Title: How Many Years on Bitcointalk? Take the Poll!
Post by: Searing on April 14, 2019, 04:36:46 PM
Well. It seems that yesterday was my 6th Year Anniversary on www.bitcointalk.org (http://www.bitcointalk.org). April 13th, 2013 was the day I tripped over bitcoin
after doing a Google Search. By the end of the week, I was $8.3k in. (Butterfly Labs, one of the few who did as a dumb newbie a year or so later
get my refund...barely....a week later the SEC raided BFL...damn I was dumb)

I digress. But if only I knew what I knew then, etc thus my current efforts to 'attic mine' crap I would otherwise die with. So selling the crap out of my attic and put into
BTC and crypto. Hoping for 1 more at least 7x price increase. Have to have some skills after 6 years into BTC and a guy can hope. Keeps at least some 'dust' coming in.

Anyway, just made a quick poll. I am unsure when www.bitcointalk.org (http://www.bitcointalk.org) even 'launched' (if anyone knows?)

So the poll may not go back far enough. Let me know the day and year www.bitcointalk.org (http://www.bitcointalk.org) launched and I will 'tweak' the poll.

Take the poll and post below. Also, post on how you found out about BTC and any NEWB stories and also how you found www.bitcointalk.org (http://www.bitcointalk.org) below

Thus this thread should make a 'cringe-worthy' read of NEWB's falling into the crypto universe. I know that my foray into BTC was less than sophisticated.

Again, at least take the poll.

thanks

brad

edit: found this https://www.freevaluator.com/ (https://www.freevaluator.com/) seems www.bitcointalk.org (http://www.bitcointalk.org) is worth a bit of $$$. Says the site has been around 8 years.
So it was started in 2011.

Damn, that is a lot of $$$ for a domain name!

edit #2

Seems the www.bitcointalk.org (http://www.bitcointalk.org) forum was started in November 22nd, 2009. I will fix the poll.

As an aside to Satoshi starting bitcointalk. Looks like the fake satoshi (Craig Wright) is in for a lot of pain.

https://twitter.com/PeterMcCormack/status/1117448742892986368 (https://twitter.com/PeterMcCormack/status/1117448742892986368)

Anyway. Looks like he has some folk that wishes to give him his day in court to prove he is Satoshi.

(Ancient Chinese Curse: May you live in "Interesting Times")

Anyway, we could clear this up quickly on my small little thread here if Satoshi https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=3 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=3) would simply post here and take the poll.

I'm sure he will get right on that. :)

Anyway, back to your newbie stories on how you found BTC and when you started on www.bitcointalk.org (http://www.bitcointalk.org)

I'm a year and a half since I joined bitcointalk. I became inactive last year because I don't seem to get some payments in here. Even joining a lot of bounties, it all ends up as a scam for me. That's why I'm just joining on signature campaign that are bitcoin payment not bounties anymore.

I have been around for around two years. I joined when the Bitcoin exchange rates were around $1,000 per coin and the main reason why I joined was to earn some coins through signature campaigns and bounties. Have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here!

I was fortunate enough to join in 2017 before the massive bull run really took off, but that makes me a relative fresh fish here compared to the OGs. It's a shame too, because I was following bitcoin back in 2011 when it was $11 - I just was unsure about its future and saw it as very speculative. It seemed like a cool technology, nonetheless. What caught my attention was its use by talented blackhat hackers.

As to making coin...I am now out of mining and am 'attic mining' ...selling stuff in the attic I would otherwise 'die with' and putting it into crypto.

Hey, its something. IF on the hope BTC goes back to the ATH I will look like a genius. IF BTC goes 'tulips' I will have an empty attic and turn it into

a Rec Room and my house goes-up $15k in value or past the ATH in price again. Win/Win. It is boring as heck to sell crap on eBay though. The pictures and eBay itself is much easier,

it is digging the crap out and finding a box. The cheap $50 postage mail scale works dandy. Boing....but this is the only way. Attic Mining. That I can still 'home mine'

in a sense and at least generate some dust BTC.

I suppose you also could go to estate sales or rummage sales on the weekends and flip stuff thru eBay to BTC as well.

