Post by: CoffeeTune on February 28, 2019, 02:04:41 PM
Hey guys how you doing, hope y'all well.
I run a Pop-up Coffee Bar inside the Record Store in Camden / London.

Yesterday I announced that I accept Bitcoin for your caffeine fix:

https://twitter.com/Coffee_Tune/status/1100734272120475651?s=19

To make most of it I need a good list of Bitcoin Merchant Directories where I can add my business.

I added my business in few of them but I need much more. If you have a y link or any handy list, please share. Have a good one!

Hey, I've been doing well and wishing your bar doing good too!

Can't figure out if this section is already enough for your announcement or you can move this to Goods (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=51.0) to gain more exposure about your espresso bar.

I've searched with these directories and I hope this helps.
  • http://www.thebitcoinpage.com/

It's also good if you will create your own store website.

Can you give us some insights how many people are using it?

How do you handle it with your bookkeeping? Is it connected to your machine (meaning the one you use for payments in cash/debit card etc)?

Can you give us some insights how many people are using it?

This is for sure will help bitcoin to grow more in the future and also by promoting it in London, it will be so nice idea, I wish you the best luck on your project.

I hope that many other Coffee Shop or MiniMarket in near of your Caffee can accept Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash too as you and I hope that you can start to use the other coins as the other payment.
Of course, this will help cryptocurrency spreading around your city, and I am sure that soon, people will asking you what cryptocurrency is and how they can get the crypto.
You need to be ready to explain cryptocurrency so you can get another extra customer who pays with crypto.

It is good thing that Bitcoin is starting to be seen as a currency and not as asset.

To popularize cryptocurrencies there should be more shops/caffees like this:)

Really is a stuff to hear and really glad my heart. This is a call to other retail stores especially regions where bitcoin has not been declared illegal. The adoption should start from even little wares and big stores will have a reference point.

Cool! I know, it is just couple days passed since your announcement, but how is it going, mate?
And one more question: what is about taxation for your crypto profit? I do not know how it is in England about this point.

Title: Re: Just Started to Accept Bitcoin in my Espresso Bar

what is about taxation for your crypto profit?

Most payment gateways bill you in bitcoin but change it to fiat immediately. It is taxed as any other coffee would be.

Also this is not a private trading income, but a revenue for the company. The tax is calculated based on this, not on what assed has been used.

Well done OP! How well has your business done?

Here's what I strongly suggest you do, in addition to the listing suggestions:

1. Get your own announcements on Bitcoin subreddit and update your stuff there. Do the same ann threads here (why not?). Use the same for twitter and hashtag yourself.
2. Open a profile on yelp/google/tripadvisor. Make sure you add "Bitcoin accepted" to your business info. Now anyone using these engines to find coffee will see you take bitcoin!

It is good thing that Bitcoin is starting to be seen as a currency and not as asset.

To popularize cryptocurrencies there should be more shops/caffees like this:)

I think the actual users have always seen it as such. I've never considered those who buy and hold (or worse still, those who think they've bought but are actually only owning numbers in some accounts, like those ETFs or whatever form of derivatives).

You know how to popularise Bitcoin. Not more shops and cafes, but more users using, earning, spending and asking for places like this.

Good to hear another small business accepting Bitcoins. These are small news where we see bitcoin adaptation and soon these all combine will make bitcoin the main stream currency of the world one day.

This is surely a good initiative that needs to be encouraged by crypto enthusiasts and entrepreneur that in that little stall or store that you have, you can contribute your quote the continuous popularity of bitcoin which won't happen if there is no push from people like us. Eventually, when I would get to have a store, I would definitely accept bitcoin.

My advise is to try as much as possible to keep the thread active and updated as without that, it gets pushed to the back without anyone seeing the good work you are up to.

Thank you very much! As long as you are transparently able to show all the transections, you should be fine. At the end of the day money will enter your bank account. And I don't think BTC payments will be more than %1 of the total income. Seems like people hodling hard instead of using it :) let's see how it goes it's very new.

