NBA to launch virtual sports betting game

A virtual sports betting game featuring NBA highlights and footage will debut next season in U.S. and European gaming and lottery markets, the league and NBPA announced Wednesday.

"NBA Last 90" will drop contestants into the final 90 seconds of a simulated matchup between two NBA teams and offer wagering propositions on what transpires during the ending of a fictitious game.

NBA partner Highlight Games Limited, a specialist games supplier, stiches together highlights from recent seasons to tell a story of what plays out during the 90 seconds. Contestants will be able to wager on several outcomes, including which team will win, who will score on the first possession and the total points scored by both teams. A random number generator, similar to what's used in slot machines, will determine the outcomes.

Betting on virtual sports is new to the growing U.S. sports betting landscape, but it's already established in European markets. In the United Kingdom, £771.4 million was bet on virtual sports from April 2017 to May 2018, according to the U.K. Gambling Commission. That's three times as much as was wagered on golf during that time period in the U.K.

The interest in virtual betting in Europe caught the NBA's eye, said Scott Kaufman-Ross, the NBA's head of fantasy and gaming.

"We've been looking at this the past couple years and were really surprised to see how popular this was," Kaufman-Ross told ESPN. "In Europe, we're especially excited about using virtual as another way to engage with our fans with alternative content, especially given the time-zone challenges we have in the region."

The NBA will become the first major U.S. sports league to enter the virtual sports betting market, as it continues to look for ways to embrace and profit from the gaming industry.

"We are extremely excited about this partnership and the potential future opportunities for our players in the virtual gaming space," Josh Goodstadt, executive vice president of licensing for THINK450, the commercial arm of the NBPA, said in a release announcing the virtual betting game. "We look forward to working with the NBA and Highlight Games to create a unique gaming experience that will help to grow the popularity of the players and the league worldwide."

In July 2016, bookmaker William Hill U.S. launched virtual horse racing in Nevada. New Jersey and Pennsylvania also allow betting on virtual events, but it has yet to catch on in the U.S. Virtual horse racing is available at 19 William Hill sportsbooks in Nevada.

Horse racing is believed to be the most popular sport for virtual betting in the U.K., although there are also multiple virtual games for soccer, including Highlight Games' SOCCERBET.

Now, the U.K. company hopes to find success with the NBA.

"Highlight Games has an ambitious strategy to enter the nascent US sports betting and virtual sports market, and this collaboration is the first important step on that journey," Highlight Games CEO Tim Green said in the release. "NBA Last 90 features real NBA stars and real NBA highlights, differentiating it from any other virtual sports product on the market. We're confident that players around the world will be instantly engaged with NBA Last 90."

I guess it's a good news, but honestly I never tried virtual betting, can anyone educate me how it is done?
I'm a big fan of sports betting and I also bet in NBA games, but this one seems new to me but I'm kind of interested if I will learn how to do it.

A random number generator, similar to what's used in slot machines, will determine the outcomes.

So, it's not much different from playing slots? Looks cool though.

Guess it would still appeal to basketball fans despite that. So how does the betting go with this game? Since these are fictional matches rather than scheduled games I'm assuming anyone can just come in any time and play.

That's great great, at least more gamblers will become much interested to play sports betting games with a new wave of development coursed through NBA. This could attract a lot of money, and the advantage of it was virtual currency will be used to speed up the betting transactions. Cryptocurrency adoption will boost faster if demand for this NBA sports betting will surely come to success in the future.

According to the statement here....

"NBA Last 90" will drop contestants into the final 90 seconds of a simulated matchup between two NBA teams and offer wagering propositions on what transpires during the ending of a fictitious game.

..there will several be outcomes. Meaning all winnings will be based on RGN (random number generator). Just like playing in a house edge gambling games.

I didn't see any involvement of "crypto" here so I think it's not the right time to discuss this.

Well it is a good news, most fans will be happy about it, but for those people who love NBA that are living  in a poor country without the means of getting into online betting will left behind. You know here in our place most commoners place bets o which team will be the champion, who will be the mvp etc. There no things such odds and just bet equally, if I win I get the same amount of money that I bet. There are  no fees and it is easy. So if the NBA launches this betting site, they will be sad to hear that they won't be able to participate. I am a fan of NBA and I like betting with my colleagues regarding the outcome of the games.

So it's like fantasy football, but with betting and for the NBA?

Looks like trash, I really don't think this will catch on. People only bet on sports because they think the can predict the winner better than the bookmakers, when this element of the game is missing, why would people play?

This is DOA.

Seconded and this is why we do see those fantasy bets doesn't really get enough interest due for that reason.

Its a little too late because most of the sportsbetting are already available on betting sites but this is still a good adoption at least we can bet directly to their site. NBA is a good league for sure many bettor will use the platform to bet on the next season.

That's true. But it's never too late in this business. Since they are carrying the official site, the trust of the bettors will always be there. So getting their players will not be hard. And integrating crypto in the near future might very likely to happen also.

We can't be sure if this would catch on. On one hand there are fans that might try anything with "NBA" in the name on the other hand there may be those who would not be satisfied with the way the results are determined.

Looks like trash, I really don't think this will catch on. People only bet on sports because they think the can predict the winner better than the bookmakers, when this element of the game is missing, why would people play?

That's what initially crossed my mind when the article mentioned "randomizer". The bettors might as well just have played dice.

