If you store coins in online wallets and if the site disappears in a sudden one day, you will lose everything.

Are you scared?

Nothing needs to be feared in crypto, because everything we do must have risks. Because the possibility that happens a little if we save coins in the wallet online and at one time the site will disappear, actually I am not afraid because there is no way that could happen.

In my case, these are ERC20 tokens. The sites that display this are myetherwallet and etherscan and the like. If these sites disappear, it will no longer matter what I have, since the all cryptocurrencies will be in a deep hole (_*_) ;D.

An other coins in my local wallets, which also does not provide security in case the project site disappears.

Well i don't store my assets in an online wallets. For any Erc20 assets i think imtoken, Trust are better wallets to secure funds. Even keeping your funds in an exchange is not advisable.  So these wallets are safe.

I think the OP has understood now. Maybe he meant "IF IT HAPPENED". In fact, it is not recommended to store our assets competed online. Because it is very risky to lose. And you suggest storing a cellphone with a private key, that is a good suggestion.

This crypto ecosystems is a very delicate thing to use and also a very smart way to get your self set for smart decision as the goal is to have power over your funds and in a situation that you misuse the secret then you are gone in a short time.

Its never advice to store your coin in an online wallet especially the new ones that are just getting to the industry which is a very delicate one to use , storing your coins or token in a wallet you can control by having your passphrase or private key is much better .

If it is an altcoin and web wallet official, i wouldn't mind because it is just a scam and even you have that coins in your own wallet, tokens will be there but they will worth nothing so not a big deal.

If it is bitcoin or one of the biggest cryptocurrencies that won't come out scam (like stellar ethereum), i always use official wallet and wallets give me private keys (like myetherwallet).

So i am not scared at all.
If you don't want to scare too, only use official wallets and don't trust 3rd party service providers.

You have to be scare because its your money and you worked for that money. Its not advisable to use online wallet, your decision will matter on this. If you put the money on the online wallet most especially on the exchanges then you will cry if that wallet or an exchange leave the market, let's learn from what happened to Cryptopia Exchange.

I advice to have at least one hard wallet, don't risk everything just use your $100 or less to buy a hard wallet and you can have good secured wallet.

If the site disappears and we lose track, it means losing everything. Afraid, but I don't expect that. But the most worrying thing is hacking. We better all need to be more anticipated with all the possibilities that will occur, so that we do not become victims or lose assets in an online wallet. Thank you so much.

when you are handing over your most important things which you should have kept private to others to keep for you, then you should already expect things like this to happen. being scared or surprised later on is just dumb and showing they didn't think ahead.
if you don't like it then don't use web wallets.

It is really risky storing your cryptos in unknown online wallet site, that site could disappears anytime you really lose everything, better to store a good reputation online wallet like MEW if your crypto is a ERC20 token.

One sweet thing about Cryptocurrencies and decentralisation is that even if the particular website you used suddenly disappears, everything is stored in the chain and you can simply import that your wallet to another wallet with your private key or mnemonic phrase, have you wondered how it's possible to open a MEW wallet and be able to import it to imtoken app.

By online wallet you mean web wallet I guess? Storing funds in web wallet and site goes down doesn't mean you've lost everything, especially when there is private key or keystore. There are other similar wallet developed where you can import. Unless you are referring to a scam project.

Who told you the possibility is little. please try and research before you make ill-informed information. Online wallet do not backup your private key. If you store your coin in an online wallet and the site disappear that is the end of everything you hold because you can not recover your coin again and that is the major reason why we always advice crypto trader not to put huge amount of their coin in an online wallet. Even recently, one of the top executive of binance make reference to this that its not advisable to keep huge crypto in an online trading platform.  many people put their coin on coinbase becuase they believe if coinbase goes offline, they can legally track them down. if you put your coin in an online wallet that are new and have not gather more credibility, you are on your own.

Are you scared?

People ought to be wary of online wallets and small exchanges. This is why only you should have access to your private key, and if using an exchange your risk of loss is reduced with a larger, well-established exchange.

Of course, I am scared, and that is why we need to save in another wallet, and it's better in other hardware. Don't use the online wallet or the exchanges to save all of your coins because that will not be advisable, and you know the risk. We need to prevent the worst scenario that might happen in the future so we can anticipate before it happens.

I wouldn't recommend you to store your funds in an online wallet for a long time. Not because the site could disappear anytime. I think there is still a very low chance that that site will disappear. But in my case, I put my funds on a site that there is the lowest chance of disappearing. Also, your wallet can also get hacked so better take them out even in myetherwallet and don't put it there for a long time.