Thanks a lot for your support guys that means a lot to me. One week in, I've already started to feel people using BTC for investment mostly, nobody would travel from A to B to buy a coffee and spend bitcoin unless the shop is in their neighborhood. I hope I'm wrong :) it's not even profit oriented, I'm a big fan of Blockchain rather than Bitcoin. Practising it is the best way to learn but nothing is happening, I'll try my best to spread it around but I also don't wanna do aggressive marketing on all of the forums as most people using same major platforms. If I see a guy posting something similar on every platform, I would be annoyed :) my best change is for now are Bitcoin merchant Directories.

This is great! seeing someone who will take risk to accept bitcoin even though he/she knows that the price of it is not stable or it's volatile, I was happy that some of the community members of bitcointalk is starting to accept bitcoin as a mode of payment in their businesses, if I was to create a local store or any local service I might also accept Bitcoin or Ethereum (But the cryptocoins is really volatile and might be in debt or lose in my business someday lol) maybe accept a cryptocurrency to some small services or to some items that are not expensive so if the market falls I would not have a large effect to my business.

Its not a risk actually because he is not investing on bitcoin anyway , he only accepts payment via bitcoin which he can adjust the price of the product depending on the price of bitcoin  .  he wont loose this way  and besides , bitcoin is only an alternate option while fiats and other payment method are still available  .

Anyways , this is a another good news  . thanks to the op because he is helping the bitcoin to spread  and become recognizable by others  .

Congratulations, I support your business idea and I hope it's getting well. Hope you will not get disappointed at the end like some small enterpreneurs who faced difficulties. We have to admit that accepting Bitcoin as a payment in business is still rather risky and you can't be sure if you will be successful at the end. All the best with your business, hope it will help to promote Bitcoin too.

The bigger end to it that if market kept on rising or gets stable at certain level it will be god for this entrepreneurs who are taking initiative to accept the btc. But if it falls sharply or continue to dip people will move away from it as they might not like to make losses under such circumstances.

In the United States it is unwise to pay for things with crypto due to taxable event. Who really wants to track their coffee payments and figure out their cost basis just to buy coffee. Nobody. The vision of crypto as a day to day currency does not work well with taxes.

The vision of crypto as a store of value to buy a lambo or house makes a lot more sense.

That's good to know, every user of bitcoin who owns some business need to start accepting bitcoin. This will help with the wide spreading of bitcoin as well in the increase of other merchants accepting bitcoin similar to fiat currency. This will make more people use bitcoin directly whom at present convert to fiat and make use of bitcoin.

If a store accepts bitcoin it would be wise to not cash out to Fiat at the lows. Only cash out it bitcoin goes parabolic or at least way for bull season.

Makes no sense to me why a store cashes out to Fiat immediately. That 1 coffee sold would equal 20 coffee sold to that one customer if the store owner is patient and can wait for bull run.

If a store cashes out to Fiat immediately then they are not really adopting crypto to its fullest if you have to convert it. True crypto adopting means no Fiat conversion

Congrats OP, it's a good step. But on another hand I am very interested in how beneficial btc payment implementation will be for you. So can you answer me on these questions?
1. How good is your bar's location? Is it located in areas which is full of tourists or it's mostly for those who live nearby?
2. How much transactions have been done since you implemented it? If there was any, how much was on bitcoin and on bitcoin cash.

This option of accepting bitcoin in your bar is a welcome development at least this will opened up and encourage customers or consumers who hardly knew or have ever heard any information about bitcoin, to seek for relevant information about bitcoin going by the recent news that I read shows that 73% of UK consumers says they don't know much about cryptocurrency.
 https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5118390.0
I think setting up this bar will encourage other small scale businesses to adopt bitcoin payment as an alternative to fiat and other methods of payment of goods and services.

I realize you're just shitposting, but an espresso bar doesn't exist to gamble its revenue on currency fluctuations, and ultimately it doesn't make a difference to the bitcoin economy if a business converts to fiat immediately (which they pretty much all do).  Bitcoin still gets bought and sold and is circulated as a currency every step of the transaction.  Do you seriously expect this guy to just hodl all the bitcoin he makes from serving coffee?  What you wrote makes no sense.

