Bitcoin has officially entered the longest stretch of declining prices in its 10-year history.

The world’s oldest and most valuable cryptocurrency achieved an all-time high of $19,764 on Dec. 17, 2017 on the CoinDesk Bitcoin Price Index and has printed a series of lower price highs ever since, making February 2 (as per UTC time), the 411th consecutive day prices have been in decline.

As such, bitcoin’s latest stretch surpasses the duration of the infamous 2013-2015 bitcoin bear market, which spanned 410 days from its price high to low.

yep, it's a sad truth but we have to accept it. crypto suffered too much damage, bubbles exploded, affected by trade wars between major countries, the financial market declined, ...
There are too many disadvantages for us. But this is also an opportunity for us to buy bitcoin at a cheap price. The market will recover in the future and we need to work more.

And this period has been a difficult one for bitcoin investors and those who bought large amounts especially when we had high prices.
But for the hodlers,its no loss until the coins are sold,many have lost believe and faith in the system,but I believe patience would prove invaluable at the end

We are not in a bearish trend, we are in the accumulation phase, the bearish trend has already passed ... If the market is analyzed, they will realize, if they start to see triangles or figures, they do not make any sense.

All these articles (google "bitcoin longest bear market") seem to be copies from a text published in January (I found it at Bitcoin.com (https://news.bitcoin.com/current-crypto-bear-market-set-to-become-the-longest-ever/), but I doubt it's the original source) where they correctly state that it "may" be the longest bear market. Now some of these blogs (including Coindesk, which is a shame as they claim to be a "leading" Bitcoin media outlet) "actualized" it and it became "officially" the longest bear market ... but no lower low was recorded ....

We still don't know. Possibly we're going a step lower. But personally I think the probability of a ~$3100 low is higher.

For my own opinion, we still experience bear market because there is no changes in the price, even the price of bitcoin is still around $3400-$3500. I really want to see uptrend market not a down trend market but do you know what month in this year we see the uprising price of cryptocurrencies?

this time the condition of bitcoin scored history for 10 years of its development. but this is the cycle of travel that must be faced by BTC. because not every development without obstacles. if BTC is able to get out of this zone, it will certainly have a more rapid development

If that's the reality then we cannot do anything to change it.
What we can do now is accept it, honestly, I'm not interested in reading stuffs like that, it's so negative, I already
pledge to myself to focus on the positive news alone, I might be bias but it's my way to minimize the fear inside, I'm feeding myself with good info now.

It will not bring good vibes in the market anyway, price is stable now but it's still bad in its current standing.

Bitcoin and the wider cryptocurrency market has been suffering through a year-long bear market that was branded "crypto winter" late last year for its debilitating effect on the industry.

The bitcoin price has been falling steadily since it hit an all-time high of almost $20,000 in December 2017, dropping by some 80% over the last 13 months and dragging the wider market down with it.

Now, the chief executive of one blockchain company, Civic, is warning that that crypto winter could go "nuclear" if the bitcoin price falls much further.

"If we break below $3,000 for bitcoin, crypto winter will become crypto nuclear winter," Vinny Lingham, the CEO of digital identity software company Civic, said via Twitter.


"Bitcoin bear markets don’t end when the market indicates that there is a bottom. They typically end when the market indicates that there is no bottom," Lingham tweeted previously.

"The reality is that crypto needs real adoption and use cases," Lingham said in a recent interview. "Until we have that we’re not going to have another bubble. The speculative mania is over. People want real numbers and usage and transaction volumes."

This is old news.We are waiting for the longest bull market that will occur after 2020 for sure,so I couldn't care less about the bear market now. ;D
The bear market will continue in the next 2 years,because it's impossible for btc to reach it's ATH again soon.

If we keep reading negative articles or opinions about the market, there is a chance that we can lose our focus and our perspective will change. I am just following the flow of the cryptocurrency market and I am sure that the market will become good in this year.

Hey it’s real we’re indeed in a bear phase which has refused to end, but then again it should also be seen as a slow and steady accumulation phase. I like the fact that you’re ignoring short term fluctuations and negativity, and only focusing on the long term picture which will bring good returns. As far the prices are concerned currently there’re no positive news, which can lift it up we will have to be patient with the prices.

