Title: Best way to give physical bitcoin?
Post by: vanfis on July 04, 2019, 02:47:40 PM
I would like to give bitcoins as a physical gift for people who knows nothing about it.

I tried to create paper wallet, but it is easy destructible.

I found Casascious, it looks honest, but it is not sold anymore. Ebay is selling mostly fakes.
I like https://denarium.com/, but I am little bit afraid about security of private keys.

What is the way you are using?

In order to give physical Bitcoin to your well wishers and families as gift you should ensure to visit the https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=217.0 where you can find more physical Bitcoin for your offering. With this thread nothing to worry about privacy as they keep them private.
Without iota of doubt, you can get all you ever wanted from the thread provide.

I register today and have been there on the thread to get some collectibles for my office use becasue i have been an investor of Bitcoin since 2007 but had never seen what the physical Bitcoin looks like, which to me is a shame on my part, more-also, i have never heard of this place since 2007 but just surfing the internet and fond out there is a place i get all i dreamed about.

For those who are responsibly for the creation of this site down to the maintenance team, you are awesome and amazing.

I wouldn't give bitcoin to people who know nothing about it, and especially not physicial. But perhaps a cascasio coin could be nice indeed.

I don't know anything about https://denarium.com/, but if you do end up using them, always use multisig in case they go bust. (Although, if you're going to gift the coin, this might become a hassle, especially if the user you're gifting it to doesn't know anything about bitcoin.  :-\)

You can use OpenDimes (https://opendime.com/). It's basically a USB stick that you plug into your computer, you send funds to it, and then give it to someone. The wallet is sealed, and you can only spend the funds If you break some part of the stick. I suggest checking the videos on the site.

If I were to give out BTC to multiple people, I would let them install a good wallet on their phone. That way, they get to experience their first bitcoin transaction. I always thought that if you give people paper wallets, especially if the bitcoin aren't worth that much, chances are that they would probably just leave the paper wallet wherever, until the value goes up and they end up being unable to remember where they stored the paper wallet.

You may try giving them a ledger or trezor with a fund already (you may also let them set everything needed then get its address for you to be able to fund it). This is quite expensive rather than giving them a paper wallet or physical coin with fund. It's not easy to be broken and you can buy it directly from their website so you couldn't get scammed.

You unpeal the coin. There is a private-key inside of it which you can use to import in your wallet and spend the coins.

AFAIK the Denarium coins are legit.

Assuming you don't fund it with very large amounts, I wouldn't worry much about this. People are used to gift certificates, and I don't think it's very likely they get destroyed by accident. You can laminate it against accidentally exposing the private key.

I've used this a few times to give away Bitcoin, and I'm planning a few more soon. Just 0.005 BTC by now is a decent amount (over 50 euro) for most occasions, and printing is very cheap compared to the value it holds.
I think Bitcoinpaperwallet.com (https://bitcoinpaperwallet.com/) looks a bit nicer for a giveaway than the one from bitaddress.org (https://www.bitaddress.org/[/url).

As a bit of an evil joke, I've been thinking about printing the same paper wallet several times, and giving a few people a copy (say at a party), telling them the first one to figure out how to transfer Bitcoin gets the cash :D

Paper wallets don't have to be literally made of paper, you can write the keys down on any other medium. There are multiple projects that offer tools for writing down private keys or seeds on metal, that's probably the most indestructible medium that you can get. Or you can just laminate a paper wallet to protect it from water and bugs.

But I think the biggest risk with physical Bitcoin is not that they will get destroyed, but that they will get lost - I've heard many stories how people gifted paper wallets to their friends and relatives, and those people just forgot about wallets and lost them. But now the risk of it happening is lower, because Bitcoin awareness has increased.

Paper wallet is your best bet. Its free, you need to print it only, but you control the keys.
You can choose design of it, how it looks and its nice looking thing for gift (if you chose right :>)

Multisig is safe, but you need to keep another thing with second private key. Two things will be easier to lose.

It looks great. But what will happen if this stick will break? Bitcoin are lost?

Is here the way to securely create segwit paper wallet?

Hit the collectibles sub here buddy. Cas coins are traded every single week.

Edit: would help if I wasn’t a twat and actually added the link

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=217.0

Plenty of members there will happily assist and advise any newbies, I’m not selling anything myself at the moment but if you are wanted to spend a few BTC feel free to drop me a PM and I’ll give you advice

I've gifted plenty of BTC to people.

I would never gift it in a physical form that couldn't be backed up multiple times over which means something like a physical coin wouldn't cut it. People who know nothing about it won't respect it and more than likely will lose it.

Easiest will always be a paper wallet which you can keep a copy of. If it's not password protected then I hope they make a nominal attempt to keep it hidden.

Yes, If the device no longer works, there is no way to recover the coins (unless they presented something in V4 that I'm not aware of). I wouldn't suggest them for storing big amounts for the long term anyway.

As for creating SW paper wallets: https://github.com/coinables/segwitaddress

Ledger itself is already $100 in price, so I don't think that anyone would be willing to spend that much for a few dollars at best just to let people get the hang of it. A good old paper wallet is great, just laminate it so as to cover the whole thing and make it weather-proof/destruction-proof for a long time. Just don't misplace it and that's where one of the many problems might persist. Also take a look at some good old Casascius sold in the Collectibles section of the forum.
