when such gaints can run into a problem, what makes you think they can't be shut down ?

Just right now I am experiencing a problem with my facebook account. I cannot make posts and when I checked the reason why, FB said they are making a maintenance check up on my account. Its been more than 3 hours already and still not ok till now. Well, bitcoin may not be as strong as it used to a year ago in value but still kicking, surviving and believed to be returning back in its height soon.

Well, that's the power of a distributed network over a centralized (albeit horizontally scaled) web service.
But to be fair, Bitcoin is just as reliant on Bitmain as Facebook are on their servers, we're lucky that there's been no disaster with the monopoly of mining.

I beg to differ. Bitmain may have the majority of the hashing power of the whole network, but the fact remains that there are still numerous miners doing their part diligently, alongside other nodes so yeah. Bitcoin is not so reliant on Bitmain nor any other mining companies as the network is designed to adjust depending on network conditions.

On the other hand, this happens every once in a while on Facebook's data centers for routine maintenance or any other reason, as was to be expected on centralized servers.

Bitcoin has a server, all the Bitcoin miners, which will just about never go down. Companies like Facebook and Google are more likely to go down since they are centralized.

I had experienced the same problem loading the website, so I thought my network was bad, had to be forced to abandon some of my tasks, You really can't compare the technology of bitcoin with that of Facebook.Even facebook CEO had to assemble some team of expert to study blockchain technology, to possibly see how it can improve his business scope. As I write, my facebook still experiencing some technical issues, maybe they are not done with the maintenance.

The Bitcoin network has been functional for 99.99999 % not 100%. There was a bug that was fix-it by satoshi. But most people consider this event as a downtime.

Some people consider the "Accidental Hardfork" (http://vincesamios.com/bitcoins/accidental-hardfork-the-resilience-of-a-fledgling-bitcoin) downtime too.

Not just that, every account or mostly game accounts connected on FB cannot be log in due to FB error.

Firstly, these listed companies are not in competition with bitcoin. And they also have far more users using them, this is not a good metric with which to gauge the progress bitcoin has made. It's better to compare it with other means of transacting, like PayPal

Bigger tech companies like Facebook have datacentres all over the world, sometimes some of those centers will be facing some difficulties, that was what happened yesterday as I understand it. If facebook going to have their own cryptocurrency then they need to have 0% downtime, or as close as they can get to zero.

Really? But I don't have any problem to access Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. I can even chat with my family and my friends. I think that is not related to bitcoin and I believe that bitcoin will be strong forever. Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp are tools in the social media which we can use to communicate with the other. But bitcoin is different than that apps because bitcoin is one of the financial systems that will bring a better world for us.

bitcoin could run into problems too. what happens if the internet goes down? like after a bad natural disaster? or a zombie apocalypse? :P

someday we'll have p2p mesh networks and won't have to worry about the centralized internet infrastructure going down. but that's decades away....

It is very hard to understand what you are saying truely. I couldn't figure out what you said about social media. Comparing Whatsapp and Bitcoin didn't seem right to me.

But I have to say, you guys will still use FB/TW/INS and so on. Don't you know that the Giants are already focusing on the blockchain technology?

I think all systems need repairs and maintenance. so does all social media. I hope that bitcoin will be strong and will always run smoothly without any obstacles. bitcoin is the best.

And compare that to typical internet banking uptime; 2 outages in 10 years, and now up for 5 years and counting is an unbeatable record

Comparing bitcoin with social media platform like facebook, Instagram and whatsapp is not ideal. The social Media platforms serve different purposes while bitcoin is solving financial technology problem.

I noticed it on Instagram but I thought the problem was my phone.
In general, there is no perfect system but Bitcoin provides much better solutions than what the central companies offer.

I do agree with that bitcoin has no such problem (ie. Downtime) but if you remember the 2017 then you would realize that it is not without cons. In late 2017, Bitcoin transfer fees were sky high like $30 for transfers, that's crazy. Thankfully, it's solved now due to LN.

