Title: Ban Appeal Sub-board
Post by: odolvlobo on February 25, 2019, 03:21:29 AM
I apologize if this has already been suggested.

I don't read Meta very much, but when I do I notice that there are always several current ban appeal threads, as well as several threads with users asking why they were banned or their posts are deleted. Perhaps it would be helpful if there were a board focused specifically on actions by moderators and appeals by users. Moderators could post who was banned and why, and users could appeal their bans there and ask why posts are deleted.

It had been suggested before.

Topic: New Child Board for banned users... (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5056746)

<...> Of course I do understand that being banned could be a disaster for each user and there have to be a place for threads related to this matter (and the meta section seems the most appropriate). What even more important creating a thread about banned account in Meta section is the only permitted activity for banned people (rule 25th). But maybe considering a really large amount of similar threads, it would be a good solution to create a Child Board especially for this...  I think it could clean a bit Meta board... <...>

I don't think the banned chaps need any special attention by creating a board for the to appeal from. In most cases the culprits definitely know why the have been banned, but they stubbornly refuse to admit it.

If aboard get created this will instead encourage more of those folks to come out and post their ban appeals even for cases like blunt plagiarism and this will lead to more work load for the mods.

Even for topics that are deleted I don't see much deal about them since we always get a PM of the topic that was deleted and you can make a guess why it was deleted based on other posts.

This is probably a good way to keep the discussion in the meta clean and only up to the development of the forum. This will also save the time for moderation to sort out the list of banned appeal's in meta as you will get all of those in one place which makes it easy to handle. Meta should totally be based on the conversation related to development of the forum and suggestions related to it.

Also, as per the rules, a banned account could only post in meta with its alt for ban appeals and nowhere outside it else it's a ban evasion. We could apply just similar rules to the new banned account sub board section which will keep all the conversation in one sub-board and easy to access to mod and also for normal users.

This suggestion is already discussed here, but as per I see, global mods do not find it much important though.

5 out of 35 isn't a lot and I don't think every separate issue needs its own sub.

Some of the previously discussed related topics are:

Subforum for account ban request (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4460980.0)

Sub/Child board for Account Issues (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4610463.0)

New Child Board for banned users... (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5056746.0)

The number of ban appeals topics has gone down a lot, check the last pages of meta starting february (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=24.14960;sort=first_post), we have around 10 ban appeals in a month, and I think if we count the posts we have biggers topics discussing banned user options and ban procedures than ban appeals.

Probably plagiarists have learned that it makes no sense to appeals a ban when all you've done around here was copy pasting.
The sub-board made sense a year ago when we had 3-4 of those a day but not anymore.

Already theymos made changes for the message on their profile when they banned ad he mentioned that if someone want to appeal for ban it should be through email so better change the rules now.Once you are banned no more appeal threads only though the email will be better.

Moderators could post who was banned and why, and users could appeal their bans there and ask why posts are deleted.
Moderators seldom post the reason why a user got banned in those ban appeal threads because they have too much to do and to little time to do it in. Sometimes they do but usually the reason, which is mostly plagiarism, gets found out by a number of good investigators who go through the modlog and user's post history and find plagiarised content. A new sub-board would clean the Meta section of ban appeal threads but it wouldn't increase the communication between the mods and the banned users.
