Title: What was your feeling about KYC verification? Share your honest review.
Post by: The Cryptovator on April 03, 2019, 05:00:24 AM
Just want to know what was your feeling when you have seen forum asking for KYC verification? Let's share your honest review.

My review:
I was surprised when I have seen forum asking for KYC verification. I can't realized that it was April fool. I was wondering why forum asking for KYC since admin was strongly against of KYC especially for forum? Then instantly I have visited Meta section. I thought there should be announcement if need KYC. Once I read KYC thread then I realized that it was April fool ;D.

What was your feeling?

Really? Did you get the theymos' thoughts that he is against forum KYCs?
admin was strongly against of KYC especially for forum
My feelings:
The latest April Fool stimulates my expectation on 2FA to secure account in the forum.
We have had other methods to secure account here, such as Staking bitcoin address. However, such 2FA listed in the roadmap of the Epochtalk forum, that has not been launched, and still been in the testing phase.
KYC only makes sense if it relates to 2FA. In my envision, the security steps in the forum (this one) or potentially coming Epochtalk should be:
- Password & registered email
- Staking bitcoin address
- 2FA
- KYC.
Four options to secure accounts, and three of four are the same as we have on exchanges.
Only the Staking bitcoin address is a unique option to secure account, totally different from exchanges.

It means KYC is the last one in the security hyerarchy, and it is an optional security method.
Someone who have demands to secure their account at the highest level, let's do their KYCs.
Someone who don't have such demands, they simply skip KYCs.

Some minus points are:
- The forum is not a company, so it should not be responsible for users KYC with valuable personal information.
- The forum, so far, is likely a community-driven forum with community-managed mechanisms like Trust system. Someone might argue that important decisions made by admin, it is right, but in general it is very closely to community-managed forum.
- If KYCs implemented, who will be responsible for such KYC verification works? Admin might need to hire lots of staffs to do this, and need both digital sources to store and secure those IDs.
- The forum, at start and by now, is non-profitable forum, hence it does not have reasons to get stucked with KYCs.

In a summary, I don't believe KYCs will be implemented, but 2FA will do be implemented.

My reaction was pretty much meh. Besides Theymos seeming to be against KYC, Theymos did a April Fools gag last year, so I thought Theymos would surely do another gag this year; not to mention there was a thread here in the Meta section about what April Fools gags/pranks would be funny to see.

Had a good laugh seeing people who actually posted their real-life photos on the KYC now required (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5124947.0) thread though. LOL

Your question, trapping, every member is honest or not, @theymos, doesn't care about it, jokes, April is stupid.
I am sure that 20% are honest with KYC April 1, others are brutal.

KYC, basically is the principle that is applied to know the background and identity of a person.
KYC will usually request a scan of their user ID card along with other data to verify the validity of the user's identity.

You see the jokes that were applied to April 1 KYC.
1. Romantic couples of the past and present. Joke.
2. Your current coordinates are precisely detected as: directly register register number, Joke.
3. Name your first pet: Joke.
4. Please state all your crimes (at least 1): jokes
5. Gender: Helli computer, airplane, sex two, joke.

But there are also friends asking me about credit cards, so I made a topic: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5127001.msg50412290#msg50412290
But I answered it was a joke, like you put a flag on an ivory tower.
KYC, no need here,
Suppose: Forum needs KYC, from the first time you register for an account, your have requested KYC. stupid joke.

Every year the April fools' day surprises from theymos are getting better and better.
I wonder what will be the next year, should be something bigger somehow to overcome this year KYC event.
I'm sure he is clever enough to come again with brilliant idea.

I have been verified on many sites so it's not a problem but the main issue on bitcointalk is that the account can easily be hacked and another person can get hold of our details which is more dangerous. Plus it's a forum where KYC doesn't make sense as even KYC verified members can be scammers.

Just want to know what was your feeling when you have seen forum asking for KYC verification? Let's share your honest review.
The discussion on this issue has escalated at least a week before April 1. Therefore, I am sure that users who remember at least last year’s fool were awaiting such news. I think this phrase definitely dispelled any doubts.
Additionally, you can get extra-verified by posting a selfie in this thread.

However, such 2FA listed in the roadmap of the Epochtalk forum, that has not been launched, and still been in the testing phase.
In addition to the usual types of authentication, the document "Central philosophy" (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1r19dLjl5g26P2MJEgabBrUslYboAdu5uoIrZWHtWoHc/edit?usp=sharing) also provided support for OpenID, PGP, OpenVPN, automatic creation of subnets + IP source verification and Bitcoin signature (so on).

It means KYC is the last one in the security hyerarchy, and it is an optional security method.
Someone who have demands to secure their account at the highest level, let's do their KYCs.
Talking about KYC would make sense if the administration would act as an intermediary in transactions between users. Moreover, the requested data clearly violates the user's right to privacy. In any case, this is not only unlikely, but also impossible. And for the current needs of this version of the forum, there are enough already implemented restrictions and security features.

As an alternative, a limit of merits has been added for new accounts. There are also restrictions for posting messages. (This happens when the user's IP address matches the temperature of all the subnets containing this IP address, the address is removed from the white list, a fixed fee automatically returns IP to the white list). ::)

If you have already known about Theymos instance on KYC, I guess this is worst joke Theymos can think of. Specially user created so many April fool's topic here even if Theymos has posted any new implementation on that day, it will be taken as joke .
Anyway that red lines were distracting while using the forum so I just submitted it.

I'm expecting that one so I think I'm just watching normal people to react on that.

Its funny to see those users who are fall on this trick and someone are too obvious and feel the guilt which they can't control their emotion. Some are making their own thread about the objection on the current April fools, I guess they really have to protect their identity or else they will be into big trouble.

