Title: BTCDir - Bitcoin Directory
Post by: coolindark on August 26, 2019, 06:11:51 PM
Hello everyone,

Welcome to the BTCDir, the Bitcoin Directory

BTCDir is a simple directory which helps people to find Bitcoin related services with webmaster contributions. It's based on a simple directory infrastucture which is register-free, easy to use and clean.

Our system does not need any registration for both navigating and website contribution. We check all sites manually and add to our database.

BTCDir is a great resource for people and a free advertising space for webmasters! Everyone is welcome to add their websites and have a place in this simple but useful project!

Thanks.

Seems like an useful project.
But how will you maintain the site? How will you verify what everyone lists? How will you keep the scammers out? How will you penalize or restrict repeated posts of the same service and essentially stop spamming?
These are just the few questions that come to mind at first. I'll be back with more review and feedback.

Thanks for your interest and honest questions.
About maintaining and verifying; i can handle them one by one and i don't think that it will be storm anyway. If the project will turn to a storm (i love this though) i can continue with moderators. I have a internal system to stop spamming like URL, same sentences, email address ban. Also the site is for webmasters which means i will only accept domains, not links; which will penetrate lot of spam entries too.

All in all it's a directory service without auto approval. This is the nr1 spam filter  :D

I'd love for you to have a storm as well but sadly I don't think it'll happen again anytime soon.
But what I think will happen is that there will be a lot of dubious and shady people would list their businesses with you in such a clever way that you would not be able to catch them.
What about a business model? How are you planning to make money? Through ads? Premium listing?

I'm ready for shady things, thats why site has a report button. Of course they will trick me anyway :)

Not planning for premium listing. Premium listing always makes me feel like it's a scam. My goal is a good public list for everyone's benefit. Money making will be through clean ads. (Without disturbing ads like popups).

How exactly can people add stuff and links on this website?
I see only 1 link so far for Altcoin forum

Yep, so far there is only one link in the social section and it doesn't appear that people can add their own links.

What's the point of advertising your site before it has anything of value to offer?

I suggest adding a feature where people can suggest links, allowing you to check it out before approving it.

I do not know what you meant, however i can easily add an another website to the directory:

https://i.imgur.com/dxI7yET.png

You can add someone's website, it's a contribution. However if you try to add your REF links etc, site will not allow it.
The value will get higher after adding new sites by people; however i will add some major sites anyway.

Ahh, by the way; it's a website directory; not a simple link share portal; which means you cannot add your bitcointalk (or another forum) announcements.

See you are already having a storm here.
I wonder why you chose your website to look like this? It feels like a site out of the 1990's.
Is there any particular reason for this? Maybe lack of budget or didnt have a designer to work with?

Also the connection is not secure, try to add SSL here.

@Docnaster - Got the same feel here, It's like going back to late 90's when internet was not a crazy thing yet. However, I've seen this kind of design when I was doing SEO work around 2010 as well, when people starting to use this technique of submitting your article to different directories to get backlinks.

Thanks for your time and these honest thoughts.

@Docnaster There is no storm my friend, this is nothing. I have a forum already and dealing at least 100 fake registrations daily basis. About the website look, i was planning to create website with WP based actually but i'm very busy with my other projects and Arfoo is a great directory service which needs nearly "0" maintenance, all in one and very very fast due to minimal page & code size. Also; this infrastructure is very fast if you have a big directory. I know it looks old, because it is old  ;D

@Kemarit i will implement SSL but honestly SSL is not needed for this website, because there is no registration; password protected system etc.

Are you planning to add some services to your directory yourself?
If you have to wait until other people start adding their own websites, it could take a long time before your website is actually useful.

@coolindark

Good, I'd personally also remove the HYIP/Doubler/etc section, that really brings down the reputation of your website.
You'll just end up promoting scams and legitimate businesses may avoid you because of it.

The website itself looks promising but the main thing is the website is really not yet ready to be shown to the masses yet since its lacking content. Right now I only see direct websites from some forum sites including Bitcointalk and some altcoin websites in the POW folder. From what I know the forum already created a lot of topics related to lists on services and websites that accepts Bitcoin and I know it will instantly help you. You just need to find it and of course screen the services listed in the list since some of them might not be working already or is a scam website. Just keep in mind that if your website grows you must never forget to be organized on where you are putting those websites and services on so users won't get lost.

