Yes, every tokens are decided by it's unique contract address. They behave according to their individual rules but for transactions, require Ethereum as gas for traveling in the block chain. It can be store in their unique wallet that are compatible with erc20 , so you need to be very careful when sending or receiving any token from that erc20 has any mistake regard the wallet will lead to lost of your token. But there are dozens of coins in the market that can replace ETH. So, the ERC-20 is good, but it can easily replace.
