Just imagine seeing your grandma during holidays and asking, "what's keeping you busy?", and the responded will be, "mining bitcoin" ;D. That will be priceless.  ;D. So for 10 months, this old lady has been 'stealing electricity', but it look closely at the article, it looks like the profit is around $940 only. But she has to pay $1450 + jail time.

And it happened in China, where electricity is cheaper than the rest of the world
Here in Brazil we have a lot of people who steals electricity and this affects the price of energy we pay, it's a shame

By the way, Grandma rocks 🤪
I wish she was my own one 😉

it is said in the article that the grandma admitted that she already sold some of the profit she made through mining bitcoin.
as much as I love seeing old people adapting to new technologies I think the family just made her an escape goat since
if the suspect is younger the sentence could be a lot more severe.

"Her family members were reportedly regretful for her actions and offered to refund the 6500 yuan income, which is now paid"

I get surprised of a 61 year grandma knowing about mining and running a rig. It is truly unbelievable, because in my country even the younger generation doesn't have any idea about bitcoin. This describes the growth of bitcoin within China as a trading asset as well in mining. These might also be the reason for China government to come up with plans to stop mining process within the country.

Wow, I couldn't imagine that a 61-year-old grandma would be so smart to manage a mining business. She was just unlucky because she's living in a country which prohibits mining. China has really a great number of miners. That grandma is earning enough at her age.

I feel sad for her but that was totally cool, a grandma that have put passion on mining bitcoin and even steal the power? Who could have such courage at this moment. Well I mined last year with ether and I kinda feel guilty also because at use the governments supposed power to mine also, that time when I was living with my dad on his barracks because he was top official and I did really have a slight of fear of being caught but no one had, lucky me.

You have a logical theory on this situation. But we will not know the real story behind this news.
On a different note, reading the title alone seems pretty cool even if the grandma did wrong on this part.  ;D
She didn't have formal education per se but she learned how to mine btc, this is the power of internet nowadays.
You can learn a lot of stuffs via net. More than likely she's a member of a chinese crypto forum.
She can extract mining information from different net sources, so it is more than plausible that she learned how to mine from them.

Is it legit news from a reliable source? If so, then that grandma has been living a thug life for years.
I'm just really surprised that an older woman got great skills in mining but the sad thing is she has to pay for it.
That's the risk of banning mining that some miners have to pay. That grandma is just so cool.

The risk vs reward wasn't worth it for her if she really wanted to break the low.  She got a decent amount of jail time and she only earned a few scraps of bitcoin.  I do agree with other posters that it is amazing that an old lady was actually going around mining bitcoin when most people still don't even know what it is.

Stealing electricity is not a new thing as you can see those kind of activities in many third world countries, but are the people in Brazil stealing electricity for mining, if that is the case i will be surprised  :o.
I am not convinced that an old grandma understands how bitcoin mining works and she stole the electricity to mine bitcoin which is really weired, may be someone did that and she was caught instead. I am not a person who believes every media story and that is the reason i am skeptical about this news.

What surprises me the most is not how she was able to steal the power, is how was she able to come up with idea the planing for it knowing whether it is profitable or not, and most importantly is how she was able to set up miners and assemble the mining machine, i mean poeple around 30 and 20 don't even know what bitcoin is and struggle with anything related to computers, let even mining, which makes me think that she is not alone in this plan.

61? She's not that old. Most people at that age aren't even retired.

I like what she did. She broke the stereotype that old people don't understand new technologies. She should be invited to teach youngsters and make them jealous that an  older woman can do nerdy things and that it's never too late to learn.

Yes bro, I live in Brazil and we have some local foruns to discuss about games, computers and cryptos in general, and there is a lot of people who steals electricity for mining
In Brazil we have some poor places where people live and most of all are controlled by criminals, and they steal energy, tv, water, internet...

I was shocked for this, I hope she will not stealing electricty because she caught the will go to the jail. I think why she do that because she wants to earn more money because she have legal electrcity she will pay monthly . In my country they have a lot of jumper or stealing electricty but once they caught they will not go to prison. She is miner of bitcoin and in her age Im surprised for that.

