As the subject line suggests, the question is very simple, Why do you gamble? The options are,

1. Relaxation
2. Adrenaline rush
3. Get rich quick scheme
4. Make money fulltime
5. Occessional gambler - trying luck

The reason behind this thread is to identify and categorize the trend of why people gamble, especially the players themselves! Because I have seen a lot of people screaming about the bad effects of gambling here! But I firmly believe that all depends on what's your take on gambling!

The first two categories are usually belongs to a safer category who doesn't usually become addicted. However, the next three are the most vulnerable categories where people tend to get addicted! So identify your reason please!

I’m just an occasional gambler where my friends invites me to play, or when I feel bored surfing online. Occasional gambler are not prone to addiction because they only play when they have free time, and have control with their self. I believe those who are on the “get rich quick scheme” and “Make money full time” are the most vulnerable for addiction, they see gambling as their main source of money.

I used to gamble a lot but I hate it now, the rush I once used to love turns into fear and anxiety. I absolutely hate gambling now and I'm glad because I save money lol. No one wins at gambling in the long run.

Based on your list, I am probably an occasional gambler where I gamble if I just feel like gambling. Usually, I only bring a limited amount of money and I set a limit to my maximum bets and winnings for the day. Most of the time I leave the casino with a big smile on my face due to winning a relatively small portion of money but enough to keep me company.

I already left and quitted the gambling industry but there are times that I get tempted from my friends and peers especially when they tell stories of winning huge amounts of cash in 1-2 days of gambling.

Of course to relax and enjoy lives use my extra money, and it's obvious  playing gambling have intention to got win if they have possibilities.

5. Occassional gambler - trying luck

I gamble only when I have spare money, even though I visit gambling site almost every day. I tried my luck with higher payouts in the hope that with just a few greens I could withdraw the money I won. When I am lucky, I will leave a small portion for fun while chasing the other good luck if possible.

To try my luck at winning big. Besides, who doesn't want easy money?

I gamble to pass time and to relax as well. When I am in extreme pressure a few bets sometimes relaxes the body. I set a limit on the fund I can use so that I can control my gambling activities. Gambling has no bad effects on me.

Occasional gambler, I can place myself to this position as I only gamble when I have spare money and I wanted to support teams that I also love to watch, trying to gained something out from my favorites while enjoying cheering in front of my tv, NBA and our Local basketball league are those type of gambling  that I usually been involved and occasionally place my bets.

I don't want to engage too much, People who got addicted mostly gamble because of lust in money.

I think perhaps, in number 2, you can add having fun. Having fun is different than relaxation and almost the same as releasing the tension which you might have.

I am having fun in the gamble, but I don't think that gambling is one place to feel relaxation because for me when I need to get relaxation, I will go to the massage parlors.

I don't want to get relaxation from gambling because I cannot relax in the game. Besides that, I think it's better to play gambling for fun only because we can play many games with our friends. We could feel another experience in gambling games that we could not find in other places.

Number 2 it is, just need to be careful a bit so you did not feel addicted to it. And maybe it's more complicated than that, I like the adrenalin rush when I do gamble but I also want that quick rich scheme while only play occasionally.

I play gambling because I feel I need to get entertainment. By playing gambling, I can get calm and avoid stress. Playing gambling is like something I have to do every weekend. I feel happy and I exercise control to avoid being addicted. Let's play gambling in a healthy manner and don't get unexpected adverse effects.

Relaxation, I play when I'm feeling too saturated be able to fill my spare time. get rich quick schemes sometimes but not focus too much on getting rich quick cause gambling is luck, triggering the adrenaline is definitely I want cause gambling also makes my heart pound.

I gamble to relieve some stress at the same time to socialize with my friends or to get to know new people. I know that gambling is not a good habit to start with, that is why I limit my self. I enjoy gambling this way, because if you see it as a way to earn money I think it is more of a pressure than enjoyment.

my reason why im gambling is 3, because who wouldn't want to be rich without exerting any effort, i was naive before and just do jack shit with my money and developed a habit a bit later then blewing up a grand if it wasn't for my greediness i could pocket that 1 grand before.

