Title: Cryptocurrency Market Capitalization
Post by: Annalise24 on March 18, 2019, 05:43:55 PM
It is estimated that that the Cryptocurrency market capitalization went down to $200 billion from $800 billion that it was as at January 2018.
I believed it was due to the bearish market .
What I do not understand is while there is continuous growth of Cryptocurrency, people are picking interest and coming into the cryptosphere and yet the market capitalization is still not moving upwards.
What could be the challenge here?

You should not misinterpret the concept of the "market capitalization". This is simply the number of current price x number of coins for a given coin and it does not represent any "true value" or "money in the market".

Prices in the crypto world are mainly driven by speculation, there is no true value for 99% of the coins. (Maybe some stablecoins or share-like tokens are backed by something)
And because of that the "market capitalization" can take almost any value. Much lower ones in a continuing bear market but also much higher ones if the bull is coming back.

I think the main "challenge" is market cycles not less not more. We all know that after a great growth always comes significant drop as a correction. And vice versa. So now after a long decrease of bearish market it is ready for the pump again. And we can see this by the increased volume of trade. It indicates that the start of growth is so close that we should be ready for it each and every moment. I think that this year we will witness some great pumps following by the strong bull run in 2020.

The market capital is the amount of all coin funds in general while every coin in the cryptocurrency market capital has its own share base on the number of the coin and the current price which change every seconds base on the demand and supply rate.

Concerning the drop in the amount is base on the current market which is bearish in nature as every coin reached high level and now in correction mode which has to drop in price and in the process also gaining momentum to move higher to what it was before when the bull season return which will also gives cryptocurrency market capital a higher amount to that of $800b you mentioned and that is certain in near future.

If we recall the last bull season we saw staggering growth of market volume from 80 billion to over 800 billion in few months and i think the next bull season will not be much different as i assume we will go from 200 billion volume to 2000 billion volume and more  in next bull run if the market history repeats and exponential bulls keep moving the market.

Our biggest challenge is to save the coins that we have until the market rises, there is still a lot of sales panic in every market so I think many investors avoid large purchases, market volumes improve but not yet fully trusted, history may be repeated but everyone still doubts

In the case of a bull market, it is overbought (bubble), and bearish is oversold. I think this is due to the low liquidity of the market. Someday the market will become more liquid and less volatile, and prices on average will be closer to the fundamental ones. Thus, there will be no topics like this.

The capitalization of the crypto-currency market is at the bottom, and for a long time, imagine that the market was already 860 billion dollars, and now only about 130 billion, plus or minus 10 billion, so of course everyone is waiting for the capitalization to break into the old figure and even become more, all this is waiting

Firstly, the market capitalization should not concern you much as an investor, it is not a relevant factor and just a way of aggregating the total amount in circulation in fiat currencies.
In smaller currencies it can be easily blown up by a few transactions.
Market cap is the product of the tradng volume and the price

The challenge here is on how long you're willing to wait until the next bull run triggers. Whales can't let an opportunity pass if there's a big money involve on it. With each of their trades, it costs and makes them a lot of money so that's why when the market moves up a bit, there will be a following dump.

Market cap is the sum of all prices and cap will increase when prices bloom. Most people can invest money, investors may increase. But, if there is no increase in price, then those who leave, are as high as newcomers.

The capitalization figures that are presented to us do not reflect the true state of the market, in my opinion. Now and then slips information about transactions in addition to exchanges. So we have to wait for this to come out. And the cryptocurrency market will become legal. In many countries it is still banned.

I think you need to check the market capitalization again and actually see that the it has been increasing lately unlike the massive decrease we saw last years. The truth is that a lot of persons made a lot of profit due to the 2017 growth we experienced and they where all taking out profit in 2018 that's why the market capitalization fell drastically.

Though, market capitalization don't really determine the price of the coins on exchange because it is gotten based on the law of demand and supply according to economists.

You are referring to the entire crypto marketcap, you won't get an accurate data with that.
It will be more accurate if you only include those legitimate coins that are performing in the past and in the present.