Is it real?
Well, too difficult to say this. A Grandma, with her spirit to mine Bitcoin, it's wow...
However, stealing electricity for mining? Personally, I really don't have that idea. She is very brave, but she really takes the risky and wrong ways for mining.
I hope that we can be wiser when going for mining Bitcoin in order to get more and more BTC. This is not, for example, this is for a lesson.

I agree with you. The family or someone else was probably using her to run the mining business while protecting their identity.
There is no way a 61 years old lady (that only had junior high school education) could be mining bitcoin by herself without assistence of another person, with technological and informatical knowledge.

It's good to see people intrested in blockchain tech, unfortunately it was through criminal enterprise.

Depends on their way of living, some of them already having a problem with their self. Anyway, stealing electricity is illegal, and that’s why she was convicted. This can affect for the decision of China to totally ban cryptomining, if we really want to have a technology like bitcoin and do cryptomining then we should do it in a good and legal way. She’s old already, i hope she can still have a life outside the jail.

Stealing electricity just make the cost of electric more expensive for everyone else that uses that power provider, so good it got stopped, but sending her to prison sounds like a hard punishment.
But it's great to read that she knew how to set up a minging farm to secure the bitcoin network. Many people 20 or even 40 years younger than her has no idea about how to set up a wallet and use bitcoins.

Maybe someone young from her family was really mining but when get caught they used grandma to tackle the lawsuit.
Saying because the lawsuit could be easy to tackle with an old lady over a young one, just wondering. Maybe the sentence is low for old persons.

It is possible to tackle the issue with an elderly person, but it is really a cruelty if that is the truth, even i do not think that a old person could mine bitcoin, i am not sure whether that old lady is a IT expert or into electronics, if not there is no way in hell she is able to set a mining farm on her own. The article says that she accepted that she mined bitcoin, i think that old lady is covering for someone else in the family.

There are two sides that we can take as a lesson from this, firstly this can be a motivation for young people who still do not understand about bitcoin and crypto currencies, an elderly grandmother understands how to mine bitcoin even though he does not think how much it should he paid while there were still many young people who were afraid to do so. Second, to mine bitcoin requires careful calculations, especially in terms of costs. not only because we are tempted by the high price of bitcoin and we don't pay attention to the costs that we have to spend on mining.

If he cant afford mining then he must do other bitcoin jobs instead .  poor granny .

They should have pardoned her and not let her go to prison because of her old age since he already refunds the electricity that the old lady has used, the temptation is really high to use the electricity illegally in mining Bitcoin, I've known a lot of people here in our country doing just that and they are not yet caught.

ignore the age and the "grandma" part and you can see how this is a very normal news not worth reading. someone was doing something illegal and got caught doing it. now they are paying the price of their wrongdoing with a fine and jail time. this is happening every day with people with all ages and backgrounds doing all kinds of illegal stuff and getting caught doing them, so it is not really something newsworthy!

Just getting attention that's how he manage to drag this title, would be an interesting to read but like what the previous post was said, if you removed the title it would be nothing an ordinary news about stealing from the government national power.

She's already 61 years old for sure she knew already how strict the government from her country, she's ready to take the consequence to get some penny.

A very rare case to see old people mining bitcoin, she really rocks this market. Anyway, China will punish that woman despite of her age, i just hope that her bitcoin is still safe and place on the safe wallet don’t let Chinese government to confiscate that because you work hard on that despite of the way you choose.

I think this story is creative, and this is an example that young people cannot be inferior to parents who are obsessed with bitcoin mining despite doing the wrong thing by stealing electricity.
I think the article about the story of the 61-year-old grandmother is funny and interesting and it all depends on their respective judgments.

Of course it's really cool to hear someone as old as her, involving herself in crypto. I mean we initially though that crypto is more of a millenial thingy, but this old lady prove otherwise.

And we also know that bitcoin mining is rampant in China, so maybe someone really teach her the ins and outs of making a mining rig. But I'm sure she has accomplices here, specially how to setup the hardware and the software and tapping into that (stealing) free electricity.

I don't understand the need to steal electricity for mining purposes. 80% or upwards of the mining expenses are reserved for the capital costs (mining rigs, cooling equipment, electricity circuit boards.etc). The electricity costs are not that high and represents only a small fraction of the overall expenses. And adding to it, the electricity price per KWh is very low in China.