I gamble to relieve some stress but seem's like the other way around.
I like to gamble for fun the thrill and of course the profit and there are times that I would just chat at a gambling site to relax.

You could say that I belong to the 1st category since I usually gamble for fun and relaxation basically. I used to dream of earning riches through the gambling world after seeing many people accomplish it successfully, but decided to take the low risk route and stuck to gambling for fun only.

I prefer non-gambling options over gambling options to earn money regularly basically.

1. Relaxation

I gamble for this reason mostly. I feel much better after making some bets, regardless of the outcome, because what I look for is switching my activity to something entirely different from what I do for living. And then I can do my job in a more relaxed way compared to doing it without a break.

2. Adrenaline rush

Sometimes yeah, but rarely. In practice this only happens during weekends when I buy more expensive tickets than I usually buy for poker tournaments, and I play in hopes of winning hundreds of USD. During those games I can feel an adrenaline rush occasionally, that's true. But I'm definitely not addicted to it, because I'm doing it once per month or even more rare than that.

3. Get rich quick scheme

Definitely not my cup of tea.

4. Make money fulltime

I'm not one of those lucky guys. So, no, I never even think of making money fulltime with gambling.


5. Occasional gambler - trying luck

Yeah, that's me during some weekends, like I said above.

But I always realize that I don't have that luck :D
Playing gambling was for try my luck, and although I cannot win the money, at least I have an experience of playing gambling on many websites. And who knows, in one day, I can win some money so I will celebrate it with my family.

I can fit into the last category,trying my luck when I have spare money to spend.Only people with the intention og get rich quick will say gambling is bad when they can't find a win even they will continue to play by saying that so they are here to make money but tey are the reason behind gambling industry's success. :) :)

For me it's definitely for the adrenaline rush, I just find it pretty exciting to play a couple of games of Roulette and have a chance to get out with more than I came in.


I think that the people who gamble for the adrenaline rush can get addicted though.
It's exactly that feeling that causes people to get addicted, even more so than someone who just gambles occasionally.

Although i'm not a full time gambler like many others on the forum, but do gamble occasionally just for luck purposes. Sometime i win with surprises even not gambling for win intentionally. Winnings come when a gambler gamble with the mindset of luck.

I chose number 5, to make money is the only reason why I keep on trying but i'm not a full time gambler. Just when I have extra funds. Gambling is the only thing that gives all of my pleasure for how many years now. But there's a time that I can resist playing, maybe because i'm thinking of a better way rather than taking risk.

I belong to the 5th category. I used to gamble for some fun and relaxation but, when i got some cash from playing, it made me more interested in money than fun. I don't play with more than i could afford to lose. That's why I never had a bad feeling from gambling. Except the 4th category I guess all other category traits can be found in me.

I believe it is about boredom for me really, I feel like gambling is quite entertaining and something that I have not been bored so far. I have played many games in my life, I am in no way a proper "gamer" but I do have a steam account filled with games and most of them have around 20-25 hours game play time, I get bored of games after I play them for 20+ hours.

Nevertheless, I have been gambling for years and that has always made me a bit of fun really, sometimes I get bored of it but after a break I can come back to it and play it like nothing happened. That is why gambling is just way to entertain myself when I am bored that's it. I never played to earn money, never played it with the idea of betting big or winning big, I see it like a computer game at best and I am just spending money on that that's all.

Many of us choose number 5, and I think it's because we are curious about our luck. And with playing gambling, we could see if we have a chance or not to win. Maybe this day we are lost, but we still have the other days, and we can come back to the game tomorrow and play another round. In that day, we could hope that we will have the luck so we could win with ease.