If it works somehow like NBA Live but they just created it so others can watch players stream and then bet on those games, then it might have been better.

I don't know but I do not feel betting on such games. I would rather stick to actual games. This will probably end up being a flop and will be trashed sooner than the creators think.

Well this doesn't concur with the title of your post. I was thinking the virtual NBA betting would be ran by NBA themselves or organised by them but that's not the case. Wouldn't  say that this would be the first NBA virtual gaming site

Another variety of palying slots. Its unique and new that suits our generation now. So i guess its just like slots but has a game play for more than a minute that decides the winning combination. It sounds easy to play and im sure basketball fans will enjoy playing this game too.

Are you trolling? It's almost the copy of Sports betting. The only difference is that in Virtual sports betting everything happens virtually and randomly and bet positions aren't as much and exclusive as it's offered in sports betting.
One user really made correct comparison between virtual sports betting and slots, it's not different from them. None virtual sports offers same verify process like dice and similar ones, they are based on random number generators as far as I know and I highly believe system automatically makes some people to win and some  to lose in order to collect specific profit.

Most people that I know use 'odds' as their main betting website for NBA and the release of this new website will surely eliminate the need to rely on that party. If NBA were to implement this kind of feature, most people would be attracted but this slightly renders them that they are indeed, comfortable in betting.

I am actually looking forward with this betting application since this would definitely affect the gambling industry and the sports betting industry as whole, not just the NBA.

Its a little too late because most of the sportsbetting are already available on betting sites but this is still a good adoption at least we can bet directly to their site. NBA is a good league for sure many bettor will use the platform to bet on the next season.

Businesses need to evolve and adapt to change. Betting using cryptocurrency is the new age of betting and people would slowly migrate to this kind of change in the near future. Like you mentioned, no one is late in the business and it's better to start late than to never start at all.

No it's not too late. Didn't you know that virtual sports betting is a growing industry.

And it's not about there are already lots of sports betting site out there but this is another trend in the world of gambling outside crypto.

No questions about being fair and square. NBA is a big name. No way they will do some shit here.

These virtual sports reminds me of an arcade game where you can bet on a horse race that quickly resets after the race is over and they are sealed inside a glass. Sometimes they're one of the most played games on the arcade because of how much people are winning tokens. I'm not a fan of virtual sports since there's already enough games and sports to bet on but I could see how others would enjoy it.

I think that could be it, it's just a slot game but a twist and they are going to target basketball fans, it's not actually going to be boring if you still not over with the Raptors and Warriors games, you can extend it here and if you are a Warrior fan you'll hope that Warriors bear the Raptors in this game.

Indeed, not because we’re in virtual world means we will bet for virtual chance of winning lol

I guess it’s better to copy the Basketball game betting that popular in Philippines Called ENDING in which the winning number combination will come from the last digits of the final scores ,that’s more even reliable than randomly chooses the winnings

I think this would be the first ever virtual betting game I have ever seen too for most U.S leagues, and I never thought that it could be possible with NBA. It is a good thing though and I am waiting to see how I can benefit from this type of sport betting.

I have not really paid much attention to virtual sport betting like other methods of betting, but now that my favorite sport is introducing it, I guess I just have to learn to play this type of betting by all means, maybe I could use my experience to have some winnings, from here I believe they will be having plans now to also migrate it into full blockchain betting.

It will get attention since playing in any types of gambling most bettors wanted to take part and use the platform, it will attract most of those who's sports loving gamblers as they can easily adopt how system will works and how they can enjoy playing this new added virtual games.

Well, NBA is one of the biggest sports BETTING could ever made in the next season though there are bettings already that happen but neither of it has done using a platform to which it will bring more comfort to betting. Having a platform that a user can easily bet will encourage more people to come and bet since especially in every play offs, series of finals eastern and western conference finals to championship.

Knowing that it's determined randomly kinda takes away from the fun though, at least for me. You could have just tossed a coin. I understand that some people might lap at it just coz of the branding.

Like I mentioned in a previous comment, it would have been more interactive if there are people playing the players in a simulation and the "audience" can watch and bet. I mean, they even already had NBA Live for Android since 2016, how much trouble is it to put a betting feature?

So this is basically about betting on fictitious NBA matches and not the real things? Sounds interesting but quite confusing.
I guess the idea is to create endless matches to bet on with no need waiting for the real scheduled matches

Virtual sports betting is just an imitation of normal sports betting as everything happens virtually and users get access to gamble 24 hours. With virtual gambling the odds can be selected from the choice provided by the system, and the important factor missing is the lack of excitement. We'll be watching the game same as that of the real one which are functional through specific algorithms. We won't be getting any thrill on these sports betting as we doesn't need to think anything about the players and the game play as everything is selected and t gets into functioning based on the backing algorithm.

I don't like simulation, why don't they do it on the actual 90 seconds of a game where people can bet and the NBA will have like a commercial break for a minute or two where people either can bet on casinos and what not but mainly also on the computer via some website as well. That way the last 90 seconds will be open to betting thanks to giving us some time with the time out but at the same time still real life and not a simulation.

On simulation I would never know how they did it, like in 2k you can make your guys go 99 overall and I wouldn't know about it so what if the simulation is like that and Charlotte comes back from 20 points and beats warriors in the last 90 seconds? Who knows what will go around in those things, that is why I would rather not risk my money into it.