The entire marketcap is down now because shitcoins are slowly getting worthless, and the next time it will grow, we can expect
that it's because of the legit coins. Don't look at the marketcap too much, just look on a certain coins you invested and plan to invest then follow them.
Price is a good factor to determine it's performance.

Simple mathematics from your observation above show that Total Market Cap is only at 25% of the highest value. So you can see,,, most altcoins are worse than 25% of their ATH. This means that if you only use market cap, then coins that are 25% or more of their ATH are very strong. Bitcoin would not meet that criteria but almost does,,, for me another proof that market cap is not a good indicator. Do not use it to measure growth of crypto.

Crypto might be picking interest as of late, but it is does't mean that we are going to see another increase similar to 2017.  Perhaps (big) investors confidence are not there yet and they wanted to see a good price increase, maybe in the $6000-$6500 price range before we can see them going back to the ecosystem again to push the price to the next level.

And as others have said, market cap is not a good indicator as well, because shitcoins are just being pump-and-dump. Someone can created a coin and put billions of supply, so it's misleading.

The market capitalization also keeps increasing when the price increase and if there are some coins gets delisted on exchange then it will get decreased and there are many coins won't recover if the price of bitcoin increase even.

There was a lot of investment from the outside of the crypto market and crypto can't growth a lot without using a lot of money from there. I think you are wrong in this case because basically crypto needs more and more money from outside of the market to pump its price.

I believed it was due to the bearish market .
wrong.
it was because of two things combined: 1. dumps 2. the shitcoins having huge supplies.
when a shitcoin has 1 million coin and gets dumped $1 it loses $1 million market cap but when that shitcoin has 100 billion coins and loses $1 it is losing $1 billion market cap. that is why the total market cap went up to a fake value in first place during the shitcoin pump of 2017.

Quote
What I do not understand is while there is continuous growth of Cryptocurrency, people are picking interest and coming into the cryptosphere and yet the market capitalization is still not moving upwards.
because people are NOT coming in altcoins anymore. in fact they have been existing as the altcoins started dumping on them hard.

Quote
What could be the challenge here?
the challenge is having good projects that are real and are created to work as an actual cryptocurrency not just some pump and dump that rises for a short time before it gets dumped on anybody bag holding it.

It is not that simple to gain back a huge losses. So the cryptocurrency still moving steadily. The last bull season show us how volatile this market can be. But remember this is a tech business which the higher the firm produces some useful ICO with great use case favored by investors and also include that a legit one.

The challenge is the mass adoption. You do not need to forget that all major crypto currencies have lost around 95 percent of their value and this strongly depends on the market capitalisation. As soon as market will recover, capitalisation will raise strongly.

the cryptocurrency total market capitalization doesn't matter even a little bit! it will continue to rise though but that will only be because creating a new coin is extremely easy specially when all it takes is a copy paste of some code that is already out there and open for usage for free!

what we really need is one or two coins that start like bitcoin, without premine and decentralized so that we can see this market grow for real instead of being pumped and dumped all the time.

I see a problem here in that trust in cryptocurrencies is undermined by the actions of fraudulent projects. Major players are in no hurry to return to the market.
Also, institutional investors cannot start the game now, as there is still no legal regulation in the field of cryptocurrency.

The current market capitalization is based predominantly on what consumers perceive cryptocurrency to be worth because the market is still driven primarily by retail investors, although a growing percentage of the volume is being traded by institution based funds and investment products, add to this the recent bubble factor and you'll find the market is oversold but that doesn't mean it won't appreciate once again as adoption increases and sentiment improves

The challenge is the cryptocurrency adoption worldwide. It is not enough that we, few people are just the only on know how to utilize crypto. What we need to do is to spread the good news to our friends and let them figure out cryptocurrency. Other ways is when government opens up projects for cryptocurrency adoption.

The market capitalization has remained down for a long while because the coins prices which is a main factor of the market cap have refused to move up. Take for instance BTC which holds over 55% of the entire market cap fell from $20,000 in December 2017 to $4,000 currently.

