Title: Would you like to become a Certified Bitcoin Professional?
Post by: WeHODLed on March 18, 2019, 09:59:01 PM
Hi, I'd like to become a "Certified Bitcoin Professional":
https://cryptoconsortium.org/certifications/CBP

But I've been putting it off, so I thought I'd try to find someone to take it with me. The idea is to study for the exam together (the idea is *not* to take the exam together; just study for it). I can put in 1 to 2 hours a day.

Looks like there are 33 topics so it'll take 1 to 2 months to study (just a rough estimate).

Anyone up for this?

Hopefully someone is ready to accompany you to learn bitcoin with a few hours every week and for me personally, this is not possible because of the status of Bitcoin in my country at this time. Maybe learning muscles and listening to friends' suggestions from several forums is a solution for me because of this will save time from my busy work

Oh, why is it not allowed in your country? Which country, if I may ask and if it's safe for you to say?

I didn't quite understand. By which authority can they issue such a certificate? Who does this Bitcoin Professional give to the class? It's kind of silly to me ...

Why should anyone need those certificates? What kind of services are opened for owners of such certificate?
For now it seems like I can issue my own certificates and give them to everyone I want. Ofc if the purpose of them is just to show someone that you poses some specific knowledge about bitcoin.
Reading this forum may give even better knowledge then your certificate.

it is mostly a money grab kind of thing that this website is trying to do. to be fair the topics they claim to be covering are very intriguing although it all depends on the quality of it and i would never bother with something like that. if some day i wanted to do something my Github repository is worth 100 times more than any certificate any of these places could give me!

I don't think I'm up for this. All these lessons can be learned through online. And $99 + $35 + $35. All for it can be searched through google without money. So, free knowledge and my time is mine. And also, what's the point of this forum if you'll be needing to fund your study. I'll choose this forum, not that.

Found out this replay on bitcointalk from someone claiming to be a member of C4 team: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=777983.msg8769809#msg8769809
As that guy says, this certificate is only a confirmation that you have knowledge about the basics of bitcoin. So if you have this certificate this doesnt mean you are a bitcoin professional, not at all. If this would have cost around 25$ it would probably worth to have it but paying 135$ to get it and then another 35$ every 2 years to renew it its just hilarious.

I've never heard of this in my entire life. I've been into BTC for six years now. That says enough.

Since I probably have more experience than the people issuing this I hereby declare anyone who feels like it a Certified Bitcoin Professional for free.

Feel free to add this to your website and wear it as a T shirt.

The space is just so funny. People keep devising diverse way to solicit money from noobs. In my opinion this crypto can not be taught but rather experienced..

certificates are meaningless..
portfolio of experience is everything.

take for instance Andreas Antonopoulos's fame. that did not rise due to certification. that rose due to a portfolio of good open dialog presentations and speaches

a few years ago when i was involved with looking for experienced people for projects, their certificated resume/CV was not what i looked for. i looked for thier portfolio of actual knowledge

anyone can pass an exam by cramming in research 48 hours before an exam and then forget that knowledge straight after the exam. but actually demonstrating
them using real retained knowledge to actually do something with it, means more

its far better to spend a couple months making youtube videos that can show off your knowledge to the world. rather then hide in a classwork/basement and hope a glossy certificate does the job

If one wishes to be a certified professional in bitcoin then the who brought this should registered to a certain regulations like other professionals went through. Taking a standardize test and if passed will be given a license and be called as professional. However, it is hard to.comply requirements for this because it is not yet adapated by the government who has taking charged in processing license.

What's been stated in the op is next level of money making through bitcoin. As bitcoin is getting popularity as well the technology behind it is so effective it is quite easy to attract the common people. In this way someone have started a certification program, which is a kind of money making. It is a must to examine whether the authority issuing the certification has got certified or registered.

