Title: Alternatives to Coinbase?
Post by: kon21 on February 27, 2019, 07:17:59 PM
Hello Bitcoin Forum.

Can anyone suggest a good alternative to Coinbase?
I personally don't have much respect for the company with their recent actions and many failed wire-transfers in the past.

The reasons I use Coinbase are...

1. Instant bank USD -> Coinbase USD wallet and I can make a BTC purchase right away (unfortunately paying their high fee).
2. I can use limit orders to purchase/sell BTC without a fee
3. Trying to get my folks into crypto, so I like their simple interface to buy/sell crypto for those not using Coinbase Pro.

Are there any other exchanges that I can use that have these features?

TY!

Maybe you can take a look at the following thread

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2730633.0;all

where you will find a list of alternatives to coinbase. The thread is one year old but as far as I can see still valid.

Maybe Gemini and Bitstamp for the trading feature you're looking for. But as a web wallet with a "friendly" UI like Coinbase has, to be honest, I don't think there is any, or at least not coming to my mind. As we all have different preferences...

There won't be much else out there with that simplified UI. I'd go with Gemini if I was in the US myself but it's definitely an exchange, not a buying service.

There is also this - https://cash.app/help/us/en-us/1110-bitcoin

But I don't know if it has limit orders.

There's also Abra - https://support.abra.com/hc/en-us/articles/360000629091-How-do-I-buy-Bitcoin-with-Abra-

But I don't know a single thing about that.

Depending on your location I can suggest different exchanges that can give the same advantages on Coinbase. Kraken is mainly best in terms of exchange rates but Bitstamp verification is a pain for passing KYC&AMl.

I think this article is what you need

https://www.bitpremier.com/buy-bitcoins

You can use your credit card to buy Bitcoin on few other exchanges instead of Coinbase but it still depend on your region but for now, Coinbase is still the most popular exchange to purchase cryptocurrency by visa/debit card.

Coinbase often freezes withdrawals for a few days. it's unacceptable, I think. to manage funds faster and safer we should use trusted exchange services, to exchange coins in a few minutes instead of a few days.
so, your question is about alternative, my recommendation is - Changenow. I read its reviews on trustpilot and find it reliable.

Maybe Gemini and Bitstamp for the trading feature you're looking for.

Quite agree with the Gemini, and to add the list, you can also use CoinMama and CEX but this still vary on your country.

Perhaps, OP can consider local bitcoin, though it's not on his criteria but he can save his life for paying huge fee in coinbase. It also accommodate fees in cash or bank wire transfer, all depends on the agreement of seller and buyer.

I recommend Bitfinex, it is an exchange that accepts Fiat money and with cryptocurrencies, in addition, many people use it as their personal bank account, it is really very good and the rates are not that expensive. And to trade you can place your Stop Loss and Take Profit at the same time, as well as your orders in limit, and allow the Margin Trade.

You serious? You have to route your money via bizarro offshore accounts that appear and disappear. They may also decide to stop bothering with dollars altogether for a few months again. At one point they'd only accept new customers with deposits over $10,000.

It's the absolute worst place to recommend to a noob who wants to make the occasional buy.

CoinMama just suffered a database leak, while CEX has lots of withdrawal problems just like what happens with any Cryptocapital exchange (Bitfinex, Quadriga, etc). Do you seriously think they're a good alternative?

maybe there are some exchanges that apply limit order purchases or sales without credit, but that is only a few now, there are so many exchanges that still apply fees. You can visit the bitstamp to see more details.

About the only other site I have known to be similar in that factor is www.circle.com with their simple buy and sell feature for their investing side of the website and app. They even have a portfolio automatic distro feature when you spend a set amount. You can pick from different coin groups or all that they offer as one group. They sort them by flux of the coin and market use and adoption. The only downfall is you can't send or receive it's just a buy or sell type  of platform.

I am using Coinbase and i think it is the best one. But still you do not have control over private keys so in case of hack or scam attempt, all our funds will be lost.

I think it is normal for any exchange to freeze the withdrawal for any purpose which can be security purpose too. Whenever there is any big transactions which is not normal, the exchange should freeze the withdrawal for sometime and see it there is any hack attempt.

