Also from canada here, btw.

My personal and initial reaction the news was positive, but I don't think we'll see an uptick until these regulated exchanges are up and running.

I expect we will still see some lower prices over the next few weeks, with the trend reversal happening about 21-28 days from now.

No concrete idea of the bottom, but I think it'll be around 500 USD.

Did anyone actually read the article?

Companies can submit "applications" despite there being no application process, requirements, or standards and they will be bound by rules which haven't even been written yet but may be written sometime around the end of the 2nd quarter.

In related news I am sure your local car dealership would be glad to sell you a car which doesn't exist yet with features and price to be determined next year.

That's true for now. But that'll all work itself out in time.

We might have a professional NY Bitcoin Exchange by the end of the year...

While everyone rejoices, let me be the wet blanket:

Licensing is fundamentally anti-competitive.  This is crony capitalism.

Does applying for a government permit make a business professional?

For each of you guys negging this news there are a dozen smart and motivated people in NY working late tonight to get in on this. Regulations are a small price to pay to be among the first legal exchanges in NYC. And these guys have been playing the regulation game for years, it comes with the territory.

Anywhere that bitcoin and fiat touch there is always going to be regulation/licensing etc... I've know this from the very start. There's no way around it.

I watched Lawsky at the hearings and saw him like a man open to the future. The right man at the right place at the right time.
So this is good news no matter if short or long term. Period!

It provides legitimacy in the eyes of many very important players. It would certainly make a lot of people feel that the exchange is more "professional" than an exchange without a government permit.

Bitcoin is the red-headed step child... This will be like sending him to College.

Seeing as money is speech and everything, and inhibiting people from spending money how they choose to is a 1st amendment violation, doesn't the whole cryptocurrency regulation issue run into a wall of unconstitutionality? Oh no, that's right, only for corporations. Which are people. That have more rights than all the other people? The logic of the whole thing is a little confusing...

Bit license rule #1:  There are no rules in bit license.
Bit license rule #2:  Since there are no rules there's nothing to stop me from making more rules.