Everyone can call someone professional if they have the expected skill or competence to be one, I can hardly don't want to say that I am a professional in this industry because there are so much to learn and there is so much to make a study about if you want to earn, trade, gamble, and even mine for bitcoin there are many aspects to achieve in this kind of thing, And I think you can earn even if you only know one of which, I think we can also don't think that cryptocurrency is a subject but the technical thing that you need to earn it is the one that needs learning and educating yourself with the things that can make you obtain cryptocurrency or bitcoin.

Yes i do agree As this is a very big industry and this needs to be updated always . everyday you learn something new and this is totally a ongoing process to learn the things.
But if  is there some platform where new people can learn and they issue some certificate kinda thing to new people this will atleast give them motivation.

I was thinking the same, who they are to decide who deserve a certificate and who doesn't. I would take the certification only if satoshi's sign were on the paper because another way is just a waste of money and time, i mean, i don't need any certification to keep doing things with bitcoin.

Cryptoconsortium is old already. There is an old topic in the forum, you can surely find it with the Google custom search (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=search)
"Bitcoin professional" is a bit exaggerating because once you finish the course and take the exam you're far to be a "professional". In reality, you're supposed to master the basics. There are 2-3 others similar, like blockchain-council

Same as yours, being here on crypto even not too long this is my first time about applying or studying for a certified bitcoin professional.Anyone
wont really need this sh*t and as said there are lots of people who are more knowledgeable about bitcoin compared to those who ran this program.

What is the need for the certification as a professional Bitcoin price what ever you call it. Is there any employers demanding for such certificate? It is better for you look for something else productive doing instead of you looking for professional certificate.

Should Google the sample tests of some of these CBE (certified blockchain expert) programmes. Hilarious questions. Certified Bitcoin Professional's new to me though.

@gentlemand, better patent that cert.

certificates are meaningless..

They're not entirely meaningless but in this context, spot on. I can't help but shill Antonopoulos every time he's brought up. His attitude is great, no trumpeting his knowledge yet no false modesty, and I keep returning to his writings (or his lectures in writing, rather) and they're as helpful as when I first came across them.

This guy had no certification yet he's still doing lectures in the only decent academic course available for blockchain at University of Nicosia.

Thanks everyone for replying! Not exactly what I had expected :-) but thanks anyway. I do realize it is not welcomed with a lot of enthusiasm by everyone, and I do understand your point of view. But please, understand mine:

- I'm relatively new to crypto, I want to / still have to learn a lot
- I see a study group, a wing man, a buddy, call it what you want, as highly and mutually beneficial: learning something new in a (small) group goes a lot faster
- I also want to work in crypto eventually and this will help me "sell myself": a certification by a 'consortium' is better than no certificate at all; it will look good on my CV
- I don't intend to stop here, I intend to get more certificates (Andreas is working with the university of Nicosia, he retweeted something about a course today)
- price is still doable; the Oxford Blockchain Strategy Programme on the other side, that's expensive (like $2k IIRC)

So please guys, I'm looking for someone to study with me. I'm not looking for a debate on certification. You're right to some extent, but that's another thread...

As each and every activity relative to cryptocurrency happens through the internet, there isn't any need to one become a certified bitcoin professional. You should have the knowledge to understand the market as well to grow through it. It can be of a developer, user, trader or whatever might be, it doesn't require any certification.

What you're writing makes sense but the way to get crypto work will be by coming up with cool stuff from the things you've learnt along the way. It's free and accessible to all.

The type of people who know enough to employ you will be just as sceptical and mystified as us lot if you showed them your wee certificate.

If that $150-200 or whatever isn't a lot of money to you then go for it and do it for yourself. If the cost is going to make your life harder than it needs to be then I'd think again. Other than your own satisfaction and pleasure I don't think it'll make any difference for your actual prospects.

There will be free courses from more reputable places. There's one put together by the University of California, Berkeley - https://www.edx.org/course/bitcoin-and-cryptocurrencies  that's free but charges if you want some form of certification.

Several top places offer courses here - https://www.coursera.org/courses?query=bitcoin

If I were you I'd give it a few days or weeks of sucking up quality resources that are free and then have a think. This is one of many good places to kick off with - https://lopp.net/bitcoin.html

It is OK that you are newbie. I am sure you can learn anything here if you really want.