Plus, he said this loud and clear:
I'm a big fan of Blockchain rather than Bitcoin.

Grrr.

If a store needs to convert to fiat at the end.  Then why even bother supporting btc payment at all.  Is their like a niche type of people that only have crypto in the area and no fiat or something? Ridiculous!

If your going to support the crypto cause have damn good business model and real need use case and need to.  Don't just  support crypto payment just for the sake of it.

I'm getting tired of these companies trying to support crypto when they really don't need to. We need real use case and this is not it!

We went through a big bear market so I have every right to ask those tough questions about real use cases and weed out things that work and don't work.

Yes I expect someone to hodl all their bitcoins they earn after an 85 percent drop. What i wrote makes a lot of sense and its quite plain and simple.

Wow, you are so great! I like how you in trend your current business. Even though there are only few percentage of people that uses crypto currencies compared to those people who uses fiat currencies, you give the crypto users the opportunity to have use crypto currencies as their medium for payment. This Espresso Bar have a high potential to go in trend as it have a lots of potential and on current factors. Crypto currencies may not be the payment medium globally but as the days goes by, the people are keep on coming and engage in the world of crypto.

That’s really cool. I do a clothing business and allow people to make mobile payments too, but I don’t accept bitcoin yet.

I’m just accepting bank transfers and there is QR codes banking system that is similar to like that of your bitcoin cards placed on the table, it allows my customers to scan and make payments to my bank account without having to ask for account number. I also accept card payments. Not considering crypto payments for now.

Because most businesses exist to make money and aren't just idealistic crypto supporters.  That's just the reality, and maybe I'm too cynical, but I suspect that most companies that accept bitcoin as payment are only doing so in order to expand their customer base.  Sure, there are some that genuinely are bitcoin supporters (like this guy with his espresso bar, and perhaps places like Veldt Gold and some others) but most are doing it only as a gimmick.  They know bitcoiners are hardcore and will seek out places to spend their crypto, so those businesses want to attract such customers.  The bottom line is that they want to maximize their profit, which is denominated in whatever their local fiat is.

I can tell by reading a lot of comments like the above that members here must be young and/or without any business experience, and that they don't know a lot about how the real world works in terms of businesses and how they operate.  You guys will learn eventually, just as I did.

As I said, I genuinely would like to see the espresso bar succeed and I'm not knocking him in any way for accepting bitcoin.  I think it's a great idea, and if he was close enough to me I'd be more than willing to be a bitcoin-paying patron of his establishment.  It's good for the bitcoin economy, regardless of whether he converts to fiat immediately.

This is great! seeing someone who will take risk to accept bitcoin even though he/she knows that the price of it is not stable or it's volatile,

It doesn't seem like a risk to me as the percentage of the BTC payments would be tiny compare to traditional payment methods. And again, it's not profit focused action. I just wanna learn about Blockchain by being part of it and I really really want to see some BTC fans buying some coffee with it and have a nice chat about crypto while he/she is sipping his/her drink.

Wow! I get amaze from people like you who manage to accept cryptocurrency as a payment. My country thinks it is fraud at the moment so it isn't developing well here. Hope you get to invite more customers since you have added another payment option for them It would be fun if you name some of your coffee like "The Bitcoin Coffee" or "The HODL toddle Coffee. That will help the promotion as the customer's may spread it quickly with a silly name.

Hey there,
1- it's not a great location. It's inside the Record store but the town having almost 30M people a year ( Camden Town)

2-since I announced, only people been sending some small amount of tips and only 1 person purchased coffee with BTC after he saw it in here :)

My tweet about it has reached almost 200k reach and plenty of engagement but at the end of the day nobody wants to travel to buy a cuppa with BTC.

I hope this trend should continue and more people should engage and adopt bitcoin. We should spread such positive vibes and news about bitcoin all over the world, so other people are also tempted to make such moves and this way crypto will be used everywhere.

