Title: -4 Merit received, is it a bug?
Post by: coinlocket$ on February 27, 2019, 12:14:32 AM
Was reading here and I noticed this

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit;u=1246188

https://puu.sh/CSdWh/7d83a2d042.png

Is it a bug or someone removed them manually  ???

Removed by theymos.

IIRC, in this specific case, he removed the merits sent to users trying to get into DT so they could remove Lauda.

Edit: Sorry Ninja!! I didn't see your post before replying. Honestly I just thought it was a demerit type of situation. Your Uber merit detective work though looks more correct. Not trying to sling spam just trying to help. I had no idea the merit system was under such abuse symptoms. Kind of opens my eyes as to why the merit system is such a big controversy between some users now though.

It looks like the merits were removed by (Bitcoin Forum) for (deleted/off-topic/ignored)

Basically it's punishment for shitposting it looks like lol

Probably not a bug.
I literally just said what it is. C'mon... Go do your signature spam bursting somewhere else.

Anyways, I've found the source.

Is stingers still a merit source?

Not anymore. That's clear abuse, awarding merit for political reasons rather than any idea of quality. Only because he was a source, I effectively undid those merit sends. If he had not been a merit source, I still would've blacklisted anyone who got into DT1 through that type of shenanigans.

The point was to undo all of the effects (over multiple steps) of that source's recent sends. Beyond that, the individual negated merit transactions weren't important.

"create a new topic. (82 posts by 26 users with 23 merit deleted.)"

First time I see this warning about the amount of deleted Merits. It would be interesting to see that on a topic that was not self-moderate. It seems to me to be something very rare, yet, it would be important information that could go unnoticed if it were not a self-moderate topic.

Please, take a look at this case.

<...> Can you suggest to hanspeter77 to contact theymos and ask to reverse the merit transactions? He's done this before for a hacked account. This would also kill the farmed accounts.

We should be able to give negative merits to all of the posters who create those dreadful thread titles. But then, if they stopped using them, we wouldn't know that the thread wasn't worth opening, let alone reading. :)

The negative sMerit TXs emitted by the forum, to counter some positive sMerit TXs which were related to merit abuse, are currently a small number: 16 TX with an aggregate of -104 sMerits.

It’s a good way of reverting merit for abusive cases, but does have a few small minor drawback when keeping track of events:

- The message Id seems to be cero, while the original message normally still remains. Perhaps using the same Id as the original positive TX would make tracking clearer.

- The original sender still counts as having sent those positive sMerits (from A->B), although they were cancelled through (Bitcointalk Forum)’s negative TXs.

Got it, a merit source has been removed and Theymos removed his smerit.

Closing the thread.
