Title: Bitcoin with capital "B" and bitcoins with lowercase "b"
Post by: BitcoinGirl.Club on January 24, 2019, 03:01:05 PM
New learning.

I just noticed this in the advertising section of the forum.

The Bitcoin software, network, and concept is called "Bitcoin" with a capitalized "B". Bitcoin currency units are called "bitcoins" with a lowercase "b" -- this is often abbreviated BTC.

Meaning when I am paying someone in Bitcoin then I am sending him bitcoins  :)

We are Bitcoiners and bitcoins are our currency.

Thank you.

Indeed. Just wondering to ask, did you know these two terminology before? Honestly speaking it's a new learning for me though.

I always thought about the plural of Bitcoin (correct name is bitcoins which we know now).

Now I am thinking it's bitcoins which represents both singular and plural logically I guess. Can anyone correct me?

The "B" signifies our existence, the Bitcoiner always believes in it even when the bear market is still going on. We Bitcoiner use bitcoin as a currency like FIAT. We use our money to trade whatever we want. Great Bitcoiners!

And also Bitcoin is most commonly used for the term of the technology itself while bitcoin is as you mentioned.

Technically yes but practically no. When you ask me

== to pay you bitcoins then I understand you are talking about Bitcoin : Both technically and practically its correct
== to pay you Bitcoin then I understand you are talking about Bitcoin : Technically in-correct but practically correct.

Hope I make sense LOL

Sometimes on this forum i will used them based on the way OP used them to frame my post but now i have realize when to use the "B"(Bitcoin)  and the "b"(bitcoin) thanks for the share...

Thank you for sharing your knowledge about this , we have some mistake that we haven't notice and should be corrected just like this one. Bitcoin and bitcoins , at first you will be confused but if you try to look for their real meaning then you will clearly understand the difference between the two.

Can't you just use the abbreviation like if you want to pay, you can send him BTCs. I think we make the B uppercase in respect to it being a proper noun "Bitcoin" unlike cryptocurrency which is a general term for all. But then again upper or lowercase it all sound the same. You still can send it to anyone anywhere.

These semantics are so important and yet so unimportant at the same time.

Probably best to just keep swapping all the B's about for maximum confusion.

It is described in this site described in the bitcoin site "Bitcoin - with capitalization, is used when describing the concept of Bitcoin, or the entire network itself. e.g. "I was learning about the Bitcoin protocol today."bitcoin - without capitalization, is used to describe bitcoins as a unit of account. e.g. "I sent ten bitcoins today."; it is also often abbreviated BTC or XBT."

Source: https://bitcoin.org/en/vocabulary#bit

The sentence used by @pamoldar is a great example of how to and when to use Bitcoin with a capital B and with a small letter b.

It's like Kilobits and Kilobytes

kbps
KBps

kbps is 1000 bits per second
KBps is 1024 bytes per second

1 Kilobyte = 8 Kilobit hehe

It's all confusion if you do not know the terms properly.

I guess it matters in the "grammar nazi" sense. I always make the distinction myself (Bitcoin as the protocol, bitcoins as the currency unit) but I would never correct other people. Who cares, right? It reminds of "You say tomato, I say tomahto." (https://www.phrases.org.uk/bulletin_board/47/messages/878.html) :)

I didn't even know that. Thanks OP, I've learned something today.

I used to write Bitcoin when I was talking about the currency because it just felt right that I'm treating it like a name or a brand. We're writing company names and product names with a capital letter so we should appreciate our favourite cryptocurrency by doing the same. I'll keep in mind that it's incorrect but it's going to be difficult to stop.

Yes, coins (currency) are low case, unless its the beginning of a sentence. This is easier to remember in countries that use someone's name as the coin name, because you remember that unless you are referring to the person, you have to use low case.

That is why you are supposed to say US dollar and not Dollar. But of course we have the symbol ₿ (BTC) just like the dollar has $, the euro €, the pound sterling £, etc.

Example: In the Euro zone, they use the euro (€) as currency.

Or: "If I could get 1 satoshi for every time someone mentioned Satoshi, I would be rich!"

Just my two satoshis...

I think it's very clear, but now cryptocurrencies basically have code, such as Bitcoin BTC, Ethereum ETH, Bitcoin Cash BCH, all have short codes. I want to know how to go to Google naturally, I don't want to know if it doesn't matter what he is.

Correct. When we say Bitcoin, Bitcoins, bitcoin, bitcoins we are basically meaning the same currency. So it does not matter. It's just to have the knowledge.

When telling people what amounts to pay or receive I just type BTC instead of writing out bitcoin. I wish more people would use smaller units like mBTC, I know people refer to satoshis a lot though when talking in really small amounts.  Bitcoin should always be capitalized anyways because of how important it is in the world :)

Same here  . i dont type the whole actual word because i find too long and i feel too lazy to do it lol  . sometimes i used the word mbtc when i refer to smaller amounts of btc aside from the term satoshi  . we know the importance of btc and cryptos but its okay to use your own term or spellings because that didnt hurt the reputation of btc at all  . its up to the reader if he will understand it or not but google is their friend  .

People generally refer to the network and protocol as the blockchain technology and the currency as bitcoins, varying rhe capitalization of the first letter.
The idea of, Bitcoin for the protocol, and bitcoin for the currency would not catch up easily, but is worth sharing.