Really!! ::) you joined the wrong forum then.

I was awaiting for the first of April and was expecting that Theymos will try to fool us. What amazed me is the number of members hwo submitted their real pictures!

My felling seeing the topic was that social media and websites like Facebook has made some people do not care enough about privacy. If you ask, people would give all their information. And mostly of time for free.

And it made me remember the topic from Mike asking for people to giving their real name. So this way Bitcoin would not looking as a project to help criminals. It was a stupid topic. Although I do not have real problem giving my real name, you shouldn't be seeing as a criminal if you want to just preserve your identity and RL.

As the great philosopher George Constanza, once say, the world's should not collide.

The latest April Fool stimulates my expectation on 2FA to secure account in the forum.
I know account hacking is a big problem here, but I think 2FA is going a bit overboard unless it's optional.  Staking an address ought to be sufficient for account recovery if need be IMO.  All of the security features on Binance, which I've been using more of lately, have soured me on all of the steps necessary just to do simple things.  2FA is active by default, and I think I'm going to disable it.

What was my feeling about the KYC thing on bitcointalk?  Well, I've been here a few years so I was expecting an April fools day joke.  Plus I've read Theymos's quote about implementing KYC only when hell freezes over and thus knew that was part of the joke.

Depending on what kind of information was required, I probably would dox myself in order to remain a member here.  But there's no way any discussion forum anywhere on the internet needs to have anyone's personal data.  To my understanding, financial institutions are the only entities that need KYC protocols, and they probably wouldn't even bother with them if they weren't legally required to.  It's to prevent financial fraud and other criminal activity, and obviously bitcointalk would have no need for that data unless it was going to sell it to spammers, advertisers, and whatnot, and Theymos isn't going to do that (I hope).

I was kinda disappointed :( I tried hard to make something fun out of the KYC-form, hoping it would be used somewhere later on. But it wasn't, so too bad.

Kudos to theymos though for thinking this through, and protecting naive users against themselves :)

Actually, I was shocked when I saw the red text when I first browse the forum that day so I eventually get my glasses to read the text and I started laughing when I saw the KYC thing.
Well, theymos never fail us of his april fools gag. I even started believing the souvenir thread since that was posted on march 31, but unfortunately, yeah, april fools.

Seeing that KYC form doesn't made me feel anything violent that day, actually it wasn't funny or exciting at all. I haven't touched it as well. I already knew that it was a prank  :P

What made my April fool complete is when I saw people having fun posting images in Meta with a "Verified" text in their profile. That's the time I felt excited and been willing to have one too. Sadly, I'm not expecting that my title will be that bad. But it's not totally bad at all. I also thought that it will be permanent but it wasn't.  :D

When I clicked on the link to verify, and see the form, I known that it is a joke.
Honestly, I known it was April Fool before looking at the KYC form, but the form actually made me laugh a lot.
It looks very funny and it is hilarious if someone got trapped with the KYC form.

Looking back that what happened in 2018, with nearly a dozen of indicators like: Karma, Politeness, Generosity, and so on (I don't remember them all) I almost believed that it is a new ranking system.
Especially, one of those fake indicators is Karma, that I saw on other platforms.

Laugh so hard went i see the gender option, to many a weird option on that's case. I really like the gender of "Attack Helicopter". My expression just like a normal thing, the first thing i to do its to check a Meta Thread then to collect some information about it and i found a KYC Thread so many people using a free image, because of that i know that's was April Fool

I was in Medical for my internship. Suddenly My one friend called me via mobile and say did you look that bitcointalk asking kyc? Then I was shocked because I did not think yet can bitcointalk ask kyc. After talking with my friend, open my phone browser for visiting bitcointalk. And see really there is a red line box for submitting kyc form. After finishing my duty go to my room/mess and quickly visit bitcointalk without doing any other work. I also visit first the meta thread by thinking there is announce can see on meta. Again shocked when seeing a topic by thymos named ' kyc is required"  :o :o Try to read all comment mainly some people with green trust and find out about April fool.

I honestly was surprised at first because I don't remember that the date was April 1. When I first saw it, I think it's nice in a way that theymos said that it's for prevention of scams etc, which is a great idea but I doubt it would work. Then when I clicked it, I remembered when I see "list your crimes" something like that and I knew that it was a joke. It's funny and a lot of people have taken it seriously and not reading it closely. No attention to details.

Honestly, I didn't believed even for a second. In previous years I didn't realized instantly that was jokes, because I just forgot about April 1st. This year there was discussion in Meta about possible April 1st pranks, so it was difficult to forget about that day. In the morning of April 1st, first thing what I did - I went to Meta to check prank of this year. When I saw words KYC, I immediately remembered famous theymos words about KYC and hell. So, this time theymos didn't fooled me :D
For most of users here KYC on forum looks ridiculous. But actually, I know one forum in my country which requires KYC verification if you want to enter marketplace and buy/sell stuff there. And everyone accept KYC as normal and needed thing. Offcourse, this forum isn't about crypto where privacy is valued so much.

First, I was shocked because when I logged in I was presented with a format that must be filled with very personal data. But, when I saw the notification thread about the KYC, I understood that maybe KYC was just a surprise from April this year. But, if the data is really enabled for future development, I also don't feel this is a problem, provided that the data can be kept secure so that it is not utilized by irresponsible parties.

Well, my first thought was its April fools joke. But at the same time I supposed maybe it's the same story like with merit system, we were just informed about new rules. So I was 50/50 and only when I followed verification and saw all of those questions I've got that it's just a joke.