Anyway, I have to have faith that BTC will go up another 2 to 7 times and this 'dust' attic mining project would all work out.

Also, for simplification, I just eat the fees and the shipping and add that to the BTC dust purchases after the sale. Worth it not to get into accounting

on this kinda stuff....just move it all to BTC with the majority of the $$$ made (or I should say all) with shipping and handling on eBay matched into BTC

for each sale. Made $900 bucks (including the s/h and fees) into BTC dust. I also put it at the tail end of my HODL BTC address...so I'm not tempted to

blow it. As it works now, each sale is the LAST BTC I could get to ..to sell....so all will come out ...if I ever sell this dust as Long Term Capital Gains.

This may be a 'crummy' angle, but gives me the illusion that I'm at least 1/2 assed getting some BTC and cleaning out my attic!

Amazing. 54% joined Bitcointalk in 2016 and in the earlier years. So I assume these guys have already made a lot of profit and are probably holding to some coins for another possible bullrun!

So, 46% are probably underwater if they didn't sell during the parabolic climb.  :P

Not sure about profit....the 'hopefully enlightened' HODL mode .....(in my case) is in full 'idiot' swing, however...

chump or champ we will see. I do know that even if all goes full Tulips for BTC and Crypto. 1/2 of my hoard (plus 3 BTC) I will just be buried with

and my Trezor...worthless or not. (The original BTC I made on my KNC Jupiter BTC miner in 2013 a 'mental promise' to a deceased buddy) (R.I.P. Qazz)

So I have a floor..now if I crack above that % plus 3 BTC...that has yet to be seen in full. So I do have a 'thou shall not pass' floor on all this. Tulips

or Triumph.

Unsure, how I'd go about doing that. Currently, this board is under Bitcoin Discussion. In that, it is a poll of when you started and your Newbie Roots

It should be OK. I suppose if not a Bitcointalk Moderator will tell me and I'll have him move it as you suggest.

p.s. no one in the poll over 6 years on www.bitcointalk.org (http://www.bitcointalk.org) yet it seems.

Not everyone that was in crypto pre 2016 invested. At that time bitcoin was stuck between $220 - $250 for around ~10 months and there was genuine concern that crypto might die out. Only those that were willing to take immense risk bought back then. I bought some crypto during that time frame and yes i did sell in pump of 2017 however i did not end up a millionaire. As for another bullrun i don't think we will see one for a long time if ever. The time for massive price growth for crypto is gone i think, if price does increase it will be over a long period of time (10-20 years).

I came here a little over 2 years ago. I heard about Bitcoin recovering from its bear market and thought this might be a good moment to get involved. I heard about it a while before but thought it was bubble deflating and that this hype is dying. As a newbie investor who saw the price falling from 1000 dollars to 200 i did not have much hope like many people who were in the space at that time. I googled it and registered here because I already had a reddit account but no bitcointalk profile.

I think you have to contact a moderator....don't think I can do that (or should I say don't know how) :(

If the moderator trips over this and does not think this is the proper area..he will inform me and move it...I figure.

I learned how to choose coins and I traded as the first choice to earn income. the information in this forum is so updated that I can make decisions quickly and accurately. here I also got a lot of friends, many communities in my area were finally met in this forum. for me this is my second home, part of my life is spent here.

3 years passed away already since I joined Bitcointalk and I haven't found a reason since then why I should not stick with Bitcointalk and keep mining knowledge. Bitcointalk is like a knowledge mine...

I first knew about Bitcointalk from BustaBit, someone told me when I was chatting there. I was a PTC/GPT/RevShare earner before joining Bitcointalk and I visited BustaBit by clicking on a banner. I don't exactly remember why I clicked the banner but most probably I was seeking new opportunities and I ended up here quitting all those shit.

It's not always all about earning, sometimes it's all about knowledge.

joined in 2011, so ~8 years for me.

i originally heard about bitcoin from a tech forum, anandtech i think. loved the concept of digital currency and especially the DIY aspect of mining, the security, the censorship resistance, all that. since i had a HD4850 gpu i got some basic setup info there, then once i had a basic handle on mining and tested it i joined here. been learning ever since.

8 years for me too. I think I heard about bitcoin in Apr. or May 2011 on slashdot.

