif on December 23, 2018, 07:21:15 AM
maybe this is a silly question, but I am really curious, I searched the search site not to find an answer, maybe I should ask all the members in the right forum

AFAIK, No limit

If you wanna know some of the merits that have been sent so far you can check it here https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit;stats

Here is a good dashboard where you can check all kinds of statistics for Merit.

1. What is the total supply of merit
There is not total supply, merit is not crypto  :)

New smerits (sent-able merit) are generated each month, they are given to merit source ( most active members, must have some quality required). They ( merit source) will give merit to quality posts.
Quote from theymos

Quote
If you want to be a merit source:

 1. Be a somewhat established member.
 2. Collect TEN posts written in the last couple of months by other people that have not received nearly enough merit for how good they are, and post quotes for them all in a new Meta thread. The point of this is to demonstrate your ability to give out merit usefully.
 3. We will take a look at your history and maybe make you a source.

The quality of posting is/should be the main factor influencing the generation of sMerits. Merit sources have their awards replaced in 30 days, and every sMerit awarded creates the potential for almost another complete new sMerit. If post quality is low, then awarders will not be giving out as many sMerits, and the merit growth will slow. So, if you want more merits in the system, the answer is simple, increase the number of interesting and useful posts and threads. This will encourage the awarders to be more generous, and it will improve the quality of the boards.

There are no total supply of merits available if Im not mistaken what we have is the merit sources currently there are 120 merit sources please refer to this link for more details-- https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit;stats=sources

Currently the limit is 22055 sMerit per 30 days
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit;stats=sources

But, if I remember correctly I read somewhere that theymos can create any number of new merits and distribute them out how he sees fit.

OP is asking for Merit, not sMerit. The total Merit supply can be summed up from the data in Open scraped data of all the users - SQL Lite DB - 2.481.270 users (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5066192.0).

As for sMerits: theymos airdropped about 600k in January, 300k sMerit has been sent, creating another 150k sMerit in the process, and sources have added at most 200k sMerit. Many accounts have been banned, which reduces the total supply again.
I would estimate around 4-500k sMerit to be available at the moment. Merit isn't scarce, good posts are!

This is the crux of the matter. I'm here again with 200+ sMerit to give away while I listen to Joan Baez. I'm listening to Diamonds and Rust at the moment, and all I am finding is rust. Come on guys give me some diamonds.

I figure you mean sMerit, not merits really, but just in case, as @LoyceV indicated, the sum of the most recent provided dataset by @piggy add’s up to:
nUsers 2.481.270 -> Number of Merits (non-sendable) 9.209.690.

Now those are Merits (non-sendable). Sendable Merits have roughly the following context:

* Total sent sMerits: 285.312 as of last Friday (in 136.054 TXs to 25.328 people from 19.013 forum members).
* Current total sMerits sent per week (by Merit Sources and others) : In the 3.500 – 3.800 area /week.
* There are roughly 38k sMerits in the hands of forum members that have not been originated in the initial sMerit Airdrop (see re: [TOP-200] Members who have a lot of earned sMerits (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5080637.msg48682919#msg48682919)).
* If we include the airdropped sMerit, the sum rises to around 450k (see  re: [TOP-200] Members who have a lot of earned sMerits (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5080637.msg48495421#msg48495421)).
* Merit Sources are capable of distributing up to 22.055 sMerits per 30 days (aside from that, users may too as indicates above).

Bare in mind that many of airdropped still available sMerits may not really be in game, as they may be in the hands of accounts that do not care for merit, are not active, have been banned, etc.

Theymos can generate as many as needed.

The real question is how many good posts do we have!
More good posts = More merits (sMerits(1/2 sent Merits) + generated by Theymos).

Well I must say I don't think that the total supply of merit should be of importance keep doing your part by been constructive and educative in your post count the forum will continue to do there part to genuinely see that merit are distributed to members

Taking the data  from  from https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit;stats=sources that shows currently there are 22055 source sMerits are available

and putting this number to  Number of Merits generated (mathematically) (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5033235.msg) there should be 44108 merits should flow every month assuming every body is not hoarding any sMerits and all the previous airdropped sMerits are exhausted.

There is no exact total supply of merits in this forum where theymos can change the total of merit that will be dustribited to merit sources to reward contributors in the forum. If you take the data of the merit sent then you'll probably the the current supply of merit. Take note that total supply will change if theymos decide to increase it or decrease.

What a funny coincidence. I was listening to Prince's Diamonds and Pearls. No pearls found either tho.

I feel your "pain"... I have like 100+ sMerit waiting for a good home. Sadly, all I see are people posting on dead threads, posting on megathreads, posting reworded answers given by the 10 people posting before them and posting questions about merit ::)

Maybe I am just looking at the wrong boards? ???

There is always hope on Christmas.  Merit is as hard to find as Santa.  Hopefully everyone is out spreading good cheer and enjoying time with the people they care about.  It has been one of the better Christmas Holidays for me.  No drama and time to do the things I love.  Can't ask for much more.

Merit is as hard to find as Santa.

Not quite. It has been calculated above that there are a couple hundred thousands sendable merits, and while some might be stuck in banned and inactive accounts, there is still a large amount in circulation.

Just keep contributing with helpful content.
And also check out the merit give aways available to newbie accounts.

Didn't realize there were merit giveaways, thank's for the tip.  Happy Holidays.

That would be the general method to give an opportunity to anyone who is willing to play that role, is a somewhat established member, and can prove though the designed process (and history) that he can detect meritable/undermerited post with a fair criteria.

Nevertheless, most of the merit sources were (I think) appointed without explicitly applying, by means of direct assignment on behalf of @theymos, based on his criteria for suitable candidates, possibly with the aid of some data at some point to pinpoint candidates in specific boards.

Title: The Bitcoin Talk merit system
Post by: Jet Cash on December 27, 2018, 08:37:38 AM
For anyone who doesn't understand the Bitcoin Talk merit system, I wrote and article on my merit source blog. It gives a description of the system from the perspective of a merit source.
https://talkmerit.com/the-source/index.php/articles/the-bitcoin-talk-merit-system

Let me know if you think it needs to be updated.

Now I'm going to be a racist - I'm going to start a promotion to give double merits to any Venezuelan who creates a thread through the Fit to Talk English project. It needs to be about the use of crypto in Venezuela, preferably about Dash or possibly El Petro.

Some people have received the red trust tag(s) as a merit abuser. Can you add in your article how can a member get those tags? Maybe this will be useful for newbies in the future to keep their reputation in the forum. :)