Atleast theres still 1 person who do purchase up some cuppa with his BTC  ;D

As expected that not all places do really have that kind of Bitcoin adoption/awareness but atleast you have seen that theres someone who do able
to purchase and sparks its interest. It might take time for it to be popular, just have patience and just keep going.

especially regions where bitcoin has not been declared illegal.

What regions are you referring to?
I guess s/he could be referring to regions where the government hasn't come out to declare Bitcoin illegal but still hasn't thrown its weight in support of it. I think that's the kind of situation we have in Africa where I come from.

Anyway, I feel glad anytime I hear or read news bits of merchants making inroads with Bitcoin. We need more of this.

Hello and congratulations for your growing business! I have a few questions in mind that needs to be clarified based on your experience ever since you started accepting bitcoin as an alternative payment:

1. How many people preferred paying in bitcoin compared to using cash? Follow-up question, was your business able to attract more customers due to implementing this kind of change?;
2. How did this affect the overall profit margin of the business?; and
3. Were the transactions taxable or is it a loophole in order to avoid paying taxes?

I am hoping that you shed me some light regarding my queries since it can also be an opportunity for other future businessmen to accept bitcoin as a payment. I wish nothing but the best to your business, OP.

I think it won't be so hard to understand that bitcoin payment implementation can be done for extra comfort. When you see visa/mastercard, skrill, paypal, webmomey, yandex money, neteller and others as a payment option in store, this doesn't mean shop owner supports them, no, he/she doesn't give a shit to those companies, it's just to make payment more available for everyone amd every type of customer. Imagine, I am in restaurant, seems I don't have cash and just realizef that I left my card in store but I remember I have money on my bitcoin wallet and store accepts it too, it escapes me from current weird situation. Can you understand now why wide choise of payment is good?

Those people are great who sent tips to you, seems they appreciated the fact you integrated btc payment. If it doesn't affect your budget, then why not to keep it? I think it's still unusual for people when they see someone paying with btc and seems everyonr tries to pay with what's common, possibly.

Crypto should be spend everywhere where fiat can be spend. Although this seems a little impossible to implement at this present time but little adoptions like these shows that we are heading towards the pure crypto world where the fiat will have no role and every transaction will be using the crypto currencies.

I beleive that implementation wasn't that easy but I hope with time this would become usual thing for many businesses. This should be one of examples how to implement cryptocurrencies in real life.

No need for the so called directories, the ones you’ve got is already enough and as long as you have the Bitcoin sign put up, anyone that comes and sees it already knows that you accept Bitcoin as payment. And when they leave they will also tell others about it and before you even get to know it, the news will spread around. All you need to do is just find the top directory and put your business there and nothing else.

It's really hard indeed to attract lots of people to buy something with bitcoin. The most users now just use it for an investment or trading place only. I hope, some days after your bar will be in demand by poeple who has bitcoin in there. Only a patient will aswers your effort and at least you are the person who has  a strong courage to take bitcoin in your business which I know that's not easy to take it.

Your making crypto sound like a hassle to accept when it is not.  It is very easy to accept crypto payments for your business, the only real downside is the volatility but that can often work in your favor when the price skyrockets.  Credit cards charge high fees from the seller's pocket so crypto helps negate this.

You might as well take a look at OpenBazaar and ModulTrade. These are the e-commerce platofrms based on crypto. It's said  you can get daily goods at lower prices and for crypto there. Same goes with automobiles I hear Mercedes can be bought for crypto today.

Yeah and it's not as if he's accepting only crypto for payments. He's giving alternatives for people who would like to use bitcoin or bch. All it takes is a little open mindedness and i know quite a number of businesses who also are doing the same thing.

Nice idea, but how about to add some stable coins like Tether ? Maybe in some ocasions it would be easier to calculate rate of paid coins. Today Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash have high volatility, so maybe not the best time to integrate these currincies as a payment method.