- I see a study group, a wing man, a buddy, call it what you want, as highly and mutually beneficial: learning something new in a (small) group goes a lot faster

They are mostly scammers. Watch out! It maybe dangerous.

- I also want to work in crypto eventually and this will help me "sell myself": a certification by a 'consortium' is better than no certificate at all; it will look good on my CV

As I said before, there is no platform that you can give you a certificate. Bitcoin and most of cryptocurrencies are decentralized. So there will be no cerfiticate thing ever officialy.

- I don't intend to stop here, I intend to get more certificates (Andreas is working with the university of Nicosia, he retweeted something about a course today)

I hope you won't but you possibly will be regret with this decision. Sooner or later someone will fool you. They will take your money and give nothing to you. I assure you that you can learn anything here!!! Just ask it and expert will answer to you. This forum full of helpfull people.

I also think that way, there's no such thing like the OP says.

It actually looks cool since you are professional but that's not how you gauge your success in crypto, I don't mind not being called professional as long as I am profitable, I feel being simple and profitable looks better than having a certificate that tells you you are good but only good in papers.

Sorry bro  ::)

I'm not sure if there will be someone out there who is interested though. Mostly people here are doing lots of trading from the background and we all know that trading takes a lot of time (at least in my case).

But good luck though, I have nothing against your intentions, but maybe most of us here are self-taught and learn through all the years reading and playing around in this community.  ;D

I can't understand also these ones. You are thinking if you create a group and get people together (mostly all of them has under 0,05 BTC) then you can make a difference. But you can't realize everyone in that group only thinks profit and know nothing. Please just use this forum and ask some question, learn in here and I assure you that you will be ready for everything soon. Don't forget, first message about Bitcoin has created in this forum by Satoshi Nakamoto. This forum has a historical experiment already. You should only want to learn.

This is a complete scam, no one has the authority to claim someone is a certified bitcoin professional.  If you want a certificate, just create a fake one and put it on your wall if that will somehow lend credibility to yourself.

I agree, the point of bitcoin is to be decentralized and yet it seems people are unable to leave behind the old habits of letting someone tell them what to do, if you want to know about bitcoin then read the bitcoin whitepaper written by satoshi himself, his comments, learn how to code and read the development and technical subforum and you will learn more than what any course will teach you and the best part is that you can obtain all this knowledge for free.

In the best scenario the people giving this course know about bitcoin but they do not want to give their time away for free, in the worst scenario this is nothing more than a scam like the ones we see in the forum all the time.

Wow, I have never heard of these certificates and the company that issues them but they have very convincing names in the board of directors! The course is really cheap if the only thing one has to pay is the application fee and examination fee. It's probably too technical for me, though, and I am almost sure I won't be able to spend 2 years on this since I have another priority, but it's nice trying to organize study groups related to Bitcoin knowledge!
Taking another look at it, though, I don't understand whether there's a platform where one gradually learns everything required to pass the final exam.
This is a complete scam, no one has the authority to claim someone is a certified bitcoin professional.  If you want a certificate, just create a fake one and put it on your wall if that will somehow lend credibility to yourself.
If it's true that the people who are mentioned on the website are responsible for these certificates, I would not call it scam. It might be the case, though, that these people are completely unaware of their names being used by some random people.

Merits for good questions.

Perhaps Satoshi will be there to be able to address the certificate to them.  ;D
I may want to buy a ticket to attend the ceremony.

Please do post the information to when the certificate will be given so that I could see my idol for the first time in my life and maybe the last too.  ;)

Actually, the question is not important. I'm angry with these people because they're trying to fool people. Usually newbies do this kind of training, groups, etc. they believe that they can make money by the way.

