Title: Nimbus testnet deployed - So what?
Post by: legendster on March 30, 2019, 10:17:32 PM
Hi, for someone inexperienced in ETH like me - could someone describe to me why the Nimbus testnet is so important? What is it about this testnet deployment that makes it the most significant milestone towards ETH 2.0?

Please try to use laymen's terms.

In case you don't know what I am talking about, read this :
Nimbus Development Update: A Public Ethereum 2.0 Testnet (https://our.status.im/the-nimbus-mvp-testnet-is-here/)

PS : Links to external articles on Medium / reddit about its significance would also help.

From what I have gathered it is a sharding client for the upcoming Eth 2.0 network. Specifically designed for resource restricted devices and for embedded systems. Once fully operational it would be very lightweight allowing even older generation hardware to run an ETH node.

Hope that clarifies it for you.

Okay, thanks but how does it differ from plasma? or any other sharding client being developed for the ethereum 2.0? Why is this Nimbus heralded as such a big deal by the developers?

edit-

Just moved this to discussions, it's getting buried by all the "announcements" in the altcoin announcement section. Still looking for an in-depth discussion on this.

There is a great writing about current developments in Ethereum 2.0 by Ben Edgington from  ConseSys

What's New in Eth2 - 29 March 2019 - https://notes.ethereum.org/c/Sk8Zs--CQ/https%3A%2F%2Fbenjaminion.xyz%2Fnewineth2%2F20190329.html

I've come across that post before but I'm looking for some technical and layman's definition. I want to write a piece on the most important upgrades to Ethereum so I wanted to better understand what the significance of Nimbus really is.

The closest explanation to 'what it means' is probably written by Abhimanyu Krishnan on InvestinBlockchain (https://www.investinblockchain.com/ethereum-2-0-testnet-delivered-on-time-what-does-it-mean-for-eth-investors/) but it lacks the technical depth that I am looking for.

I think all these developments are really not that well documented for the public yet. Maybe some dev can help me..