Very rare news but this proves that age doesn't matter in crypto, this grandma is just to smart to be in the market early, and an average joe in crypto does not know how to mine bitcoin, but this Grandma is so awesome, however bad for him as he got caught and convicted.

Hahaha, that is a nice story to know Grandma was mining bitcoin, I am sure that he will not share how much his profit to the public.
I guess that in their country, they have a low-cost electricity fee, so they don't have to pay a high fee and that is why that grandma was trying to mining bitcoin.
Even if she should pay tax or else, she still gets the profit.

This is very bad of her and I will not encourage any one including my grandmother to do that type of thing. "stealing is stealing" no matter how we see it! She should however get lesser punishment instead of paying more than what she has stolen from chinese electricity. Since is about mining bitcoin people will go to any lengths to publish this conviction in other to prove or relate bitcoin with criminality.

as much as I love seeing old people adapting to new technologies I think the family just made her an escape goat since
if the suspect is younger the sentence could be a lot more severe.

I would believe this theory.  There is nothing left for the old lady to loss since she is already in her senior while a young if convicted will have a more severe penalty and his reputation and career will be tarnished.  Salute for the sacrifice of the old lady probably because of her love for her family, but shame on those who used her as escape goat.

They were lucky they only need to pay the amount they stole  plus some interest.  If that happen in my country,  the penalty will be much higher in terms of payment.  It will be calculated on how long they have been using their electricity, let us say they only steal electricity for about a month but their record shows that they have been using their legal connection for 10 years, the fee will be calculated prior to that connection history.

I really didn't expect this to happen. If done by young people or productive age it might be. But is a 61-year-old grandmother? Cool or wow? Or something sad?
Indeed, we know that many people are very enthusiastic about this one digital asset. Moreover, mining for some people is still very worthy.
Did the grandmother not think about the risks behind her actions? Or because he has done it for a long time so it has become a habit? We do not know the true condition of the grandmother.
Do we have to appreciate their courage and actions? Or sad about what was done?

there isn't that much room for surprise in my opinion and not much "cool" thing about this news either. there are so many people who jump into things they don't understand just because someone hypes them up and the greed usually blinds them to the illegality of their actions (stealing electricity) so eventually they have to pay for their mistakes.

Chinese laws can be tough and we can expect this grandma to go to jail, at least for a few months. And this is not the first incident. A few weeks back there was the news of a man sentenced to 3 years in jail for the same crime. According to the authorities, he stole electricity worth a few hundred thousand USD. In this case, I expect the quantum of punishment to be lower.

it doesn't make sense if it happens in my country, maybe 61 years is already quite old and I don't think it will go into jail but maybe only in a nursing home, so what surprised me is why a grandmother has the will to be part of technology this crypto currency, even though there are many out there young people who don't want to know this technology  ???

I really didn't expect this to happen. If done by young people or productive age it might be. But is a 61-year-old grandmother? Cool or wow? Or something sad?

there isn't that much room for surprise in my opinion and not much "cool" thing about this news either. there are so many people who jump into things they don't understand just because someone hypes them up and the greed usually blinds them to the illegality of their actions (stealing electricity) so eventually they have to pay for their mistakes.

If she were just not so old I wouldn't find it surprising so this old lady figured it out by herself how to set up nodes and steal electricity from someone's line. I'm almost sure someone maybe techie enough to have set it up  and let her guard  the machines. Its not just her. On the hand it makes sense why they steal electricity, it looks like they  are not profiting from it.

LOL, maybe she was too bored that is why she thinks to mine bitcoin and watch the daily progress and since she figured out that she does not earn profit due to consumption of electricity she now decided to steal electricity to earn profit without any expense. Unfortunately, she has been convicted and need to pay for the damages she had done plus suffering on the jail.

Since when is there a age restriction on being a criminal? Old people can also commit crimes but it is just less common, because they had loads of time to learn lessons in life to prevent incidents like this.

A lot of people commit crimes out of necessity and I cannot see if this granny was doing this to survive or if she just did this as an experiment.  ::) In any way, she falls under the same laws as anyone else.  :P

If she is not caught, I am sure that she will be the rich person in her city ;D

But after all, she still gets the profit from mining bitcoin, and I think she will continue to mining bitcoin because she knows that bitcoin can give her more money from the mining. I am curious what hardware she uses to mining bitcoin and where she was running the hardware.

