Italy to Launch Blockchain-Based e-Voting System so Citizens Abroad can Vote

Democratic life can be influenced by innovations such as Blockchain technology, Cryptocurrency, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and others, though there are still many unanswered questions and hunches related to these infant technologies. Now the Italian government wants to apply blockchain to electoral processes in order to enable citizens living across the globe to participate in voting, Fortuneita reports.

Voting is one of the best "niches" where blockchain technology can be applied.
It's weird that Italy is the first country that has an idea to implement blockchain into voting.
It isn't the most tech advanced country and it isn't the most crypto friendly(not that this idea has anything to do with crypto). ;D

If I remember correctly, there is also an ICO project that aims to build this system. Not sure about the name but the purpose is the same, make electoral process can be done quickly and seamlessly from anywhere.

This is a good thing coming from the Italian government, I just hope they won't need any new token for this.

Yes, it would be weird if they were the first, but actually they are not pioneers in this regard.

For the first time blockchain-based voting was tried in Zug, Switzerland in June 2018. “The premiere was a success,” the officials said.

A month later, blockchain technology was successfully used for voting for midterm elections in some counties of West Virginia, USA.

Also, in 2017 Nasdaq successfully completed blockchain technology to run proxy voting in Estonia, although it was in the context of shareholder votes.

This would benefit areas where corruption is rife, a public ledger with votes can be counted by anyone and disputed accordingly. There are ico's for voting apps but none worth remembering

The blockchain technology is designed to securely store and use large databases of any data online. Therefore, the use of this technology for voting in the elections of citizens abroad is just the direct application of this technology.
I think that in the future and the usual voting in elections to the authorities and administration in most industrialized countries will occur with the use of this technology, which is reliably protected from external interference by unauthorized persons.

Already Estonia has got the e-voting, and the same is developed on the blockchain technology. Estonia being a small country it was made easier for development. Now Italy getting into voting through blockchain really a good thing. Also these were a must in a country, because voting is one's right and the same when provided with anywhere access possibilities it'll make a change on the governance and can expect more countries to follow in the near future.

And it is likely the only one (apart from cryptocurrencies)

Nevertheless, these two niches are at the top of things which make our societies tick along (i.e. money and elections). It would be interesting to see how things are going to develop further. I assume countries with strong democratic tradition such as Norway, Switzerland, Sweden, maybe a few other countries won't have any issues in integrating the blockchain into their electoral systems, and after a while other countries may follow their lead. And then we will see which governments are truly democratic and which are only using elections as a disguise for their authoritarian rule