Why the heck you have to store your coin to an online wallet which is controlled by another party? This is why crypto currency has been developed, no third party in between. Better you must have stored in your own client wallet.

Online wallets are vulnerable to hacks and it is worst way to throw away the holdings. Offline security is second to none feature of crypto investors but small volume traders prefer to hold it in the exchanges or in online wallets which opens a gate for such cases.

I don't think it is wise to store coin on online wallets esp those that hold coins on peoples behalf. There are some that lets you control your private keys/seeds.  If something bad happens to the company your coins still remain with you as long as you have your private keys

This is also incorrect. Any online (hot) wallet worth their weight in salt will back up this information. That doesn't mean they'll give it to you, but in order to spend your funds (or let you spend them) they definitely need it.

Are you scared?

There are several case with different reaction.

1.  If I have the private key and the site owner does not store private key on his server then I won't worry at all.
2.  If I have the private key but the site owner do store all the information on the server then this will get me worried.
3.  If I do not have a private key and just a user log in info on that site, the thought of that site disapperaing is frightening thus I will never use this kind of wallet to store my coins in a long term except when I am trading or doing some important transactions that needed this kind of service.

But usually the average online wallets have conditions that only users when they first make a wallet can know the Private Key. I also haven't found anything other than that.
The third case mostly happened when we use crypto exchange/market.

I'm always worried that the exchanges I trade on will "suddenly go down" so I try and minimize the amount of capital stored there. If I happen to do well and my account grows significantly in size, I will withdraw a portion to my core wallet for safe keeping.

The rest of my coins stay in cold storage offline.

if you had a huge sum of coin on the site you will know that you have to be scared,  the possibility of it happening in an account you control the private Key is very slim,  only if you expose your private key to someone else,  so someone gat to be scared if he has huge amount there

Don't store your tokens or coins in unknown online wallets. Better use Mew or Metamask because they are safe and reliable. I have been using Mew and majority of tokens are in my Mew wallet and some are in Metamask. In using online wallets you need to bookmarks the sites so that you don't have to be a victim of phishing attacks. And using antivirus with anti-spyware would also help. I'm using Eset mobile security for my smartphone and so far never had experience of getting compromised.

It is a natural for someone to get scared when they save funds in an online wallet and its website is offline in fact the higher the funds in the wallet the higher the level of fear ad anxiety to the person.

Myetherwallet or other sites like Mycrypto are only 'gateways' to your erc20 wallet dude. Since you own your private key nobody can take your assets. No deep hole to be afraid of  ;)

If you can afford it, best way to protect your well loved tokens is purchase a hard wallet (Ledger, Trezor...). No so much expensive these days and so convenient :)

Right from day one, I have always known that online wallets are easily prone to hack. The best option is paper wallet, because you can carry out transaction without necessarily connecting to the internet.
The rate at which scam cases are being treated, is quite alarming.

This is the reason why as much as possible, store your coins in your own wallets. Even if the site has already established its name in the industry, still you should not left your money in the hands of anyone. Because you'll never know what will happen, the site disappears or that site has been hacked. You can't blame the owner but your self on this regard. That scenario is very possible to happen nowadays. Even famous exchanges are victim of hacking incidents.

I know this can happen and I don't store my coins online. I don't even keep them on exchanges for more than a day or two. If I can't find a good trade I take my coins off the exchange. The only thing that I tend to keep there is fiat money because it will be rather easy to prove how much fiat I had there and what its value was if something happens with the site. I also don't trade on smaller exchanges and I never send all my money there.

A desktop wallet or hardware wallet is the best.

You may trust the online wallet that you use or the exchange that you use but as long as they won't give you the private key, be aware that everything can turn into dust if you are into that kind of situation.

Of course everyone will be worried and scared specially if all of our Crypto assets was in their keeping but this is normal as this is already part of the risks that will need to face therefore i suggest to store your assets in an offline wallet like Nano Ledger S which is 100% safe specially if huge asset is involved.

Online wallets are always risky. Always choose wallets where you own the private keys. Though the advantage of online wallet is ease of access and use. If you choose trusted online wallets like Coinbase, then it shouldn't be a big problem. But choosing a new company for online wallet is not a good choice unless it is tried and tested by veterans.

That's why we need to using the wallet with backup options.
Online ETH wallet like myetherwallet is already forcing the users to safe the private key from the beginning.
With this strategy, myetherwallet is not responsible if one day the site is gone because server done or something bad happening.