Been about a month plus since OP last posted in here. 200k views is incredible. 30m a year visitors to Camden is incredible. I've been to Camden Town as well so I know the crowd, and if there's really any segment of society liable to use Bitcoin, it's the kind that visits there. So to hear that only 1 guy paid in BTC (and hey, where else but someone from this forum, right?), I think this is yet another sign that Bitcoin's simply not at that level of adoption some people want to believe in.

1% of 30 million is 300k. 0.01% adoption from tourists wealthy enough to visit london and having cash to spend in Camden? 3,000. If even 1 % of that see that coffee that's 30 people.

That's just the way it is. But that's good news for those not yet into Bitcoin!

Most people don't have the same acceptance on it so may I suggest that it's better to replace it with Ethereum. And please show us the results of this so if it is positive then it can encourage other more businesses.

People using Bitpay which is the world's most active and most used payment processor all used Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash. I mean, if you used Bitcoin then you automatically have Bitcoin Cash (if you had it before the fork),,, so it kind of makes sense to me. I only got Ether like long after I got BTC and I use it just to hodl and not to spend. BTC is still the payment crypto. BCH as well,,, not really ETH.

There have always been many frauds with products. Then the seller will rearrange the production date in order to sell a non-quality product. That delivery does not work efficiently, the products deteriorate and you have to recycle them. I am glad that ppl decide more n more involve the blockchain so that the buyer could see where the goods were produced n sell them in proper quality. I believe, coffee is only beginning

I agree with you. Blockchain is the technology of the future. And so that more people understand its importance and need more projects like this. there is a training base, starting from the basic concepts of blockchain and cryptocurrency, ending with advanced courses and tips for traders. Of course, people we are lazy creatures, but when the material is fed in a light form, it is easily perceived. More educated people - the closer we approach the time when blockchain technologies will be embedded in all walks of life. Btw, recently I found very interesting educational platform taklimakan. There are lots of info to learn about crypto , how it's used n how it can be implemented into human life

We must start with the banal financial literacy of the population. And then move on to advanced technologies like the blockchain. But I agree that there are a lot of interesting projects and I hope that countries will continue to better support blockchain startups.

We hope that there is more store offline can accept bitcoin and other coins as the payment because that will make people easy to choose the payment method for the transaction. When there is more and more store offline use that way, I am sure that the cryptocurrency will grow and more people will join into cryptocurrency.

That's really cool, but since you started accepting bitcoin in your bar, how many have made payments in bitcoin ? Have there been many people that chose to make payment in bitcoin ?

Because where I live I have seen someone that tried to do the same thing but it didn't work out, cause there isn't a lot of people that makes use of bitcoin here that I'm living, though everyone knows about it, but the thing is that they don't want to make use of it, just what those I know mainly do is to invest and nothing else.

Currently bitcoins transaction take a lot of time even for a single confirmation. This is the main reason why bitcoin is not widely used in common public places where we need much faster transaction speed. Until this problem is not resolved completely, we will not see bitcoin to be accepted on physical stores and bars. No Shopman and customer can wait for 20-30 + mins only for the tx confirmations.

This is really cool, very convenient to use when we just want to use our mobile phones to pay using bitcoin is really easy, I hope we can also have like this in our country soon. This is really great and I think more stores will accept bitcoin as an option of payment now. Hopefully, this would be implemented all over the world soon.

The more news like these are spread widely, the more likely bitcoin prices and volume will rise. The main reason is because if bitcoin is used in our daily life then more and more people will use it as currency and not commodity. Also it gives encouragement to other businesses and shop to start accepting bitcoin and increase their user base.

This is really a good initiative to support the wide spreading of the bitcoin usage around the globe. What we do with our business in an advanced way one day gets followed by the one next to us. The acceptance in the Espresso Bar will help with more such business people start to accept bitcoin. Maybe at the initial days there won't be big profits which will surely get good return when the usage keeps counting.

It is good to know that another merchant accepts bitcoin as payment in his coffee bar and this move will certainly help in speeding up the adoption of the cryptocurrency around the world. The more merchants uses bitcoin as a payment option, the more the demand for bitcoin will increase. Only few offline shops accept cryptocurrencies especially in my country because it is not yet popular on many businessmen.