Why don't you just go to Bitcoin Core development team and learn from them or just simply follow satoshi nakamoto's account here and you will find a lot of knowledge reading his post. Rather than gaining certificates out of random guys out there.

you have to keep in mind that this is all new for everyone including those teaching this stuff no matter where they come from, how much it costs and what certificate they give you. this may be my self-taught-mentality talking but i prefer learning more about bitcoin on my own. and there are enough resources out there that are actually good which you can start from.
i myself learned most things from A.A.'s book mastering bitcoin, bitcoin wiki, developer's reference, stackoverflow and this forum.

if you want to "work" eventually you must have some sort of actual contribution, have coded, some work experience,... of course a certificate is good but if for example we are giving things rate from 1 to 100 the certificate adds 1 point while having a code for instance on github is 50 to 100 depending on what it is .

Why a certificate? I don't understand! If you know this yourself, why do you need a certificate? If you need a certificate for your employer, it may make sense to get it. But if it is necessary only that it was dusty on a wall, then I do not advise to spend money on it. It is unlikely that you will learn something new during training...

We are as it is having trouble dealing with speculations and opinions from bitcoin 'experts' we do not really want to add professionals to the list.
There is no legal backing for that organization to certify anyone in the field of bitcoin, and the fact that it's a paid service makes it more shady. Concentrate on learning and applying your knowledge for profit or the betterment of the lives of others.

I didn't quite understand. By which authority can they issue such a certificate? Who does this Bitcoin Professional give to the class? It's kind of silly to me ...

Scammers are working this way,  I know this is not fair but the investors are not kinds they are all well trained so it is not good for them to trust anyone without having proper knowledge about something or someone, so it is very important to control our emotions and not to trust scammers and fake websites, but scammers should be ban from our market.

I agree with this comment, especially with the last paragraph. That definitely needs to be widely recognized first so that it works. A lot of that knowledge is something we already have even in a basic level and that is all we need to use Bitcoin only.

Now, i personally want to learn how to be a Blockchain developer later when i can be in a environment that will allow me to be as productive as i know i can be. Because i believe Blockchain is the future, it will be another language in the list of the ones i already know and especially will learn in the future at a production level. The funny part will be finding ways to integrate it into companies and different types of organizations.

Why pay that much to learn Bitcoin when you can pay little to nothing to learn both Bitcoin and cryptocurrency combined. You will also need to learn the more difficult stuff like coding solidity, and  virtual Machine based cryptocurrency.

Of course spending money want make anyone learn bitcoin in th right way the only effective learning method is self learning and that is something anyone can start from this forum because there are so many essential threads that can educate a newbie to become a bitcoin professional and I doubt any formal education can provide that kind of knowledge these days so at the moment the cheapest path what I have mentioned is the best way to become a professional

Bitcoin was a way for individuals to show that they don't need the government to tell them what is money and what is not. I think it's ironic that the same people would rely on a specific centralized institution to tell them whether they're competent or not.

I don't get it. Why do we have to study bitcoin just to get a certificate? And does that certificate of being professional will give you income? It is just a piece of paper.
What makes sense here is that, you study because you are willing to learn and being a professional in this field means you are gaining and winning and you know meaningful things about bitcoin. Experiences makes you a certified bitcoin professional.

In fact, there is nothing here to you should understand. There is no platform that can give to us or anyone any certificate.

But it is not enough only get experience. We all have to learn how system is working. What is mining? Why we have a scalability problem in here? Why are they create so many project and cryptocurrencies. Which one is real or not real.

There are a lot of thing to learn. Just want it. Don't believe anyone which tell you anything. There is no person who we called Bitcoin expertise.

Of course every body wants to be a bitcoin professional. But I think that time of that study 1-2 months is too long especially for those people who are not doing or working bitcoin as a full time job.  As a narrative or writen report I think this is not worth it. But if someone teach you in an actual strategy I think this is more effective way to be a bitcoin professional.

A very big THANK YOU to everyone who has replied!

Some people were against certifications. Or against paying for them. I just wanted to bring to everyone's attention that Andreas M. Antonopoulos and Vitalik Buterin are on their Board of Directors. So it's not some scam IMO.