The market at present in comparison to its market by 2017 seems to be the down time, it is a cyclic process and bitcoin isn't an exception to it. Bitcoin network at times have experienced congestion with delay in transactions when large volume of transactions get stuck to the network. In such a way there is some issue with the server and that seems to be the reason for the downtime of FB, Insta and whatsapp which were the leading social media networks.

In this aspect, I think bitcoin can be better compared with banks as they are playing same role as financial payment system. Banks can go blank either because of system shut down for maintenance etc and they are centralized, thus can distraught certain activities but bitcoin isn't that way, it is decentralized and not affected.

Why are comparing these two things together I am not able to understand that? What you are worrying is social platform with the decentralized cryptocurrencies. If you want to compare with bitcoin you may choose the XRP or Tether that may at least sensible to compare mate.

These companies relay on profit with the share market trending but cryptocurrencies are bumping up with the demand and supply.

There is no development that is exceptional from facing technical problems, I wonder why some fork's always complain of any problem being faced by bitcoin and to even see Facebook attacking bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies make it even clearer that they don't understand what cryptocurrency is all about. Facebook WhatsApp and the rest should apologize for their misdeeds in blocking crypto ads on they platform.

The government will do everything to keep these platforms up because of all the data they receive in return.  Facebook isn't going to be shutdown, that privacy hearing was just a show for the general public.  Its difficult for anyone to even compete with facebook because they generally just get bought out.

also the pools like antpool are actually not managed by bitmain.
just check out the blocks solved by 'antpool'. you will notice a pattern of atleast half a dozen block reward addresses and each have their own settings
meaning its not one entity but half a dozen different entities of different management. where by some prefer 'empty blocks' some prefer to include segwit, some dont. which shows they are not managed by the same biased management.

also bitcoin do not manufacture the chips TSMC do.
so its worth researching more and script reading reddit FUD less

the pools are geolocated in half a dozen countries just for the ones tagged as "antpool", and managed by different people
at very best the analogy is that antpool is just a franchise licence brand owner. that allows franchisee's around the world to set up their own farm and get cheaper supplies by tagging their hashrate as antpool

Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp are social networking applications for communication and news or other, and bitcoin only requires an internet network to stay online.
so as long as the internet network exists or is connected all three have nothing to do with bitcoin.

This is just like a maintenance on big exchange so I think it will not ne shut down for good. But of course, bitcoin will live longer but it doesn’t mean that we will not encounter any problem, i guess what’s happening on facebook is normal since many companies wants to kill facebook but I know it will be back better.

Indeed, these three media have no direct connection with bitcoin. But, if there's no connection with bitcoin, then how do you market bitcoin to the public, because as far as I know Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp are the most active and effective media, especially in terms of marketing. So, their existence's certainly very influential on the development of other bitcoin and crypto.

I don't see any reason why you are comparing these social media platform to a blockchain currency project. The difference are clear. Moreover this same social media platform are own by the same person. Or tell me why is twitter not also down?. Bitcoin is strong we all know but these social media platforms are among the machines we be needing to make bitcoin more stronger by spreading it potentials to the mass.

the incident that happened some time ago has indeed been questioned about the quality of the company owned by the mark. bitcoin has been on a reliable network, maybe only the confirmation time has experienced a delay, but that can be avoided by using a fee for customs transactions.

There are huge differences between a social media platform to a digital currency. Don't compare those because it has a different function and users. Social media platforms are being down because of massive users in servers, there's a lot of big data in a platform so they're having maintenance to fix or allocate those data. At the time of social media down yesterday I did not at all think I had to compare it to bitcoin because it was clearly different and what you said was the reason, but there are still people who compare things like this that are clearly different social media platforms and blockchain technology which must be there are maintenance on every social media server like that and even this forum has also experienced server down like them. So, that is not something that can be compared to bitcoin.