It's good that your cafe has such a payment method in BTC for delicious coffee. The only problem is that while you are waiting for the receipt of BTC on your wallet can take a long time. You don't let the cafe client go until the funds are in your wallet? To make the transaction go quickly, you need to pay a large Commission, which can cost more than a Cup of coffee :(

You did a good job. But I do have a question, before you started accepting crypto (bitcoin) in your bar, was it done out of customer's request or you just decided that you should do such?? And how many people has come to your bar and made payments with Bitcoins?? Oh and before you get this, hope you know that you should also get to know the laws about Bitcoin in your country, in case your country is one of those that are jailing people for ten years for making use of cryptocurrency. Kudos man.

At first i was like " wow! Another shop acccepts bitcoin as payment, my time finally come and i can use it as a real currency" then after reading the post, it seems like our location is on the opposite side of the globe. Even though i want to buy in your cafe, your too far mate. Stores here in the country is so slow to accept BTC i hope i can avail or open soon.
It is pop coffee bar. Maybe, two months ahead star bucks will also merge this payment method. I love coffee. That is my morning's energy. It is also my night jamming friend. And it is good if I can buy a cup of it using my bitcoin. If ever there is an access in my town, I would not hesitate to use bitcoin to pay it.

This is going to help convince a lot of. Your customers to try out Bitcoin. Those that never heard about cryptocurrency before would be forced to try it out and see how it works, even those that knows about it and have never made use of it would like to try it. By the time they come there to take coffee like up to ten times and keeps on seeing that Bitcoin logo, they would be forced to try it out someday. Keep it up you're doing a great job and I hope your business continues to grow very big more than what it is now, so that it can help to get many people to make use of cryptocurrency.

This is great! Even if it is just a small scale business just like yours, it is still a progress towards mass adoption of bitcoin/cryptocurrencies.
Hopefully, some other business within your vicinity would follow suit and maybe you should also try accepting other cryptocurrencies, not the shitty ones but those which are on the top 10 of CMC.
Who knows, maybe someone with a bunch of Litecoin would want to drink a barrel of coffee. ;D

Further more it is always difficult to take such a step and once people see bar accepting bitcoin, other coffee and drinking bars may introduce the option of payment in crypto. The important thing here is that many business introduce bitcoin as payment method and sooner we see all the malls and shops give us the option of payment in crypto.

In my country as well people are totally free to use crypto currency to buy goods and to sell, it made our life easy when you are at work we can easily get profit, when you are going out away with allot of money it can put harm for your life but if you have bitcoin or crypto it will be easy to carry safely with you.

That’s really nice, it’s not everyone that can do such a thing, you have really tried in doing this. But one thing I’d like to let you know is that you’re going to be careful, because you know that the price of Bitcoin is not like fiat that is mainly stable, so you should be checking on your coins to know when the price starts to fall and why I’m saying this is because you will be needing those money you are paid to buy the things you will need to continue you’re business the next day. So you will have to be checking in on it and know what is happening, so that you don’t abandon the money and it will end up losing value. Unless you plan to hodl it.

Bitcoin has one drawback that is, it is slow in confirmation time. There are many other altcoins whom transactions gets confirmed within seconds the transactions are made. Business may prefer such altcoins in the business which requires quick confirmation like in coffee bar etc.

There's lightning already, most business such this used lightning, no confirmation needed or whatsoever. In the case of OP, well, he can implement this one on his store, and I'm sure many will like it.
But at this moment he just have to understand that once there's a huge backlog in the network there might people will not use BTC but only cash or any alternatives that  the store accepts.

Everyone doesn't have the mind to do it indicating volatility, transaction fee, transaction confirmation as an issue. You've made it happen in reality, this can be done only by users who trust in it, as well have love to innovation. Maybe at the beginning there won't be much of revenue, surely the change happens as the crypto adoption around the world makes it to be a regular usage currency someday.

its not about bitcoin but its a marketing but you have to check if its legal and I think you should forget bitcoin transaction don't use the money make a goal example 2023 so the 10 $ can be worth 1000 $