This story is really sad because at this age such an old woman should be resting and not spending such an unpleasant times in jail but i also admire her courage though. China is one of the countries which have banned cryptocurrencies for a very long time and she ignored all these laws to set up her mining rig. That is sure some level of courage. Big ups old woman, and i hope the government grants you bail in no time. Stay safe!

I am not convinced that an old grandma understands how bitcoin mining works and she stole the electricity to mine bitcoin which is really weired, may be someone did that and she was caught instead. I am not a person who believes every media story and that is the reason i am skeptical about this news.
If that's true then it's really a cruel move done by the family, but if we think deeper then it's probably a smart move.

Because old persons can get BAIL easily and the young ones are not.
An easy and acceptable approach by defending lawyers could be "to consider her age and illness etc". It's not a killing case, it's just a case of stealing electricity.

I don't know how Chinese law works but in my place senior citizens can get bail for such a low crime. Though it needs some money to spend.  :D

Opportunity makes a thief. Do you know why this saying is true in her case? Electricity is basically unprotected. It's there, outside your home, available for anyone who knows how to connect 2 wires. She made a mistake and will face the consequences, but let's not make a criminal mastermind out of her. Millions of people steal electricity, it's not a big deal. In India it's as common as urinating on the pavement. I guess if she was planting weed or stealing electricity to do the laundry there wouldn't even be an article about her.

Didn't even bother reading it in details but you guys if you're not familiar with grandmothers from our part of the world, they be some of the nastiest people ever. Would do anything, for a son/daughter, probably that's what happened here. Maybe not much different from nans in any other part of the world maybe?

Reminds me, plenty of people bragging online these days about stealing electricity.

Too interesting but unfortunately, Grandma still did the illegal thing and has to pay for it. Seeing an old lady suffering from this mess, I hope it could be an eye opener for a miner not to do this anymore. If they can't afford to pay the electricity, stop mining. Lol. It is not profitable nowadays to mine crypto coins.

There is also a possibility that grandma just took the "crime" so that the sentence can be less if the real culprit can be sentenced. Anyway, this highlights that in China people are still interested to do business related to bitcoin and cryptocurrency in general but sadly the government had already closed this avenue for them by banning bitcoin in 2017 and likewise with mining this year. The Chinese government is using the concern on power consumption as the reason why bitcoin mining has to stop....whether people like it or not.

Well... this is a probability. A 61-year old female doesn't fit with our description of the typical Bitcoin user. And I never though about it. It looks like some of her relatives were stealing electricity for Bitcoin mining and when it was caught she came forward and admitted the crime. The charges are not going to last and most likely she will be acquitted.

If a young person is doing such a work of stealing electric power, he can also be pardoned. But if a 61-year-old experienced old woman has done such a thing then I think it's really shameful. If you look at it in other ways it is really a fun incident. Usually, we do not see any such incident. Anyway, many thanks to my grandmother for doing such a funny crime.

Well electricity today are expensive no matter where you are right now, if we're about to set up a mining rig it might took us months or years to recover our investments from the equipment to electricity and maintenance. A free electricity would make a big impact to recovering from the investment on equipment that's why a grandma finds a way to make a living but after all It's illegal.

If we really need to earn we might need to take risk too.

She must have done her profit calculation and discovered she will make little from mining bitcoin due to electricity cost.

Tang Qiuping, the convict, who only had Junior high school education will now face a four months jail term as well as pay a fine of 10,000 yuan (app. $1,450) for her crime.

Well, four months in jail is no spa resort, but you know what? In Stalin's Soviet Union she would get 25 years hard labor for such a crime. And I think even today if something similar happened in North Korea her sentence would be much more severe. Stealing national power(or any other) resources is no joke in Communist countries. So I am really pleasantly surprised by the legislative system of China today, and I'm glad that the brave grandma will not spend the rest her life in jail.

I would have never imagined a granny to mine Bitcoins on the top of that to steal it and then get arrested .

Ok folks we have the old generation pretty interested in Bitcoins too , to be honest his is quite shocking because they prefer the cash system and traditional things .