2 or 5 are mainly my reasons. I like to gamble but I'm very aware of the money I put in and the risk that comes with it.

Before I try to gamble, I already aware the risk of it.
But why I keep gamble ?

Fun fact : I knew gambling from crypto so without crypto, I won't be gambling.

To have fun honestly, I know gambling is not a great source of money and not a way to become rich.
Playing online and on the casinos really makes me feel happy, not unless I think for my money since I spend a lot of money on this before. Those who becomes addict usually on the last 3 part of the choices, you're right on this one because they too focus on the money.

in most of the time I will do gambling for money only and it will be the most important thing to gamble from everyone side but in sometimes it will be different I entered into invest only for entertainment because in sometimes it will be fun and entertainment that's why I been more attracted.

Similarly, I gamble to find luck but in addition, I am looking for relaxation because of unexpected results from gambling, it makes me feel very excited and interesting, making money and getting rich quick from gambling, that's really not the words in my dictionary. And I believe that very few people have these intentions and thoughts because it's so obvious, gambling is a form of business and I don't think owners want to get lost when they pour a lot of money into building these casinos.

Income is not at in consideration while you are looking to gamble with your hard earned money. If you are love to invest and make the entertainment then you can enjoy in the field of gambling.
If you have own strategy then you will be able to make money also in gambling industry.

I am really not able to understand your point! Investment and entertainment doesn't really go along!

That is nice things you said that all of us should aware of it, we should know where we are working and what will be the output for us, risk is the part of life and it is part of every business but if we will know how we can reduce and chance our risk into profit I am sure there will be no more risk but only earning, since now I never lost anything.

This had always been a reason on my mind on why i do gamble. Trying out some luck at the same time i do entertain myself on playing some games
like dice & slots depending on my mood.When i do see some sports to bet on specially my favorite ones then i might consider on betting on the same day
too.The important thing is that i do only allocate some amounts which is fixed solely to be used on gambling.

I do gambling for the All the above mentioned points but it will be in different from different situation sometimes I do gambling only for money and in sometimes I gamble for entertainment so it will not started in my life.

I am somewhere between 2 and 5. I don't gamble on regular basis, but I like to do it from time to time to feel the excitement and tension the game provides and the pleasure of winning something. I am not sure I agree with your take on these five reasons in relation to addiction, though. 1 is most likely a safe reason and 3 is most likely a potential addict's reason. However, 2 can also lead to addiction (people get addicted to feeling adrenaline bursting through their veins, and this can lead not only to financial losses) and 3 might be safe if one is gambling in skill-based games as a professional.

To take advantage of my sports knowledge - yes sports betting.

Since Im a basketball enthusiast for a long time now, this is my advantage. Although every games are unpredictable, Im increasing my chances to win because of self-analyzation + instinct. No way I will just rely on luck for this.

Bottom line, I gamble to take profits. Isn't it fun to used my knowledge to gain profits.

I really don't believed on gambling for fun purposes as sole reason. Even rich and high profile gamblers always wants to win even they afford to lose big just for fun.

You think the first two don't get addicted to gambling?  You sure about this?
I recently started thinking that gambling addiction has nothing to do with greed but rather a way out of lifelong depression, sadness or worries.

In my opinion, gambling addicts keep gambling in order to keep the depression and worries away from returning. .
To cure this addiction, you have to help the gamblers solve their personal problems first(maybe with something that makes them happy) while gradually taking them off gambling.

You really think no one wins in gambling? How about the skilled/professional gamblers like the poker players?  I guess you played alot of the gambling that are based on luck or you weren't that skillful in those particular gamblings.

Number Five(5). As a gambler, it has occur to me to be careful when it come to gambling becasue, if one does not know his/her limit in gambling, he/she may end up addicted on gambling to his or her detriment. Gamble occasionally, and look forward for luck; is my principle of gambling and it has worked for me till now.

