Title: Do you know how should be your topic title?
Post by: TalkStar on March 03, 2019, 05:10:45 AM
Hello Everyone,

Welcome guys to my thread. Today I am going to share an important guideline about thread title. Before today I wasn't careful enough about this matter. Personally I always try to read old topic during my leisure time to expand my own knowledge about this community. As a regular approach today I found something very useful for our community users & I think its gonna help newbies like us.

Although I know using full quote isn't a good practice but for better understanding I am going to use this here:
Moderators here typically don't require you to use good titles for topics, but I thought I'd post some guidelines for anyone wondering how best to write a title.

Include enough info in the title so that readers can mostly guess what your topic is about. Try to condense your topic's main idea into a few sentences. Ideally, people should be able to write useful, on-topic replies by just reading the title (though this sometimes isn't possible).

Terrible titles include:
- "A question"
- "I was wondering..."
- "Someone help me"
These titles are better, though still not great:
- "A question about Bitcoin-Qt"
- "Survey of the community"
- "I have a problem with the forum"
These titles are good:
- "Bitcoin-Qt takes too long to start. How can I speed it up?"
- "Poll: What is your gender?"
- "Whenever I try to send a PM, the forum gives me an error"

When asking a question, never use a title like "How to send BTC"; it makes the topic look like a guide on how to do something instead of a question about how to do it.

Some people like to put "tags" in the title within brackets. Like "[GLBSE] [ANNOUNCE] ASDF: Generic asset". I personally don't like this style. I prefer to include the tag info within the sentence, like "Announcing ASDF, a generic asset on GLBSE". When tags are really necessary, it may indicate that a new subforum should be created.

Use normal capitalization, not "newspaper capitalization". "Thread title style guide" instead of "Thread Title Style Guide". Capitalize the first letter of the title unless it a trademark like "eMachines".

Omit unimportant leading words. "Selling $100" instead of "I'm selling $100". Other than that, it's best to write a grammatically correct sentence if doing so does not make the title annoyingly long.

If the title is composed of only one sentence, don't include a period at the end. If it contains two or more sentences, put a period after each sentence, including the last. Questions must end with a question mark.

It is to notify all our newbies that this quote is the guideline of our forums admin @theymos. Where he explain the whole matter about writting a proper title for a thread. There some special things described beautifully such as terrible title, medium quality title, good title, subjects clarity, writting tags, use of capitilazation and avoiding unimportant words. Personally I got clear ideas from these about which are better to use or not as a title. I will try my best to follow those instruction in future.

In my opinion forum admin described about this by his own and hopefully if we follow carefully then it will obviously going to increase our threads quality.

To add to that, those who add emojis and memes to their topic title.or those whose post content is made up of so much images.
Those are wrong methods of starting a topic, and could straight away be a factor that makes the content of the topic look less sensible than it is,by undermining what was written in the op

When starting a topic try and make it as plain as possible, and except when extremely needed do not add huge images or increase the text font

I keep my title simple and easy to understand and also I think we should put the title according to our content. Also if someone is not able to find a relevant title he/she can first take a tour to different section of bitcointalk forum to understand well.

Punctuation marks needs to be added if it is necessary which gives the attractions that this use has something interesting and having good grammar skills,in my opinion.

Good topic title or not, the quality of topics on the forum will definately improve if people started using the search function before starting a new topic.

I have come across this post sometime in the past, and I believe it's a thread that deserves to be a sticky, as this your reminder would very soon be lost in the mass of new threads.

Although I know using full quote isn't a good practice but for better understanding I am going to use this here:

If it is necessary as it is here, there is nothing wrong with quoting full posts. It all depends on it's relevance.

I ignore the indirect headlines or that talk about general ideas or public services because of the large number of people who will reply and then turn the whole topic into spam.
Thank you for highlighting some important additions about creating a title but keep it art as some people can get you by title only.

The shorter words, the better results. :P

It is really understandable when someone read the post title and post then tells the problem directly with all the information that certain faces or experienced a trouble/problem. I found some posters that post without further short explanation on what he/she experience about a wallet, securities and more.

I don't open threads with capitalised titles, or spammy threads with stupid smilies littered in the title. Just a simple text narrative in English with a hook to stimulate interest is best.

There should also be a guide on how to use the poll option. Newbies are restricted but I still come across unnecessary polls around the forum.
Forum polls should not lose their relevance on the forum due to abuse from some members.
Is it possible to report a poll, separately from the post itself, and have a moderators remove it? If the report is valid.