You were right mate,these might be the longest bearish market people and cryptos have experienced but we will not lose hope because theres always a sunshine after every rain.Lets just take more advantage on this bear trend and hopefully in the near future we can maximize our profit and prove that cryptocurrency deserves that once it exist and people trust in it.

Hopefully, but most people said the exact same thing in September or October last year. Then the market crashed 50%.

It's only possible to know if it's an accumulation or distribution phase long afterwards, in hindsight. The market has seen nothing but lower highs since December of 2017. Until that changes, I'm not even going to call it an "accumulation phase" yet.

A great time to accumulate more bitcoin, hopefully not to fall hard again since the price stable on that for months now. If you really analyze the market, you can see more good trends in long term and if you can be more patient you will invest more, profit can be higher as much.

Bitcoin now is on the phase of sideways which the price does not increase or decrease too much. And every time the bitcoin price is up higher, in the next hours or day, the price will be down again. The situations continue like that, and I am afraid we are in this mode for a few months again. After this phase, bitcoin price can increase higher because the chance to go back to the higher price is wide open.

Yet, I think we can call it an "accumulation phase". Many people are buying Bitcoin during these times, but the thing is that at the same time many BTC are being sold by those who have thousands and thousands of it. Why do I think many people are buying? If the daily trading volume is around $5 billion, as it is today for instance, and the change is only -0.22%   that means that the amount of BTC bought by some people is equal to that sold by others. How can anyone say for sure that the bear market has already ended? People were calling bottom when the price dropped to $6,000 and were promising a bull run at the end of 2018. I don't see any signs that we have already passed the bottom, the nearest future is as always very uncertain.

Also, what actually counts as a bear market? Does a bear market ends when the bottom is reached, or is the phase of stagnation after the bottom or trading sideways also count as a bear market, and it only truly ends when a new bull run starts?

Yeah, I don't think that we are really in the longest bear market. Moreover, the previous time bitcoin seems to have lost a bit more of its value than this time.
Anyway, the length does not matter that much. The FUD is only keeping the prices low for no particular reason, so we should try to stay positive and share articles about things that matter like new regulations, adoption of blockchain and cryptocurrencies, financial support from various companies and stuff like that. I still believe bitcoin can make it out alive, so to speak.

That depends on the point of view and long period of time you take into consideration. Sometimes is hard to set the boundaries where bear market stops and bull market begins. Everyone is already losing patience for price to move up and market to enter into bull phase but don't forget that Bitcoin has already been in worse situation and has lost greater deal of value than it's now the situation. In short it could always be worse. But as always Bitcoin will recover, it's just the matter of time and how much of the value will be able to recover.

Well sure, every trade has both a buyer and a seller. Many people were buying BTC in the $6,000s last year too. The reason the 2018 sideways was a distribution phase is that price broke down afterwards. Supply overwhelmed demand. The same could happen here. I don't want to assume it's an accumulation phase until I see technical signs of a long term bottom.

This is such a very bad news to all of the crypto people, may this bearish market be once again over, whats keeping this bear market for so long? Whales must stop manipulating the crypto market up to these dates or else cryptocurrency will die and everything in us will vanish, maybe some organizations is trying to demolish crypto from the real world.

IMO these are the events that will help us analyze the price in the future. Cryptocurrency is a new business entity and behaves differently on its path of self-development. Therefore it is still not in its own way, it can easily lean on any side. Price volatility, big risk, big earnings are due to this. We are gonna say "goodbye" them when the time will come that I said.

I don't think I would believe in this article. As what I have heard, the bear market has already finished and what we have experienced rright now is the correction of prices. Maybe in the next few months, we will see some bullish movements in Bitcoin.

I think even this is longest time that bitcoin is in low price, I think there's a  chance that bitcoin move up just be patience it will come soon. As we can that bitcoin is 3400 price we are still lucky because bitcoin not drop more.

It is true that btc has not stayed so long in bear market but also it is more stable than falling now in past couple of months which is a good sign as chances of rising are way better than the future fall . This will help all those who had being staying invested in this market will get the maximum returns.

Maybe its because investor panic at early 2018. Its need time to build trust again from investor but if bitcoin ETF approved, maybe investor confident will increase again. Many news about hacking and regulation makes investor wait and see on market condition

Since I started in this community industry, this is the first time I experienced were bear market has been running for 1 year almost.
Perhaps this will take more months or it could be til December 2019 before Bull happen in my assessment only.
But still the market is unpredictable. And one thing for sure I know the rising of bull will be happen again.