This what I am thinking when I was in gambling, just like me I do occasionally gamble and the purpose on it is to have a relaxation after my whole day work. It makes me feel asleep after 1-2 hours in gambling so in that way I can do sleep earlier rather than to lay down without doing nothing and you can't sleep. So, I have chosen the both option 1 and 5.

Opposite of this Relaxation, I want excitement, and of course trying my luck to win big in gambling.
Making a living in gambling is my plan but I prove many times it's impossible for me, so I minimize my gambling activity but I am still looking for it.
Gambling has probably enter into my system, I'm not addicted to it, at least I know, but I just love to gamble.

Gambling is used as relaxation but looking for luck is what I do now with not too much to always bet because I realize victory will not always take sides despite how much you bet, the get rich quick scheme is not my type personally because I prefer to walk slowly and calmly maybe I will choose another advantage of printing options rather than focusing on gambling because it is very risky where the percentage of expenses and profits is very different so don't let your money come out in vain, each bet must be arranged very well and with all the knowledge you make.

I am an occational gambler who finds relaxation and entertainment unto it. Gambling is not a quick rich scheme who are maybe the goal of others. Whenever im stressed or bored, i sometimes play and most of the time i finnish my day happy. I play with my extra money so that i am not drawn to being an addict in the future.

I'm an occassional gambler and trying out my luck and if ever you see my betting history, you'll see me dice with too high target multiplier. There's nothing wrong with trying out my luck and the amount that's on stake is too high and the amount that I'll bet isn't too high.

Although, you said that it is vulnerable for the gamblers to become addicted including that number. I can say that I can manage myself and I'm not addicted to it.

I do it with my free time at weekends and also with my excess money when all my necessities are already bought and bills are paid.

Well I think all gamblers have this in their mind.
If ever lady luck gets near them then it will be great. If not, then it is also okay. The thing is you should enjoy the game and not pure gambling with just greed in your mind.

This must be the most appropriate reason why i gamble. Not to be rich quickly but at least double/triple the money i had on hand when i go to gambling sites, that's my objective but with my experience it is not easy to achieve my goal.

At first, when i started gambling a few year's back. I tried my luck to get rich quickly, but it didn't work for me and i lost all my funds. Now, i gamble occasionally and try my luck with as much amount as i can afford to lose.

I think he needs to search on Google about the person who can win in gambling. I am sure that he will find one or more gamblers who win in many games. I am sure that in the poker game, many gamblers have a high-skills can win the game but many of them are not publish their winning story to other people.

Gambling is a thing that cannot be ascertained, for me gambling is not a way to make a profit. The gambling game is far more a way of looking for fun, so don't ever target profits, when we use it as a way to make money, we will always get stressed and we can get addicted. That is a bad thing because when we get addicted we will be difficult to get rid of and it makes our lives far worse.

Gambling with amount you can afford to lose is the best way to gamble and reduce the risk involved.  I think we are in this to make money and not to lose it and because of that it is good we gamble with profits we made from investing.  For op questions,  I do gamble to make profits!

I admit i was once a full time gambler but it didn't end up positively and so i learned now that it's better to only gamble occasionally so i won't keep losing my money. Of course i gamble to make profits but we should not gamble seriously but only make it just kind of entertainment to have fun and at the same time to make profit if i'll be lucky that day.

For you to hate gambling this much, I am sure you must have lost alot from it, But on the contrary not your ideology of no one winning in the long run is incorrect. There are many winning and who will continue to win but gambling game require a lot of skills and wisdom to play. In gambling, if you jump in without experience, I can assure you will jump out soon with record of huge loses.

Although I do not know your experience with gambling and I wish you can share but many times I have seen that 80% who has lost terribly in gambling loose because of greed. Please lets know your experience, I am sure someone would learn from you

Well the main reason I choose to occasionally gamble is the rush that I receive just knowing at any time, I can hit a jackpot.
If I am playing slots for a say 15 minutes, I am content if I only lose a few bucks and even more happier if I win anything.
Anyone thinking they can gamble daily and constantly win needs to check basic math.

