Mark Karpeles — the former CEO of the now-defunct bitcoin (BTC) exchange Mt. Gox — has revealed he will serve as the chief technology officer of a new Japan-registered blockchain technology firm. The news was reported by Japanese daily newspaper The Mainchi on June 5.

Speaking at the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan earlier today, Karpeles reportedly declared his intention to make the country a global leader in blockchain technology by undertaking his new role as CTO of the new Tokyo-based firm, Tristan Technologies Co.

maybe I'm wrong, but I've seen some comments from people who do not like this guy and I wonder how he gets out of his house and go to work on this new project even though there are a lot of people complaining about him. Imagine people who do not like him, how will they stay when they read this news

He is japan where they respect americans and anybody who look like tourists.
He can pretty much blend in there unnoticed. :(

Its their decision on letting this ,an to be the new CTO.I dont know why they do consider out this man if they are fully aware on its past issues.

Truth but it wont happen on the eyes of crypto community in Japan.

Tristan Technologies Co. is making a gamble with Mark Karpeles and let's see if this is really worth it all. i am sure they can see a good potential with the man considering his past experience with MtGox fiasco. Maybe they are thinking that he will instead use his bad experience and big lessons in managing this new platform. Okay, maybe we should give the man another chance to prove himself.

Of course he will stand out, only caucasian walking around head held high even though we know what's his involved on Mt. Gox 'heist'  ;). Maybe this is just a hype that Tristan Technologies Co. wanted to bring in their company. But crypto enthusiast knows Mark's background so I think this is a mistake on that company. And it will tarnish their reputation for hiring Mark because of his dark past. And if I'm a investor on that company, I won't feel comfortable though, having a person like Kerpeles who will wield so much power and influence as CTO.

Mt. Gox’s Karpeles: Press Rumors About My Blockchain Plans Are False

The former CEO of long-defunct Japanese cryptocurrency exchange Mt. Gox denied press claims he is returning to blockchain in comments to Cointelegraph on June 7.

Mark Karpeles, whom a judge acquitted of embezzlement in March and is currently appealing a lesser conviction of data manipulation, says his activities with Tristan Technologies will not involve the cryptocurrency sector.

Responding, Karpeles told Cointelegraph:

“I believe I've been quite clear during the press conference and I'm not sure how this got reported wrong, and been even asked if I wouldn't consider returning to the crypto space (to which I replied I had no plan to for now).”

He added that “the goal to try to bring back Japan near the top of the IT industry is indeed there”

Reports about his involvement at Tristan and its sphere of operation also received clarification, with Karpeles underlining that “it is not a new company, it is not a blockchain company.”

“Tristan Technologies isn't exactly a startup per se, since the company has been up and running for years and is now self sufficient. We focus on IT solutions, mostly cloud-based, and offer services such as a Google Drive/Dropbox replacement [...] (among other things),” he noted.

Ok at least you have cleared everything up because it really doesn't make any sense for a company to really hire personalities that has a shady past like Mark Karpeles to even be a CTO of a big company in Japan. As much as we wanted to think that the Mt. Gox is all over, it's still going to haunt the crypto sphere and people rarely forget who's involved on that heist.

I don't know why this guy (Mark Karpeles) is not behind bars. He ruined the lives of tens of thousands of people, when Mt Gox went down. Dozens of individuals committed suicide after their life savings were stolen. Till now the identity of the Mt Gox hacker has not been established. But it is clear that Karpeles knew about the ongoing robbery for a very long time.
