European Championship for under 21 years old players is starting in just few days. I decided to open a topic so we can discuss it a bit in these hard times without league football.

To make things a bit more interesting I also created a pool on Superbru page. This one is free entry and no rewards unless I get some sponsors. This is a short competition with only best 12 teams in Europe. We should see some great football and the games will be at more friendly times for us Europeans than Copa America. I joined the pool already, and I'm not sure which team I'll be backing for the tournament, I guess I'll have to review each teams squad list before making a decision...

I just realized Moise Kean would be featuring for the Italian side, I love that kid for real, and I'll be following him a lot during this tournament.

I also signed up on this pool. I don't expect many players there, but still, I hope it will be fun.
All groups looks very tough, because only 12 best teams qualified to championship. Looking at odds, Italy, England, Germany Spain and France are favorites with odss between 5 and 6. But it's very difficult predict something here, only Romania looks like obvious underdogs without any chances to win.
I looked at squads and I surprised to see Luka Jovic name. I thought he is already playing for Serbia national team already and U21 is too low level for him :D

For most national teams, It's about letting players garner as much experience as they can in competitions like this, It doesn't matter if they are in the first team already so far there's no fixture for the senior squad which are scheduled for the duration of the competition.

It depends a little bit on player character as well. I hate when players think they have outgrown U21 squad. We had a situation like that with defender Caleta-Car. He has became a part of the main Croatia squad and when he received invitation to play for U21 he responded that he is unable because he already booked a holiday on Maldives  ???

I want to join but it's really very difficult to predict which country will be the strong candidate who won. If for seniors, we already know which countries are good. But for this U21, I don't know not even knowing the names of players in a country. So it is very difficult to determine whose country is strong.

That is easy, they are all strong. Quolifying is really difficult for these tournaments and all teams which made it deserved it for sure.

This is free pool so it doesn't cost you anything to join. Good way to try your predicting abilities and for us to maybe create prediction adiction in order to have more participants in paying pools as well.

Groups are pretty even, it will be a tough one.

I accepted all of you into the pool. That is now 5 of us in total, with 3 of us from Croatia. Damn, bitcointalk will have to move gambling section under Croatian local board soon  ;D

For those of you who are using Superbru for the first time, you can immediately pick results and you can change them all the way until the match starts. Just make sure not to lock the results. Once you lock the results your choice is final and you can see other people predictions. There is no need to lock the score at any time. This is done automatically once the match starts.

Thanks for the thread Trofo... I actually used to really follow the World Youth Cup (ever since they stopped by my tiny hometown in 1997!) and then have been betting on the U20s (as it's now known), so I bet there are lots of players in EURO U21.

Confusing with all these different formats but I'll have a look and see just how familiar some faces are before even attempting to participate here =)

And yeah, why are there so many Croatians heh. I need to find a countryman... haven't even found 1 on this forum but I know they're hiding.

Bump and a reminder that the games start later today so put your picks in if you haven't already. We should have an excellent game today between Italy and Spain which could have been a game worthy of tournament final.

I am really interested to see how far the Italians will go in this tournament. They have many young players who have already featured for their Senior team and play important roles in their clubs. Like Chieasa or Kean in attack. Barella, Zaniolo, Pellegrini in midfield and Mancini in defence.
Considering that the Italians are the host nation I can see them fight for a place in the 1/2 finals. 

I am sure they will at least reach the quarter finals. The hosting team is often way above their level (greece at the euro 2004 for example), additionally, a lot of italian team members already play a key role at their current clubs. Very interesting euro in my opinion!

I also think the same thing because sometimes the junior national team cannot be equated with the senior national team, if the one playing is a senior player I can predict maybe without reading the news.

Last nights display was actually quite unsatisfactory despite the 3:1 win. Good result but the quality of their play wasn't that good. Spain dictated the tempo most of the match. They got the lead as well. Chiesa was great for the Italians and they can consider themselves pretty lucky with a win from this match. Moise Kean didn't create much. He didn't receive a single useful ball from his midfielders and was substituted one hour into the match. 

Ya, was kinda unsatisfactory despite the win. I am very looking forward to Serbia vs Austria today, especially Serbia is very strong, wouldnt surprise me if they win the group

Seriously doubt it. Serbia is strong but Germany is out of charts. They have won the competition 2 years ago and they still have 4-5 players from that team with 2 more years of experience and training under their belt.

