Title: Be Aware of Scams as Crypto prices goes up!
Post by: adi1972 on May 20, 2019, 01:07:11 AM
Since last year prices dive, many scams also exited causing a double whammy to victims. As prices starts to pick up, expect another round of scamming to surface soon enough.

Below is and article about crypto scamming that occured previously. Only knowledge can prevent us from getting scammed.

Commentary: How are investors still falling for cryptocurrency scams?
By Nir Kshetri, Channelnewsasia

One scam cryptocurrency founder defrauded investors billions by convincing others that their nonexistent cryptocurrency was real, Nir Kshetri at University of North Carolina-Greensboro points out.

GREENSBORO, North Carolina: Millions of cryptocurrency investors have been scammed out of massive sums of real money.
In 2018, losses from cryptocurrency-related crimes amounted to US$1.7 billion. The criminals use both old-fashioned and new-technology tactics to swindle their marks in schemes based on digital currencies exchanged through online databases called blockchains.
From researching blockchain, cryptocurrency and cybercrime, I can see that some cryptocurrency fraudsters rely on tried-and-true Ponzi schemes that use income from new participants to pay out returns to earlier investors.
Others use highly automatised and sophisticated processes, including automated software that interacts with Telegram, an internet-based instant-messaging system popular among people interested in cryptocurrencies.
Even when a cryptocurrency plan is legitimate, fraudsters can still manipulate its price in the marketplace.
An even more basic question arises, though: How are unsuspecting investors attracted to cryptocurrency frauds in the first place?

FAST-TALKING SWINDLERS
Some cryptocurrency fraudsters appeal to people’s greed, promising big returns. For example, an unknown group of entrepreneurs runs the scam bot iCenter, which is a Ponzi scheme for Bitcoin and Litecoin. It doesn’t provide information on investment strategies, but somehow promises investors 1.2 per cent daily returns.
The iCenter scheme operates through a group chat on Telegram. It starts with a small group of scammers who are in on the racket. They get a referral code that they share with others, in blogs and on social media, hoping to get them to join the chat.
Once there, the newcomers see encouraging and exciting messages from the original scammers. Some newcomers decide to invest, at which point they are assigned an individual bitcoin wallet, into which they can deposit bitcoins. They agree to wait some period of time – 99 or 120 days – to receive a significant return.
During that time, the newcomers often use social media to share their own referral codes with friends and contacts, bringing more people into the group chat and into the investment scheme.
There’s no actual investment of the funds in any legitimate business. Instead, when new people join, the person who recruited them gets a percentage of the new funds, and the cycle continues, paying out to earlier participants from each round of newer investors.
Some members work especially hard to bring in new funds, posting tutorial videos and pictures of themselves holding large amounts of money as enticements to join the scam.

LIES AND MORE LIES
Some scammers go for straight-up deception. The founders of scam cryptocurrency OneCoin defrauded investors of US$3.8 billion by convincing people their nonexistent cryptocurrency was real.
Other scams are based on impressing potential victims with jargon or claims of specialised knowledge. The Global Trading scammers claimed they took advantage of price differences on various cryptocurrency exchanges to profit from what is called arbitrage – simply buying cheaply and selling at higher prices. Really they just took investors’ money.
Global Trading used a bot on Telegram, too – investors could send a balance inquiry message and get a response with false information about how much was in their account, sometimes even seeing balances climb by 1 per cent in an hour.
With returns looking like that, who could blame people for sharing the scheme with their friends and family on social media?

EXPLOITING FRIENDS AND FAMILY
Once a scheme has started, it stays alive – at least for a while – through social media. One person gets taken in by the promise of big returns on cryptocurrency investments and spreads the word to friends and family members.
Sometimes big names get involved. For instance, the kingpin behind GainBitcoin and other alleged scams in India convinced a number of Bollywood celebrities to promote his book Cryptocurrency For Beginners.
He even tried to make himself a bit of a celebrity, proclaiming himself a “cryptocurrency guru,” as he led efforts that cost investors between US$769 million and US$2 billion.
Not all the celebrities know they’re involved. In one blog post, iCenter featured a video that purported to be an endorsement by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, holding a sign featuring iCenter’s logo. Videos of Justin Timberlake and Christopher Walken were deceptively edited so they appeared to praise iCenter, too.