I read some artcile at the internet, the fee for using a service coinbase was really high for the tax, maybe you can try OTC Trade with someone by using a service escrow.

There is no exchange without its limitation and coinbase is at the top of list of exchanges when it comes to exchanges that trades in digital currencies but the exchange has its own share of drawback too like the ones you mentioned, limited crypto currencies, limited payment methods and so on and considering all these facts, people like you and I are exploring other alternatives to coinbase and during the cause of my research I found out about this exchange that is quite better than coinbase which is GEMINI, Gemini offers cold storage  wallet, no transaction fee and offer support for quite numbers of crypto currencies.

I will advise you gradually shift your attention or trading from using bitfinex to other stable exchanges before you end up regretting later.

Though I am fully aware that running crypto business is not an easy business to run but should not be support for clients, it might not have happened to you but when it comes to losing money on bitfinex, it’s rampant without any form of support. Look at 9th of February, they suddenly shut down without giving any reason or tendered apology. So look for other stable exchanges you can use such as Binance.

Did you tried Localbitcoin? Which is actually charges no fee for purchasing from a trader and their deposit and withdrawal fee are also very less and you are not going to get scammed while buying BTC on LBC.

From what country you from?

The features you want are always present (as it should be) on a crypto local exchanges.

Try to search for it's available on your country. Or else I will say you must stick with Coinbase and deal with the fees especially your concern about no.1. The instant transfer from bank is one of a good advantages.

And by the way, how much fees we are talking here?

Although, there are MANY alternatives you could call for Coinbase, but top ones start from Binance and others. There are MANY Crypto Exchanges (https://cryptolinks.com/cryptocurrency-exchange) out there, so you can pick one that suits you and one that makes you comfortable.

I don’t really feel that there is any rocket science to it, but all more to do with common sense only. So, our selection should be made in very careful way, which will also keep us safe and secure with everything.

We're building this out by country where to buy (and sell) bitcoin anywhere.

https://www.bestbitcoinbuyers.com/

It's split between the "bank connected" exchanges, Anonymous Options available per country and any other sources like ATM's or meetups even. Low fee bitcoin ATM's are rather rare, some places seem quite keen on them though...

Every country is going to have different "types" of buying and selling over the next 10 years scaling up or down based on their national currency/politicians actions towards bitcoin and "crypto"

We just want to see which countries go "underground" and which ones allow it with their national banks easily...it's going to be interesting!

Why not try it via Forex brokers? I believe that’s so much more comfortable thing and you get greater scope when it comes to making profits, so why not that? I myself trade with FreshForex and feel so much better than a specific Crypto exchange. Anyhow, it’s down to personal choice.

I do not like Forex and will not suggest anyone who is in crypto to start forex trading. Forex is quite different from Crypto and it is more dependent upon TA and there is no such things like Dependency upon news etc. Also forex market is not as volatile as crypto market is and also I think that crypto has a better future as compare to forex.

You have traded previously? Maybe no because you are wrong with your assessment. Forex is not too much difference from Crypto and I say this because I trade since last 7-8 years with FreshForex broker. I started Crypto trading 6 months ago. Trading on currency pairs or crypto is same but only the way of analyzing is different. Crypto is not entirely dependent on news but news create impact on it. Forex is also volatile when you use some pairs, but some are not volatile. I also understand that you maybe have not done trading or know about it much because Forex is legitimate business under which Crypto is also run. It's like Forex is the body and currency pairs/crypto/commodities and others are parts of it. I think you maybe will understand now. Also you can check education sites like Babypips to learn more about Forex.

Update on searching for a Coinbase alternative in the US.
Short answer, Coinbase is still the best option.

Coinbase has very high ACH limits and limit buys of only 0.15% if you wait 1 week before buying on Coinbase Pro.
Gemini starts with ACH limit of only $500 per day than goes to $1000 per day. Buy fee is 1%.
Kracken does not accept ACH so wire +fee is the only option.
Cash app appears to be 1.2% above spot.

Please keep this thread updated if you find better fee structure than Coinbase on both ACH and fees.

Add Kraken, and everything is said. They are 100% trustable and everything works like it should be.