There are good signs that the crypto market will grow. We also look at the BTC price, which has risen above $ 4,000. You are right when you say that market share has dropped from $ 800 billion to $ 200 billion, but on the crypto market, prices are rising and falling on speculation. The fact that the crypto market is more promoted than in the past years is a good thing, but that does not mean that market capital will grow. Speaking of speculation, I think some powerful people are influencing small investors through false news and erroneous information so they can withdraw their investments from the market. Unfortunately, the mirage of rapid profits on the crypto market, bring investors that prove to be scared.

You have not made a wrong choice with your decision which some believes is the best for now, though it still has a way of affecting the growth of market too, because activities of traders most times are the ones causing the volatility we are experiencing here and there by buying and selling often in the market, and what will really make us see a tangible increase and stability in price is when we use it as store for value, we have to keep holding it which you have been doing I believe.

Total crypto marketcap had come down to near $100  billion in December 2018 and now it is near $141 billion.
That is due to the increase in circulating supply. This is the reason, I mostly do not consider marketcap as a valid criteria for evaluating the future of a coin. It may not produce accurate information due to various manipulations.

It is still quite low compared to what was quoted in January 2018 and the gap difference is quite much. This show that we still have a very long way to go in market recovering, we just need lots of big institution that will believe in the stem to come in and pump in their money and more so, we need to start making use of the already stable coins like Bitcoin as store value because I don’t really trust most of those smaller projects that comes in form of altcoins.

The only way the market can really and fully recover is for many investors to invest in Bitcoin that already has the highest market capitalization and trade volume.

it is a common misunderstanding to think "bots" are manipulating the market. whereas you should only think of bots as automatic order executing scripts which are doing the same exact thing as a human would do but do it faster.
manipulation is done when some whale pumps some shitcoin not when bots execute a lot of orders.

More and more robust steps will be taken. The developments around us, the expansion of adoption will help price to increase. Only after a little more time has passed, we will see what will happen.

The most important problem is whales. They're preventing the market from moving up. In addition, the market of binance and bitrex knowingly prevent the market from reviving. When a little rise begins, sales start immediately. These problems will continue as long as the whales do not withdraw from the market.

Market capitalization is still crowded even though it is relatively low, it is necessary to take steps to add it. Various efforts to be able to run smoothly and well will require a long time, all elements must indeed be able to increase investor confidence for the future and learn for recovery.
we can't grow it alone unless you are a big investor but the chances are small, I know that the market is always moving but the market also needs great support to grow its value back and at least public support too. but unfortunately it hasn't been seen yet. while the pope has not yet emerged and the public is more sensitive to crypto problems. this is so bad.

maybe because market capitalization is supposed to be like now, so there is no word of decline because the market should be like this, when bullrun occurs and market capitalization increases it is a bonus
let's go back to the past when the price of bitcoin and other coins was still cheap, initially bitcoin and coin were indeed cheap coins and therefore there was actually no decline in market capitalization, the market only increased and we were used to it when the market not increasing We tend to call it a decline, even many people say that the market will die

Market capitalisation depends on the price and the total supply of each coin and as we all know there are some projects that can manipulate these factors, because the key players have a big amount of coins that they can burn, sell or buy.

I am inclined to believe that the market has become shady, the main volume of trading takes place on the over-the-counter market, therefore real volumes are not taken into account and prices are not rising. Someone very rich accumulates leading cryptocurrencies.

Cryopto is a speculative market and capitalization is just a number. It represents the number of all coins on the market multiplied by their price. So, if there is demand for the coins and investors willing to pay higher price the market cap will increase and the opposite way works the same.

Market Cap is the sum of the total supply of coins. I know that at that time the price of Bitcoin and Altcoin was 4 times more expensive than now. So it's no wonder Market Cap can reach 800 billion dollars. And being able to go down to 200 billion dollars is a natural thing for old players.