FRAUDULENT INITIAL COIN OFFERINGS
Another popular scam technique is called an “initial coin offering”. A potentially legitimate investment opportunity, an initial coin offering essentially is a way for a startup cryptocurrency company to raise money from its future users: In exchange for sending active cryptocurrencies like bitcoin and ethereum, customers are promised a discount on the new cryptocoins.
Many initial coin offerings have turned out to be scams, with organisers engaging in cunning plots, even renting fake offices and creating fancy-looking marketing materials.
In 2017, a lot of hype and media coverage about cryptocurrencies fed a huge wave of initial coin offering fraud. In 2018, about 1,000 initial coin offering efforts collapsed, costing backers at least US$100 million.
Many of these projects had no original ideas – more than 15 per cent of them had copied ideas from other cryptocurrency efforts, or even plagiarised supporting documentation.
Investors looking for returns in a new technology sector are still interested in blockchains and cryptocurrencies – but should beware that they are complex systems that are new even to those who are selling them. Newcomers and relative experts alike have fallen prey to scams.
In an environment like the current cryptocurrency market, potential investors should be very careful to research what they’re putting their money into and be sure to find out who is involved as well as what the actual plan is for making real money – without defrauding others.

That's true because scam projects and ico's would take this market's opportunity to conduct a project that is only fraud and scam. We should be aware on what ico or project we would enter, we should do first a background research about the project, team, and staffs if they are simillar with the ones who have scam accusations.

The crypto field is a fertile ground for scammers, most victims are new and do not have much knowledge about the crypto market. Many sophisticated forms of fraud are created to bypass our faces. so if you want to participate in the crypto market, it is best to research it thoroughly.

Though it may be unpopular to say, one way to avoid scams is to simply choose well-established altcoins with a working product and reputable team to invest in. Of course, even the most legitimate projects may turn out to be scams, but selecting the cream of the crop will substantially reduce risk of falling victim to fraud. I suggest sticking with higher-ranked coins.

Things are going good at the market nowadays but people with bad intentions are taking these event as an advantages for the people who recently engage on crypto industry. They will give you some good investment opportunity which is mostly lies and deception and when you fall on their bait they will just dissapear like you never saw them before.

Take for example the repux and joy token project. They both raised good amount during their token sales and still the fraud or the lack of objective made them to become scam exit project. How could they justify that the project will not be continued anymore due to lack of fund? Employee salary?  Thats nut actually. There is why there is soft cap and hardcap which on the amount they raised seems to be enough to pull of the project but the other stuff happened. So technically they have been just purely made the project and planned to exit at the end.

Only newbies and greedy investors are the common victims in this type of scams but if you want to avoid this kind of happenings then it is better that you should expand your knowledge and triple check everything before investing.

Most of us are impatient and don't like to research the project before investing in any project as this will also takes time to do especially if you are not yet familiar on how to do this things correctly. So it's better that we should increase our awareness to fight this kind of tactics.

There will always be scammers around even when the market is down but mostly when the market is up. Now that the price of bitcoin is surging up again, expect the rise of scammers again. We should learn on our experience last 2017 where scammers are all over the place. We should be wiser in our investment.s

There's fact that when the market goes up, a lot of fortune tellers emerge. In my oninion, not only Ponzi scheme but all these kinds of tellers are scam, too. Anyway, providing the scam exposure situation in the past couple of years, people already have a specific amount of experience. That's a good sign since the more people are scammed, the more tarnished crypto's image is.

The various forms of fraud are added. I participated in the ICO Local Trade signature campaign before September last year, registered on demand on their Cryptoa website. com, passed there two levels of KYC verification with the provision of a copy of your passport and waited for six months to accrue their LOT tokens.

However, they came up with a new form of fraud. In one of their telegrams, not in ICO telegrams, they demanded that all participants in the ICO bounty write to their e-mail repeated information about themselves. Who has not written such information, lose the right to receive earned tokens. The calculation is purely that six months after the end of the ICO, rarely will anyone call on their group of telegrams that are not related to the holding of the ICO and, thus, they will not pay us the earned tokens.

This is a direct deception. Nothing should allow us the right to receive earned tokens, especially after passing through an illegal KYC verification procedure.

If you are in the space of cryptocurrency then you always need to be at alert and securing your self from scammer every time .

So I don't see market moving as a time to be scared of or time to onlynprotect yourself from been scammed , they are always at work and always do your research before investing in any coin or project as many find it difficult to read or spend little time to know what is new to them as no one is to be trust in the space of cryptocurrency.