I started mining around May-June 2011, using GPUs. I had been lurking on BTCtalk for months, but joined in Sept. I then sold everything in 2013, way too early.

After missing the 2013 bubble, I realized I was a moron, and started accumulating again in 2014. I also lost BTC to various scams, exchange hacks etc.

If I was smarter, I would've went all in when bitcoin was $2 in early 2012. I would've sold everything I own for bitcoin. But I didn't , so now I'm just an average HODLer. C'est la vie!

sometimes you forget how long it has been... time goes by just like that. it has been nearly 6 years for me (5.5 to be exact). the fun part is that i started after the bubble burst and during the price drop and still stuck around. if i am not mistaken the price was around $550 or maybe more and continued on a downward trend down to $150 and i was happy all that time because i knew i could afford to get more bitcoins in return for my fiat dump.

the first time that i heard about bitcoin was before that though. but unfortunately i was too lazy and busy to pay it any attention. then in 2014 somewhere online i read about how you could buy things with bitcoin without needing to have an account with centralized services like PayPal (aka the decentralized and permissionless nature of bitcoin) and i was hooked.

2013 I know Bitcoin, but I don't care. and assume that it is an ordinary currency. I started to be active in this forum in 2016, this forum gave me great benefits, I get the knowledge, and I get profit from this forum.

I left my real job, I made the crypto world my main job, I collected trading capital from this forum by participating in several Bounties.

Was completely fascinated by this nascent technology back then. Loving this forum and the world of cryptocurrencies even more now.

Joined 2 years ago. How did I found about this community? Well I used to be a freelancer way back but I suddenly quit because I was burnt out that time. And I just want to start fresh in 2017 and try to search for ways to earn money, until I found this community and I was hooked up. Then started to join signature campaigns, on-line gambling and trading, and the rest is history.

Lucky I was able to join prior to the massive growth at the end of 2017 and I'm sure that everyone did make a ton of money back then.  ;D. Of course I also love the economic and financial freedom that bitcoin and other crypto's have given me in the last two years so I'm going to stay here as long as I can.

I join bitcointalk in 2016, but I knew bitcoin in 2014, and I don't know that bitcointalk is the places of the founder (Satoshi) telling and share bitcoin knowledge to people. Until I found this forum from google because, at that time, I only searching bitcoin from the faucet and don't think about searching for another information about bitcoin. But soon, I realize that I need more info to know bitcoin in details and I want to know more about altcoin. So I try to search on google and finally, I found bitcointalk and try to join and search more and more info that I need.

Lucky that you entered before the hype of 2017 so i think you accumulate more enough bitcoin and soldwhile it was at $20k value? How i wish that i also come to enter same year but I’m not because the first time this was introduce to me in that same year I denied to believe and it took me another years before fully understand what crypto is all about

But as what saying, its better late than never so now i am enjoying the privilegeof being cryptonians and the benefits being here

Almost 4 years here! 😁 and i'm glad to say that most of my basic knowledge in trading and crypto in general, i've learned here.  I've been in around 5 or 6 camapigns during that time and i would've had around 2 to 3 full bitcoins by now had i not gotten myself amused by crypto gambling early on lol 😆

As to making coin...I am now out of mining and am 'attic mining' ...selling stuff in the attic I would otherwise 'die with' and putting it into crypto.

selling old mining gear for btc works, anything to increase your stash works actually.

being such a small time miner (a dozen gpus max and a few BFL fpga/asics) i have kept all of it, except a few gpus ive given to friends. but my HD4850, HD6870, and HD5830.. those 3 cards (well actually the latter two, the 4850 was just a test to see if mining worked) made so much btc i will forever keep them in a place of honor. they changed our lives. ive considered gold plating them, or at least the shrouds. unreal that those 3 cards still account for a large percentage on my current btc holdings.

and when i bought the 6870 (the 1st card for real mining) and showed my wife her words were "WHAT you paid $400 for THAT???? " heh yes i did. and now she doesnt blink an eye when i spend on gear.