A lot of people joined the crypto ecosystem in the early 2018 because they saw the opportunity of tripling their money just by either investing in Bitcoin or Ethereum. This caused the cryptocurrency market capitalization to increased but the decline in the capitalization started when these people realized that their assumptions of the crypto ecosystem is not the same as the real transactions made on the crypto market. This caused such people to exist the crypto ecosystem because they were losing their money.

Yeah because now every challenger, investor and trader in the crypto world is very knowledgeable to manage their remaining balance in bitcoin. When the market is downfall then the bitcoin value and price will also down and if the market will high also the bitcoin will high. Now in our crypto world we need to be strategic on what you have because if you fail your investment will lose. We need to monitor the market price to earn more profit when it comes to bitcoin community. A knowledgeable and strategic investor will be the one who will reach his/her goal.

The challenge would be the rumors of manipulation. Others are very sure that there is a manipulation, I don't have proofs to show so I'd like to remain and say that it's still a rumor for me. Crypto market is pure speculative market and this is the reason why investors like you are very curious on how the market moves until now. Even me, though I'm in here for few years I can say that the market is very unpredictable as usual and we just can't be confident with what we say.

Basically the crypto market After reaching its peak, everything about prices will go down, almost the same as Bitcoin.
this is very influential on the project of conducting an ICO, so it is a bit difficult to guess the crypto market with selling coins can put pressure on those prices for traders and hodlers, so that it can cause market prices to fall further, more on demand than on offer.

Most statistics that you have seen in some exchanges are fake and you shouldn't believe it when you just saw it. You should have to do your own research too but choose the legit one because sometimes it creates confusion if you get to know the wrong information. If we have seen some movements in the market then it is just due to the traders and some investors joining in.

Perhaps you do not quite understand what market capitalization is. For market capitalization is considered to be the cost of one coin multiplied by the number of coins that are available at a given time. In other words, it does not give us an idea of the true value of coins and their current value is dictated by speculation.

As my personal interpretation CoinmarketCap is just base on the current trading price on a particular coin/token in the circulation and not reflect the platforms true worth and value as a company thats why its not the basis of the platforms worth! The most important is the fuction/services or the product that the company has given to us, But for those people who after with pure profits coin/token price has meant a lot. Like me i used to participate in some ICO's my sole purpose is just the profits thats why its mean lot for me too .

Tripling? I think people were thinking more like x10 or even x100!

And no, I do not think this specifically caused market cap to increase. If you look at trading volumes after the top 50 you see that some tokens in fact had so little volume. Remember Bitconnect also? and Ripple even? or USDT? These were inflated in price, and then also they were releasing new tokens all the time into circulation,,, and at the same time ICOs were listing, this was what was making the market cap fat.

Doesn't matter what the current market capitalization is. In fact we shouldn't even worry about it. The capitalization will itself start to increase slowly as more people starts to use and adopt crypto currencies. It is bound to happen as more people gets involved into the crypto market.  As more people will demand for those limited supply of coins, the price of the coins will start to rise eventually. This in turn will cause the market capitalization to uproar!

Market capitalization reduction was due to so many factors. Imagine the market cap that we had in late 2017, compared to what is available at the moment. A lot of people got FOMOed in 2017 and that tend has now reduced. So people are being careful of being victims of that now and that has contributed into lesser investment and consciousness of price, which invariably translates to low market cap.

Cryptocurrency is a digital currency created and managed using advanced encryption techniques in the form of secret code codes called cryptography. This concept was developed as an exchange of information and online finance. The use of code claims to make currency crytocurrency that cannot be falsified due to sophisticated security codes.
The development of cryptocurrency began with academic concepts and then as time emerged Bitcoin, one of the digital currencies in 2009. Bitcoin's growth attracted attention year after year and in April 2013 it peaked at a record $ 266 per bitcoin.

Market capitalization is not just about the volume, its also about the price you put on coins. Which means you could have billions of dollars trading everyday and still have low market cap versus have just couple million trading everyday but have higher marketcap.