You are right, bitcoin is very strong, except compared to all three, bitcoin is still losing in terms of people who know and use it and if people who know and use bitcoin are the same as FB, Instagram and WA, then bitcoin will be unparalleled and I hope it will happen The next 5-10 years

People should have topic to discuss even it is not related  ;D as long they support bitcoin, i will do it too and say bitcoin is strongest technology between all "what mentioned" by OP. But actually blockchain technology itself already strong, that is why a lot of aspects adopted it.

There were a glitches with the facebook and whatsapp but they were not down because we can still access them until now. Also, some reported errors such as they cannot access their photo albums and messenger  in facebook but just for a temporary. Anyway, bitcoin is still uncomparable with those. They have different preferences, no need to compare btc with those apps.

Bitcoin is different to those social media because it's centralize unlike to bitcoin that have server. So even many years we used bitcoin it will not crashed unlike to Facebook it always log and in the future it will failed if they can't manage it well. Socila media need improvement so it will not loggy.

Well, what happened in 2017 with the fees wasn't all that positive, so that could technically be seen as downtime as well. If you wasn't able to pay $30 in fees, you would have to wait over a day for your transaction to confirm.

Admittedly, Ethereum dealt with the same problems, but that doesn't change anything about the fundamental problem that comes with how severely limited decentralized networks are in terms of scalability.

The situation improved for Bitcoin, but still, with enough network congestion we'll be having the same problems. More people entering this space means more network congestion--we're only a bull run away from high fees.

Its questionable but I guess its normal since we also experience a server down sometimes just like what’s happening on some exchanges before where DDos are so active. Well, bitcoin is bitcoin its a good technology but we must also anticipate a problem like this that can occur in the future especially the market continues to grow.

I agree with others. Don't get the point of comparing bitcoin to Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp since they're different.
Other thing that makes them different is the three are centralized and sometimes it sucks especially when encountering such problems like what happened. But I dont think they'll just shut down that easy since they're big and lot of people are using it. During the time, there's a problem with the said apps, some people just went to twitter.
But yeah, long live for bitcoin!

Although I see where you are going with this an attempted bump, doubt the price will go up based on social medias being down.
Just as these social medias has been down, Bitcoin transaction fees can skyrocket up to prices not worth of doing the transactions.
So granted Bitcoin is alive and well but myself any many others dont send Bitcoin unless the transaction price is low

Well yes, just a little issue but might already been fixed by the owner,  on the other hand Bitcoin still making it's way trying to recover a little and make some good run, the industry still yet to explode and the expected bull isn't around yet, still have time to buy and store while waiting for the next ride.

Bitcoin indeed might have 100% or 99.9999 uptime, but it doesn't close the possibility the network has a problem. Just remember the last year Bitcoin transactions fees are tremendously rising, and the network are clogged up. An uptime doesn't indicate the underlying technologies are working thoroughly and flawlessly. I mean Bitcoin is a brand new revolutionary technology, it needs time to be continuously developed.

I do not understand why you are comparing bitcoin to this social network. At the moment bitcoin has not yet been legalized in all parts of the world and has thousands of people who still do not use bitcoin, so losing time comparing with social networks is not something productive

Guys come on, this was just a maintenance according to them. It's not the first time this happened. Actually nice those apps went down for a while so people can look up from their phones.

This got me thinking though if blockchain is suitable for a social media platform.

Facebook, instagram or any other social media platform being down has nothing to do with bitcoin and it's prices.

I really can't see hoe Facebook and Instagram are connected to Bitcoin in this particular case. The fact that these networks were down has nothing to do with Bitcoin and its value, so why mixing the facts and making the confusion. That is how the fake news appear.

Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp are mainly connected to the main server, which leads these services towards centralization, But while considering Bitcoin technology and platform it gives completely innovative solutions.

Bitcoin is completely standalone from other third-party services, rather it's an invention.

Bitcoins is purely based on the peer-to-peer network which is connected to the nearest node to get the latest updated data copy, which verified and securely stored by other nodes. These nodes are independent entities which carry whole data of blockchain within themselves.

