Title: Block erupter - changing the chip
Post by: Jayjay04 on March 11, 2014, 03:59:59 AM
I am wondering if it would be possible to replace the block erupter chip with another one, like the one's from bitfury ? Or perhaps the new asicminer chips that are coming...?

Anyone ever try replacing the chip on these with a better one ?

Thx

Thats what I found...... really the chip architecture would be different... but you can upgrade the clockspeed though.
heres a webpage that I found on changing the crystal and resistor....FWIW...I am sure there are more in depth pages and forum posts though.

Really isn't something anyone can do just like that, but would be sweet to have a block erupter with 20 times the hashpower :)

That's what I thought also...

If the replacement chip is the same size, why wouldn't it be possible ?
If someone is an expert into micro-electronic please help us understand if it's possible or not ?

Thx

It's possible, but it's like putting a Ford 6.2 V8 in a Prius.  It's possible, but you're basically rebuilding the Prius from the ground up to put a V8 in it.

Ok I see, great metaphor !

When manufacturing, they have everything streamlined so that they use the least amount of labor/power/time to put it together.  Swapping chip, if upgrading from say Avalon 1 to Avalon 2, it might not be too bad.  If you are trying to stick chip from a different maker, then it would be massive amount of work.

It would be just like sticking a V8 in a prius as HellDriverUK said, and it might end up costing more than a Lexus in terms of work time and other costs...

Sell it and buy something new would be a better and cheaper way to go.
