Title: show banned account
Post by: ulrich_zh on September 20, 2019, 09:32:21 PM
Why the forum does not show that the account is banned? I’ve been on the forum for over a year and have been wondering for some time. This can complicate the life of scammers.

Why the administration of the forum will not do something like this?

P.S. I know about bpip.org (https://bpip.org)

I’m not sure if there was ever an official answer about this, but this user used to be an admin. Maybe theymos has the same opinion about the matter.

I wasn't saying there's never a valid reason to know when someone is banned, there are some. OTOH it could also be abused. For example, if you know someone is banned, then you could make a new account and impersonate them, or attempt to get them punished for ban evasion.

I'm inclined to think it's not really anyone else's business. If you were to get banned for posting granny porn would you want everyone to know that? People can usually still change their signatures and personal message (below the avatar area) if they want people to know they were banned, and why (though the why would probably be misleading).

And there have been an old discussion about this here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1674903.0

Also, IIRC Vod was developing an extension or similar that shows some info about the user directly on their profile (things like if he is banned).

(I may be wrong though)

I seem to remember something like that too, either vod or someone making a userscript that can be added to show if a user is banned (and I think number of posts/topics deleted but I could be wrong there)...

Perhaps @OP, you could try bumping that thread or PM Lauda?

On other websites I saw that nicknames of temp and permanent banned users are crossed out.

Then, in this case, even the random guest of the forum immediately figures out that such accounts have been blocked for some reasons.

Perhaps administrators don't make this information public because the same logic works here as with the tagged accounts (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5097388.msg49235321#msg49235321) - that other users can have a biased opinion on everything that a banned member wrote.

In addition, taking into account how many profiles have been banned this year (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5141807.msg50995158#msg50995158), I can imagine how some topics might look like, where several banned users were commenting at the same time.

Therefore, I have asked admins (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5129243.msg50506119#msg50506119) to share the data about banned profiles with LoyceV and Vod, for their websites loyce.club and BPIP.org, where could be possible to check the user's status.

That would require an API that provides the scraped data about which users are banned. That’s why Vod and his BPIP backend would be perfect for this.

That would be necrobumping.

or PM Lauda?
For what? That didn’t result in anything, probably because theymos opinion is that it’s none of our business.

It has been discussed multiple time previously. Admin really doesn't want to expose banned user publicly and that's the reason why admin isn't bothering implement some like that as you suggested. Banned users are not scammer and scam isn't moderated. So there is no relationship with ban & scam. Who know, perhaps banned users made some quality post, and other users might discourage to read it when they will see ban marked.

There is a sign for temporary banned user who have banned for a specific time. A noticed displaying on their signature that upto how many days that user could not wear signature. That means admin gave him second chances. But for perma ban, there is nothing to identify.
