This is great! UNICEF is a very famous organization, and it's also the one that's fighting to make the world a better place. Children's rights and needs are often neglected, and UNICEF is trying to deal with it. I think that them accepting cryptos is another step towards adoption as well as a sign for those who still think that Bitcoin is a Ponzi or the money of drug dealers that it is not, and in fact is also used for charity. If more organizations of this level recognize Bitcoin as money, the governments will have no choice but to do the same thing and thus make adequate regulations of it.

This really helps the donations made since it produces more profit to help those children whom are in need. We can also view the donated amount publicly which reallty helps in producing the trust since we can see how the agencies use the money donated to them. UNICEF takingbthat step with crypto also spreads the name of crypto which couls potentially help in its adoption.

Well, that's great because they can accept money around the world without some delays but they've also said that.

Quote
Fabian said to reduce risks caused by the currencies’ volatility, most of the initial projects funded in this way would be short-term.
He said the organisation would also uphold existing donor protocols – so those making donations online would have to pass rigorous checks before they were allowed to deposit funds to Unicef.

Which means they require some KYC before they could actually donate to them. I don't know if someone would like that or not but what if they want to stay anonymous? I don't know how to react to this but if it's FIAT, then I'm fine with KYC though since it is common to see someone donating a bigger bag of money with their name on it.

It is great that crypto can be used to transfer funds that is allocated to help needy people. It is better because they can save more money due to cheaper fees and faster transaction through cryptocurrency. I also see some people who are doing their own charity through crypto it is like hitting two birds with one stone, helpig others at the same time an exposure for crypto.

Since UNICEF's headquarters is situated in the City of New York I immediately went back to the rules of the BitLicense being required for the New York residents and businesses before they can even be involved in the crypto industry and I was surprise that they are not covered by such requirement since they will be receiving cryptocurrencies as a form of donation which is not covered by the BitLicense requirement. So maybe the city of New York have seen this coming or maybe UNICEF was part of the plan all along. I just hope that they have given the same treatment for their own residents conducting normal activities related to cryptocurrencies because they are treating them like a corporation conducting a big business in the crypto industry.

took them long enough. UNICEF France (https://news.bitcoin.com/unicef-france-accepts-donations-in-9-cryptocurrencies/) has been accepting cryptocurrency for a year now. not sure what took UNICEF Global so long to decide to accept cryptocurrency as a donation.
either way I am glad that they finally decided to add cryptocurrency to their list.

Have they had an increase in donations since accepting Bitcoin/cryptocurrencies? I just feel like this is not that much to get excited by because its not going to increase the overall use of Bitcoin and they are not going to get many donations in Bitcoin if any at all. People would prefer to donate money in cash because of the potential of Bitcoin rising in the future where as cash will probably fall in the future.

This is good for Bitcoin promotion. UNICEF is well known and prominet world organization so this is a big step. Probably this will attract new type of donators, probably also more young people. Hope they have regulated that well but the sad thing is that at the end they will need to exchange Bitcoin for fiat currencies in order to be able to really help children.

We can proudly say that this is really a great achievement. It will be very interesting to know how much donations will come from crypto, if it will be really significant, I think it will be a huge positive impact among people and bitcoin won't only be considered as a money for laundering and buying of illegal things but also it will show that bitcoin users are kind people too and bitcoin is used for good job too.
In overall really great news, can't wait to see statistics of upcoming monthes.

This is good news, but i wonder if it's possible to make anonymous donation with BTC or ETH? I don't see reason people would use BTC or ETH to make donation if they're forced to give away their identity where they'd have easier time by donating fiat instead.

I think you can donate anonymously, they have made this campaign for instance and there are anonymous donations listed on the bottom right:

https://www.givengain.com/cause/1577/campaigns/5369/

Complete list:

https://www.givengain.com/cause/1577/campaigns/5369/donations/

I don't know if this is only throught this interface-website thing but since the money is going to UNICEF I assume you can donate anonymously, so technically I don't see why they wouldn't accept BTC anonymously, the problem is if it comes from problematic addresses like addresses linked to criminal activity, it may be troublesome, this is why we need better fungibility. It shouldn't matter where the money came from if ultimately it goes into a good cause.

The best news for the past weeks, UNICEF is worldwide and for them accepting cryptocurrency is a big plus for the community, if things move very fats like this, we may see a very huge and robust competition among investors either institutions or individuals investors. The transparency brought to us by cryptocurrency through Blockchain is unspeakable and will attract the global community to fight against slavery, give power and freedom back to the masses.