What do you mean in decline exactly?

Bitcoin price is higher than the initial price it got issued. If you mean decline from the All-time high then ok your point is valid. But that price wasn't the real one that could describe the market in that period of time. It was a bubble that blew early with minor effects in the market.

In my opinion, we should not talk about decline. Bitcoin is 10 years old and you talk about a period of time of 1 year in order to define the "decline".

Its from the last all time high,so we are in huge loss by comparing that prices but still it becomes the cycle of crypto currencies.Maybe we are seeing bear market for most long time in the history but I believe more price fell means strong bump will happen.So if you are a bitcoin believe then it is the time for you to have few more bitcoins into your wallet.

So what if the bitcoin is now in its longest bear market? It had potential so it will recover in a matter of time. We should just have patience for us to continue to hold our bitcoins. There are now traders who losses their patience that leads to them to sell their bitcoins in wrong time. 

If you consider what happened in 2017 to be a bull run, and that's your only example of a bull run that you have gone through, you might be up for a surprise. Surprise in the way that we see the market go up gradually instead of massive legs up where people blindly buy themselves into the market.

I already see it happening; the price has gone over the $10,000 level, and people still speculate about when the bull run will finally start.  :D

Back in 2014/2015 people weren't even remotely as speculative and dreamy about bull runs as the people we're dealing with right now. 2017's adoption wave is the worst so far, and I'm pretty certain that it will only get worse the deeper we dig into mainstream adoption.

That is probably because bitcoin also reached the highest it has ever been by a 20 fold and then dropped from there. I understand this bear talk is easy and people are upset about the prices are not going up so thats understandable however the price is 3.5 thousand dollars right now.

I know it looks low and it is definitely low compared for the previous 1.5 years and if you got in anywhere in the previous 1.5 years or so you are not happy with the loss you got however the price is best it has ever been except the summer of 2017 and winter of 2017 period of that 10 years of existence. Hence, the bear market is definitely sad and I hope we will start going up soon but there is also no need to be negative about it and make drastic changes in your life because of it. Just be patient and try to accept bitcoin as what it is.

After its highest peak in a short time, we experienced a thing more than a correction and it takes so much time. It is very difficult to maintain prices at this level after this rise.

Most likely, this period will have to be experienced for a long time, since people's trust has been weakly eroded by cryptocurrencies. Although the collapse of course was predictable.

cryptocurrency now lack of investors,so there is only few money come and go from cryptocurrency market.and now market capitalization only around 133billions, it totally different with end of 2017 , where market capitalization could reach 800billions.and if we want to see this moment again we should spread positive news about bitcoin and altcoin so more people will interested.

The price corrections are still happening and it is the reason why the market is still not rising up. The bear market is now ended so there is a high possibility that the market will become bull any moment.

The duration of bitcoin bear market is beyond expectation of most speculators, the market want to create a new history. I feel  opportune to be a witness of this historic event.

I wish I could accumulate more but due short of funds I'm really tight on my budget now, wish I had more back-up funds and sold a lot during the bullrun  which I regretted. But that's how investing in crypto market works you will win big and also lose big, If there's only an indicator to avoid this but none.

Honestly, the problem is that there were too many new people during the peak times which ran away when the price went down. We can't really fix that until we have ourselves new people again and this time we need to make sure they don't leave.
What we can do is to get more places accept bitcoin, more people adopt bitcoin, more shops taking bitcoin and so forth which will make bitcoin go more steady instead of built on hype.

Now, that big corporations get into bitcoin and also heavily invest into blockchain as well, we can see the small and steady increase in userbase for bitcoin which will make it go back up again but this time with proper reasons and now just "YOU CAN GET RICH IN A DAY" type of hype. If those people who got into bitcoin during late 2017 didn't ran away screaming on early 2018 we wouldn't be in this situation.

If only, but it's always surprise investors,  the market movements can't be predict accurately, sway and fluctuations brings our investment at risk,
with this long bearish trend, investment wise it should be take as an investment opportunities, buying coins while the value still low, if you are
looking for long term you can keep on waiting while holding your invested assets.