I joined in February 2013, this was also the point where I started to use Bitcoin. Just got in early enough to be able to profit a little bit (not much) from the April 2013 bubble. ;) I had installed the Bitcoin-qt software in 2011 already, but due to a hard drive crash I lost about 0,35 BTC from faucets (which was worth almost nothing then). I think I even registered in this forum in 2011 but I have no idea what my username was back then ...

According to the posts in this thread and the poll results until now, it seems the community is still very well mixed (in terms of "antiquity"). I like that even after the 2017 bubble still some real veterans are here, despite all the problems of this forum (e.g. bad accessibility on mobile devices, spam, etc.).

Today will make it 1year, 3months and roughly 11days that have been on this forum. Although I first got to know about bitcointalk around q3 of 2017, but I was a novice to bitcoin then and never knew the importance of this platform. It was when I got to meet a friend that explained some important things about this forum that made me consider giving it a trial which I must say really opened my eyes to a whole lot of things, in money wise, networking wise and educational wise.

I registered on this forum in 2014 but I heard about bitcoin and this forum at least 1 year before, around 2013.
In the beginning I was skeptical and didn't join right away.
When I heard how much my friend earned here I decided to give a try and to join finally.
It was great decision for me :)

Amazing. 54% joined Bitcointalk in 2016 and in the earlier years. So I assume these guys have already made a lot of profit and are probably holding to some coins for another possible bullrun!

So, 46% are probably underwater if they didn't sell during the parabolic climb.  :P

I am one of those who joined in 2016 this is probably one the best year, the best year was 2017 I'm lucky to have seen Bitcoin reaches it's all-time high, not only Bitcoin, almost 90% of the coins are dumping, it was cryptocurrency's banner year and people are hoping it could be surpassed.

Me too, I joined here 2 years ago also but I wonder why your rank is still a Member? Are you not active and just visiting here for fun?

Actually, the year I discovered bitcoin is the same as the year I enetered here. From the eyes of the others, 2 years is just a small thing compare to the veterans here; yeah! It's true but I at least I'm now more knowledgeable and able to uplift my way of living compared before. So for those newbies and "newbie-like" memebers out there, do not give up. Study harder and push harder, I know that someday you will become great even not inside this forum but in crypto world itself :).

For people who have known this forum for a long time, it is certainly an advantage, it is certain that they have more knowledge. It will be different about understanding because sometimes new users also have extraordinary abilities. In essence, the experience becomes something that is owned by users who have participated longer. I have known the forum for a long time and I feel happy that I can communicate with many people in this forum.

I personally, initially only read information from the media, tried to discuss with seniors, then decided to join and what I liked best was that I could join the ico project here.

It's so interesting reading the stories of some of the legends in here but i actually came into the cryptospace about a year ago due to the influence of a friend of mine on campus when we were in the university. The funny thing is that i could have been introduced into this space way back in 2014 but i was not a believer of stuffs like this so i ignored my friend's advice to get into crypto activities.

Well i finally came and i am really loving it in here! the knowledge the opportunity to meet and talk to people all over the world about crypto. It's a beautiful thing that Satoshi left with us and i am glad to be part of this family :)

Also i got to know much better about Bitcoin and every other Coins from crypto market thanks to both Primedice and Bitcointalk.

I was so far out in the sticks...pretty much EVERYTHING I've learned about BTC was thru bitcointalk. How to keep 2013 KNC Jupiter Miner up with pools (1st generation). How to keep KNC Titans up (scrypt miners) who are truly evil beasts to keep running. (I never made direct eye contact with them in the basement when doing laundry..they long'd to brick themselves at any opportunity!

the scams, BFL, procoin, gaw miners, etc etc

drama, drama drama (6 years now) been a fun ride..hopefully more fun the next 6 years...

we were actually on the same boat meyt because i myself have also joined this forum on the late 2017 ( it was on the middle / 2nd quarter of the said year ) to be honest , the main reason why i ended up on this forum is because of the profit   . i was looking for some ways to earn a cash via crypto and i found out that bitcointalk do have some kind of a pay per post scheme but like you , i was also working on ptc , gptc ,captcha's and other online jobs before but unfortunately i didnt earn on them because thier withdrawal limit is too high and their pay structure was also verry low  .