Since you already have phobia for this, or since your instinct is telling you something regarding that, don’t you think you should move your coin into desktop wallet where you can have your private keys and to me, I think it is safer for me to use, I have never thought of saving my coin on an online wallet, because the company in charge of maintaining the wallet might be active now, and probably go bankrupt tomorrow and decide to close down.

Looks at how many people have lost their investment in cryptopia, and this exchange use to have full trust of people, but eventually when they saw problem they ever envisage, they ended up collapsing with client’s money.

If the online wallet is open source and it was verified that the private keys cannot and will not be stored or compromised, I'm ok with it, I can use other wallets, online or desktop as long as I still have my keys on me, there was a time in the past thet Myetherwallet was offline but no wallets are compromised unless it was hacked.

Do I call It nonchalant attitude, or do I say that some investors are being hypnotized by these online wallet providers? Because I don’t see reason why any investor will in its clear eyes just choose to hold his or her coins on an online wallet when they know fully well of the risk involved.

Online wallet are the worst place you can keep an investment and if anything happens to them now, I am not sure they have any means of refunding their users, which is why some of them that have failed will just pack up and leave without ever putting the investment holders into consideration.

There are different types of online wallet, I only know that myetherwallet is open source, client-side browser based Ethereum wallet and private key is keep by user. I won't let it happen because most of my crypto assets is store on offline wallet, only keep some amount on exchanges for trading.

If you store coins in online wallets and if the site disappears in a sudden one day, you will lose everything.

Are you scared?

not afraid at all while I use an online wallet that is referenced directly from the official website. But if I save my coins in an online wallet that has negative feedback, it is clear that I will be afraid because I might lose money.

But I think now people here are smart in choosing an online wallet, of course they use a referral wallet from the official website of their coins and if they continue to lose money then the coin developer must be responsible.

It is always bad idea to store your coins online. It is not only because you don't have full control of your private keys or seeds, but also risks of sites' shutting down anytime. I don't see strongly convincing reasons to use hardware wallets. Of course, if you want to use hardware wallets, you can do it because it provides you safe storage method. However, if you don't have enough budget to buy hardware wallets, just learn how to secure your coins with available wallets for iOS or Windows that officially provides by developers. Setting up strong password for your wallets, save your private keys (seeds) safely in different locations and prevent damages from water, fire, and so on. Then, you will be fine, even without hardware wallets

Users should be careful of the type of wallets they use to store their coins. I won't advise anyone to store his or her coin in an online wallet, I won't even trust them in the first place.

This is not something it happens in the past because of server update, but if the site was created in open source code and coders have proven that it is safe to use the site and your key will not be stored, then we have nothing to worry about, we just use other online or desktop wallet as long as we have the private key we have control of our coins.

Ummmmm, that's not necessarily the case.
Your coins never truly disappear.
In fact, your coins aren't even really coins.
It's all just numbers on the blockchain.

The blockchain is open for anyone to see and use.
But specific numbers (your coins) at addresses on the blockchain can't be moved unless you have the private key to that address.

It's important to know this because the truth about wallets, is that they are only graphic user interfaces.
You technically don't need it to access your coins.
So if your wallet was an online one, and the site disappears, you are still ok as long as you have sole access to your keys.
Watch some youtube videos on how to look at a blockchain explorer, you will be able to see if your coins are still on the blockchain.

You mean exchanges? Because there are a few wallets which dont gave you a private key, other are giving you a private key when you register to them, so if they dissapear, you can go to another wallet, export private key and get acess to your wallet. Online wallet is just a shell, your funds storing in blockchain, not in online wallet.

If that is an online wallet or the exchanges, I still worried because we don't know how they can protect our account. I heard many exchanges get hacked by the hacker, and it makes the customer lost their coins, and some exchanges cannot replace the lost coins. I know that is sad, but we cannot do anything except we save the coin in a separate wallet.

Even if the wallet dissappears you can import the coins into other wallet when you have private keys but if you are not having any private keys then you lost your funds.

But normally this happens with exchanges not with wallets so don't tore any coins if you are not controlling the private keys.

anyway why choose untrusted wallet services, because there are many trusted services that provide free wallets.

That is why it is important that we create account at reputed wallets and websites only and also always only create a wallet and store our coins at a wallet that also offers us private keys to the wallet so in case of that wallet closing we can still import our wallet in another private key option wallet and reduce our risk.

