Title: What happens to your tokens when you're gone one day?
Post by: DisWhale on February 11, 2019, 09:56:56 AM
Just recently, a news showed how one crypto whale died with his cryptocurrencies worth millions of dollar. No member of the family had access to his private keys and other login details. Are you ready to face the same fate and leave your children or family without having access to your hard earned cryptocurrencies some day to come? Showing your wallet login details to them now can also be risky so what are some of the preparations you are making towards the retrieval of your money when you are gone for life one day?

This is a point i really never look into before, but we do have platform like infinitus where your wallet will be pass down if inactive but the problem with this is that what if your kin are not crypto adopters and does not know how it works how can they receive your assets.

That means if all of your asset will be centralized on the hot wallet and can i consider that as a fase place dude? Remember when you are seeing the fact that just try to safe your amount in the wallet that you have printed out the private key and it much better.

Care to link the source ? or the whale you mention is the owner of QuadrigaCX. Right now I don't have any altcoins in my wallet except for Bitcoin if I have a lot of $$ invested I would leave a long instruction to my loved ones. To avoid the risk of one family member claiming everything you have to create a multi sig address.

In my family there are no problems with this, and everyone knows where they are and how to use cryptocurrency, so I don’t worry about it!

This is something I think about from time to time : a solution could be to register a video containing the basics of crytpo knowledge ( and btw it would be a long one) containing also several links to internet places where they could learn more about thie matter.
And in a separate way providing the private keys/passwords/ligin details and everything is needed to access the crypto but still not sure what form this second package should have.

But due to laziness I still haven't done anything in this direction  :-\

This is the most important part in this question. The biggest problem is not leaving a paper with some keys in a will, but if the people who will receive that will and those keys will know what they have to do with them and if they will know how to avoid being hacked, phishing, or what they will need to do if they have to swap a token.

If you don't leave your private keys to a trusted person before you die, then your assets will be gone with you. And they will remain frozen forever, like many bitcoin in wallets with forgotten  passwords.

There were some project 1-2 years ago working on heritage of crypto assets, but the main obstacle was serious trust point issues like when, how and so on to give your private keys.

This is a problem that has been debated by Cryptocurrency Enthusiasts worldwide, the fact is that most of us cannot even trust a living relative with that kind of secret because they might steal from us while we are still alive.

There is a project that is focusing on stuffs just like this, one of them is VELIC, they are trying to build a vault where even if you lose your keys, your funds can still be recovered... And another is Safe Haven, it is about securing your crypto assets for the next generation using smart contract.

One of the best ways to securely pass on your hard earned money after your death one day is to split your private keys into three or more and share it to different people who have no communication link and have limited or no knowledge in cryptocurrency. After this, make a will which will call all parties in hold of the private keys to come together. From there, any cryptocurrency expert can withdraw the funds for the family or successor.

I have never thought about this, and my property is not too much and if I have any problems. Maybe all my altcoin will come with me and no one will be able to access it. I also did not intend to share the private key for anyone in the family or friends because it could be exposed to the outside

Yes, I think he is talking about QuadrigaCX. It's sad but I found it doubtful because it's not possible to hold only by one person since it is an exchange. But who knows. Multisig can be and/or can not be a solution in some cases.

Honestly, I don't have crypto assets as people have. But, if someday I have a lot of crypto asset I will consider to put all of my assets on an offline wallet and I will save it the private key on flashdisk and keep it on my secret place in my room then I will tell my family where I hide it.

My family already know how crypto works so I don't need to worry with them if they want to convert it to flat money...

Maybe everyone will have a different opinion. And for me, I certainly haven't thought about this because I'm sure it can still last a long time. A person's life and death must have been arranged and we would just run it. And for now, work optimally and generate profits from Crypto.

One of my relatives and one of my friends already understand everything and know how to use it. If necessary, when accessing my device, they can do whatever they need. I think this is the surest way to preserve your assets just in any case, of course, if you have trust.

It is difficult to talk about life, but death is sometimes sudden.

You’ve got a good point. Maybe as time comes where crypto will be globally accepted then there will be KYC implementation of all the assets inorder to be identified who is the owner and the project founder will just maybe convert and send the funds to the relatives knowing the surname of the token owner.

When anyone is gone, those who were close to him whom he or she trusted enough to know their passwords and wallet keys will take over their tokens but in a situation where no one knows your crypto life details, then you leave your tokens to be gone with you as well.

Because we do not know the bad fate when it comes, of course there must be a will left for the closest family. It is very risky to immediately give a private key or password without giving any explanation and knowledge about crypto and the markets to them. I trust of my lovely families so I don't want to be selfish and not matter give them private keys or passwords but before that I have to first explain everything related to crypto to them.

And the problem is to leave all the passwords from the wallets somewhere on the record and store it in a safe as a post-mortem note. The main thing to want.

I think the answer is simple and straight forward.
I even wanted to share the case of that exchanger owner that died and nobody was able to access the exchanger after the death and I know that's the end of all the money and accessibility to the exchanger, the news was actually carried by BBC on there Business News. So I think literally, from now on one should atleast let one of his/her children know the login details to his/her accounts.

