Title: Some tools I think they are needed in the forum
Post by: javadsalehi on August 19, 2019, 06:08:23 PM
1. Sorting threads by the date they have started
2. Sorting threads by number of merits the OP has received.
3. Excluding some sections when "unread posts since last visit" are shown
4. Getting notified when some one quotes our replies.

1. Sorting threads by the date they have started
Already exists.

For example: Meta board

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=24.0;sort=last_post;desc
Sort from latest to earlier posting date

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=24.0;sort=last_post
Sort from earliest to latest posting date.

2. Sorting threads by number of merits the OP has received.
Was proposed by other users several times if I am not wrong.

3. Excluding some sections when "unread posts since last visit" are shown

This page? https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=unread

May be ignoring the boards you do not want to see posts from. Not sure if this will work.

4. Getting notified when some one quotes our replies.
Already have a bot created by a user name piggy.

Already have a bot created by a user name piggy.

That is a notification bot for when your name is added to a post or reply and not when your post/reply is quoted. The only way to do that now is to revisit the thread or be notified of any new post

2. Sorting threads by number of merits the OP has received.

This would create an inbalance making it difficult for lower ranked members to get publicity for their post, so if for example, they wanted to notify others about a potential scam, their post would be buried below other posts even as soon as it is posted. I do not think this would be helpful in any way.

I just checked using ignore board preference and I can assure you that "Show unread posts since last visit" does not show post from a board which is in your ignore list.

It's same thing if I am not misunderstanding.

I didn't mean this.
Posts are easily sorted by the date of last post created on threads. I meant sorting the threads by the date the date they started( the date of OP)

Try this: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=24.0;sort=first_post;desc

It has both functions.

You can activate or deactivate the notification for being quoted.

I'm not sure if you can use it ONLY for quotes, but it will let you know when you are quoted for sure.

2. Sorting threads by number of merits the OP has received.
Merits shouldn't determine how threads are sorted, I think the current system used to sort threads works fine based on how active the thread is(last comments).
A user with 10 merits can create a thread with more value than one with a thousand merit, thus why should the latters come/be sorted or placed first, this things have been thought through, that's why they have not been implemented.
And one can always bump their threads if necessary, this part is working very fine, I see no need for modification.

Find more here: List of Bitcointalk.org Userscripts/ Add-ons (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5148488.0)
And if in the future, you have more requests, you can ask for new userscripts, if your ideas are interesting, there are coders will help you.

Topic: Some tools I think they are needed in the forum.
I don't think this will work.
The system and rules that run on this forum are very good and enjoyed by every member, although some are burdensome for users.

@theymos, have a goal for the better Bitcointalk Forum going forward. Which is never suspected by everyone.

Many members proposed interesting tool/proposals for the forum, but @theymos had the conviction to do what was best and what was best.
for example:
1. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=703657.0
2. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1689727.0
3. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=102355.0

Do not know, the equipment that you propose to prioritize or not, see the beauty.
Maybe, I think some of them are already in this forum, as mentioned above.

It is just a sorting function, so it's up to the user, they can sort by 'new' or for times when they just want to surf some 'good' threads, they can do so by 'sorted by merit recieved' function. I don't see how it would create imbalance.

4. Getting notified when some one quotes our replies.
Already have a bot created by a user name piggy.

A native feature. I have been on several other forums, alert thing for new quotes/replies/mentions keeps discussions flowing.

Of all the suggestions given by this OP, though they are not the first person to post similar suggestions, I would like to criticse the second one.

But going by the theory that merits are being given out subjectively do you not think the more merits are going to accumulate towards those threads that are "agreeing" to a similar opinion? The "countering" opinions would never see the light of the day if this method is followed. In other words, the concept of free speech is not being upheld with this suggestion.

4. Getting notified when some one quotes our replies.

I'm working on a service that will provide this feature, you'll just have to send you name and you will start receiving webpush notifications when there's a top-level quote with your name. The site is almost ready, I'm looking for the hosting options at the moment.
