Title: Fell for the update scam but still have my BTC in Electrum wallet..
Post by: Trumpet69 on July 11, 2019, 11:15:24 AM
Hi,

I hadn't used my Electrum wallet for a few months and was unaware of the phishing issues that Electrum users had been experiencing. I am running version 3.2.3 on OSX Yosemite 10.10.5 btw. I transferred some BTC to my Electrum wallet with no issues, I then needed to transfer some funds to a different wallet so I initiated a transaction from Electrum. The phishing dialogue popped up I stupidly updated and then it dawned on me that something was wrong and that I might have just been phished. Thankfully the transaction didn't initiate and no funds seem to have been taken as my balance is the same. I obviously deleted the DL and then reinstalled the Electrum app. Have done this numerous times and have deleted config & Server files to no avail. The app loads up, either takes forever to synchronise or connects but does not allow me to complete any transactions. I realise that denying these transactions might be Electrums way of stopping any from funds being sent through a scam server to the culprits account and now know that most of the servers I have on Electrum are mostly fake/scam servers.

Essentially, i'd like some advice on how to obtain my BTC as they are showing up in my balance, I just can't send them anywhere as my wallet seems to be infected and/or being blacklisted and blocked by Electrum.

Any insight/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

If you have another PC then try it in there or you can reinstall your OS and can try again. Make sure you have your .dat file or the seeds backed up. Keeping backup of the seeds are always easy for me. This is how you find it:

Open Electrum
Navigate to the menu and click on Wallet
Click Seed

You will see your seeds. Write them down in a paper of keep a copy in a text file and never lose them.

Thanks for the advice. I'll try what you've suggested, hopefully this will amend the situation. Either way, i'll report back with the results.

Thanks for the quick response, much appreciated!

3.2.3 no longer works so that's why you can't use it anymore. you should install electrum 3.3.7 on a clean system and use that. only download from electrum.org.  there are many similar looking sites and domain names so pay attention. electrum dot org. nothing else. not dot net. not dot com.

it's also a good idea to learn to gpg verify the download. there's a guide here (https://bitcoinelectrum.com/how-to-verify-your-electrum-download/) for various OS.

Be aware that the fake Electrum may have sent your seed mnemonic to the hackers. Given that your funds have not disappeared as yet, this may not be the case. However, maybe the hackers are just busy :P

So, you should do as Abdussamad has suggested and install the latest version on a clean device as soon as possible. Then, I would recommend that you create a completely new wallet with a new seed mnemonic and then send all your funds to the new wallet ASAP.