I did keep a copy of my private keys and seed words for my family. I kept the copy in a safe place but the only worry is that my family cannot find the paper or don’t understand what is in it. I did teach my family to use my crypto desktop wallet and hardware wallet, but I don’t think they are learning seriously.

I think you should teach your heir about crypto and then put your private key as usual where you the only one who can access it then as most common people if someone of their relative died, the heir can access the belonging of dead people.

I have been thinking about this for a long time, so I only entrust one person who will take care of it, so this is the importance of trust. I have to give one person to inherit my property to the family, you can trust your child or your wife but if not anyone you can trust, you can look for it out there, you can save it somewhere where it is not connected to the internet and when you go it can be inherited with complete information where your assets are stored

it's like a necessity it seems. our environment, friends and family I think already know and we ourselves need not be afraid, because they especially families also have the same access.

Death is inevitable for all of us. Therefore, if we are interested in crypto coins, we must teach the process to our family. Otherwise, all our labor will be wasted. We can prepare a simple and descriptive little crypto guide, so that our family can enjoy our crypto accumulation when we die.

That must be really pathetic situation for a family due to ignorance of one crypto adopter. He must have prepared to face everything because nothing is certain in this world and everything might change upside down in a fraction of second itself hence everyone here must need to be prepared to inherit our wealth to our next-generation so that we will find some meaning for our time and hard work. We should not waste our crypto savings hence need to take steps accordingly.

How it will be risky to show with our family members. I really could not understand what kind of situation you are referring. It may be different family system in your country than mine. I guess if we are not able to trust our family members then who else we may able to ?

Correct, we can't tell when death will come our way, if we do engage to this business and we are really working and investing the needs of letting
our family to learned even a little knowledge about this industry is needed, so we can give proper instructions on how they will be able to claimed and enjoy those investment that we prepared for them and it will not turned into a waste after we die.

Though in anyhow, crypto industry is no longer a secret, but the process on how to work with wallets and exchange is needed to be learned.

We will never know when death will occur in our life, and as a cryptocurrency investor that is the only one that has an access to our wallet we should have make plans for our love ones be able to recover it and use it for their future. In my case, I trust my family with my private key and also thought them how to use it to recover my cryptocurrencies in case bad things happened to me. But if you don't want trust anyone and can afford to have a safe deposit box or own safe vault, then you can make a copy of your private key and list the steps on how to recover your coins, in case no one in your family knows how to use it, then put it on your safe deposit box.

This is tragic and we all know that this might happen anytime to anybody even we like it or not. Keeping and telling our private keys has it's risks and that is what we are going to find ways to solve as it is complicated. In my case I am the only one in my family who knows crypto that is why I need time to teach them how it works. Keeping could be a more serious thing as it will leave our love ones clueless about our crypto holdings.

If you do not want to disclose your secret keys, then simply transfer the cryptocurrency to cash. That's when your family will be provided. And since many do not even know what a cryptocurrency is, this is the best way.

If your loved ones are far from understanding cryptocurrencies and how to use them, then I would write a detailed instruction. But perhaps the best solution is to teach your loved ones to use a cryptocurrency wallet, then your assets will not be useless in case of your death.

It will be great since it will help or contribute to increase the market price of such a cryptocurrency in the market. More volumes secured, more price ahead. So I think it is a positive news.

I also heard about this news, they've said that this person has a lot of crypto that is left behind, and I think it will be a puzzle for hackers to enter his account and get the money there, but one thing is sure for me, this will make the price of such crypto high.

Everyone who is 'dead' serious about crypto knows that creating multiple hard copies of all keys and passwords and keeping it all in separate, but safe locations is just as important as knowing how to download wallets, manipulate wallet files, myetherwallet, exchanges, etc.

Not only that, but in my mind, if a man went to the trouble to make a crypto portfolio worth millions, without simultaneously educating a couple of his more beloved and trusted family members and leaving hard copies (I mean, we are talking about generation wealth here, right?) or electronic ones somewhere, gets what he deserves.  It's called Karma.  Those children of his will have to try to obtain independent wealth again during their cycle.  Yeah, right.

Stories like this on their face sound like big-time fake propaganda.  I'll bet the source was a mainstream one.  Do you really think there are people out there that have millions of dollars to play with but are simultaneously so stupid as to become the centerpiece of an article meant to 'show' the masses how easily it is to lose millions in crypto - just like that.  I call bullshit.

All this crap is meant to convince people they need guardians, bankers, more regulations, etc.

Don't fall for it.

Collect and hold.  That and spread the word every day.

The reason why the whale died without his members knowing his wallet login and private keys is to avoid exposing his wallet to danger and only way to avoid this kind of things happening again is saving a copy of ones private keys in a bank deposit which will be release to ones kids after departure.

Then just hand him the seed just incase, it is as simple as that.
You can also use multi signature in case of him trying to take the tokens without you knowing so that you dont need to worry anymore.

These are digital assets and it means they can be backed up somewhere and given out as properties in a will to people closest to you. This is why, it is necessary and important to share some of the most kept secrets with someone you trust. This way, in the event of your demise, the assets live on forever waiting to be retrieved. This is important and should be consider by all amongst men.