We could reach to 30 thousand dollars per bitcoin and all altcoins could go up and after prices are there the sellers and buyers could go away, that means if there are not enough sellers than price can't go down, in order for price to go down there needs to be sellers but if volume goes down who is going to sell their coins? No one, that is why the volume is not the important part, the price is what decides the market cap.

We had a year where even volume went down but now we are seeing that volume go up, the important thing is will we see price increase as well?

If at least half of all promising projects start working at least for minimal Nex forces, this will definitely attract users of the products provided by these companies. Crypto is a speculative market and the total market depends on how much coins  are investors willing to buy
or sell . This market is unpredictable and can be manipulated as it is still a small market. Prices does not always
represent the value and it can happen that many good things happen in crypto world but it is not validated
on the market properly, but the opposite can happen as well when we have an overrated market during a hype ( bubble ).

What is called as market capitalization is totally depends on two main components:
- The free money that people are readily to invest into market at different period. It means when people don't have free money to invest or they see other places are safer to store or invest their money, total flow and amount of capital for market will drop.
- The expectation of investors: when their expectations are high, their feelings are positive, the 'capitalization' will be high, too.
In crypto, it depends on the third component, bitcoin.  :D

In my perspective, the market capitalization of crypto currency should be replaced with market value of crypto currency. For a very long period of years, more than ten years, crypto market affected significantly by bitcoin changes, both bitcoin's ups and downs. So, using the term market capitalization might lead to misunderstanding on the way to assess value of crypto companies. I think the term market values will represent better for values of crypto companies. Maybe the two terms are not too much different in narrow perspective, but in wider one, it makes sense.

when institutional investors enter the market we will see more cryptocurrency market capitalization. Bitcoin prices is directly proportional to market cap
Yes, we really need these institutional investors to really come in at large and invest or enforce a product that will make their users troop into using cryptocurrency, we really need large investor because buying half, one or two btc by few investor we get daily will really not make the market grow very fast.

The market was actually growing slowly, just that the OP didn’t see a massive change in the capitalization based on the amount of investment being done, if recently, someone claim that it took like 20 billion dollars for bitcoin to gain 1000 usd increase which is quite not a small money, then we will be needing up to 100 billion dollars to gain 5000 usd, this must really be made possible by institutions.

What is happening now. Trade continues to increase now. the market is starting to improve, I'm sure this is the best way to make large capital from new investors enter the crypto market. when capital comes in, the market will get large funds and move up.
Why did you decide that the market is growing? bitcoin grew only 800 dollars and it grew only because of one purchase for 100 million dollars

I heard from the news that the capitalization of cryptocurrency has been increasing so far that is the good news from that the cryptocurrency is very much popular and many years to come i think another billions of capitalization it may push in the market.
What you read is the truth, ever since Bitcoin moved from Bear Lane to bull lane early this month, the market capitalization has been tremendously growing, I think as at 5th of this month, the total  market cap experienced an total growth of about $20 billion, which is quite impressive despite the fact that, the institutions we are expecting to join the cryptocurrency world are still yet to fully join as they are still in the preparation time.

So, by the time most of these institutions joins too this year, we should expected a bigger growth in the market capitalization that will push most coin values, especially that of Bitcoin to the moon.

There are still too many of those who invest not knowing what to do next and when the rates fall they run and sell everything they have as they're afraid of losing money.
And the good thing is that governments started to accept Bitcoin (https://coinswitch.co/)that helps it to grow - that's the right decision.

Looking at what the OP stated, the present market cap has gone below the lowest he stated, which means that there has not been much improvement.
With time, we might see a  better growth, perhaps when we are much closer to the big news expected in the crypto sphere.

some improvements did occur but nothing surprised me but it was quite good compared to last year and if this continues then I'm also sure if crypto will grow further in the future.

You can get this information following the CoinMarketCap news. It is updated every minute if not more frequent. Of course, if the market capitalization grows, the cryptocurrencies will be more stable.

That is true. However, market capitalization is not growing so fast. In comparison with 2017, it is pretty low. Unfortunately, too many good investors decided to leave the market during the bloodbath.

they will return if there is good news that will later attract them. growth does look slow, but if there is a pump once again, I'm sure there will be a big investment into the crypto market and that will make bulls really come.