7+ years for me. To avoid repeating myself, I'll just requote a few snippets of stuff I mentioned over the years:

I've started lurking around mid to late 2011
I was looking for a way to earn online a year ago and found an article about mining bitcoins. Then I researched it a bit and forgot about it until now.

Didn't really join for any political reasons - I liked tech, self-sustaining systems, money, business and discussions. Bitcoin combined the first 3, while Bitcointalk finished off with the last 2.

It's strange - I recall the number of years I've been here as well as a vague timeline of events I've gone through. But only when I start digging through old posts is when I grasp how much things have changed, both in general as well as on a personal level. Some for better, some for worse. But that's life for ya, I guess.

Man, it's hard to believe I've been here just over 4 years.  I've never been a member of any online forum or group for that long, not that I tend to join many anyway.

When I was looking into bitcoin back in 2013-2014, most of the google searches returned results from bitcointalk, and that's basically how I discovered the forum.  There was a lot of drama going on at the time with Mt. Gox and forum stuff, and I also thought bitcoin might fizzle out and die and wanted to read about people's experiences with it.  One thing I noticed was that there was very little censorship as far as nastiness and profanity, and that appealed to me.  A lot of other forums are almost puritanical in that they barely allow disagreement between members, and I can't stand that.

Finally in 2015 I decided to register here and actually take part in some of the discussion.  Glad I did.  It's been fun times ever since.

I have told my story already a few times, now i'm only a active member from July 2017 and the way I entered the forum is kind of strange.

I have been introduced to BTC cause of my poker playing and just being lucky meeting to right guy @the right time.
My now today one of my better friends introduced me to BTC and learned me a lot, I was a poker player but never had any interest in whatsoever of computer or online stuff etc, but when he talked about BTC, yeah that was the moment he got me and I didn't released him anymore, that guy was already a much more early BTC'er and is a very knowledgeable guy on the matter.

Of-course @the early start I didn't know sh*t and owning BTC, yeah I called hime 24/7 for thoughts and news and FUD that I read etc.

He provided me some place where I could learn and read and have some fun.

One of them was the famous WO-thread on bitcointalk :) i did enjoyed this a lot and spend my, I think first year only on the WO-thread whiteout knowing there was something else on this forum ::), so yes I thought the WO-thread was bitcointalk....
I really don't regret that, cause the people I learned there and how they embraced me in the community they have and learned me very much, its just amazing...

Later on I have learned to use other sections and have been active in some others as well :)

I can really support new guys to visit this forum and share or learn over BTC, cause this is just an amazing place to do so :)

Now I see i'm not so long active here but it feels like much longer and lately I have done a merit source application, never thought doing that when I see from how far I come @the start of joining this forum.

I joined five years back when I heard about Bitcoin through ForumPromotion. As I was an active users on various forums, I searched for Bitcoin forums and Bitcointalk was the first one that came up. Hence I registered but due to the 360 seconds policy, I stopped visiting Bitcointalk after making a few posts. I came back a year or so later when I discovered the "secret money-making tactic" of Bitcointalk - signature campaign.

Thanks for sharing, I also joined forum in July 2017 but in my case I wasn't not introduced by anyone so I lacked direction. I was lost on the forum, i didn't know where to associate myself, I only commented on project I found interesting and wanted to invest in, most of my comments were considered spam but then I didn't know until I was informed and had to clean my account and became more active in the forum starting August 2018 so I can say as a result of online registration I'm almost 2years old on forum but actively almost a year old and it has been a nice journey so far.

Even after registering I used to post things so little but used to read many threads. 2017 was unfortunate year for me as a forum member coz my account got hacked. It's been 5.5 years for me and what a long and strange journey it's been.

In that time I have regrown my virginity, become morbidly obese and started to go bald.

O how I miss that young tight-bunned idealist. My only comfort as the darkness closes in is to pass on my knowledge before I'm discovered dead in my assisted living apartment and they have to get one of them specialist toxic cleaning teams in because my corpse has melted into the floorboards.

I started using Bitcoin talk since the last quarter of 2017. Luckily I got full members rank but it seems I can get to the next rank anymore because of merit requirements. Eventhough the rules are tough on some other people, I find myself happy for being a member of this forum and keeping myself busy in my signature campaign.

