Title: Why .IO is popular in crypto websites than .COM ?
Post by: terizla on August 07, 2019, 10:25:40 AM
In every crypto websites like a gambling, ico, hyip, exchange, trading websites. Most of them is using .IO

About that price, .IO is more expensive than .COM.
Why not use .com and other domain ?
After i read article about domain, i can several reason why .IO is popular in crypto websites.

- .IO is more simple and easy to remember
- Most of websites using .COM. I think this is difficult to create domain name because most of them already created.
- Difference security in every domain.
- .IO look like a binary number ( 1 and 0). This is reason why websites related to technology are very suitable to use .IO .

I think that for technology the .tech is much more suitable.
And for the crypto free projects .org is more suitable.

Unfortunately as Bitcoin history has shown, .com domain is very important too, since unknowing people will most probably (also) go for the .com website and may find there something completely different (in this case bcash).

Back to .io, I think that .io is more suitable for sites that expose an (i/o) API. At least until somebody will figure out that and ask IANA allow them start selling .api domains  ;D
So the bunch of websites using .io can do that because: other similar domains were taken, seen .io at others and found it cool.

it's the new trend XD

I found this, maybe it's the real reason why .io is more famous these days and used by many startups.
Quote
IO in computer science language is taken as I/O (Input/Output) which caught the attention of many computer geeks. Hence, it was used by a lot of tech companies later on. Funny enough, the first company to register the .IO domain was not a tech company but a fashion and apparel brand by the name LEVI’S. They had registered http://levi.io .

Simple, .io is more popular because most project that uses it are either IT related or start up and since the cryptocurrency industry is made of mostly startup in the form of altcoins and service providers it's understandable why the domain host is popular although I doubt most exchanges make use if it just as you highlighted in OP.

Quick search and you'll discovered that, most reputable exchange make use of .com although there are few which make use of .io domain host but .com is more popular among the exchanges guess this has to do with the prevention against phishing hacks.

All answers above are wrong.

Cryptocurrency projects uses .io or .info or .tech or .shit or whatever simple because .com is not available or it is more expensive.

Take for example.blockchain.info. they bought .com finally after 10 years, for millions

About that price, .IO is more expensive than .COM.

This information is wrong and makes absolutely no sense.

.IO price is $28.88/year and .COM price is just $8.88/year

The IO code is formally a country code for the British Indian Ocean Territory, although it  has given way to a generic usage, not related to any territory. IO is more likely seen as Input/Output than a 1/0, and it allows to play a bit in the site’s name construction (i.e. stud.io, cheer.io, etc.). Either way, it is a trendy domain extension used by tech-related companies. Arguably, .tech would be more meaningful to a broader audience, and both would provide way more availability than .com type domains.

The do have some restrictions though:
Quote
5. APPROPRIATE USE
No .IO domain may be used, directly or indirectly, for any purpose that is sexual or pornographic or that is against the statutory laws of any Nation. In the event of the Registry being advised by any party that a specific site breaches this condition then the Registry reserves the right to immediately deactivate the offending registration.
(see https://www.nic.io/rules.htm)

Most of crypto related businesses are operating through offshore countries. Therefore, a lot of them buying domains of offshore countries due to easier regulation. Its also cheaper and easier to protect real owner data of .io domain then .com (I mean anonymous domain registration).

Thats price for non premium domain. For example, if you would buy bitcoin.com domain it would cost 1,000,000$ while bitcoin.io just 10,000$.

I agree with Bitmover here.
Price is the main reason.

As we all know that Roger purchased Bitcoin.com for himself
he can now manipulate with many newcomers and BCH Bcash.

In the end... if search engines detect your website, it does not matter so much what domain they used .com or .io
or maybe new blockchain based .ZIL domains

I guess people buy domain based on their site name which ever is suitable or most sync with the site name.

.com is more popular everywhere so people who adopt more then we can see more .com websites related to crypto.

I don't think that's always the case, sometimes companies can use .io if they primarily want to appeal to coders. Github's main site is on .com domain, but they have also .io which they use for hosting user's pages. There are other examples of it like Itch.io, Codepen.io, Etherscan.io.

If you want to appeal to a general global market, then there is no alternative to a .com. If you don't have the dot com, then it looks as if you can't afford it. The main reason for using alternative TLDs is the lack of availability of a suitable dot com name. However, it is possible to pick up some good names if you watch the expired lists, or if you purchase one through a registrar's sales listings, or an aftermarket site. One other alternative is to write to the owner of a domain that you fancy, you may be able to purchase it from him.

It would be good if we had a workable board for selling domain names in this forum as well.

How is .io more simple and easy to remember? I bet many people have never seen such a domain. On the contrary, .com is known by everyone.
I think the second reason is the most probable.

I reckon this, .io and other domains that are not .com are simply cheaper.

You can see on how much a sample .com is compare to a website that has .io through --> godaddy.com/domain-value-appraisal (http://godaddy.com/domain-value-appraisal)

More people will still search .com websites first so they are a lot more expensive if you are buying a common name while io domain names can be very cheap.  Bitcoin.com is famously owned by Roger Ver and he probably wouldn't even sell it for $10 million now.

.com and .net are popular domain names in the world. I also do not understand why the project took a domain name with no high value like .io
.io is an acronym for some words?

<…> .io is an acronym for some words?

