BUT first you need to 'activate' your account and send them 0.02 BTC ! The shocking bit is that all the websites are similar in design and there are lots of them. I am sure we haven't even exhausted all of them

Hopefully you can report their site and have their certificate invalidated. Usually that will help the most in terms of preventing people from even accessing the website.