No. And honestly, it's not that big deal. If you create a legit and necessary poll, people will use it. If it's an unnecessary poll, just ignore it and move on to the thread. No one gets hurt.

Another important thing when you make your topic title - avoid clickbait. Many people using clickbait titles because they think that they will get more visitors to their thread in this way. Yes, clickbait helps, but it also have big big negative effect. If your title have nothing with content of post, most of readers just will close topic after reading OP without leaving their comments. Some people can even put you on ignore after reading such topic.

This poll come to my mind after reading your post :D :

But I agree with TryNinja. Stupid polls aren't big problem. When I see poll like this one, I just ignore it and don't vote.

Problem is sometimes this title you described as bad "- "I have a problem with the forum" is not bad at all. Take in consideration that newbie can't send a PM for example. He have no clue its called PM and he just have "a problem with the forum" and then he describe in long and best he can whats happening. He don't know this problem well enough to shorten it in topic title.
I know we would all want perfect users with perfect titles but we are humans only, we are making mistakes and we are not perfect :P

Title should be more as a subject of an email in which we are going to convey our message, and a good title can only be written if the content that we are going to present inside the message is completely known or at least known in a better way. If you are clear what you want to convey, then only you will be able to write a good title to catch everyone's eyes and make them click it and visit and take interest in the content inside. So, all I mean here is, if you want to convert viewers (of title) into visitors (of your thread) and want to engage in a much better way, you should be clear about what you want to speak and then choose a very good title that gives a brief idea of what people will find inside, whether it'll be interesting for them to visit or not.

Agree with you. Title should be related with the content otherwise its completely true that reader will lose their interest on that topic. Content and title should maintain a smooth connectivity with each other where readers will feel it necessary to spend their time.

Yes it's true, I experienced this already. I open ths thread because of it's title but after redirected to the poster's thread and I read the poster's post asking questions while the thread title is not what it supposed to be. I also did find a thread that the title looks interesting but the content is not what it should be.

Basically a good title can increase readers intention to read your post. you can't expect good response from a thread where title didn't match with your post content. In my opinion title is like a mirror of a post where its bear total thread description in small words.

Sometimes a good post didn't get well response from readers due to weak title. So I think its really important to put attention on title during making a thread.

It's a complete turn off for me if the title is unrelated to the topic. I just ignore the topic after clicking on it and seeing that the content does not match according to what is stated in the title.

To me a title should be a short summary of the content of the topic. Certain users are so annoying with the click bait tricks when trying to share their bogus links. the titles are always offtopic.

Topics here are becoming to complex and bureaucratic.

Your topic title should be whatever you want. If you can't choose your one line title , well, how will you wrote your topic content?

Just avoid any title that is not informative and ambiguous and you are good to go.

I title says much about a post I believe the forum is large with constant post being made so in order to gain attention to your post you ought to put more detailed regards to your title for it to catch the interest of others

The topic must be specific and interested to what the readers caught their attention and must also contain information which the users that may interested will have enough knowledge to understand from what they wanted to learn.

You topic should stay original and true to the content of what you are passing to the forum.
A redundant title to a post most times get ignored by readers

Actually I did not understand your topic title too.
You give the tittle a "?" but you are giving suggestion in topic. Do you think that you are able to put a correct title?

I don't know mate which part of my title looks unusual to you. By this title I tried my best to put readers attention and let them know again about our forums admin guideline about making a topic title. I hope we got a lot of valuable suggestion from others about this matter on this thread. Perhaps still there could be missing part on my topic and its true that everyone is nothing but a learner. In every moment we got chances to learn. Appreciate your nice comment which will influence me to make my topic title much better in future.

Every topic title has it's meaning and message it's passing. Whether long or short, people wants to know whats the topic is all about for better understanding of what the topic is all about. Your storyline is where people are after, to read and draw their conclusion from.

It's worthy to notice important components when someone compose their topic title:
- Key words: choosing relevant key words to express correctly and enough ideas you want to show off. Good key words will help threads better catching attention of readers. Someone write topic titles that look vague and very difficult to catch what they are talking about if simply looking at topic title and not read OP's contents
- Capitalization: should be normal, and avoid arbitrarily capitalizing on every words in topic title. This point looks unimportant, but in fact it brings convenient and comfortable feelings to readers; so it has significant importance.

I feel the Topic title should be relevant to the discussion they are doing. I have seen few posts whose topic is different and the discussion will be different. The Title and the description should match. Also, if the title is Unique and different, then users will be attracted by the title to read that topic.