Also isn't mining banned in China ?
Ok 😂

It seems to me that the Chinese government should exonerate the mistress of that punishment, she is 61 years old, and even if she were defeating all the Chinese governments, they should give the woman more financial stability, since at that age people are more difficult qe can generate money, and is a lady who merce be respected.

I do not know how a government can be like that, well China is a communist, it is to be expected the treatment for their own people in that way, besides it was not even enough to satisfy their needs, I was just trying to pay for a service that for her should be free, You do not have to pay anything for having such an age.
I think it's an exaggeration for the government to treat the elderly like that.

With the punishment he got and considering the worth of the electricity she stole I think that the Chinese government gave her a lighter sentence than what it should be, if this was a normal adult she might be facing a harsher sentence which might be 1 year at least.  But I think the moral of the news here and finally someone confirms it in their article is....

Although it is legal to own bitcoin as well as send and receive the cryptocurrency in China, it is illegal to steal national power resources to operate bitcoin miners.

This is the truth and all of you saying Bitcoin is illegal in China have been mislead with wrong information. Cryptocurrency has been active in China before a lot of countries have started doing so.

I highly doubt she was the one mining the bitcoin as it takes some technical knowledge to be able to setup these miners and configure them. Do you think she was able to even lift up these miners up or down the stairs when they weight as much as a 12 kilos? Old granny would probably have a heart attack doing such work. She had to have one of her grandkids who was doing this living with her and she was the one caught because the residence where they found the equipment was in her name. And being granny she didnt want her grandkid going to jail so she took the blame.
What grandparents would do so to not have their grandkids lives ruined with breaking the law. :-[

And it happened in China, where electricity is cheaper than the rest of the world
Here in Brazil we have a lot of people who steals electricity and this affects the price of energy we pay, it's a shame
For a country with low electricity prices, why are there still people stealing it? In my country, the electricity price is quite high, so there are very few builders trying to exploit Bitcoin mining because you can lose money because of high electricity prices.

That is really funny. How does one steal electricity though? Like doesn't pay for it or lives in a shared unit?

Damn! this is very bad, fine she broke some rules and should be punished but they should also look at her age and reconsider giving her some other lenient punishments. I think it's too aggressive to punish an old woman in such a harsh way.

In fact, the justice sense the Chinese have(When not related to politics) is one reason why i feel a bit of admiration for them. They want to make examples out of the people who commit crimes and that is pretty effective in making others not follow the same path.

For example, in Venezuela if they something starts hunting the ones that steal electricity(Even when it is almost free and for that reason it works so bad), a lot of people would be arrested.

It's great to support the cause but please in legal ways.

it is said in the article that the grandma admitted that she already sold some of the profit she made through mining bitcoin.
as much as I love seeing old people adapting to new technologies I think the family just made her an escape goat since
if the suspect is younger the sentence could be a lot more severe.

"Her family members were reportedly regretful for her actions and offered to refund the 6500 yuan income, which is now paid"

She can extract mining information from different net sources, so it is more than plausible that she learned how to mine from them.

having watch or read a lot of Chinese news out of curiosity Chinese people(not all of them of course) have the tendency to blame
the young or old to escape punishment. your theory about that "she learned how to mine" is more far fetched than her family letting her
take the fall so the douche bag on her family escapes the punishment.

Why she had a prison sentence of 4 months and not a prison sentence converted into a fine? Are the laws of china so severe? In the article they do not say if she will appeal from the penalty or not

Stealing from the government has been always severely punished under communist regimes. Read about the "Law of Spikelets" from the link below

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Law_of_Spikelets

People were getting from 5 to 10 years of Gulag prison for just taking "as little as a handful of grain or spikelets left behind in the fields after the entire harvest was officially collected and counted". Just think of it: those spikelets would rot on the field if weren't picked up by the "thieves", and yet such a harsh punishment was given to them!

I think she's lucky getting just 4 months. Also, I agree with posters above saying that she acted as a cover for someone else, like her son or her grandson. And taking the obvious lie into account,
I am personally impressed with the softness of the sentence.

This grandma is a genius. But in China, 61-year-old people is not so old as in Eastern Europe. Asian people have more time on our planet :)