The reason I bet is to try luck and expect to get money quickly and not a scheme to get rich quick. Three downward sequences will indeed cause addiction and will have a bad impact if you don't have control.

Two reasons why i play gambling but sometimes relaxation do lead into stress when you are losing money
and this is the sad fact for most gamblers out there.

I also gamble because i want to try my luck sometimes and make profits from it.I know that if i keep on gambling,i will surely lose my extra money so i prefer to gamble only occasionally particularly with some of my close friends.I have learned from my past experiences with gambling and so i am aware already what gambling could cause to someone's life if you focus yourself to gambling.

I know we want to become rich as much as possible but I think gambling is not a good way for this one. Before you earn big money, you will need to lose money as well. I gamble to earn money but not to become rich, and also to have fun because I know its impossible to become rich if you have a small capital.

Even me too, although not a full time gambler but part time gambler, i gamble for purely entertainment and often time i do win big. Never had any reason to use my savings for gambling, but can use my remains from expenditures to gamble.

In most of the time I do gambling for my basic needs but in sometimes it will be different to make some entertainment and fun with my little time to make everyone happy this is the simple things that I have following every time.

I gamble mostly for the adrenaline rush I get from it and potentially for the chance to win big. There's not many other places where I can get a rush of adrenaline and excitement to the degree that I get from crypto gambling, and I like to try my luck with things every once in a while too. The odds might be low and against you, but there's always the chance you could get massive winnings from gambling.

Gambling can also be relaxing for me if I come home from a long day of work and I'm looking for something to do at home that doesn't take a lot of energy to do. Even better than gaming for me personally.

Actually, I'm not into gambling because I know that the probability if winning is always less so why I mind doing such thing, much better if I just focus to my work. That will be a sure money.

But it doesn't mean that I do not gamble at all, I seldom play lotteries (I think 1 to 3 times a month but I stricly use excess funds only). I do so because I have a neighbor here who won a mega jackpot before which makes me feel a little bit jelous on his success. Now he have cars, land properties and a 3-storey house. I'm just trying my luck, that's all. Who knows? Maybe I will be the next millionaire? Lol.

As a gambler afraid of risk will not allow the winnings but the enably of risk make winnings come. Gamblers are risk takers and those who are able to take risk are those who have the possibility become rich in gambling. Haven the small capital or big capital doesn't matter but if only you can take the risk, then you might have the winnings.

That's the best way one can get into gambling. One should never get into gambling with the funds for the daily living. There are lot of users who have ruined their life spending all the amount into gambling expecting big return in short time period. Very few gets lucky while more users end up losing upon which it is always good to spend the excess fund out of the living needs.

I was gambling games just for fun and entertainment i think it is mean relaxation on this thread, and i did not gambling games every time, i will do it depends on my profit from trading alternatives coins and small amount of money in gambling games, so i knew when is good time to play gambling games (usually gambling games based on the lucky dice game) and gambling games was make me happy after trading alternatives coins.

2,3 and 4 i think reasons why someone can get deeply into gambling that can be dangerously close to addiction. 1 and 4 probably are the best choice to enjoy gambling as it is. Never justify gambling as a way to make or earn money.

I prefer those 1 and 5

many players want to relax and have fun in gambling. and I also want to have fun and want to be rich from gambling, thats the fact

Funny truth is that I gamble occasionally at first to relax myself then when I experienced some wins, i felt my adrenaline rush is coming and I want to gamble right away. But then, I think my mood isn't lucky always. Lol and in fact, I made some realizations that being addicted to a game doesn't bring any good.

I think most of the people Will choose no1.For relaxation, I'll add another one which is time passing.Actually, I do gamble when I am free and kinda bore then I gamble.Also I think for fun many of us gamble.I guess there are few People's who are actually does gambling for making Money.I Don't know how they take this decision but It's really risky.                 

