Title: Notify User when they've been quoted
Post by: squatz1 on February 21, 2019, 07:13:03 AM
I've looked in the post history for this thread and I can't find this anywhere, so I think this is a pretty helpful feature in other forums that I'm on.

Notifying a user if they've been quoted, makes it a lot easier to respond to people as you know that you're being talked to (or commented on what you've said)

Though I can see the strain on server resources, so make notifications only possible for threads that you've indicated you want it done for (like the current notification system for threads)

Let me know!

If I remember correctly, there is a plugin for this available in the SMF library.

You are looking for the Piggy's notification bot.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5023605.0

You can try the new notification system, in order to use it send a pm to Maggiordomo (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=2340148) by placing in the subject subscribe and in the body a link to a thread you created (the thread must be on the Archival board anywhere else won't work), this will be used to notify about you being mentioned or quoted across all the forum. You will receive a message confirming you are signed up and some basic information.
When somebody will type @yourUsername or @your=Username (if you have spaces in your username, they need to be replaced with = ) you will get one or more notifications in your thread.

Isn't that related to the use of @ tagging? The plugin reports on the use of the quote feature in a post, and it doesn't require any extra posting. I'll try it out on one of my SMF forums, and see how it works.

You get notification if someone posts your username. Since the bot reads trough the "recent posts", if someone edit his post after he has posted it and add your name, you won't be notified.
Otherwise, for posts like yourname, @yourname, "yourname", quoting you,  etc. you will be notified.
AFAIK if your username is in a hyperlink format, the bot cannot read trough links and you wont be notified for this input.

I am agreed with OP. I also thinking about this feature. Really this feature will help to clarify the question answer completely. Some time we post something in this forum and if anybody quote that post for asking another question then we can not find any quick notification. And we can not reply quickly. So its help to answer quickly to any question.

But it also has some boring things that when we create a topic and maximum members are quote  the post and continuously  answering. So always we can get some boring notification.

There is already a fix for this. Read iasenko's reply a few posts above yours. With Piggy's notification bot you get notifications via telegram or in a thread you created on the forum every time someone quotes your post or mentions your name like I just did above.

If forum allow multi quoting then it is the most shittiest feature that will be added. 3-4 people will be notified for a response and it might not be useful to them at all.
Just wondering ,will it send notification to user who is quoting himself/herself?

There is this option which you can enable/disable.

Automention,  activates/deactivates notification while your username or alias is being mentioned by you

Just follow the instructions in the thread and put your selected option in the PM being sent to the bot.

It's really useful, set it up for yourself and let us know if you need someone to quote you to test if it works fine for you as well, it's a really good thing to have here, you'll see

Can't it just be implemented inside forum code? May be have separate tab for quotes like 'alert' or something. It will make things easier.

I don't think Theymos have the time for this, he has already quite long to-do list and this is probably somewhere in the bottom of it.
That's why the community is trying to help him with project like this, like BPIP, etc..
We have to help eachother, and we are doing it quite well I think :)

squatz1 , you should receive a a message from Maggiordomo, as I have just quoted you here.

Edit: @Iasenko, yes, I saw it (after creating this post) on @squatz1's archival thread (logically visible to all), but my quote has not been detected yet, so I'm keeping a lookout for it. Looks like it is giving this quote a pass.

It's working, I tested it and I got confirmation that he was notified, but I deleted my comment since it was only test, to avoid the spam in a way. :)
This is one of the most useful tools in the forum together with the BPIP :)
