Title: Electrum wallet on tails
Post by: Jjhungwell on August 26, 2019, 12:42:23 PM
Every time I try to send bitcoins out of my electrum wallet it gives a security alert which is much like phishing scams I have seen.  I tried deleting the wallet and starting over but it is still there.  Please help my coins are stuck in this no mans land

Last time I've checked Tails it had indeed an outdated Electrum. And Electrum older than 3.3.4 should not be used.

If you want to use it on Tails, you should install a new one onto Tails' (persistent) storage. This explanation was helpful to me first time: https://github.com/spesmilo/electrum-docs/blob/master/tails.rst
One thing is that if you install new Electrum, it will be in a new location, probably on persistent storage. Then you will have to always start up that app image (not the old link)
And I couldn't find a good solution to keep the seed / wallet persistent (but I didn't try too hard either).

I also tried this tutorial (https://blog.thestever.net/2019/02/26/upgrading-electrum-on-tails-to-3-3-4/), which should be extra detailed, but I guess I've done something wrong. If you are familiar with Linux, maybe it can give you some info though. It's for 3.3.4, but I guess that there's no difference in the steps for the latest Electrum.

Alternatively you can use tails without internet and use the old wallet as cold storage, only to sign transactions. And the transactions will be built with a watch-only wallet. But that may need more reading.

@Jjhungwell there’re two ways you can use your coins one way is to follow the detailed advise given by @NeuroticFish, or you can simply download Electrum wallet in your phone and start using your coins. It’s pertinent to note that Electrum mobile application works only on Android, and in my personal experience it’s safer than the desktop version, because the recent hacks were reported only on the desktop version.

Electrum on tails is outdated.

In order to send BTC from electrum on tails, you have to either

1) download and install electrum on the persistent storage. This will allow you to have this version of electrum between several boots, or
2) download electrum on another external storage (e.g. usb), mount it inside tails and use that version of electrum.

In both cases, make sure to verify the pgp signature of electrum before installing (installer) or running (appimage) it.

Running Tails with a persistent volume, actually negates the advantages of using it, because I simply use it as a small bootable OS to test some websites and once I reboot, all malware or viruses that might have infected the OS, is gone. <It fresh boots a whole OS with every reboot>  ;D

Yea, as several people indicated, the built-in Electrum wallet is outdated, so you will have to upgrade it and then run a persistent volume to run it.  :P  <Just do not click on any phishing links to upgrade to the new software, rather go directly to the Github or original website to do this.>                                    https://electrum.org  -- Latest release: Electrum-3.3.8