AS far as I know Scams in cryptocurrency never ceases.  There are lots of vulnerable individual that does not know anything about cryptocurrency but then enticed by the "too good to be true" offer, triggering the individual's greed.   I myself experienced the method they are using, laying out a marketing plan that my money will exponentially increase within a year if I invested on the said "ICO" but I need to refer individuals in order to get the maximum potential earnings.  Aside from that, they also boast about crypto trading, that the fund, due to the great demand will eventually increase and can accomodate payouts for all entried.  They are good with words but lack in  company legalities.  So if happen an individual does not know about cryptocurrency they will exploit it, since if one is to look for a license they will just answered, it is decentralized thus, license is not need.  See how they twisted the scenario.  They are an operating company that uses cryptocurrency, not a cryptocurrency, so license is a must for them.  So be cautious when someone approached  you offering their Ponzi scheme investments.

Its not just about greed why they tend to go into ponzi scheme, who knows those guys need an easy money to put food on the table. Ponzis are easy to see which is why its easy to avoid, its those ICO scams that is promoted by real people i the business who seem to know what they are doing. If those ICO teams are into crypto that means they know we are all in this together that should be helping the reputation of cryptocurrencies which is under pressure by governments and banks.

It is always advisable to become aware of scammers. The market has also scammers who are always looking for a good opportunity to scam investors or bounty hunters out of money as much as they can. I am always in favour of providing crypto knowledge to the people involving in crypto market. It will help lessen crypto-related frauds, make crypto market clean and teach investors and traders trading skills. Newbies should be extra cautious as they are often soft target of scammers.

Yes crypto knowledge is essential for entering cryptocurrency market. Everything has both bad and good aspects. Cryptocurrency has also a bad side of scammers always on the lookout to scam investors. Crypto knowledge is equally essential for even those experienced traders, not only for newbies. In my case, I have been to this market for the past three years. But I have been recently scammed by a crypto exchange named BiteBTC. So crypto knowledge is essential.

There is too much to know but when it seems the great opportunity is right now, most people can't avoid investing in the once in a lifetime sure thing.
As long as they are investing a portion of their assets and can survive, any educated guess in this environment is a risk.
Scammers are one of many problems. Even without being scammed, you can lose your shirt.

This situation has developed primarily because this market is still practically unregulated and there are very large sums of money in circulation. Therefore, this market will always attract the attention of various hackers and scammers. In addition, to a large extent this is facilitated by the anonymity of cryptocurrency and its existence on the Internet, which is now located all over the planet and it is very difficult to track down criminals. The situation will change significantly for the better when states begin to regulate it after legalization.

One of the major things i see about the present scam projects, is that, they now find it hard to raise much fund and some don't even raise any.
The reason being that a lot of people now seem to be aware of their strategies and before they can raise any fund, some experts would have forestall their mission and save investors from losing their money.

Not only crypto is fraudulent but in life or in any field, always be careful because they are very brave to do anything to take everyone's money by force, in crypto most people want to be cheats because most people who enter crypto space are many new people and they are very easy to do anything without re-examining each project so that fraud is naturally everywhere.

Yes, maybe it's a good choice by buying clearer coins and in a more reliable and large exchange in the world, but returning to self-security because all the keys are in you and don't open the site indiscriminately because maybe it's a trap , it's better to keep it in a special wallet.

The sad thing is that these infi is highly needed by people who don't know much yet about cryptos but unfortunately they don't have access to them and by the time they really understand the game, they might have been scammed. Nevertheless, we in crypto right now should be very cautious and careful so we don't fall into the hands of these swindlers.

Assuring high ROI is really one big red flag. You can't be so sure how your project will perform in the market especially when we are talking crypto investments.
I have seen in the masternode projects giving you 1000+% ROI, and that's their main attraction.
This will only be true if the project will do good in terms of actual development and have active traders. Else, they are just for easy money of the dev.
And though referral is not really a bad one but it should not be a requirement per se.

This is obviously true. As the market started showing signs of recovery, with the major coins experiencing an uptrend, many scammers eloped out of their hiding places. I recently saw Bitconnect 2.0 with a countdown to launching date and I laughed. Some gullible crypto enthusiasts keep falling prey. But still, the scams will always search the next target to trick and get the money.
We cannot remove them from the crypto or other aspects because as long as there is money involved, the scams will always be there.
Just be careful and make sure you can search for more information about the news and you will be safe.

Scams in crypto space often occur, Very many also become victims of this fraud. Therefore, we must always be careful and not easy to believe in the person who sent us the message, especially on the telegram. Because they took the name of the project and committed fraud. So in the future it must always be vigilant so that this does not happen again to others.

Yes this is the time the people also need to be careful than the normal time because we can get the profit for good investment and our mind says that we can invest in different currencies and the new upcoming projects giving the promotion like it will be the future at that time we can fall into the scam that's why we need to be careful in this situation.