Many challenge in cryptomarket. Beside regulation on market, there is many scam ICOs. Market capitalization will recover again but i think its depend on crypto community, if the challenge solved, i am believe market confident and the price will recover to peak again

Crypto market capitalization can't be compared to.. say equity market capitalization. With crypto, the stats are much more vague. For example while talking about a particular crypto, we don't know how much of that currency is in free-float and how much is in reserves. There are cryptos out there, with less than 10% of the circulation in free-float. For such coins, the market capitalization may be heavily exaggerated.

Market capitalization will not increase easily now, only bitcoin is doing well so far, other altcoins are falling.
Compared to the past, or the time where bull run happened, there are a lot of altcoins that pump and they were added to the marketcap
since we are talking of the entire marketcap here.

When the bear market came in, bitcoin dump and most altcoins dump lower, they dump more than 10 times of the price so their marketcap
has significantly decrease. With the bear, it resulted to some of the altcoins that slowly become worthless.

The marketcap in 2017 was rising due the hype of cryptocurrency, thats why it went down in 2018 after the hype.
market capitalization is moving upward in 2019, just not fast like in 2017. Maybe it is because there were many bad projects in 2018.

CMC does not reflect  a real value as the crypto assets are not backed  with the exception of stable coins. CMC market capitalization
represents the circulating number of tokens multiplied with their current price.

Now the market conditions for cryptocurrency are difficult to predict sometimes going up and down, and now people mostly sell their coins even though the results are not optimal because they are worried that the crypto condition will deteriorate, if we are patient we will wait for the market to rise so we will get maximum results from coins we sell, we must remain optimistic that market conditions are not always decreasing

From my point of view, the very idea of capitalization as a whole is a very abstract understanding of the situation, because I see that there are opportunities to simply not use it. Since at the slightest dynamics in a greater or lesser side, I think this indicator will be very sensitive.

You are right, of which some of these people that are yet to come in are looking for a cleared coast for them to penetrate the market, they are gradually testing the market to see how it will respond, which could be the reason why we have been seeing lots of increase in the price of BTC recently.

They are basically still withdrawing from pumping huge money so that everyone will not speedily sump their coins which may not be too good for them, one of the major reason why many people in this forum as I believe that the turn BTC growth will take this year will be a slow one but will eventually meet up to the target.

I feel we are in the arena in the sense that we are not focused on one project but several others too. one of them, including investors, they certainly want to benefit from several projects and developers also care about their work maps and some don't. so if it's only for one project, it's hard to grow its value unless one of them dares to make a big change so that a new project or coin can have high selling points on the exchange.

This is what I look into whenever I want to switch between investing in either bitcoin or altcoins.

I fully agree with you, because if we take 2016 into account, it is the real popularization of cryptocurrency due to the global informativity of society that led to an active increase in cryptocurrency prices at the end of 2016 and an active rise throughout 2017.  A lot of people were interested in cryptocurrency and therefore investments increased.

It is very difficult to assess the capitalization of the cryptocurrency market as a whole. This is due to the fact that this market is completely new and innovative.
I think that the complexity of everything is still in the fact that there are already existing cryptocurrencies that are traded on exchanges and here you can find the Kiss tool that is invested in these coins.  Thus their capitalization is determined.  But meanwhile, new projects also receive quite a lot of investment in Fiat, but they are not exactly reflected in the capitalization of these projects.  Based on this, in my opinion, it is very difficult to figure out the full capitalization of the entire cryptocurrency market.

Prices of the cryptocurrencies and their market capitalization are for the most part determined by theory, there is no obvious incentive for 99% of the coins.

Some stablecoins and tokens are supported by sometimes genuine assets like cash, gold etc.
What's more, due to that the "market capitalization" can take practically any value depending on the company providing it.
This easily influence the project's and total market cap
Much lower ones out of a proceeding with bear showcase yet additionally a lot higher ones if the bull is returning.