The acronym is explained above in this same thread, in a previous post of mine: “io” is a Country Code that stands for British Indian Ocean Territory. It’s recent popularity does not have anything to do with those territories, but rather more a quest to find a catchy domain extension, that renders plenty of free domain names for many tech companies that have adopted .io. The relation to technology is through giving the domain extension a semantics that is not the original one, turning it into a global conceptual semantics for “Input/Output”.

It means investors have reasons to doubt about reliability of projects that run their sites on domain names with .io, .info, etc. I am not a technical guy, so I am not sure, but what did you imply that price of a .com site? Millions (really)? I think .com sites for unknown domain names, have cheap price. Blockchain.com is expensive because nowadays blockchain is one of hottest keywords, and crypto, blockchain are future of human civilization.
For other names, ie. Botcoin.com (if I want to run a new project, with a crypto currency, namely Botcoin), I don't think that domain name is expensive.

Really
You don't need to be technical guy to look at prices:

Quote
Here are the 25 most expensive domain names publicly reported.

    CarInsurance.com — $49.7 million
    Insurance.com — $35.6 million
    VacationRentals.com — $35 million
    PrivateJet.com — $30.18 million
    Voice.com — $30 million
    Internet.com — $18 million
    360.com — $17 million
    Insure.com — $16 million
    Fund.com — £9.99 million
    Sex.com — $14 million*
https://www.godaddy.com/garage/the-top-20-most-expensive-domain-names/

Why didn't those people just bought a cheaper carinsurance.io domain, or a 360.io? Because nobody care about .io domains.

Obviously. However a .io domain will be even cheaper. And a .com domian may not even available.

.io has more available website domain with cheaper price. Most popular domain name with .com tail is already registered and/or you must pay high price to afford it. Also, i think that it relate to ICO, as short written it IO, something will memorize you that it's a crypto website  ;D

Honestly, I though io are for Russians projects because most the bounty I joined in the past are run by Russians.
When I saw the thread, it really interest me and I found out I was wrong with what I believe.

Forgive me, I'm not a Techy guy and I don't have website on my own.

Russia is a big nation in IT, and in blockchain technology, but it is not fair to say all or most of projects that have domain names with .io at the end come from Russia.
Why do you not check it there?

Maybe you will find some basic information you want on your interest domains.

I asked this question to a crypto site's Admin a couple years back. He said .io is popular with developers because not much names had been taken yet.

That off course also instantly gives a problem: if you're using a .io website, people can still accidentally try to find you at .com. Just like you need to buy .eu, .net, .org and several other common names if you want to prevent easy phishing attacks.

It means at beginnings, developers tend to choose .io for their sites, because they are mostly available, and cheap (?). Then, if developers actually have good dedication and put decent efforts to build up their platforms to become big ones. After years (assumed they take years to build up good platforms); they come back to buy domains with .com, .eu. etc. Unfortunately, when their sites are famous, and valuable, other domains they want to buy suddenly pumped in value. Like what we saw with blockchain.info and blockchain.com.

TBH, it's all about "trends". Many, many domain extensions have tried in the past to replace ".com" (dot com) and they all remained in a trend for some nice amount of time; however, dot com has always survived and outclassed them all repeatedly. Moreover, there's more of a "show-off" element involved in almost every new start-ups out there than the "cheaper extension" element. Generally, dot com is cheaper than dot io across all major domain name providers (Godaddy, NameCheap, etc), but interestingly, most people (especially the ones who're struggling with a new start-up) who think that they're "over-smart", try to go with the brand new shorter domain name (dot io, dot co, etc), even when the dot com version of the same name is available. I know about a few cases (and they were all start-ups) which started with a better-than-dot-com domain name and later migrated to dot com due to lack of SEO, lack of visitors' interaction with the website, etc.

It means investors have reasons to doubt about reliability of projects that run their sites on domain names with .io, .info, etc.

I'm not sure if someone around has witnessed the growth (and downfall) of paid-to-click industry (talking about the years 2005 to 2015), but I think that those who have witnessed it will still care about the domain name extension of the website before risking their valuable time (and in some cases, the funds) on the websites. I remember that in the years 2013-2015, a lot of PTC websites (which were literally run by 14-year-old kids) were popping up and due to lack of pocket-money, they were all going for a very cheap "dot info" domain name, which had a couple of bucks registration charges (and in some cases, it was even less than a buck, excluding that 18 cents ICANN fee). Resultantly, people stopped being interested at all in those dot info/dot tk platforms and were all considered as "child-owned" websites. I think that if BTC dominance continues to grow and alts continue to shrink, then we might get to see the kids popping up in crypto-industry and cloning the alts with a negligible budget. If that day comes, I'm sure that those kids will be then looking for those "under-a-buck" domain names again, and newcomers will have to stay away from those projects!

P.S. in those days, dot co domain name was considered to be rich (& a better/shorter version of dot com) and people used to trust the website using it more as compared to the websites using other extensions. So IMO, dot io is the new dot co these days.

.com is so 90's.

.io is for companies of the new millennium - internet organizations!

Hmmm... well, quite sure that my grandpa still thinks that all websites end up with .com extension (only). ::)

Their price is expensive because their website is already popular and grow right now.
Is just like a Bitcoin, in 2009 their price is under $1 then you can see now. More than $10000 because Bitcoin is popular right now.