It's really important and it's recommended to create a video that will give instruction where you kept your private keys and how everything works, those tokens/coins you are holding could be worth hundred times of its value today, so better start creating one now.

My token is really stored safely in the wallet. And so far, I don't want to sell the ICO coin that I followed from 2017. The reason is that I lost the moment at ATH last year. A little makes me regret, but there is still hope.

I thought about this question, even when I registered my first wallet. And as far as I remember, there was even some kind of ICO at the end of 2017, which offered the service like transfer of wallets by inheritance jeje I think you need to always have a fallback in such a case.

There is no special way that really works when someone who loses the private key or he has died, the wallet that has been returned will be opened and retrieved.

Maybe it's time for us to entrust someone and give them a private key or anything that relates to our wallet. Unless we will only let that the assets we have settle down just like that.

I don't want to bury my tokens without any chance for me to give something worth for my family especially for my kids. But if I don't tell anything to them, I will go with all of the tokens I have in my funeral and I cannot gives benefits to them. actually people can inherit their coins by giving all their wallet data but most people don't think so, they fear that wallet security will be weak and no longer have privacy, but everyone must have people they trust to know all assets and also be given access to manage those assets so that when he dies the coin will not be a coin in vain

You give your details account on your family with enough knowledge about cryptocurrency, if you give without enough knowledge let say your brother, sister or even partner in life but considered that they have the idea. Just prepare them in advance we are not immortal we dont how long we stay in earth even in a blink we will gone.

Give them a locker key where we have stored all the things related to our crypto investments including private keys is the thing we need to do when we are alive ecause atleast we have given some meaning to the money which was earned all our life but when we don't have ayone to give just give it to charity if you knows you are not going to be here longer.

Well at my home family members are still learning about cryptocurrency & I don't have any problem with sharing my access to wallet details with them. There was one project called DigiPulse which was offering solution to the same problem with goal to ensure that people pass their digital assets on to the rightful inheritors, in case of the owner’s death and to tackle the issue of escheatment. But in December 2018 they de-tokenized their project from their native token DGPT as they failed to attract more user to use their services & the concept of the project was great but looked like they did not got good response from the crypto commnunity.

I guess you are referring this Cryptocurrency Owners Can't Access Funds After Exchange CEO Dies—Because No One Knows the Password (http://fortune.com/2019/02/04/cryptocurrency-quadrigacx-gerald-cotten-frozen-funds/).
This is just one scenario you are quoting, there are many cases like cryptocurrency worth million of USD is gone forever. For instance, $190 Million in Crypto Gone Forever, How Canada’s Biggest Bitcoin Exchange Lost it All (https://www.ccn.com/190m-gone-how-canada-biggest-bitcoin-exchange-lost-it).
But things like losing all your currency as you die can simply be avoided by telling your next of kin about your login details including the private keys. Sooner or later we all have to die and cryptocurrency cant be retrieved once you are gone or your coins are stolen. This must be kept in mind by all cryptocurrency investors regardless of how big or small there portfolio is.

you can not trust anyone in life, you must trust someone (a family member) to leave a copy of the private keys of our wallet where we keep the altcoins...

This is something that should be addressed if you are holders of many coins and you have a large amount of coins, we are in a bear market and what if the coins or tokens that you are holding that are worth a penny today will worth hundreds of dollars, you will be leaving a huge fortune to your children and grandchildren so prepare one now.

If there are no crypto-oriented friends in your environment, it makes sense to create a video message (on several electronic media) with the basics of cryptography, with step-by-step instructions and security rules, to avoid leakage of personal data when working with malicious sites

If I hold an asset or assets which I manage its private keys, I will entrust it to someone,  either my family or wife. I will let someone know about this assets and also about the private keys and should incase I am gone one day, they can have access to it.

If there are no one knows about the details to access that tokens, then it would keep stays on it place without anyone able to retrieve it. and the condition would be just when we loss our private key that hold our tokens in it.

Yeah, I'm ready for that. ;) I believe that I do not owe anything to my family and my family does not owe me anything, so I do not have to bequeath my cryptocurrency to my family.

I think this is a serious issue but it can only be resolved by the holder of the crypto. I mean make a video about all its assets and keep that video safe and once he dies, his kins should have access to it and that way they can still use the coins he hold.

I told my mother about my activities with my property. But I know that she doesn't know anything about computers and cryptocurrencies. That's what I worry about. Maybe my token will be forgotten if I die
yes, obviously, those tokens would stay in your wallet and keep on experiencing the ups and down in the market while you would stay calm in peace. This is the reason many people get their businesses documented. In my country, if you do not have someone who could claim the inheritance, the government would take all the wealth you leave behind. But, this rarely happens because almost everyone has someone who knows about their business and documentation.

It really wasn't a whale. The dead man was the CEO of an exchange. Si, it was a collection of clients cryptocurrencies his exchange was holding. It's sad though. That said.

For me, I think the best way to safeguard against such is to write out one's details and tuck them somewhere safe with someone close (one without crypto interest) knowing about it. It could also do well to leave a Will behind on how to locate that diary in case of one's demise.