Edit. Serbia loosing against Austria and I am happy to report that I have found perfect streaming for this tournament. If you need it, try uefa.tv you need to register (only Email) and it is free. Working perfectly in HD quality for me. Should have all the games.

Unbelievable, wouldnt have expected this. Glad that I didnt wag any money at those games so far, would ve lost almost every game ;) What are your thoughts about the Austrian team? Have to admit that they really suprise me, very strong gameplay so far.

I expected the Serbia to better side, but they were totally outplayed today, I didn't expect such a bad performance from them, They couldn't even get a single shot on goal for the entire match.

If I was going to wager on the game, I'd have lost too because I would have bet on Over 2.5 goals

Serbia was awful today, they made so many mistakes in their own half that it is a wonder they didn't lose 5:0. If they play like this in the next game vs. Germany they will lose badly but knowing Balkan mentality I am expecting a much better performance from them. The problem is that even their best performance will likely not be enough to take the points from Germany.

They'll definitely need to put on their best performance to steal a point against Germany, maybe they'll reflect on their loss today and make proper adjustments before their next game.

Germany on the other hand were brilliant today, It was expected an win but, still they should be commended for putting up a great show.

That is the problem with Balkan teams,they offer no constant playing and against strong teams like Germany they suffer the feeling of inferiority.I think against Germany they will suffer a bad defeat with a big goal difference.I am afraid that the pragmatic play of Germany can make them lose with a tenistic result.

Don't forget, only winner of the groups and one best runner up are progressing to the knockout stage so if you lose the game you are pretty much out of the tournament. These youth competitions are really tough.

Croatia started the match very badly and found themselves trailing by 2 goals. In the meantime we started to play a bit better and got one goal back. Should be a good second half.

Damn, it's good that this pool is free and we are playing just for fun. Otherwise I just would lose money on this torunament. Romania just won against Croatia 4:1. I didn't wtched the game, and I'm really surprised about result. I thought that Romania is wekaest team in the tournament.
England - France starting soon, it should be great game and Ihope I will get my first points :D

The U21 Tournament is gradually becoming the game of the underdogs.

I had England where in the lead for the most of the game but France missed to penalties and were still able to win the match 2-1 with two late goals
Although had were down to 10 men with about 30 minutes left on the clock.

A lot of people in the pool predicted the match to be draw, I would have been at the bottom of the table If te game had ended with a 1 - 1 draw.

I read somewhere in the last few days that according to the Italian National Broadcaster RAI more people watched the U21 Italy - Spain match than the Senior match of Italy - Greece in the UEFA qualifying tournament. Can't seem to remember where I saw this.

This shows that expectations are high in Italy for the Azzurrini.

2 - 1 win for Spain means their campaign is back on track after their defeat against Italy, meanwhile, Belgium are approcaing an early exit from the tournament, Except if they could fight to be one of the third best placed teams, I doubt chances of that happening anyways because their performance today were totally bad, Spain don't look flawless either.

You got that wrong. In this tournament only first placed teams advance trough to knockout stages + one best runner up (4 in total, semi finals). Meaning Belgium is out for sure and Spain is doubtful even if they win next game.

That means it's must win for Italy tonight too, their game against Spain was top notch despite going behind, I'll be expecting a really through encounter between, match is 13 minutes gone already, an even match so far.

Yes, It was just 3 of us with the correct score of Spain vs Belgum, but no one got the correct score of Italy vs Poland, not even the correct prediction. No one could have anticipated Italy would lose after the superb dispaly against Spain in game 1.

The leaderboard is still pretty close, It's only a matter of one correct score then another leader would emerge.

Romania made another sensation by beating England 4:2. I considered them as the weakest team of the tournament, but now they will fight against France for the first place in group.
Meanwhile Croatia and Serbia are the biggest disappointment of this tournament...

You've said it all but, If your think Croatia and Serbia are the biggest disappointment what were your expectations for England ? They were one the teams I had high expectations for, but they haven't even secured a win yet.

Yeah, England obviously is also worth to mention. But from what I saw, England looks promising despite these results. Silly mistakes of defenders and squad selection is the reasons why they failed. While Croatia and Serbia were overhyped too much.

