Post by: thecoinbeginner on January 29, 2019, 08:13:59 AM
Hello all,

I have some USDT but don't want to keep it on exchange, any suggestion for me to keep it safe?

I heard that there are some cryptocurrency hardware wallets, do they support USDT?

Thank you for your help!

AFAIK there are 2 kinds of Tether, and one is an ERC20, so can be stored on any Eth wallet.

Since i've never used USDT though i don't really know how to say if what you have is an eth token or not...

If you have erc20 usdt, you can store it in ledger nano. If not, I don't know any hardware Wallet that can store omine layer token...

However, I strongly advice you to sell it and buy some Fiat currency. It may be usd or any other.
Usdt is like lending money to bitfinex. This is highly risk and you are not receiving any interest rate for the risk.

if you can want so you have many way exchange from USDT to BTC/ETH/etc.
Solution-
1. you go to Currency exchange section in this forum and https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=53.0 and many people helped you for exchange this.

Solution-
2. if you can want so you can use bttrex, binance, or any trusted and popular exchanger/trading plate-from and get USDT to BTC/ETH/etc.

There are two versions of USDT, one is USDT erc20, another is USDT-Omni.

However, if you look at the block browser: etherscan.io, you will find the exact holder addresses of USDT-ERC20 is not too many--only 2787 addresses.

https://etherscan.io/token/0xdac17f958d2ee523a2206206994597c13d831ec7

In contrast, USDT-Omni is more popular and more important for Tether, most of the USDT users are holding USDT-Omni.

Stable coins is very essential for investers to take part in the investment of cryptocurrencies. it's a bridge of the tradiditonal fiat world to the digital currency world. it has many merits, e.g. arbitrage and asset hedge etc. i would not state all the merits; if you are interested in that theroy research, you can find many on the internet.

In terms of USDT wallet. i'd like to recommend you the bitpie wallet( bitpie.com). It supports over 30 mainnet blockchains, including BTCBTC, ETH and EOS and so on. Of course, both USDT-Omni and ERC20 are suppported. I have been using it for over 3 years. It is my major wallet storing most of my assets.

Firstly You need to confirm which type of USDT you hold as there are two types USDT (Omni Layer) based on Bitcoin Blockcahin and USDT ( ERC20) based on Ethereum Blockchain and both of them have different ways of storage.

To identity the difference the simplest method is to check the wallet address were they are stored. If the address starts with "0x" it is sure to be a Ethereum based USDT else it is a Omni Based one.

For Omni Layer USDT storage you can use Omni Wallet (https://www.omniwallet.org/)

For Ethereum Based USDT storage you can use MEW (https://www.myetherwallet.com)

Please always verify which type of USDT are you dealing with which will help you in not loosing your funds.

Incase you want to store the Omni Layer based USDT, Trezor one Hardware wallet had a recent update that now supports Omni Layer. So you should be able to transfer your coins there without any Issue
More details about the support: Trezor One: Support for OMNI layer (https://blog.trezor.io/trezor-one-1-7-2-support-for-omni-layer-cbf699e4ffae?gi=825a5428a1e4)

if you want to be safe then convert it back to fiat. whether it is the Tether you are talking about or some weird ERC20 token it doesn't matter. neither are safe, the token is probably even less safe especially since it is stealing another coin's name!

you may think Tether is safe because of all the fake promises you have heard but nobody promised any safety ever and the company issuing it is shady enough to not deserve any trust.

A lot of crypto believe tether is a complete scam and they don't even have enough funds to back up their printed USDT.  If you are afraid of volatility just find a way to hold actual US dollars.  You don't want to be left holding worthless tokens if the whole thing collapses.

There are both USDT as ERC20 token and as Omni token. The first works on top of the Ethereum network and the second on top of the Bitcoin network.

You can store USDT ERC20 on your Eth address and access it through a third-party wallet euch as MyEtherWallet without compromising your security, or store the Omni tokens on your BTC address. The problem is that AFAIK, you won’t be able to access the Omni USDT token without revealing your private-keys through your backup seed, so it’s highly not recommended to do that.

I have just discovered that you can store  omine layer tether in coinomi wallet.

  that's a very good wallet.

I know bitpie is coming to the forum. However I find that Wallet very wired and hard to use. It has some relations to bither, which is confused  as well. I tried to exchange my bcx but I was not able... Maybe it's better now.