Secondly some of you have pointed out there are free courses, too. I decided to look at them first.

And then some people also wanted to join this study group. I tried to DM you but I couldn't (not allowed since I'm pretty new here). Please DM me.

And this would prove what?
Could we use it in real life?
We would receive a certificate then what's next?
If we really want to we could just learn it we don't need certificate or anything.
After all certificates could be faked out we could make it by our own.

It's not about scam, it's about wasting your money. Users have suggested you to learn by your own as already everything is available online and absolutely free, so why we need to pay for this?
I don't have any doubt on the learning process provided by that particular organization/website but the certificates they are issuing (Certified Bitcoin professional) have zero worth in the market.

Bitcoin is a currency, so there is no certificate of any kind to a currency, like a dollar that is also a currency but does not need any certificates, because each country has different rules for each.

Any certification must be backed by some credible institution for it to have some worth in the industry. Bitcoin has only been with us since 2009, so it is fairly new in the industry, so most people will not have more than 10 years experience in Bitcoin. <Note: I am not saying in Crypto currencies or Cryptography>

A Certified Bitcoin Professional qualification will not give you any advantage over someone with no certificate. Experience in the industry are just as valuable. <Gavin/Andreas/Core dev's do not need this, because their work experience speak for it self.>  ;)

That's true, I mean, most of the time, "certifications" like that or "licenses" are needed to be paid, or you may be required to do something to get it like attending stuff or passing and qualifying on examinations, which most of the time, are not free to do. Therefore, if it would just burden a cryptocurrency user with no clear use for it, I don't think it would be that useful. If it can help you gain some edge over other cryptocurrency users on your selected field, then on that note, maybe some would see the good side of getting one. But, if there is none, then most like no one would bite one it, unless you can really get some valuable and sort of inside knowledge that you can at least use as a tool to make your transactions and investments more prosperous.

This is about getting certificate so that they can incentivise their teachings to people.  With the certificate, they are able to tell that they are professional and knowledgeable about Bitcoin and then can organize seminars and other stuff regarding Bitcoin and charge people.  They can also offer their advice services in exchange of fee.  This is all about business and getting reward on what you know.  Which I think is reasonable since you spend lots of your time learning stuffs.

So you can show off to other people that you are the Bitcoin Professional? I think it's not a good idea, but for some people who wants to search for fame and popularity, they can join with that. It's better to stay behind the wall while we can do many things than to get expose from media.

Hm, somehow, I feel it strange because it is written in that article that:

Quote
The following careers would benefit from certification:
Accountants and Controllers
Sales & Marketing professionals
Professors, Teachers, and Educators
Entrepreneurs
IT Professionals
Call Centre Representatives
Project Managers
Anyone who uses Bitcoin in their daily lives

So, I feel that the government is involved in this certification because all of the profession is in real life. Besides that, I feel that soon the governments will announce something related to that certified.

I've commented on another thread about the CBP and believe my comments are just as fitting here. FWIW, I'm a board member of C4 and yes, I'm lucky to share the board with some incredible people.

Quote
I am sorry to say but this kind of certification has no value, at least to me. What was the process to get it ? Following the course and complete a quizz ? In their about page i see Andreas M. Antonopoulos, Vitalik Buterin, and a few others listed as their Board of Directors. I am a little surprised to see them and I never heard about this consortium

C4 has been around a pretty long time now but to be blunt, we aren't experts in marketing. We mostly just quietly do things we think are helpful. In addition to the professional certification, C4 also introduced the CryptoCurrency Security Standard (https://cryptoconsortium.github.io/CCSS/), and have run a very well received training conference (https://blockchaintraining.org).

The certification may not have value to you, but we have many partners who are strong believers in it, including exchanges, professional services firms, dev shops, and banks. We especially find that organizations looking to hire their first couple blockchain focused employees find a lot of value in it, as they are less likely to know what questions to ask in an interview process. The cert gives them a measuring stick that helps ensure the people they are hiring are not completely smoke and mirrors.

