Title: Forum innovations in the last 12 months.
Post by: TMAN on January 22, 2019, 03:30:26 PM
There are untold amounts of negativity here right now, people kicking off about Merit & Trust, cryptohunter and itomarketing going on about how life is unfair etc etc. But I just want to comment on the innovation - Theymos has remodeled DT into a self governing system and the Merit system is here to allow the community to show appreciation and allow many of us to notice posts we would never of necessarily seen before and recently he has implemented grin as a means of payment on the forum - all in all more innovation and action than I have seen in years.

Bottom line, I think everyone should take a step back and appreciate the forum is trying to push forward, adapt and grow in a way that doesn't make it self implode. Sure, not everyone will agree with everything - you can't please all the people all the time, but thinking about Grin - not the most amazing coin to me personally but instead of appreciating the step forward in taking another currency I was more interested in the price and circulating supply.

I'm not the only one who will post here with positive things, but it has to be said - innovation is moving a shit ton faster than the new forum software.

LOCAL RULE..............................................
cryptohunter and itomarketing may not post in this thread.

EDIT After Post #2, any new accounts cannot post here either, just thought of fools spinning up alts to moan - this thread needs no negative fools.

Edit - also the below!
Also there is the new team working on locked accounts recovery.

I’ve never had a problem with how the forum is run. I got into crypto in May 2014, only registered here in September 2014. I’ve learnt so much here & I really feel it’s the most helpful, user friendly place on the internet for Bitcoin’ers (is that a word?).

I have no issues with anything DT related, Merit related or whatever.

I’m just here every day enjoying myself :)

There are untold amounts of negativity here right now...
It did not happen over night. I noticed in the forum people are searching for others mistake. We are waiting for others to make mistakes so that we can red tag them, we are more comfortable to leave negative than positive. We are always looking for the bad sides in members. We are feeling happy (perhaps) when we see someone is making mistake.

This should be a community to inspire good works and help others. When we see someone is doing something wrong, we should correct them. We should give them enough space to be a good man. This should be a forum where seniors support juniors, juniors support seniors. Everyone support everyone. We should work together. Are we really doing that?

When you focus on finding bad in someone you eventually find one. There is a saying...

Disagree on that point, Theymos seems to be backing self regulation and decentralization Merit and the new DT system are fine examples of this, but with this there is a responsibility for those involved to embrace it - if you check collectibles or hardware you will see lots of positive trust being handed out probably 20x more positive trust interactions than negative. Scammers though are more prevalent in other parts of the forum and people need to be made aware of nefarious individuals ill use an example most in here could appreciate, Imagine Cryptohunter approached you to buy some widgets you were selling - could you imagine the total shitshow that negotiation would be? now as they have a number of red tags - any even minutely sane person would click and find out the user in question is certifiably insane and just stick them on ignore. Other examples of people farming accounts, selling accounts or even someone who has actually completed a scam and another user has actually lost out, look - its not doom and gloom if you are a part of the community and want to be here for being here and not just to earn a quick buck!

I joined the forum it was a few days before the merit system was implemented. I didn't care much about my account, activity merit or whatever. I didn't even knew what was a merit when I received my first one (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2885058.msg29953079#msg29953079).

Few weeks later I discovered how this forum is a really cool place.

Then I thought merit system wasn't a nice implementation, as it was possible to keep merit circulating only in closed circles. But I decided to keep using the forum anyway, and then I realized that I was wrong: Merit is not circulating in closed circles, and anyone can really rank up and earn lots of merits.

After that, I saw some nice improvements in the forum, as you already mentioned. As this forum is very big and it is working fine, every move must be cautious and slow.

Spammers/scammers certainly won´t like those new improvements. And that´s good.

Theymos mentioned somewhere that these are like just trial run to see how the community reacts maybe he is having more innovations to implement in the near future.

As far now the Merit and new DT system works perfectly.

It has to be said that for all the bitching in Meta and shitposting in altcoins and penny scamming in digital goods, life goes on in the boards that actually matter, like Development & Technical Discussion or the more "upscale" parts of Marketplace. Well, it would be nice if Bitcoin Discussion could be reclaimed too.

It's almost as if the forum has split in two parts, with the garbage part serving as a self-imposed newbie jail, minus the few smart newbies on the tech boards.

I suspect that some of the problems have been caused  by the current state of the crypto market. Sideways movements are not very exciting. There have been a lot of innovations in the market, and the Brave browser is one that interests me. I suspect there will be a bit more activity and price movement in the not too distant future, and that could cause an increase in "real" posting. Another side effect is the reduction in the earnings potential from signature spamming, and hopefully that will continue to decline.

There are many more small changes and innovations, that If you put together you actually see how much work was done by theymos just for this one year:
Here are those I remember:

- new report history stats accessed after 300 good reports
- hompgraphs are converted automatically to Latin, so plagiarism cannot be missed.
- captcha fix for logging using tor( bypassing)
- no signatures in the Ivory tower and serious discussion
- forum segwit support
- some new data dupms
- some new moderators
- "last edit" for mobile devices
- the 24hour-no-delete  rule in the Altcoin section

... I'm probably missing some other ones but those are enough

Great points, when you look at it all together it shows Theymos has been a busy boy.

