I found this website a while ago, I think it has values for average of every card. A lot of scripts (except sha256..) so you can compare hashing power depending on which coin you plan to mine.

From looks of it 3 RX470 are worth about 1.75x of a 1080ti on most scripts.

Here is an older post from BT with some advice that you should find suitable.

A big article with the Best GPUs for mining

And two sources with direct comparisons between the two cards

There are many calculators online that you can use to know which GPU is most profitable nowadays.

Based on my experienced If I compared them both AMD GPUs vs Nvidia GPUs these days Nvidia is mostly more profitable to buy due to more mining software release and more Algo for Nvidia cards.

Look at the grin coin or beam coin if you want to mine this coin you can't mine them with 4gb GPU ram they mostly use gtx 1070 and gtx 1080ti.

So I suggest you choose GTX 1080ti so that you can mine with other coins compared to rx470.
However, some calculator will show you that x3 rx470 is way more profitable than gtx 1080ti but the problem you can't mine on other algo and mine new coins.

You can also try this one https://www.nicehash.com/profitability-calculator for calculation but I don't recommend this software to mine and auto exchange all of your coins into bitcoin.
Holding coins is better than selling them while the coins still not profitable.

Since you are newbie, it may worth mentioning that with GPU you should mine altcoins, not Bitcoin. There are indeed pools that will convert automatically and pay you in Bitcoin, but that doesn't change the fact you'll mine altcoins. (With GPU will get nothing if you try to mine Bitcoin directly).
This being said make sure you don't try to mine at Bitcoin pools. And also maybe you could get good answers if you move this thread under Mining (Altcoins) (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=160.0).