For the recovery of bitcoin and other alts, actually no one who can confirm about this, even 1 month after ATH from crypto, we can see some predictions that the market will recover "soon" and till now its not proven. This is just a little illustration that crypto can also be so miserable. If we only hope for hype, i think it will be difficult to achieve again

We can choose to see this as a good accumulation phase, the cheap bitcoin we all wanted more of in late december 2017 and most of 2018 are now possible to get.
One day this down trend will be over, so get those bitcoins before the prices goes North again

Well i believe that the bitcoin will have a great future, this long down trend is a part of a big whales plan and if we are going to lost a control on our self we can possibly loss a huge amount of profit because we can surely do panic selling if we are going to look at the bitcoin price without a proper understanding. Bitcoin price is always unstable value there are also a great posibility of rising or maybe falling. But in my part as long as bitcoin has a value i believe that soon it will rise.

That is something that we can't do anything about and it is something that we should just deal with. But yes, I agree that this is a good time to buy more bitcoin because the price is down more than 80% as you said. We need to be careful to decide to buy bitcoin again because we don't know if the price can stable at a price now or will get down for more.

to be honest, the first time I knew about crypto was when the market was like this, when the market was not good. I haven't felt the sweetness in the crypto world. or am I too stupid? I do not know.

Yes it might be true and i do believe market will recover but it will takes time. Bitcoin has a fundamental technology that will make it valueable. We need to wait for more people to realize that bitcoin and blockchain is the future of our economy.

What statistical basis do this analysis comes from because to me how can a commodity such as bitcoin that dose not have a fix price be rated mathematically to be on a decline, yes the price of bitcoin have been on a decline since after the all time rise in 2017 but that can not stop us from taking into account the various recovery that has take place since January 2018 till date.

I think we are not really looking at it in a right way to call this a bear market. I mean when will it be not bear market ?
The prices needs to go up in order for us to say its on a bull market right? Like if bitcoin goes to 12 thousand dollars in a month will we call it a bull market ? Yeah we will. What makes a bear market a bear market tough? The price going down right ? What happens if that 12 thousand dollars went as low as 3.5 again? We will call that bear market right ? Yeah we will.

However, we are in a market where price hasn't moved too much for the past 3-4 months now (since 15th of November) and before that price didn't move for 4-5 months too, how can we really call this a bear market when prices do not drop? What makes something a bear market when its the same price every single day?

Now people are started to talk about next mining reward halving which will takes place next year so if is the thing which is going to bring bull run then it is so long wait for the holders but still patience needed for the crypto investors to make more profits.

it's true because it's been more than a year bitcoin in the market like this, and my hope this year until the coming year, of course, in 2020 the bitcoin can experience a big price change

it has been waiting too long for the market to recover and it seems that there have been a lot of traders who are panicking so they prefer to secure their assets because they are too long to wait, the main problem is nobody will know when the cryptocurrency prices can recover.

Agreed, this is the reality things happen. The longest time ever running of Bear market for the past 1 decade. Before every year bear was happening only for a months but this time it takes more than 12 months already. And we don't know exactly why? there are lot of answers by many here but all of it are just an opinion and speculations only.

The longest bearish trend will soon be turned to the logest bullish market.  I am happy that bitcoin and cryptocurrencies market has started to pump this afternoon and hope it continues in that way.

That's right because from the beginning of the year until now Bitcoin still has no good changes, even bitcoin is getting down until now which makes bitcoin on the longest bear market

Even on such a long bear market the price of bitcoin have got fluctuations. This is the one that keeps the market stable and gives a constant circulation in the market. After a long a strong bull trend has been experienced yesterday which is now with minor fluctuations. Expect the recovery to continue in the similar manner.

Longest bull run? How I wish it will happen. I am really hoping that bear market will end this year. I miss those feeling of excitement. Bitcoin is only our way to be able to build our new home.

Exactly, but i don't think so because this is not the longest one because from 2012 Bitcoin faced many fluctuations in the market. Once the SEC starts giving ETF approval then many people start believing the Bitcoin and Blockchain importance, how it is beneficial to the real-time environment.