Say you have a coin like powerledger.  You keep it on binance... an exchange.  You like to put it in own wallet my powerledger does not have own wallet.  I read you have to use myetherwallet.  And that is online wallet.  Also i read you can use it with myetherwallet and nano ledger s.  So if something happens to myetherwallet, what happens to your powerledger then?  Well you have it connected with the nano ledger s.  But if something happens to myetherwallet, what happens?

If you put your coins on a online wallet that's plain stupidity ,online wallets have no backups or private keys, its control by who ever owns the website don't even try it or you lose your coins
No back ups or private keys? I don't think you have the right information about online wallets like MEW for example. You control seed pharases, private keys, json file etc. You can still access your MEW address even if the site is down by importing it thru IMToken.

Everyone are scared of course specially if involves huge amount of cryptos but to minimize the risks never put your assets in exchanges wallet or only used the most trusted site like myetherwallet.com for ERC20 coins as this site will ensure to avoid mistakes because their reputation is at stake. You may use Nano Ledger S as an offline wallet that although expensive but its worth it specially huge assets are concern.

I think that will makes people panic because they have their coins in that site. That is why you don't need to store all of your coins online because you can save it in the hardware which you can buy at a cheap price. It is a risk to store your coins in online because you never know how long the website can running and give the service. So when you want to store the coins on the website, you need to think about the other solution which will give you safety on storing the coins, and you should choose with the offline wallet.

Nobody, with at least some knowledge about crypto-currencies, would hold coins in some wallet without private keys.
If you don`t have private keys, you don`t own coins. It`s something anyone needs to learn before investing in crypto-currencies.
Mostly, people think about the profit and how to make money, safety is on second or third place. People start to think about the safety
only after they lose coins.

Never store your coins in a wallet you have not a private key to, It will be very deadly when such wallet provider has issues. And always check too if the private keys can be successfully imported to other wallets, this is very key, otherwise, just transfer off your asset to a better wallet and delete the troubled wallet.

Those selections of wallets are already been there for quite some time, but it's still not advisable to place your money without your full control, OP's needs to learn more about crypto so when he's going to invest huge amount of money he'll be able to designate a good hardware wallet to keep his investment and be sure to have the full access and control of his money.

When it comes to keeping money in a wallet for a long term project, I think the best wallets to ever keep ones fund should strictly any one that can provide a private key that the investor can use to personally control his account at any time. Sometimes, the issue with the online wallets is not because they will disappear, but because hackers could have control or access into the user’s account and steal fund from such wallet, so it is very necessary for one to personally safeguard ones account, in which the best way to do so is just to own a wallet with private keys, otherwise hardware would just do best, most especially people that have extremely large investment in any of the cryptocurrency they are holding.

Yes, this can happen. It can make you lose all your coins. That's why you should use a wallet where you have access to your private keys.
But the worst is the disappearing of the coin. Having a coin in your own wallet doesn't protect you from this. I have witness some disappearing of coins like WhaleCoin.
And some airdrops have never been listed on an exchange and just disappeared.

Yes I'm scared if I lost everything I hold into it that's why when I'm storing my coins into wallet I always look for the private key so that I can be able to access it anytime in it's supported wallets and also I am the only one responsible for it's security as I have the only access into it by the use of private keys.
Even online wallets provide you private keys, you should know that you are not a single person who have private keys for your online wallets. Sites and owners of those sites own your private keys too. Consequently, what if they are bad guys and plan to steal your money? If they are, they plan, your money will be stolen.

Well, it actually depends what kind of online wallet it is.
If the coin is on a smart contract platform like Eos or Eth, then even if their site disappears, your coins aren't lost.
If it is its own blockchain, then chances are your coin isn't lost either.

You see, with crypto and wallets, your coins are never in the "wallet" or on a website or anything.
It is all numbers on the blockchain.
Online wallets are just graphical interfaces created to make it easier to interact with the blockchain.
So if the graphical interface disappears, as long as the blockchain is still functioning, your coins aren't lost.

Most wallets have their own keys. What you need to do is keep it safe. And people often use not just a single wallet, they will use a combination of hot wallets and cold wallets.

I belive the poster was talking about online wallets like sites having their own blockchain and wallet not wallets like Myether, Imtoken and the rest. Online wallet is very risky cos once the site developers decide to pack up, one's assets are gone. It's always advised to be safe and store funds in trusted wallet.