From the side of the professional, we have had numerous people tell us that getting the certification helped prepare them for jobs in the space, and helped them prove that knowledge to perspective employers.

I mean, I get the teasing. Not everyone believes that certifications are beneficial. Not to mention there are a lot of scammers out there looking for a quick buck.
C4 is a non-profit, that's been around for over three years, which just aims to help mature the space and professional certifications is a means to doing that. We always make sure to work with incredible people across the industry to ensure what we offer is the absolute best that it can be.

As an update to my original post above, a second Blockchain Training Conference was just announced - again focusing on education and training, not crappy sales pitches.

WeHODLed, if you haven't registered for the exam yet, I'm going to be sending you a coupon to knock some cost off the exam. If you get a study group together, I'm happy to give each of you the same discount. Also, in case you missed it, there is a pretty helpful study guide: https://cryptoconsortium.org/cbp/CBPStudyGuide.pdf

Welcome to the kinda crazy crypto space! :) A lot of people in this thread may sound negative, but they are genuinely looking out for you. There are lots of scams in this space and it's always good to do your own research.

I don't think I'm up for this. All these lessons can be learned through online. And $99 + $35 + $35. All for it can be searched through google without money. So, free knowledge and my time is mine. And also, what's the point of this forum if you'll be needing to fund your study. I'll choose this forum, not that.

I do agree with you. If you go through the contents  (https://cryptoconsortium.org/certifications/CBP)of this certification, you can see yourself that all these concepts can easily be learned from google/youtube.
Secondly, if I have $99 + $35 + $35, I would prefer to buy some BTC and HODL  8)

Well, if you have a certificate, you can call yourself a certified bitcoin professional (i know this sounds stupid but just saying and honestly has no use). You can prove others that you are indeed well versed about bitcoins. That's the best a piece of paper can do. True, there is no need to spend money for a certificate given by just a random person (i bet the person also has no clue about what bitcoin is and is just printing out papers as a certificate).
To OP, how are you even planning of studying together unless you find someone living in a close proximity to you?

Just like the self proclaimed bitcoin expert you are being issued such a certificate by some dude sitting at home and running this program  . When online, people can put up many gabbrish to make money and this is exactly one of them.

you mean the certificate ? they can meyt becuase they are the one's that issue the certificate and that can already be considered that they have alots of certificate for themself but that does not mean that he is already a blockchain expert/professional because like what you said , he might only doing this as a kind of business to earn money from other incoscent people   .

@op yes i do and we all do  . who wouldnt like to be a bitcoin pro ? because when you are already a pro you can do many amazing things and you can use it to earn good amounts of cash  .

So I don't see any sense in that as well not any added value. It seems that having a certification would be great. However, as we know it bitcoin or cryptocurrency is not yet fully accepted by most countries, thus having such certification might just be a plain paper. Along with that, is the one giving certification accredited by the government? Or, thus the government honor such certification?

If your aim is to learn more about crypto/bitcoin/blockchain tech, you can actually just study it by your self since there are a lot of online sources where you can educate your self.

unfortunately, in my country BTC is still illegal and is not recognized as a legal payment instrument. even no institution can provide BTC certificates to crypto users. but, I predict if BTC and crypto are accepted in my country, then the government will make a BTC professional certificate, the finance and economic ministry will cover everything needed for the security of crypto transactions. including the legality of BTC certificates will be important and formal for each crypto user. and I will be part of the person who has a BTC certificate.

You may not need it personally, but I assure you employers need it so they have a trusted measuring stick they can look to. Imagine being a hiring manager told to get somebody on board who "knows the blockchains", how do you as a candidate convince that person you know what you're talking about when they don't understand a word. In another use-case, how do you convince your insurer that the people on your staff have the qualifications they say?

Not everyone agrees with certifications regardless of industry, but they absolutely have their place.

We're volunteers running a non-profit organization trying to help mature the space. If it was bullshit we wouldn't be wasting our time.