I think this process will be much longer and the longest bear in history will not end soon. There has been so much development in this long process, why the bear market is continuing, why I do not think we could not enter into a period of bull. Of course, in the past bull period, because of the very serious rise in the market in these periods can not be revived, but despite the development of this price has not become an annoying event. The sad part is when bitcoin goes up like it did today there is never a talk about "bull run" because to be honest we know just because price went up to 3600 or something we are not going to see it go to $10k right away neither. However when it drops to 3400 or something people react like it will go down to 2000 right away.

Why is it easier to make people believe bitcoin will go down a lot and its very hard to show them the obvious reason why bitcoin will go up in the long term no matter what happens ?

Why is it easy for people to believe a bad thing will happen but they have hard time believing a good thing may happen? Are we so desperate now, are we that much of a financial ruin that we do not hope for good things anymore? Did we already gave up our hope to have a decent economy in the world and see everything as a bad potential instead.

You call it a bear market, and smart people will call it a good time to invest before the price rises. You need to think ahead and then you will understand what is happening in the market.

Its only in its longest bear market if we haven't hit bottom. We may have hit bottom, may have not.

I think this is not the only Bitcoin price on the bear market, because previous history even the price of Bitcoin has continued to be under for almost 4 years, and that happened after a very high price increase, so this takes a long time of patience.

That's the nature of bear markets. Everyone is negative and pessimistic. After more than a year of declining prices and an 84% drop overall (much worse in alts), a little short squeeze can't do much to dissuade the negativity.

This is actually a good thing to see. Early on in the bear market, people were much more hopeful and confident. Where did the price go? Down!

Bull markets are built on this sort of negativity.......we want people to be this way because it means we're close to the bottom. That's how it was in 2015 too. The ultimate low may not be in yet, but we're obviously getting closer.

The price aint really the issue now.
It had been silent for quite some time and yet merchants still wont come in.
That is what we needed more than just specualting the price.
Usage of bitcoin thru maybe online shops or an industry which focus on sending payments using bitcoin like electric bills and other kind of bills.

Almost 1 year and almost 1 month when the value of the bitcoin decrease the value but we still waiting to end this Bearmarket because I think it will be rise as soon as possible. I hope after the end of the Bearmarket and if the market rise better to see this thread the longest Bullrun market in the history takes few years so we can earn more huge money. I believe this market will still recover after its long bear trend so regardless of its current price,we should stay optimistic all the time.Once a good price increase is already taking place,i'm sure all investors who have leave bitcoin behind will come again and start trusting and investing in bitcoin again.

I'm very curious to see if we're going to touch 2 years of bear market, but IMHO I think we're gonna launch the the "rocket" somewhen this summer, maybe later September-October. We need to find the bottom first though.

As they say this is only a beginning of the beginning and mass adoption is coming on our way so better not to stress out with the price and just accumulate and hold.

Though recently we have some small spikes and people starting to post again if its the start of bull run, well it's not. The fact that with this small spikes many are selling more than who buy as so it will dump more versus from its previous price.  If everyone is just accumulating rather than selling then we can see more green candlestick.

I quite agree, it's sad but we have to face the truth that bear market presence is still upon us and i highly doubt that bull market will not come soon as this year based on market situations right now. However, i am still optimistic that bitcoin will surpass all these adversity in the future as we hoping for the next bull runs.

Yeah i think that's how we should view things right now. If you're not an experienced day trader, better avoid bitcoin. Practice will smaller coins. The top coins it seems are more suitable at this point for long term plans.

Yes right, in 2018 and currently Bitcoin still hasn't shown a significant increase, prices tend to decrease little by little, but I think we all should never give up to get success with Bitcoin in the future.

Bitcoin's history has never been stable, almost every year is absolutely different and new experience in bitcoin, so we can't discuss from it's history. But I don't know what to call current bear, maybe current fear? Because it really lasts so long, hope is rise but that process in real life lasts so loooong. There are two sides, it continue falls and panic will finally destroy it (I highly, highly doubt that will happen) or price will rise slowly and then very quickly at some point.

This is the best part of this market situation as its takes time for us to accumulate many coins while the price is at cheap. Moving forward the market will recover at the right time and nothing we can do with it unless we have a huge amount of money that can use to reverse the market flow. The market will only go on bull if we have a good reason that people will buy more coins for daily consumption which this will lead to mass adoption. We just need to be patience to wait for that recovery.

