Title: When will humanity see mass starvation?
Post by: Vod on October 08, 2019, 12:52:55 AM
Many farmers in the US are now planting solar panels because the soil will no longer support crops.  Eventually, climate change will cause massive crop failures, which will lead to mass starvation.  Even in the richer countries, a loaf of bread/jug of water will be worth more than a gold coin.  Crypto will fail as the utilities collapse.

When do you think this will happen?  What percent of humanity will survive?

Submitted Before 2050, I guess 30 years is already enough to see that the Planet Earth is already lacking on its Minerals and other Goods that humanity needs. Actually on some places we are able too this kind of scenario but in general its just about a few compared to the total population of the Earth.

Come to think of it, if this were to happen, there would be a fight between us humans just to survive and more likely after maybe 5 -  10years after this major crisis has begun, only 30% of humanity will be able to survive.
Current Technology is continuously making an advance modifications but the economy and the others stuffs that we need is being left behind. (Can't wait to see how people will struggle against these kind of crisis). But if we humans made a success path of life we might still get another 100 years of living.

It will happen somewhere between 2040-2050 and the one country who prepared for the drought and climate changes can survive.until now not much countries care about the climate changes but they are aware of water drought but still its hard to fight against these things.I guess half of the humanity will survive if there is no third world war begins for this cause or else humanity will be in danger though.

and the one country who prepared for the drought and climate changes can survive.

My friend, survival will not be national.   No country (save for small rich ones that started building 20 years ago) will be able to protect all citizens from an unbreathable atmosphere.  Small groups may survive for decades but eventually, atrophy wins and there is nothing left to fuel your life support needs.  :(

In the next statement I mentioned that no country yet preparing themselves to face climate changes but there is also another group says climate change is not real and this is only used to trigger political changes of ruling party at many countries. For the next 30 years the earth has capability to survive these conditions and after that there will be serious issue if there is no steps were taken to stop this and this could leads for humanity to extinct as well.

Wild claims!  There is no difference between that claim and the bible claim we are descending into hell.

We have the science to measure and record every attribute of the planet - current and historical, and aggregate the data to predict future events.   Everything points, repeatedly, to an earth warming prematurely and QUICKLY due to us.  :(

It will happen after a war. There might not war that will happen though unless a lunatic will hit the red button destroying nations and the only people that will be left are the Chinese since they are more than a billion. Luckily I would be dead by then and they are the only who will experience starvation. However they are good at surviving, they can eat anything and anything that doesn't kill will make them stronger.

When will humanity see mass starvation? No one can tell for sure as there are numerous factors in the play, it is hard to predict exact decade this might happen. According to UN, Only 60 Years of Farming Left If Soil Degradation Continues (https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/only-60-years-of-farming-left-if-soil-degradation-continues/).

With that being said, there are ways to decrease crops demand, for example with change of diet, and different use of crops.

Currently, 36% of the calories produced by the world's crops are being used for animal feed, and only 12% of those feed calories ultimately contribute to the human diet (as meat and other animal products). Additionally, human-edible calories used for biofuel production increased fourfold between the years 2000 and 2010, from 1% to 4%, representing a net reduction of available food globally. In this study, we re-examine agricultural productivity, going from using the standard definition of yield (in tonnes per hectare, or similar units) to using the number of people actually fed per hectare of cropland. We find that, given the current mix of crop uses, growing food exclusively for direct human consumption could, in principle, increase available food calories by as much as 70%, which could feed an additional 4 billion people (more than the projected 2–3 billion people arriving through population growth). Even small shifts in our allocation of crops to animal feed and biofuels could significantly increase global food availability, and could be an instrumental tool in meeting the challenges of ensuring global food security.

It is fair to add that not all land that is used for livestock is suitable for crops, but some might be used.

In the future we can expect way more use of cultured meat, that demand way less resources (water included), compared to conventional meat. By some estimate, cultured meat production has 82–96% lower water use depending on the product compared. It is not commercially available though, it will take some time for that to come into mass use.

Of course, all this data is irrelevant in case of nuclear war, or some other similar disaster.

for me humans will never experience mass hunger, because there are still many natural resources on earth that can be processed into food.

According the FoodForAidFoundation 1 in 7 people is hungry and 1 out of 6 children in developing countries is underweight.
The same time the 1/3 of food is wasted.
How much higher those numbers should have been, in order to say that we are already in mass starvation?

6 in 7 people being hungry can be considered as mass starvation,IMO.

I believe that resources will become scarce and part of humanity will migrate to the moon

Hey,

I don't think mass starvation, if not talking about Africa.
