Wrong board to ask the question however I am answering here.
As a newbie you can not wear the signature. You need to be at least a Jr. Member to have the feature.

Thank you and welcome to the forum.

Or at least buy cooper member rank. That will be easier and quicker than getting 1 merit. Specially for a newcomer on the forum.

Get a copper membership instead since there are more spaces available to put your signature. It's equivalent to a member which requires 10 merits.

The signature space in size is equivalent to that of a Member rank, but the stakes for participating in a given campaign are not necessarily. I’ve just browsed through Bounties (Altcoins) (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=238.0) (first page) and found that the majority did not specify (*) if they accepted Copper Members and what rank they equated their signature to, a few explicitly stated that a Copper Member would be considered the same as a Member, but yet a couple more equated the Copper Member to a Jr. Member.

(*) If that is the case, ask the Bounty Manager how he will be considering a Copper Member.

I would advise you build your account instead of taking the short cut, 1merit isn't that hard to get that's if you're in search of the privilege of a jnr member rank. I'll only recommended buying a copper membership if you're interested in getting some privilege linked to member rank for business purposes.

Frankly speaking, it looks more to Member (if we talk about signatures). Because cooper members has not only "space in size is equivalent to that of a Member rank", but also can put links in signature (which Jr.Members cant).

There are two requirements you need to meet in order to rank up: Activity and Merit. Go here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=178608.0 and then here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2818350.0

First thread explains (among other things) what's "activity" and the "Required activity" you need to rank up, the second one especifies the "Required merit" for each rank.

Recent campaigns I've encountered in several bounty telegram groups already consider copper membership as equivalent to a member. They no longer specify because it's probably known to hunters now. But to be sure, yeah ask the BM.