I have not faced any problem using Facebook or whatsapp but many users faced problems on fb, insta and whatsapp.
I am not very familiar with facebook and insta maybe that's why i haven't feel any issue in these social platforms.
Yeah Bitcoin getting more stronger day by day and very soon Facebook will adopt blockchain.    

In as much as I want to believe the blockchain tech has come to stay I want to disagree that Bitcoin is 100% hassle free. Just like programming, every invention has its teething problems once in a while. Bitcoin experienced its hiccups in 2017-2018 when the network got clogged up and there were logs of transactions unattended to and mining fees were hiked up. How could anyone ever forget those crazy days of Bitcoin.

Centralized services normally have a weakness, namely a single point of failure. Bitcoin is a decentralized network with no single point to fail, so you can cut off on node or several thousand nodes and Bitcoin transactions will still be possible. <Like the P2P Torrent networks>

Redundancy are also introduced in the form of satilite networks <Core> and radio for Bitcoin transfers, if the Internet are blocked or firewalled in some countries. Centralized networks like Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp are reliant of centralized service providers for acces.  :P

One of the major reasons for their possible shutdown is their continuous Data breach where they share our data with other giant companies to get paid for the same. Have you read their privacy policy? If yes, tell me are they allowed to do so. On other hand, BTC is pseudonymous and consists all those properties to help you undergo all your finances with ease. Albeit, BTC is a different subject and comes under a category which really can't be compared to social networks as they are about making friends and sharing data, but yeah BTC can also be said to be doing data sharing only through electronic medium but in terms of numbers only but everything under the hood (anonymity). IMHO, I believe these social networks are just a way to make money for the bosses who created them, but the one I use the most is telegram, very clean, sober and easy to use as well as crypto and anonymity-friendly. It's easy to create bots to pay and get paid in crypto over telegram - a facility everyone wanted so far.

From what I heard they were testing some new algos that are supposed to implement acta rules. They are trying to block free speech, content sharing, and the spread of information. Acta is internet censorship and it will lead to most youtube content creators disappearing for good. Only decentralized platforms will survive.

Whatever. That still doesn't have anything to do with cryptocurrencies at all. And i don't think we can assume that bitcoin is as strong as ever lol. It's been quite shaky the past year for btc and though we probably held on and is now becoming more steady, we're still far from being considered as that strong yet.

Social networking platforms developed over the years such as Facebook and Twitter can always live forever. It can change owner, but I believe it will live in tandem with Bitcoin.

These social networking platforms have made a big change on the world connecting the people. Now bitcoin through its technology backing will make a big change in the entire global transaction process. At present the community is in need of social networking, same will happen with the cryptocurrency as well.

..the last time i access my fb account,,it says that someone has loggin to my accounts unwantedly and it needs some confirmation inorder to regain access on it,,then it directed me to a form just to changed my old password,,then after successful confirmation,,I gained access to my account again..maybe facebook have its maintenance in order to protect its users from hackers..by this,,we cannot say that it will last longer without its programmer to maintain the standard process of facebook..

I did not wonder why bitcoin is stonger rather than big company like facebook,instagram etc because bitcoin is we can use in our daily transactions to make our everyday life convenient. And aside from that  bitcoin can use as an investment that you can get an extra income unlike in the social media you only see photo uploaded and other issue without any income.

And why exactly are you comparing this kind of companies like Facebook or Instagram with Bitcoin when they have nothing in common? Bitcoin is not a company, it is not lead by a person who seeks to be profitable at the end of the day so it does not compete with any of the companies you listed. Yes, it has no effects at all because its not crypto related not unless facebook already lunch their own coin. There's a big difference between the decentralize and the centralize platforms and the decentralize platform seems to be more giant than than the centralize. Yeah. This is because facebook, instagram and whatsapp uses a central database and is prone to single point of failure. If their central point fails, the whole network collapses unfortunately. But that's not the case of bitcoin network since several nodes act as a backup point. If one of the nodes fail, there are still other nodes that can hold on the network.