I am coming because of money only and no one will enter into this field entertainment purpose everyone is I don't mind set how to make money from gambling very easily and it will be success for very little people and they had the opportunity to be richer otherwise lots of people only get defeat at the end.

I just graduated from a reputable university with a good grade, been searching for job for like 3 years now and I have done all sorts of menial job to survive yet I would say that it hasn’t been so rosy for me and just last year I heard the story of my fellow struggling guy from my neighborhood who made a huge money from gambling and he now has a better life.

That was how I got introduced into gambling and I will say that I gamble for get rich quick scheme. I know  many would I would get many trolls here because many people don’t like to hear that people gamble to get rich but you have no idea what life has been for my here. I haven’t made it from gambling yet but I am still hopeful.

  Wow this is really nice to see that gambling gives you really good time, whenever people get bore they can use it to make money, for me I am gambling because I know it can give me good life, there are so many goo ways to make money and gambling is one of them, it has no risk if you are experienced and you are familiar to the rules of the game.

How can I say this. Well, I want to earn money through it but I am not that desperate use to be rich because it is close to impossible. I am addicted to gambling in the past and I thought I can do it, but happily I stopped my addiction after a year and a half. I still gamble but it is like a part time to me where in I put my money, I bet and just let it there for a while. If I feel it again I bet again.

LOL can you promise and say, you can win the money with the investment you have? I am damn sure and can say you will not be able to win for sure.

I think I do not understand what you guys always mean by playing gambling to relax mind, with all the tension that goes with it when playing, fear of losing money and all that. I always find this so awkward when I hear this maybe because I have a different perspective on this.

I am always tensed when I play gamble, I only feel relieved when I win and Its weird when I read that gambling games relieves one of stress, how on earth can I be relieved of stress when I my dammed money is at stakes lol. Well, I gamble to make money and I only get relieved when I get back my money with profit.

This two is contradicting yet having Adrenaline rush gives you out the emotion of being too excited/too greedy/too stressed
which is really a no way of relaxation.

Me just gambling for pure entertainment and making some profits or wins is just a bonus where i dont really expect too much.

but the fact is that some players do use gambling for that reason, many players play because they like challenges, they like high risks, with big rewards. of course the reason will be contradictory from some of the other players, but we cannot limit someone's reason for gambling

We cant all have the reason why we gambling and the money involving is always the reason why most people gamble but honestly the first thing that make me gamble is trying out my luck maybe that day will be my luck day. Mind you, I always set stop strategy so I wont play with the money setup for something else.

I gamble sometimes if I have some money who extra and I play gambling to trying my luck to earn more money but Im not thingking to become rich quickly because we know gambling is risky because if my dreams is that instead of making me rich it will cause for me to be poor that's I think. More people gamble because their try their luck to win or to earn money.

I gamble for adrenaline rush and to try my luck at the same time. The reason why I do this is because I can't feel it with just online games wherein there's no money involved. I also wanted to gamble as it gives me excitement and opportunity wherein it can get without working too hard. It's a great escape from the real world but still shouldn't be too much to avoid being addicted.

I know how to gamble right after breaking up with my first girlfriend. What I was looking for ways to experience the feeling of joy, excitement, and anger when I joined Gambling. When you join Gambling emotions, you will continuously change according to the pace of the game you are participating in. Things are exciting.

I would be lying if I told you that it is just one of those reasons I gamble. It is actually mixed emotions, all of the above options are mixed in one and I don't know what you call it. Sometimes family problems, I ran into this kind of activity. I don't know what's the case between most of the gamblers out there but there are different kinds of reason at different kinds of situations or timings.

I started this topic on 17th April, 2019 and I appreciate the responses I received from the community. We have received total 87 replies and I have gone through each one of them. I have seen many people have given more than one reason for gambling which helped me to draw a trend out of it and the trend looks like below,