Yes, you are right; i was thinking the same thing and troubling about removing or not because even it's a scam, there are lot of intrest about them. It's good thing to see a clear opinion so i'm going to remove it.

I know it's empty and i'm going to grow it myself but as a human being, i still have faith that some people will contribute anyway :) I don't have any problem about organizing; i'm in cryptocurrency nearly from the first years so it will be a pleasure instead of pain to put website to right categories.

Thank you for your thought and time. Don't hasitate to share your ideas. Ideas are the only important thing for evolving.

I agree but it would be better if you can add it in the future. You know that everyone here in crypto world is paranoid about security, IMHO.

Just take small steps buddy, it will grow overtime, perhaps you just need a few SEO to put your website somewhere in page one of Google so that more people will contribute. Content will definitely come but it will take months and months. Just continue to work on it on your free time and you wouldn't notice that the site is growing already. So Goodluck!!!!

OK your site looks like shit but it has potential. But without SSL, security freaks like me won't even touch your site.

It's like Kemarit said. Everyone in crypto world is paranoid about security.

Besides that, I would be looking forward to see how this turns out. GL

Well you can start on doing that by assigning volunteers as mods or admins of the site therefore they have more control on what they can contribute to the directory. Allowing random guys to add websites to the directory sounds to be a bad idea at first since they would just take advantage of it of adding scammy or phishing links into the mix so you must have at least a screening process before they can even make their contributions viewable to others. Adding mods can help you by the way in this process as well.

He uses the nulled Arfooo directory script, as far as I saw the last update is from the 2008 year. it's been a long time since then and the internet is completely different especially design and security. Using script older than one year is a complete failure, and the website looks like this.

OP, your idea is fine, but maybe you can think about other solutions. If you are not familiar with programming and it's a big job for you to create a directory from scratch, for example, you can try with Wordpress plus directory plugins. It is a platform which has millions of active users and constantly working on improvements and updates. Also, you don't need programming skills to manage content there.

Thanks for all feedbacks. I'm going to change to a premium script with responsive & mobile compatible design. Also planning for https. Also it looks like my hosting is listed in SpamHaus which is a mega fail at startup. So i'm also going to move to a private server...

Gonna announce.

You can use Bitcoin.directory as a source for your info for a start, I think it hasn't been updated for some time tho, so you'll have some work to do (eliminate and add new services). As for your hosting issues, I would suggest Namecheap, they're very reputable and accepts bitcoin as well.

Social -> Entertainment is a suitable place for your site.

Wow, looks very slick man, lots of improvement and I've seen you added SSL already as suggested,  ;D.

Probably just need a few SEO to get your website on the page one of Google.

Question: Do you generate do-follow or no-follow links? I'm just curious. Usually webmasters submit their homepage to directories to generate some link juice that's why I'm asking. Best of luck to your project!!!

It was a pleasure to get feedbacks, so i listen.
The nature of directories are dofollow linking. Mutual linking is not a must but of course premium listing option will always the first selection for me.

No rush for SEO right now because site is very new and i will do it after i get maybe after 100 links.

Let's see how it will go :) i have lot of things to do in infrastructure like RSS / Sitemap etc. Nice and slowly...

OK, that's cool. Yeah, probably SEO might take a back seat and just focusing on improvements like the one you mentioned. I'm sure that when you have like 100 listing already,

There's not much competition in this niche If I'm not mistaken. Try to search on this forum and found out one: (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=473460.0). But this is very old, 2014 project and it looks lie it dead already.

One thing you could do is to link to the site in your signature.

I'll add The Bitcoin Scammer (http://bitcoinscammer.com/) to the site as well as soon as I have decided on the CMS to use, and whether I want to make it part of a much larger project.

Now is much better. Is it script from the same service? Looks fine for me.
You can add some major websites, don't wait for user fill. Also, my suggestion is to open the ANN thread in service section on Bitcointalk to get more engagement.

The script i bought has tons of missing features, that's why i'm changing it again.  :-\

Site infrastructure will be changed again. Working on it.

Edit: It is done. I will stick with this. Too much advantages it have and it has better responsive design.

I like the new layout. It's much cleaner and more businesslike in my opinion. I wish more sites were like this, instead of the flashy hyper-active creations that seem to be popular in this facebook era.