I usually keep USDT in binance exchange, where my USDT is always safe and besides if I want to invest immediately, it will be easy to complete when my money is available there

There are many other ERC20 stablecoins nowadays like GUSD, USDC, PAX, TUSD. You can keep them with any hardware wallet. BTW you can keep some USDT on different exchanges as well.

keeping coins on exchanges is the least safe thing that you can do with them so when your coins are on binance then you can't say they are safe. binance will be hacked sooner or later. it is only a matter of time like the other dozens of exchanges that either got hacked or scammed their users.
if you don't want to lose your money then cash out.

In my opinion, keeping your assets for a very long time on the accounts of the exchange is not the safest option, especially if your deposit is large enough, then the best option for you would be to keep a small amount on the exchange and keep the rest on the hardware wallet.

I think its better to exchange your USDT into bitcoin or ethereum before you keep it in your wallet. Do not ever keep your assets in a exchange because it is very dangerous. If I were you I will really exchange my USDT into bitcoin or ethereum because after many days the price will start to rise up.

Its good for the people who want to make money from what they have but OP looks like want to save USDT for long term investment by asking to store it a hardware wallet.I don't suggest people to be a long term investor on the stable coins it must be only used for trading purpose.

For all the time that I trade on various exchanges, I constantly adhere to the same rule - I never kept more than 30% of all my assets on any one exchange, this is too risky and can cause problems if something happens to an account, so I would not risk keeping all my assets in one place.

Usdt is more of a eth based token so definitely you can store that on other wallets as well as the offline and physical wallets.

UDST is issued both on Omni and ETH. However, it's more frequently used on Omni. you will see the comparison on through the block exploeror.

https://etherscan.io/token/0xdac17f958d2ee523a2206206994597c13d831ec7

There are only less than 3000 addresses of USDT-ERC20.

 Therefore, it's more BTC-Omni-based Token.

I would recommend Bitpie Wallet for 2 reasons:
1. Bitpie team also developed the Bither Wallet (bither.net), which is recommended by the official bitcoin site:https://bitcoin.org/en/choose-your-wallet. This explains well the background and credibility of this product;
2. As known to all, sendig USDT-omni needs BTC as miner fee, though small amount. However, bitpie wallet, has a very good feature-- sending USDT consumes USDT directly instead of comsuming BTC. This is very convenient for me.

What is the purpose of holding USDT? Just like USD, currency was made to spend because in the long run you will have less value, precisely because it's inflationary. Remember that USDT printing is endless so you will have something worth over 1 USD! You probably are not considering that one day the BTC will return to gain more value in relation to the USDT. Regarding your question, it's better to leave in USD than in USDT because sometimes USDT is below 1 USD.

Almost nobody uses ETH ERC20 version of USDT.

For USDT omni users, you can use Bitpie Wallet bitpie.com (http://bitpie.com) to send and receive USDT.
Bitpie's hardware wallet BITHD bithd.com (http://bithd.com) will support USDT omni in the next version (next week). So you can use BITHD to store large amount of USDT.

Also, we are considering to support USDT omni in our Bither Cold Wallet bither.net (http://bither.net)

My suggestion is you should convert it in bitcoin or altcoin and then moves your coin to another wallet. You can use Jaxx, Coinomi, or CoinPayment for android phone or you can move to Ledger which will ensure more safety because you can save it privately without anyone know. It is better to buy coins for investment than to save in USDT for a long time.

You should think very well, because if you put it in an ERC20 token it is not very secure, the exchange has a little more security, if you do not like Binance, you should look for another Exchange that also allows USDT, but it is advisable to keep it there.

If your USDT is erc20 token, you can store it to your ETH address. Otherwise, you can convert those with USDC and store on coinbase. This one is the best idea so far.

That is why I think that our funds should not be kept in stable coins for too long. This should be temporary and forced storage of our funds. While stable coins are very convenient to use, however, their security needs to be tested over time. The idea of stable coins is generally very good, but there are a lot of bad rumors around them.

of course, many coins can make their offline wallet, you can exchange them for USDT.
but if it is only to save it it is better to save fiat, why should you bother changing your fiat into crypto currency if only to be the same value, unless you intend to trade it and wait for the right time to buy.
if it's not better to save in fiat form, because USDT is the same as the USD the value is stable.

It depends on which USDT you have, there is the original USDT with Omni Layer Protocol or the new one is USDT with erc20, both do not have native hardware wallet support, so the best option is web wallet. If you have USDT with Omni you can use Omni Wallet, and if you have the ERC-20 USDT you can use MyEtherWallet (I have heard that you can connect MyEtherWallet to ledger). If you don't know which one is your USDT, you can check it by looking at the USDT address of your exchange, if it has "0x" initial, then it is ERC-20, if it has either "1", "3" or "bc1" then it is Omni Layer.