Aidy Boothroyd is to be blamed for England’s debacle he kept their best player on the bench, I’m referring to Abraham who scored that brilliant goal. The sack is coming for Aidy who’ll have to answer to England fans for his decisions. There’s no doubt that England defenders made silly mistakes, but in the end I feel their tactics were poor hence they lost.

I hope some of you managed to earn some money on France - Romania match. Both teams were certain to go trough with a draw. I managed to catch the odds @2.2 for the draw and later I saw the odds dropped as low as 1.6. Didn't watch the match but the fact that both teams combined didn't manage to have a single shot on target should tell you enough about the nature of that game. Poor supporters who payed for the ticket and Italy.

I didn't thought about it before the game. I didn't even put goals under on this game :/. And yeah, it was shitty match, both teams just didn't wanted to win. Not much action in this game...
What are your thoughts about semifinals, guys? Germany is favorites on the paper, but after amazing performance in group stage it would be stupid to understimate Romania. And in Spain - France game, I think it's impossible to predict something there.

I'm looking at a Germany vs Spain for the finals, I don't how they did it but Spain has found themselves back as a contender after their shaky start, If IIRC @Trofo also doubted their chances of making it out of the group stages, but here they are.

Germany vs Romania is another match, Germany should be wary of the threats Romania can pose, they were unbeaten as well in the group stages, And they have a combined second best scoring record in the group stages, and an upset is nothing but possible.

At the beginning of the tournament I thought Germany would dominate all of its competitors but they didnt dominate neither Denmark nor Austria at the group stages, Austria even had the chance to beat em. So I dont think its a safe bet that they will win the Euro.

Austria and Germany when they play together it feels like it is a derby in international level so in this game all the three results are acceptable.I agree that Germany was the favourite in the beginning but the facts have shown that they can be beaten.Still I believe that they have the highest chances to win the Euro and if the odd is good I would definitely bet on them.

Romania are leading at halftime, Germany took the lead just after 21 mintues, but it's been all Romania since and they turned the tie around just before the break.

It's still anyone's game for now but then, Romania have all the advantage to advance to the final now.

Not any more. It is already 2:2 and Germany just had a good oportunuty to take the lead again. This one is great fun to watch, as was expected from 2 teams that scored most goals in this tournament.

Wow! What a game that was congratulations to Germany, They dominated the 2nd half and deserved their victory, but Romania deserves some credit for their performance too.

I think it will be safe to admit they're going to win the tournament regardless of which team they face in the final, be it France or Spain.

Congrats first of all to the Romanian team, they has a great potential and those players will definitely help the A Romanian squad in the next European/World championships
Germany will have to play against Spain more defensive to win the final, but I think they can do it  8)

Congratulations to Spain as they are the 2019 U21 Champions after defeating Germany 2 - 1, It's quite amazing that they performed poorly in the first game and made people doubted their chances of making it through the group stage only for them to come as far as lifting the trophy.


It was a very short  competition, I had forgotten it was just group stages and semi finals, but It was interesting anyways.

I watched the game yesterday and the truth is that Spain dominated the game and deserved the win,they created more chances,attacked almost all the time and hit the post during the game beside scoring goals.

Germany played poorly yesterday night and I don't know the reason for that,may be Spain was too strong but I fancied Germany to win yesterday game.

Yeah, it was a short competition but a sweet one. I watched almost all the games and saw some really great football. Not to mention some future stars in the making. Dani Ceballos really impressed me with his composure on the ball and I am expecting him to get more and more minutes in Real Madrid. Olmo was great as well and he will probably break all Croatian league transfer records this summer.

Spain was solid yesterday and they totally deserved the trophy. I feel that Firpo has a great future ahead, he was my favorite player in the tournament. I am happy to see that Spanish players will conquer the European football in the next years.

Definitly, I enjoyed those games more than the last senior EURO ;) Read today that the top 4 players of Spain are already worth more than 180 Billion combined, I am sure we will see a lot more of those guys in the coming years.

I agree with you, Spain played great and deserved to win final. I expected more from Germany in this game. Even goal that they scored didn't changed anything, Germany just didn't made dangerous attacks during last minutes.
@Trofo, yeah, Ceballos was great, but his future in Real is questionable, Zidane don't see him in his plans, but Ceballos also have big release clause.
