Title: Electrum download page showing old version
Post by: DireWolfM14 on May 13, 2019, 07:07:44 PM
I went to electrum.org today to download 3.3.5 to install on my work computer, and was supersized (and quite concerned) that the version available is 3.3.4.

I know there's a 3.3.5, the release notes takes you to the github page of spesmilo, and sure enough they are discussing 3.3.5.  I know I'm at the right electrum site, I only use my bookmark for navigating there.  I know I installed 3.3.5 on my computer at home, and I always check the signature.  And my version on my work PC informs me there's an update available.

Check for yourself, and please tell me I'm not going crazy.

Are you sure that you bookmark the correct URL? https://electrum.org/#download

It shows 3.3.5 on my end it seems you put a wrong URL in your bookmark make sure to type it manually. Check the above link and check it again.

Or maybe your Browser is infected try to use incognito mode and maybe there is plugin redirect you to a wrong website.

Make sure to verify your Electrum file signature: https://bitcoinelectrum.com/how-to-verify-your-electrum-download/

I just clicked on the link you provided and it show 3.3.4.  I refreshed the page, deleted cookies, I must be going crazy.  Oh well, it was just a matter of time.  ;)

Try this: https://download.electrum.org/3.3.5/

That works, and I was able to confirm via signature.  But the main download page showing 3.3.4 is still bugging me.

Try bypassing your cache to force your browser to show the latest version of the website and not an older, locally stored version. This is usually done by Ctrl + F5. Find other keyboard shortcuts here if that doesn't work: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Bypass_your_cache#Bypassing_cache

Alternatively, try viewing the page with a different browser.

That did it, thanks.  Corporate is stuck on Windows 7, and I recall I used to know these tricks.  So, it's just my memory that's fading, not my wits.

that is not a Windows related issue though. the problem is all in your browser that got stuck with a cache and possibly there was a bug or something preventing it from fetching the updated version. the same thing could have happened if you were using any other operating system.

Works fine on all my browsers on Windows 10. It's opening the newest page with Electrum 3.3.5. on top.
@o_e_l_e_o  Thanks for the tip! Do you think it can be something related to the local setup DireWolfM14 has at work?

I doubt it, unless he is a big user of "Offline mode" or "Work offline", in which case the browser will display pages saved to its cache.

As pooya points out, this can happen with any browser, on any OS, and also on  any site. It also happens here on bitcointalk - if you upload a new avatar, it can take several hours for it to display properly across the site. Bypassing or clearing your cache fixes this for you.

Just as small advice from me to prevent problems like this, use CCleaner (https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner) tool to clear catche and all other junk which is left in browser after surfing. After a few hours of surfing every browser will collect a fair amount of data, and if you not delete that data regularly things can become pretty rough. After one day of surfing my CCleaner is delete close to 1GB of data, that include cache, tracking cookies, browsing history...

But the majority of these 1GB of data surely wasn't browser ?

The default setting for firefox is to keep max. 50 MB of data in the cache. Other browser have a similar limit.
I am not sure whether browsing history and cookies count towards this, but this shouldn't be more than 1MB anyway.

You might want to check what CCleaner is deleting (besides cached browser data) from your computer  :D

It is deleting all unnecessary things, part of them are related to browser cache, cookies and browsing history. But it also delete System / Windows Explorer garbage and applications / multimedia. In short all the unnecessary things which accumulate after using the PC. So far it did not delete anything important, and this is because I know how to use it in the right way, or better to say just leave it in the default settings.

All browsers will let you clear the cache from the options menu without having to download a third party program, and most will let you manually change the cache size limit. Similarly, rather than constantly deleting cookies you don't want (which will immediately be recreated during your you next browsing session), it is a better option to change your browser settings to not accept them in the first place. This also has added privacy benefits.