I totally agree that it doesn't matter. People sometimes make up weird rules that are completely unnecessary and might even make more damage to the community than help it. Making Bitcoin more confusing is definitely not going to help with the eventual mass adoption.

Thanks for the info, I never gave it much thought! I'll try to follow the rule from now on. However, I think that we can write "bitcoin" as well, it's not always plural. For example, I received 1 bitcoin from a friend before, not Bitcoin, right?
I am also wondering whether we have to write the abbreviation only with capitalized letters (BTC, not btc) or it does not matter. And another thing is whether similar is true for other names of cryptocurrencies. While it seems logical that this should hold for LTC, for instance, I am not sure about Ethereum. We don't even use it in plural, right? "ethereums" sounds too weird to be right.

Yes you are right. I myself got to know about this fact about 3-5 months ago. The article I read differentiated it as Bitcoin being a software/technology and bitcoin as an asset/currency.
Example: I have 1 bitcoin in my Bitcoin wallet. (Not true, but I wish it was true  ;D )

Thanks for the info, I never gave it much thought! I'll try to follow the rule from now on. However, I think that we can write "bitcoin" as well, it's not always plural. For example, I received 1 bitcoin from a friend before, not Bitcoin, right?

Any abbreviations should always be mentioned in capitalized letters. Example: I have sent him 1 BTC and not 1 btc. The same rule applies to all the cryptocurrencies.
While I am not sure about the plural thing but according to me we should be using the plural term only when the amount is greater than 1.
Example: I sent you 1.5 bitcoins. You sent me 0.5 bitcoin

That's really interesting. None could've thought of such a difference between the 'B' and 'b' in bitcoin. How about the forked coins of bitcoin be indicated. Whether those coins too have similar nomenclature or it doesn't have anything to do with 'B' and 'b'.

It really is not matter how we call it. Bitcoin/bitcoins is a brand now. If I say bitcoins and Bitcoin, both means same for the community. The discovery was interesting when I first saw it and then thought to share it. It turns out that a lot of us yet to discover it after even over 10 years.

It is like Idiot with capital "I" and idiots in lower case. It does not matter much what case is used.
LOL I liked the example very much.
So when should we use "Idiot" and "idiots"? I hope we are not conflicting the number.

Lol. That made it a little more interesting as i also haven't paid attention to the use of a capital and lowercase "B". But it makes sense. Or probably i just base it on how the term is being used by the person pertaining to it.
I do not blame you. There are a lot of things we don't know and don't expect that you should know everything. It was interesting for me too to know the terms first.

I am glad this topic helps.
Thanks for sharing this mate. I've been using the word Bitcoin in every sentence I made same with Altcoins because I treat them as an important subject. Though not needed to be highlighted but I feel comfortable using capital letters at the beginning of the word most especially to crypto. Good to know there is something like this thread that teaches each and every enthusiasts about the correct usage of the upper and lower case in the word Bitcoin.

This is how we stay unique from others. Even a 'B' has got varied representation on the same word mentioned for different indications. Though some users have made fun of it, this is truly a new information to users who aren't that aware about bitcoin as well about its techncal functionalities.

I didn't even know this. But i guess it makes sense that they are separated. The whole concept is Bitcoin, but the currency is bitcoins. Thanks for the info!

Interesting stuff. I have always been  confused by  the difference. I noticed well known bitcoiners using the terms differently in the past but i didnt understand why back then

It is more like Ethereum (the network) and ether is the currency.

New learning.

I just noticed this in the advertising section of the forum.
Quote
The Bitcoin software, network, and concept is called "Bitcoin" with a capitalized "B". Bitcoin currency units are called "bitcoins" with a lowercase "b" -- this is often abbreviated BTC.

This is also new learning for me, I didn't think before that there is a distinction between Bitcoin and bitcoin, maybe I will use the words Bitcoin and bitcoin correctly in the discussion in the thread

Make it sense. Thanks for sharing, just now learned something new about Bitcoin. Usually I didn't care about capital "B" or lowercase "b" due to lack of knowledge. I think this explanation is appropriate although I will not consider big mistake if someone use Bitcoin instead of bitcoin or use bitcoin instead of Bitcoin. However thanks once again for share something new.

I don't think many people care about that though. Yes it does make a lot of sense but for me, i wouldn't concern myslef that much with such small technicalities. It's not that hard to understand, based on the context of the sentence, if people are referring to "Bitcoin" Or "bitcoins".

It doesn't matter on how you write or type the word bitcoin it's either capital "B" or lowercase "b" because for me we dont need to make any argument as long as we understand what we are talking or what we are doing. We don't have to make an issue for the correct usage of capital and lowercase of letter remember that we are business man not a english teacher.

Bitcoin with a capital letter "B" and bitcoin with the initial lowercase "b" in my opinion are actually the same and the most important thing in reading and saying sounds the same.
but it's also important to know the difference between uppercase and lowercase letters in bitcoin because they have meaning that we don't realize, but whether it matters and I will try to learn it thanks to your information.

Just landed on this thread.
I certainly did not know about the difference as I have been referring to "Bitcoin" as a currency for a while now... quite confusing thou.
But I don't know why they just don't call the bitcoin blockchain maybe "Bitcoin Network" and then the currency/coins remain as "Bitcoins"
Just like we see "Ethereum" for the network and "Ethers" for the coins