I have never hard that bitcoin network went offline before 24 hours always available providing services to it millions of user on the blockchain, even when some other giant institutions like social media go down bitcoin still remains available. I think the only cooperation that can compet with bitcoin in availability is Google.

no it may not because those coins or any other similar coins that are created by corporations are centralized so they don't even fall under the same category as bitcoin. they don't offer you any kind of freedom or privacy and they will instead impose a lot of restrictions and snoop into your financial affairs not to mention they control your money so they are competing with things such as Paypal not bitcoin. and if anything should be threatened is Paypal and similar services.

i'm pretty sure issue that occurred a year or so ago where bitcoin was having tons of confirmation issues could be equated to facebook going down.
facebook depends on up-time so that users can be online and see the ads being pushed towards them, and bitcoin depends on fast, inexpensive network confirmations for people to maintain faith in bitcoin as a reputable payment system

Indeed it must be admitted that there are different segments for bitcoin and facebook etc., even though there is a disruption to them it is clear that bitcoin will continue to run even though there is no direct impact, but only the absence of clearer information, but bitcoin has a place of information reliable. bitcoin will remain up and running because bitcoin is a reliable investment.

bitcoin is way harder to "shut down" if not almost impossible
it is decentralised and it only depends on internet to be able to function without any problems even if some ountries would restrict or ban it
centralised companies like facebook or apps like instagram or whatsap are heavily dependant on too many factors to be considered safe from being taken down if neeeded
even google or facebook face huge fines and constant court cases etc.

Yeah since long we are watching facebook twitter and other social medias but the best social media which is working along with bitcoin is facebook for sure but recently I have heard about what’s app as well, that what’s app is also now working with bitcoin for promotion and development. So it is a sign that bitcoin will live forever.

In fact, it's a lot more likely that they will buy the competition than anything else. When the CEO and partners see themselves on the edge of a fierce competition with them and they get offered a lot of money(The one that really get to be considered a threat) then they will most likely sell and live comfortably.

Well people should have fled to p2p alternatives, such as Diaspora (https://diasporafoundation.org/). I dislike Facebook and the like. Not only you should go p2p, but secure and obfuscated p2p, such as Diaspora thru Tor or something similar.

Living in a country that blocks thousands of sites for having opposition views, i have come to realize the importance it is to strengthen these initiatives. Do not ignore them because in your freedom you don't seem to need them. This is like people ignoring Bitcoin because their fiat is so great (ie. USD o EUR). But by the time a fiat goes the inflationary spiral it is too late to react, you won't see it coming, trust me, a million yearly inflation last year but it might reach 10 million or more this year, should "socialists" remain in power that is.

One thing i dislike from Signal is that it is too much a clone of Whatsapp, and i consider whatsapp design abominable. If anything, i'd rater have a Telegram open source p2p clone.

In my opinion just like Facebook there is no problem as similar to bitcoin, because both is become more popular in all countries. Especially now btc is much familiar because of its very useful currency in payments and for investment. so bitcoin is stronger to them.

So how can we compare the significances

It's hard to compare social media apps to bitcoin which is a decentralized currency. However, we could see through it that bitcoin has been through a lot. I could drop down but due to its volatility, it could still rise beyond our expectations. Unlike social media, bitcoin involves money and that's what makes it stronger.

You need the network to exchange your bitcoins between wallets and eventually get some real world fiat (money). Else why would you even want bitcoins or any other crypto currency right? ;)

its not hard but it is inapropriate to compare social media with bitcoin  .  it does not totally make sense because what is the connection of social media to bitcoin ?  bitcoin itself is a crypto  currency  ( a currency and an asset ) while social medias such as fb , twitter and i.g are only a  website   .  however all of them are all online   .  all of them are strong and popular   . i bet that was the reason why the op itself did start somparing them to each other  .

by looking at its advantage. What if internet will shut down? which I never heard happen yet, bitcoin is running through internet and it's called an internet money.
