Title: Bitcointalk was down for minutes. Was it a test for coming April Fool?
Post by: tbct_mt2 on March 22, 2019, 03:04:51 AM
Minutes ago, the site was down for a while due to maintenance (less than five minutes).
Was it a test for the coming April Fool?
Even @theymos stated that he will not do anything for that day this year.
Maybe this year I won't do anything, and that'll be the real april fools. ;)

Or was it a test for some coming serious upgrade of the forum?

I really thought so too.

But I guess it was due to a DDOS Attack again. :P (or not)

I don't think so.
I witnessed latest Ddos attacks on the forum months ago, before the integration of Cloud Flare.
With Cloud Flare, I don't think the forum is too vulnerable to Ddos attacks, LOL.

Down for maintenance, be back soon (503)
The forum is down for maintenance. Try again in a few minutes.

I think this is an important thing to do, remember things to (Maintenance), so that the uploader is maintained, for Bitcointalk members it means that the quality is maintained, in the forum, which is easier to understand like updating, I think it needs to be done Forum bitcointalk is cleaner, course to come.
Well, maybe there is nothing more special in this case, just to update it.

I mean, the cause of the downtime is already stated on the error message. 🤷‍♂️ Seems to be a bit too early for April fools. Not to mention as a website's downtime is very very unlikely to be a prank to be used, as it would be a very bad joke in a business perspective as people are paying for ads here on Bitcointalk.

I experience this a moment ago..I think there is a little bit system maintenance for the site,,a little upgrade for the system to be fully function..maybe a little bit tricky for some users to be keen observant on the latest update on btt..

This error message tends to pop up on other websites too, usually when the running service on the server is not able to respond in time to the request and instead of a 404 this 503 is a 'softer' type of error message and promise a quick recovery for the users, so much better than leaving the users in doubt with a 404 when the website is down for some little time because of anything. So this does not mean any real update, upgrade all the time it's used, it can be a quick reboot, restart of a hanged service, etc.... (But correct me if I'm totally wrong, this is my observation)

There’s been lots of outages over the years here to be honest. It was probably just another DDOS, theymos bears them down pretty quickly though to be honest :)

Guys, I think you exaggerate April 1st a bit too much. Bitcointalk being down is so common thing and it don't have any relation with April Fools Day, especially considering that tyere more than week until it. As others have said, probably it was just DDOS attack or some kind of error.

"503 Service Unavailable" is a known problem and sometimes it is not due to maintenance but because the server is too busy. The problem was resolved within 5 minutes so the second reason is likely to be the cause of the problem.

I did not attend the April fools of 2017 but last year was not expected and came at a time when the forum had some updates so it was beautiful.
Everyone expects the April fools of this year so as @theymos said it is better not to do it.

I did not know that is a well known techncial problem, now I known it.

Exactly!
Last year, due to the chaotic situation in the forum after merit system activated, admin took that chance and made last year's April Fool.
It did had massive effects and made users more confused.