Official wallets from projects which are very easy to get from their websites, githubs, ANN threads. We can not deny the fact that with new born projects, there are risks to download and install their wallets, if you don't have skills to scan and check potential threats before installing. Scam projects can add hidden threats into their wallets and will compromise your computers later.

because now most wallets use privatekey / seed / mnemonic to enter. and many online wallets that support it, so I'm not afraid, but if I keep a wallet that is reserved for one type of coin, for example nem and I have a lot of nem and there is no alternative wallet I will be very scared

There are some online wallets (web wallets) which make use of private key, mnemonic phrase or keystore and can be imported in other similar wallets especially for ERC20 tokens.  So it depends on the web wallet you are referring to.  A reasonable person won't just store coins in just any web wallet he or she comes across.

Keeping coins on online wallets is pretty foolish. If you forget the password or the site got hacked or maybe the owner of the site can do the favor to you and you will lose everything. So, it'll be safer if we kept coins on mobile wallets rather than online wallets.

Using online wallet is very risky and people should know about that. Many people in this market use online wallet cause they don't have to take care of private key they are easily accessible. But the risk factor is very high when you keep your coin in this kindbof wallets. I always prefer of you have some extra money go for some hardware wallet if even that is not possible for you then atleast use some official or official recommend wallets. This market is full of volatility and risk. And taking some extra risk is not good for me. That's why I never go for online wallets.

Online wallet is not very trusted in my opinion. I know there is many online wallet which have been running for a long time but their is no guarantee. Not even online wallet every wallet which don't give you private keys or even acces to your wallet cahain is not good. Hardware wallets are most suggested wallet for any kind of holding. If you can't afford bthat use any other wallet wich give fully access to the wallet your key phrase everything. I never used online wallet and I would never be.

Why not get a mobile wallets and download it, and make use of it,  instead of making use of online wallets that can get away with your fund at any given time

I use web wallets to store some coins but I still have my private keys so anytime site is not accessible I can equally use app. Well, it depends on the online wallet you refer to, the ones I use I can still import to app when offline.

Any sane person would never store huge amount of coins in an online wallet. No matter how much "secure" they claim they are, there is always a chance of them getting hacked. Again, there is also equal possibility of them scamming you your coins and just running away with your wallet. As long as you don't have access to your private keys, the coins are never your. Again, if someone else also has access to your private keys, then there is always a high chance of losing your coins. The sight may disappear, so use online wallets at your own risk/

There are 2 diffrent online wallets.
Cloud wallets or custody wallets - wallets that do not provide you private key, you are not a real owner.
HD wallet - you access to your funds with a private key.
If cloud wallet disappear, you have a real problem  :D.

I have never heard of this incident as a solution, do we have to keep it in the wallet offline?  is there an offline wallet that supports all tokens and altcoin.  continue the risks that can be obtained from the use
Not neccesary, just keep your main money in offline wallet, like in the form of btc if the amount is so much. Clearly I never hear offline wallet that support so much altcoins, basically we need online wallet to do that for us.

If you store coins in online wallets and if the site disappears in a sudden one day, you will lose everything.

Are you scared?

Online wallets equally have recovery phrases or mnemonics which you can use to log into a different compatible wallet. However, the best place to store your digital assets is offline on trezor or ledger but if they are too expensive for you, go for mobile wallets such Enjin, imtoken or trust wallet

yeah, but i just choose online wallet that they give us the private key, so if someday the site are hacked or down we can still acces our money from another wallet because we have the private key, but i'm prefer to used desktop wallet than online web based wallet for security reason

1) If you are using the online wallets as a middle wallet for transferring to exchanges and back, it is ok not to concern about the security of coins which will stay there for days.
2) If you have the intention to hold the coins for a long time or you don't want to touch till the bull run then it is time to check the hardware wallet sites. I definitely recommend trying the Trezor(Black and bigger screen) and Keepkey. Both hardware wallets are the safest considering the cryptocurrency security standard norms.

Basically, funds should be kept off-line. That's why we have a type of cold wallets. Online wallets are risky as hot wallets. If coins already listed on good exchanges, why not store your coins on those reliable exchanges? It is much better than storing them on online wallets. However, storing coins directly on exchanges is still not a best option, but you can use it as alternative for online wallets. And you should remember to choose reliable exchanges, only.

At this stage, it is not advisable to store any coin in an online wallet except for a particular coin that has such as the only form of storage at that time, a lot of things could happen to it, either the site disappears or attacked by phising sites. This is synonymous to keeping funds in exchanges, it very risky