I've been in this forum for almost 4 years. a lot of experience that I can learn especially about blockchain technology with bitcoin which is so popular and valuable. I am grateful that since knowing Bitcoin, at least I can improve the family economy by trading and investing in various crypto markets. Of course, the process is not always smooth in making a profit. In essence, we can make a bitter experience as a valuable experience and a motivation to be successful in this new thing (crypto).

Around janauray 2016 first time I heard about Bitcoin and then I was not much aware about this technology but I was keep hearing about Bitcoin from the people all around on the social media then I started learning about it on internet. During my learning about Bitcoin in November or december 2016 I found this forum. At the beginning I don't understand about how this forum works but slowly slowly I understand little bit about Bitcointalk forum. I started reading about Bitcoin on this forum and make my account on this forum. It's help me a lot for understanding the blockchain and decentralized system. In september 2017 I make an account on this forum and contribute myself in to this forum. So it's almost 2 and half years for me to join Bitcointalk.

...Well. It seems that yesterday was my 6th Year Anniversary on www.bitcointalk.org (http://www.bitcointalk.org). April 13th, 2013 was the day I tripped over bitcoin...

My 6th anniversary was a few weeks ago and the only difference between us is that I am still a hero because never rushed to rank up and additionally merit system was introduced a few days before my promotion, I was still senior back then. TBH I am a hero from a few weeks as you see in my private text.

At the start of the merit system, I was really mad because it took me by surprise and the last few weeks I counted every day to my Hero promotion.
I was shocked, mad, disappointed, surprised when the merit system was introduced, but with the time started to appreciate the system, when I saw how big impact it has on me and the forum.
From a total shitposter, evaluated to the 200 most merited members club and finally, I feel like a real member of this forum.

I knew Bitcointalk long before, registered my first account, which was opened after a year of only reading and got hacked after some time when the passwords leaked.
I couldn't claim back, because lost access to the email and there was no whitelisted wallet address in my account. Took me another few months to open my actual, second account.

My journey with BTC is another story. I was very early in BTC and with an old dual-core laptop was still able to solo mine a few blocks.
After that, I started to mine Litecoin because my laptops were not strong enough for BTC a few months later.

I can literally say that BTC saved my life and this is no joke.

As I have already mentioned, mined a few blocks and stopped with mining, when even LTC wasn't able to be mined with a regular laptop. That was the year 2010 or 2011.
After this, I forget about BTC and crypto for a few years because I was very sick and almost died. After this, I couldn't work in my profession (until today and that is why I started internet marketing) and wasn't living in my motherland for a long time, only changed countries every few years. In the age of 18, I left my motherland and started to travel the world. When I get sick, I was from 2 years in a new European country, where I had no social cover, insurance or even a home address.

I couldn't walk properly. All I was able to move by myself was a few meters and you can't call it walking, so I was sitting on a wheelchair and couldn't work in a foreign country, without the right to social welfare. I had no money so moved to a trailer of very good people (they never asked for money) in a winter, where I had no gas, electricity, internet or phone and that was slowly the end for me. Even if, I wanted to check the crypto prices, wasn't able because I was fully isolated from the outside world. Finally was 2014 and I was already living for 2 years, totally broke in my trailer, with no light, gas, with only a lot of debts and very black, stupid thoughts crawling in my head.

One day I was going to the hospital for therapy with a paid bus and I heard there on the radio that BTC price was already 1000$ and started to fall down.
I knew that I mined something, but wasn't sure how much. This laptop on which I mined was still up and running and I had all files still there.
I remember how my hands shaked when I found the dat.file and the time needed to sync the old wallet with blockchain data from a few years, was the longest time in my life.
Wasn't sure if I will be able to send my coins if not synced properly. When I finally saw the updated BTC balance in my wallet it was the best time of my life.

Sold my BTC litter later only for 450$, but that was enough to start a new life and open my own small company. So literally BTC saved my life and this is no joke.

I can't believe it's been 5 years...

I was extremely active on these forums for the first two years or so, but lost interest after the price stagnated in the low hundreds. I returned for a few months in 2017 as things were getting interesting again but left soon after. Now I'm back and hopefully third time's the charm. :)
