Unless you have a high-end ATI Radeon 5xxx or 6xxx video card, it is not even worth your while. The difficulty of producing your own bitcoins is very high because other miners are using specialized hardware setups designed specifically for mining (and Bitcoins are produced at a set rate). You can explore the mining subforum (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=14.0) and see what the miners are talking about.

You need a special mining shovel.  Don't worry I have an extra I would be willing to sell you.

Seriously mining = hashing blocks = makes network secure.  Miners are paid a reward of 50 BTC when they find the "solution" for a block.  Given the difficulty in finding a solution most miners/hashers work in pools to split the reward when anyone in the pool solves a block.
