Title: Bitcoin with a Clean Record
Post by: alexcopper on August 07, 2019, 10:00:58 PM
What are your thoughts on Bitcoin that holds a shady past? BTC that has a dark transaction history attached to it often has gone through global money laundering exercises or terrorism-related activities. Even after a token has been exchanged a number of times the trail can still be traced thus putting the the owner at risk.

Will these 'Virgin bitcoin' be worth more? Can you wipe a BTC clean? I have so many questions.

This is such an interesting topic. I never realized this could even pose an issue as I sure most people can agree. In the article Dave Jevans of ciphertrace mentions that dark histories of these coins impede the funginility of the BTC which poses a big concern for hedge funds and larger traders who hold a large number of stolen assets

It doesn't make sense to be punished because you have BTC that people use in a  illegal way

You can make a similar thought, you have money in cash that probably passed in a hand of criminals...can you be punished?

I'm sorry but if that's really a concern than banks should start testing paper bills for drugs as they are taken in. Just google "drug traces on currency", there's plenty to go on. There are a ton of virgin coins out there and if people really pay a premium for them that's going to be hilarious; coin is coin. Discussion should end there, now if they want to charge someone with criminal offences based on coin usage they will need to get much better proof of a crime than your money came from a criminal at some point in time.

I started to discussion about this a little while ago as it pertained to loaded physical collectibles.

It's probably useful to keep discussing it on and off.

I don't think either side of BTC is BTC and it does not matter vs. there is some BTC that you don't want to explain where it came from will change the other sides mind.
But it's good to discuss so newer people can see both sides.

However, what is interesting is the fact that criminal Bitcoin can be sanitized by local governments by them selling such commodities after making a clear note of their past transactional history. The best example of this is when the United States Marshals Service held a sealed bid auction back in 2018 for a total of 3,813 Bitcoins (estimated to be worth $51.5 million at the time).
quoted from the given url link in OP post
it's a scheme concocted by a few parties as a scare tactic and to increase value of bitcoin they hold
US Marshals cleaned the confiscated bitcoin and turned it into "good" virgin bitcoin?
yeah right :P like we care, so now certain government agencies can act as official bitcoin mixers, eh?

This is not only happening on bitcoin trasaction, there are also instances that they are using other crypto for their illegal transaction therefore bitcoin is just only a tool for their illegal payment transaction. Even fiat has also dark side we should also look that.

There are precisely many negative transactions that you can encounter using Bitcoin and because of Bitcoin's anonymous feature they can sure perform such things I would never include Bitcoin as the one partaking this kind of action or encouraging criminals to do it but it is a tool that they are using, That means they are just using bitcoin as a tool.

But the things is they are accusing the creator of bitcoin as an associate for providing terrorist financial freedom to buy armaments, The illegal gambling scheme, The fraudulent use of transaction, And we can treat Bitcoin as money and just like fiat money people can get greedy because of it.

Yes, Bitcoin has a shady past but it was because of the user and not because of the asset itself, being user it's our responsibility to use this digital asset with a noble attitude.

What are your thoughts on Bitcoin that holds a shady past?

shady past?

-  gold not have shady past?

- diamond not have shady past?

- Oil not have shady past?

- the banks not have shady past?

People always use anything to commit crimes or to take advantage of others. What is happening about bitcoin are political things, not just about money laundering and fighting crime. is about if bitcoin will take away the high control politicians have over their people. Banks are allies of the politicians in power, which is why governments are not against banks.
