Post by: irukandji on January 02, 2019, 04:10:57 AM
Hi all, some time ago I had some trouble with an electrum wallet, where I tried at add an extra word to the seed.
Are there any services that might be able to help me. Reputable ones?

I am happy to pay if someone can help. There will be enough in there to make it worth while.  :)

I set up an electrum wallet, and it seemed to give me the option to add a custom word, which i did. So there were 13 words and the word I added was not from the pool of words.
So I tried to put the seed into a wallet but nothing showed.

TBH it's a bit of a ballsup as i wasn't 100% sure which 12 word seed I used before the word i added, so i tried all my seeds

 Ok make sure you have latest version from electrum.org then you need to restore your wallet with seed. was the word you added i mean the 13th the password?

Hi try doing this site and tell me if it works. Just leave the custom password blank and might work.

13 word seed phrases where the standard for Electrum 2.0 - 2.6.4:

https://bitcoinelectrum.com/frequently-asked-questions/#why-wont-electrum-accept-my-seed-when-i-attempt-to-restore-my-wallet-from-it

They switched to 12 word seed phrases with 2.7.0.

You should be able to restore your wallet with the 13 seed words by downloading one of the older Electrum versions from the official archives:

https://download.electrum.org/

2.6.4 should do the job:

https://download.electrum.org/2.6.4/

Once you've successfully recovered your old wallet you'll want to send your coins to a new wallet, generated using the latest version of Electrum, as there are some known issues / exploits with the older versions. Don't forget to backup the seed words of the new wallet (should be 12 words) before sending your coins there!

Assuming you haven't moved those coins since before the Bitcoin hard forks (August 2017) you'll also have some forked coins to claim. There are plenty of threads that should help with that, but if anything be extra careful with fork wallets because there have been many cases of malware surrounding those (ie. clear out your Bitcoins before trying to claim fork coins and don't install any fork coin wallets on your main PC -- use a VM or an old laptop that you aren't using anymore).

Are you having issues remembering the seed or are you a 100% sure of the words used? If you know what was the mnemonic then downloading an old version like heretik said would do the trick.

If you cant remember the exact seed, you could use btcrecover, its compatible with old electrum versions as well : https://github.com/gurnec/btcrecover/blob/master/docs/Seedrecover_Quick_Start_Guide.md

If I understand you correctly, you have the 12 words that were randomly generated by electrum + 1 extra word that you have chosen. If this is the case, then you can restore the wallet like this:

1. Click File -> New/Restore
2. Give a name for the wallet -> Next
3. Standard Wallet -> Next
4. I already have a seed -> Next
5. Enter your 12 word seed
6. Click "Options"
7. Check "Extend this seed with custom words" -> OK -> Next
8. Type your 1 extra word that you have chosen -> Next
9. Type a password for your new wallet -> Next
10. If the seed is correct you should have your wallet with you funds back

Also make sure you have the latest Electrum version (download only from https://electrum.org/#download)

Electrum has always kept its backward compatibility when it comes to seed words and things like that. they even keep the short lived features like the versioning for private keys!
in other words unless there is some sort of strange bug uniquely encountered by OP, there should not be any problem with importing old seeds in newest versions. the wallet will recognize them.

The OP doesn't have a 13 word seed but a 12 word seed + 1 custom word (extended seed). This is very different to a 13 word seed!

Well I'll be damned.

@OP keep us posted whether this solved your issue, the solution provided by Robot1982 is far simpler and preferable to what I suggested above.

- If you know the seed but have forgotten the custom word then the custom word can be bruteforced assuming you have a good idea of what it might be.

- If you don't know the seed but do know the custom word then no one can help you.

So which of the above is it? If you're sure you know the custom word but didn't write down the seed then no one can help you. If it's the first scenario then try contacting dave of wallet recovery services.