Up or down, scammers will never leave this world. In a bull market scammer won't just run away from investors but also listing their token on some exchanges (could be popular exchanges) in order to get more money. Even though they list their token and make them looks trustworthy, people will be eventually in a loss (when they are busted).

Surely scammers would be acrive at this time as the price of every crypto is raising again.
They would try all of the methods that they could use so we should really be careful on everything that we do.
There are also many other ways that scammer and hacker could get you.
First of is phishing a very popular and old trick but other still falls victim to these,
The only way to avoid it is to check if you are visiting the right site.
Second is virus be careful of the links and files that you would download cause you might end up having one.

I can confirm this by how I get numerous mails in my inbox asking me to fill a form and so many things that are obvious scams but are very convincing enough to still a newbie's money.
As my rule number one, do not be too greedy, no one will give money for free on the internet. We all have families/friends so if we had something to give out, it should have been them so think twice. Even if you give 1 cent out on the internet with the aim of getting higher rewards, it means you are defrauded which I do not want it to ever happen to me.

No matter what we advise, we have so many investors or people that are just bound to be a victim because they don’t listen to advise, so this scam is not something that ordinary advise can curb, I think they need to fall victim for them to learn.

The rate at which everyone has tried there possible best raising alarm from time to time, it’s sad that bounty manager, hunters are still encouraging them and not doing their research before promoting, investors too by now should have been focusing on already existing projects for investment, it is better to research on those ones than pre ico projects.

It is very nice to create awareness for the crypto community towards th scam activities that might be taking place in this time just to make sure that the money of innocent persons are exploited since most of them don't really know about crypto and just coming in for the first time because they heard that it is possible to make millions of dollars in the crypto space, let us beware of scammers and do everything possible within our powers to make sure we expose their work even before they begin operation or scam anyone.

Only mind and attentiveness can protect people from investing in fraudulent projects. Before you give someone your money, you need to carefully study the project, its team, all the documentation, ask a lot of questions on the project’s social networks, see how the administrators react and respond to them. Explore professional project reviews and do much more. And only after all of the above, you can make a decision on investing in the project.

I myself got scam by Icenter. I knew it was ponzi-like scam, thinking I can exit before I got ripoff BUT they were cleverer and exited before I could.
You see, this is how many people that has fallen a victim of these scam ico has operated in this industry, they tend not to do enough research or go for quality project before investing, and they pick project randomly by just assuming it will be a good one or one that they can quickly take advantage of even if they are bad.

The way you think is the way many other thinks out there, so you might not be lucky to be the first that will be successful in the game before it blows out, would it not have been better you invested that money in bitcoin or top 20 coin than the way you lost it deliberately on this project?

It's easy to identify these scams if you're not greedy about quickly making a large amount of money in a short time. All of my promises to earn profits above 1.5% per day are all signs of fraud

That's true because scam projects and ico's would take this market's opportunity to conduct a project that is only fraud and scam. We should be aware on what ico or project we would enter, we should do first a background research about the project, team, and staffs if they are simillar with the ones who have scam accusations.

Scammers always trying to steal our money and they use many ways to scams us. If we think many ICOs are scams, better invest when the project listed in exchangers and right now, IEOs more popular than ICOs

Its better to join in some IEOs from big exchangers. Its more legit because managed by exchanger and they must be make their own research before held IEOs. Many investor lossing trust on ICOs because too many scam in 2018 and hopely there is regulation about ICOs in near future

The IEO currently has public support quickly based on what they have done related to the stock exchange when the project has finished. but that does not mean that the IEO is not a fraud, they may turn out to be bad if the opportunity arises. whatever it is, whether it's IEO / ICO, my advice is don't be easy to believe, always be on the alert, and if there is suspicion it's better to avoid it.

ICO's were truly the best years back to get good profit, but things changed when more ico's strike the market with similar project backing. These days IEOs keep on coming and there is good number of projects for investing. Over the days, through IEOs more scams will emerge. It is us who keep things more analytic and get the best.

Nir Kshetri is professor of management at University of North Carolina-Greensboro. This commentary first appeared on The Conversation.

Thanks for the reminder my friend. This is one of the things that I thought of when I'm seeing the prices go up again. Just to recall when ETH was around 600ish and ICO's were a hot trend, that was the time when there were so much scams and they all disappeared when the market dropped. And now that it's starting to climb back up, yes. We might expect these scams to come back again. Good thing though that we now have IEO's which provides security to us, investors instead of the traditional ICO's. I participated in one IEO that didn't only sell out their first round of IEO (http://ecomi.com?utm_source=ecomilx), but together with their private sales. IEO's allows us to see what we invested at rather than waiting for the tokens to be released at the traditional fund raising to be finished

Scams do not stop in real life neither, there are scams that have been going on with fiat for centuries now, even during Greek/Macedonian/roman times (even as far as Egyptian times) there were scam artists who stole money from people, so it would be naive to think that bitcoin or any crypto would stop that. Just like when crypto was used to buy drugs and hire hitman to kill people how everyone claimed "bitcoin causes drug usage!!", well no it didn't people used dollars and fiat way before bitcoin started to actually buy drugs, now its just provides privacy on top of that.