Yeah forum is trying to push forward and its growing fast. But its really annoying when we see some common faces trolling everywhere. Its true that no one wants to get tagged but we can't let anyone to do scam or inspiring others. I think DT members are not feeling so good to tag someone. They do this to keep the forum scam free.

Basically its a common habit for some human that they ignore to accept their mistakes. Everytime they do mistakes and think its fare. Thats the reason why they are making meaningless arguments everytime.

Forgetting all these we got many new improvements..

# Inclusive DT selection system
# new more merit sources
# new moderators
# new payment option (grin)
# forum website under full ddos protection by cloudfare.

Yep, and we've discussed this before and never could find a solution that didn't include Theymos hiring more mods who'd be more aggressive in deleting shitposts, which would be a difficult job anyway even if mods were added.  The garbage comes in at a rate such that you'd need mods working around the clock to monitor all the new posts for quality.  Either that or by implementing some serious sig campaign reform.

This past year was kind of crazy in terms of new things being done here.  I'm hoping the insane trolling dies down in Meta and that the numbskulls learn that they have to obey local rules regardless of what section it is.  A better solution would be to allow self-moderated threads in Meta, because it's way too easy for a single troll to derail what would otherwise be a productive thread.  How many times have we seen that in the past month?  I haven't read any reasons why members shouldn't have the option to moderate their own threads in Meta.

- the 24hour-no-delete  rule in the Altcoin section

What is this specifically? Can you point to additional information about this?

I think this rule he is referring to is not on the Altcoin board, but in Services and  Bounties (Altcoins) board.

Once you made a comment there, you cannot delete it for the next 24hours, to prevent bump.

Some users were bumping the thread and deleting old bumps..

Read the whole thread >
OK, the 24-hour limit is now in place in the sections that people mentioned.

I've made a video of the bots bumping : refreshing the Ann thread every 2-3 seconds old posts get deleted new posts appearing nonstop :

I think Theymos did a great job by adding the merit and new DT system. It might not be perfect and some things will probably be adjusted but it feels a lot more decentralized and community driven. All the current DT/DT2 'issues' will work themselves out eventually.

Bottom line, I think everyone should take a step back and appreciate the forum is trying to push forward, adapt and grow in a way that doesn't make it self implode.

I must say,  the forum is growing very fast and the innovations are been appreciated by those who truly understands the uses of those additional features. Guessing theymos next option now is to look into enabling self-moderated thread on meta and giving us an official guidelines to leaving trust feedbacks. These are the two hottest topics right now and doing justice to them will go a long way.
I must say the implementation of the merit system has the highest impact on forum (from my view) and that's my fav of all the innovations and my least is the minor selfmod enhancement. (although it's too early to judge so I'll give it sometime)

You forgot two things:
- A wave of demotion aimed at Junior Members in September last year (2018).
- A new structure of Trust system.

- A new structure of Trust system.

As far i understand it right the new Trust system is on a Monthly testing phase and theymos watching it how it works !

But yeb we can add that to the list i guess !

There has also been innovations in the forum interface, a MORE option was added to compile helpful links and support and make it easier to access for the community. It contains three links now:
Buy a copper membership
Support for hacked/lost accounts
About donations
I predict more helpful links will be added as time goes.

That wave of demotion is exactly what Lafu mentioned above.  It was the 1-merit rule.  In addition, the trust system changes have been mentioned by TalkStar:

# Inclusive DT selection system

I think OP ought to exercise his self-moderation powers on your post, since you don't seem to have read or understood what other members have already written.

Most of innnovations of the forum during the last 12 months have been mentioned above.
Therefore, I don't repeat them all here.
For me, I found two innovations:
1. The cost of Copper Membership will raise considerably  (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5097960.0)
- Higher fee will help reducing Copper Spambies.
- Additional payment gate added, in Grincoin, and the rate will be changed and set manually by theymos. The innovation mentioned in previous post, but the post did not mention about the manual set-up rate in Grincoin.
Current rate:
- At BTC rate:
Code:
0.00675676 BTC
Full details are there: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=credit;promote
- At Grin rate:
Code:
2.252253333 grin
Full guide is there:
 DO NOT POST SESC LINKS

2. [New Feature] "Last edit" to be shown as text on mobile. FIXED! 10x Theymos:) (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5094850.0)
There are difference to see editing time on mobile devices and desktop computers/ laptops.
For the later ones, readers will see editing time when they move their computer mouses to the publishing time.
The new feature is much helpful to detect scam efforts when there is lack of archive sometime.

Yeah maybe it looks like repetitive there. But i beleive recent DT selection process is inclusive enough. Where previous one was centralized and new one is decentralized. We are able to put our vote to elect our favourite member  :)