I think it's alright if this is the longest time of low price of bitcoin because I think the price is going to be natural price then after it will going up again. As long we can use the bitcoin and still there a value I think it not a problem. Unless you want a instant that you want a instant money back. yeah  :( it is so pity that new investors that bought last year lost very big money. they are very unlucky. but it is good for the ones that will join nowadays. the prices are mostly at deepest points.

Worrying too much wouldn't solve anything. The fact is, if you bought high and "lost money" there's nothing you can do to recoup that unless you stay and wait this out. Brace yourselves, it can get even lower. I just try to tell my self that whales are in hoarding phase and we'd get better news in 2020.

I don't know that we've been in a bear market for the last few months, as bitcoin's price has been just flat.  It's been more of a stretch of price stability.  Bear markets are defined as something like a drop of 10% over the course of a year, but it seems like that already happened quite a while ago--the drop from $20k to where bitcoin is today happened relatively quickly, and it's been stalled for what seems like forever.

If bitcoin stayed in the $3500-4000 range for all of 2019, I don't think that would qualify as a bear market.  Nevertheless I'm hoping that btc doesn't remain in that rangr all year, that it can at least hit $5000 by year's end.  A stable price might be great if you're using btc as a currency, but I rarely do.  And new investors generally won't be attracted to an asset that isn't doing anything.

If why tried to recall Bitcoin's history since existence, there is a lot of dumps happen but it surprise everyone when it suddenly flown high more that of what the people thinks. Well me personally, I didn't lose anything. I remember seeing someone mention in a thread that he lost 90% though and I doubt that guy bought during the ath. That's still a HUGE sunk cost. Might as well keep those bitcoins and try not to think about it much.

I don’t think you’re right, it is not up to two years that the price has been on low price. But whatever, I think that the next bull market is going to be a huge, and it’s not just going to be a bull run, but a monster. There have been a lot of experts talking about it and I’m looking forward to the end of this year or in 2020.

Some of these people are those who bought out of FOMO. Some of them never really expected the pride of Bitcoin to go as high as it did the last time and when it did , they all started rushing in cause they don’t want to miss out on the profit they will make from it, but unfortunately for them, while they believed that the price will continue upwards , it failed them.

We cannot deny that the current crypto market condition is a long decline in all crypto, especially bitcoin. With the current market conditions, we must be smarter in managing the coins that we have in order to be able to benefit.

This because many are earning when ATH was happening. This is why it could possibly could never recover and cryptocurrency will going to end. well, thinking of a bear market only makes us panic, and doesn't focus. managing finances we have today is a very important factor before a bull market occurs. Isn't it good enough to collect assets when it's the longest bear market. besides, I'm sure when a bull market occurs, only a few people save their assets to be used at such times.

I think this month the bear market end, and the grow will continue over next months i think, even if we see some drop we will have again a price grow, so better hold coins and get more for a higher profit.

The bitcoin market have suffered it greatest decline in history and at that it recovery in the year 2019/is a remarkable one in 2018 and early 2019 it price have suffered it greatest decline and at that the percent price is a recovery face and the bull is about to start running.

I though that the 2013-15 correction lasted for more than 2 years... or perhaps I was wrong. Back then, it started with the Mt Gox robbery. The prices suddenly plummeted to less than $200 per coin, before recovering to around $600 within two months. Anyway... if this is true, then I would say that it is very encouraging news for us. It means that we can expect a spike very soon.

It might be the longest in recent times but yeah, we can look back at it and say we survived lol. Or most of us did 😁 hopefully there's a corresponding bull reaction to that long bear market since a lot of us were bled dry by that especially those who puchased end of 2017.

It's the most difficult time especially for those who expected that bitcoin would continue to soar after the bear market. It has been a challenge because we have faced so much difficulty but I still believe that things will get rewarded in time. Everything will get better soon.

I think the bear market ended exactly end of last month and the market has already deepened its beautiful  hand into the bull market which started at the beginning of this month, henceforth, every price BTC achieve now will always be a stepping stone to the next price value and I expect more of these sharp increase to occur consecutively within the next 3 months.

Most of the price fluctuation we are seeing now are just from activities from people like us who are temporarily using our spare cash to quickly benefit from the fluctuation while our main investment is still on HODL till we reach BTC ATH.