Scams will never end, it didn't end with fiat, it didn't end with banking revolution and it will not end with crypto neither, people who are looking to make a quick buck from fooling people will continue to exist forever.

Cryptocurrency base fraudster is like hiding in the dark, thats why they are very active nowadays! In some intances they used their real identity to prove that the project or investment they offered is true and legit. so we better extra careful and the best thing to do is double check any platforms or investments site that you want to get involve or before you join or invest, observe precautionary measures in everything you do specially when the money is getting involve. scams are always present anywhere the fraudsters are just waiting the right time to strike and devour its victim. specially when the market was hot and showing impressive performance like these days so goodluck everyone.

Truth undiluted! I could remember truly as regards several vases of scams coming from wicked folks seizing the opportunity of many rushing into crypto to pitch their tents there cos first, many saw it as a way to make huge money so quick. Second, many sees it as their saviour away from some options like Real estate and the likes, where they think they can't get quick money as they can with crypto. Hence,  we must be careful again this time around.

Thanks for reminding mostly here, it's not enough to just remind them when someone will cry again as he become a recent victim of another scam. And we already have an example about this:

https://nulltx.com/someone-is-trying-to-create-bitconnect-2-0-once-again/
https://coinfomania.com/bitconnect-2-0-scam/

as long as newbies keeps coming, always expect some victims. It is usually their own actions that leads them to all these scams. We can only do so much in reminding them and posting some guides.
Newbies and those investors that never learned from the past, they will keep on operating and re-inventing their scheme. Sadly, there's someone that I've talked about this kind of topic and still he said he will keep on investing although he's aware of the risk and he might eventually scammed in the end. He wants easy and quick money, I guess there are people that has that kind of mindset so potential victims are still there. We have warned them and we did our part already.

Right, it is their fault because they don't want to listen when in fact all you have to do is to give them advice. Who else would not want to listen to a good advice? That person might be a close-minded person so ignore those people because it would be a waste of your precious time.

Thanks so much for this. That is just the truth as the market keeps going up more scam projects will spring up looking for who to scam, thus the reason why it's wise to overlook the hype and go for active products, experienced and verifiable team.
We really need to arm ourselves with the right knowledge and put a stop to these fraudulent activities, at least to a reasonable length.

How long ago this was written, although initially there was a theory that all programmers went just to the robbery, because the development of the product was not so profitable.

The crypto field is a fertile ground for scammers, most victims are new and do not have much knowledge about the crypto market. Many sophisticated forms of fraud are created to bypass our faces. so if you want to participate in the crypto market, it is best to research it thoroughly.
I agree that most of the victims of scammers are beginners who do not have much knowledge about crypto, scammers always try to
create ways to commit fraud, we must be more careful investing in crypto, do research and thorough analysis to reduce the risk of scam

scammers have many ways to be able to commit fraud, they always take advantage of all situations that occur in the crypto market, beginners must be more careful in choosing projects because there are many projects that have the potential to scam, the victims of scammers are usually beginners who don't have much experience in crypto

These situations look like a mouse trap for the potential scammed people, scammers are developing the scam technics for scamming more. Beginners debate with me about the punishment level of scammers by Interpol or similar police organizations.

Thanks for sharing this information. However in reality, it's very tough to find the scan at it's early stage. Hope there will be some way to find out very soon to prevent this kind of scams.

It's easy to identify these scams if you're not greedy about quickly making a large amount of money in a short time. All of my promises to earn profits above 1.5% per day are all signs of fraud

need to be aware of such signs, even I don't dare to take advantage of 1.5% a day both in investment or trade, except with bitcoin I believe that because bitcoin has given me profits after what happened yesterday with the increase in the price of bitcoin.

You can earn yourself 1.5% every day with trade learning and experience, there are many people who have done this

This is just the truth and doesn't need to be looked twice. Now the market is recovering gradually even projects whose team abandoned will start reviving so that they can defraud more investors. Also, many upcoming projects with no verification whatsoever will also spring up to make away with investors funds.
In this time, there is need to be very careful so that we don't give them the opportunity they want.
