Title: 24 word seed recovery question?
Post by: DrBitcoin on May 20, 2019, 07:10:43 PM
I have a ledger nano s with 24 seed word.
I got a ledger nano x, and entered that 24 seed word.

Now all my private keys are on both ledger devices.

My question is, let’s say I generate a new Litecoin wallet on my new ledger nano x. I send 1 LTC to that device. Is the private key to that wallet also on my original nano s device?

So let’s say I get a third device and enter that 24 seed word? Is that new Litecoin wallet on there?

So confused.

Same seed = same wallet.

Ex: If you use the seed "spy gift music..." in the Nano S, and then use it in the Nano X, they will be the same wallet.

If you want a new (different) wallet, you create a new (different) seed and use it in your device.

Yes.

Also yes.

Your 24 word seed phrase is encoding a very long random number known as your seed. The seed is what is used to generate your private keys by deterministic wallets (https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Deterministic_wallet). Using the same seed phrase means it is decoded to the same seed and therefore generates the same private keys for the same wallets.

The litecoin's private key or address is already part of the wallet that are generated under the 24 seed phrase. So no matter which device you import your wallet to using the 24 seed phrase, those specific private keys or wallets will always be the same.
So your Litecoin balance will always reflect in whichever device that seed phrase was imported to.

The coins are actually not on your ledger, they are on the blockchain. So you need to connect the ledger to a chain in order to "get" the coins, the ledger just holds your keys/words. The ledger is just used to access your address.

24 seed words only work with the same device for a hardware wallet.
If the word for tezos then it will work with the tezos
If the word for ledger Nano then it will work with the ledger Nano

You mean't TezosTrezor, right?

Anyway, wrong. Your Ledger Nano recovery seed can work on the Trezor hardware wallets. As long as the hardware wallet follows the same BIP standards, then it would work.

That’s what I use mainly, although between two Ledger Nano S (no X). I’ve got them cloned after initializing my second device with the same 24 word seed, and whatever you do on one of the devices is visible from the other and vice-versa.

The only think to bear in mind is that Ledger Nano X has a much greater capacity than Ledger Nanos S for its Apps, so while the Nano X may manage to load all the Apps simultaneously, the Ledger Nano S may need to delete and load given Apps in order to manage your assets.

Ledger seed will work in any wallet that support BIP32/BIP39/BIP44 standards (https://support.ledger.com/hc/en-us/articles/115005297709-Export-your-accounts), and that includes all Ledger HW wallets and some third-party software wallets. It also includes some other hardware wallets such as Trezor.

What is important to emphasize that it is not recommended to type seed words anywhere else then in hardware wallet, otherwise it is considered that seed can be compromised. This does not mean that seed should not have backup, just the opposite - but that is not wisely to type seed in some desktop wallet only for the purpose of checking the accuracy of seed. There are other more secure methods for this, and Ledger is have one in Ledger Live (https://support.ledger.com/hc/en-us/articles/360007223753-Recovery-Check).

Take note each wallet might have derivation path. I've seen few people who thought they couldn't recover their coins (while they only have mnemonic seed) either because they don't have knowledge or know about derivation path.