Wow! A great news! We all know what UNICEF is and what UNICEF do to the world. They fight for children's rights and help them in their physiological needs and accepting donations through bitcoin and etherium will definitely help them. It is time for us, bitcoin enthusiasts and users to help UNICEF to make the world a better place for children, every crypto counts, even it is a small donation or a big one.

not really  . i dont know if what is unicef but if im not mistaken i think i heard that name before , a long time ago   . is this some kind of a charity or what ? but speaking of donations and charity  .  ive been using a payment app that has a service to donate to the charities , im saying that this news was not new or the first to implement this idea though this is still a verry good news because we crypto users can now make a donation in a less hassel way and more importantly in a private way  .

Great news for everyone - it can help UNICEF with donations, it can help people willing to donate with lower fees, and it can help BTC and ETH with exposure. Not to mention the fact that this is the first time that UN agency is actively and openly working with cryptocurrencies. Everybody wins. This isthe kind of developments that crypto needs.

Lack of financial transparency is a major reason for the corruption that is taking place around the globe. In several countries due to corrupt government the entire country have been suffering economic problems. When there is transparency automatically things will happen in the right way. Understanding the need and the underlying technology UNICEF have begun accepting bitcoin and ether.

This is actually a very good development for cryptos. UNICEF deciding to accept donations in BTC and ETH goes to extent to show that most of these huge organisations are now beginning to believe I'm cryptocurrencies and the change they could bring. Another good thing about this is that it opens more doors to receive more donations from all over the world.

Unicef is now expanding their options on where to receive their donations and this move is another acceptance of crypto currencies which is a good.

This big organization that is compose of United nations that is base on New York, United State will surely influence the other organization to move forward by starting to accept crypto currencies also. Unicef move is very wise also as they outsmart the banks fees.

I read this news last day and I was awed because an International Organization is jumping on on cryptocurrencies. Another plus for bitcoin and this move is good to community. Really, adaption is happening right in our front, considering this is large organization. It means that they trust  bitcoin, as another option for donations.

Pretty exciting news, probably one of the biggest charities in the world accepting crypto-currencies is definetly a big deal, over the past couple years we've started to see a lot of them come up.

How are they accepting BTC though? Is via a BTC payment processor that automatically turns it into USD, or do they have wallets and stuff set up and they are actually going to hold some crypto-currencies themselves?

This is a great news for the beneficiaries of UNICEF and crypto enthusiasts like us. If you will analyze, it is a win-win situation for all of us because poor chidlrens can now get more donations since the organization handling them have now wider accessibility from donators engaging with cryptocurrency and our cypto community is growing at the same time because this is considered as an adoption.

However if you are only a small holder and the amount you can offer is too small for the usual donations given to UNICEF then don't stop. That's okay, you can continue helping even in your own simple ways. Convert your crypto, buy food and other necessities then give to the needies in your area. That already means a lot :).

This has been discussed in a thread here in the forum. It's great to hear such news because it breaks the limitations for donations and would encourage more to donate to UNICEF. It would also promote cryptocurrencies and would raise the trust of people towards crypto since established institutions already had initiated the move to use them. Soon, more and more institutions would consider bitcoin and others that would further improve the technology and the market as well.

The fact that Unicef, American Red Cross and the UN World Food Programme accept bitcoin and other crypto as donations is a huge step, 'cause they are world known organisations. For aid organisations, cryptocurrencies make tracking donations easier, and have the potential to allow donors to see how their money is used. I am sure it will increase the amount if donations.

Amazing move by UNICEF! I see more and more giant organisations and companies starting to accept cryptocurrencies which brings a lot of awareness and increase adoption like crazy. Think of all the people with stacks of Bitcoins and Ethers. Of course they want to help people in need( not all of them obviously), and what other way to pave their way then to open a gateway for Bitcoin and Ethereum - the two most popular cryptocurrencies?

BIG THUMBS UP FOR UNICEF!  8)

I like it when Christopher Fabian, principal adviser at Unicef Innovation says this, he sees the great potential of the  Cryptocurrency for future donation and they are preparing for it, so in the next few years, we'll see branches of United Nations embracing Cryptocurrency for funding, and so with this Crypto has come along away.

This is indeed a great news. A Government related charity is a good addition for the ever expanding Bitcoin adoption.
Even the charities from the NGO's around the globe starts accepting Cryptocurrency as donations.

One of the best feature about this, is the convenience to directly donate with just one click and the transaction will directly sent to the blockchain, without the hassle of contacting/visiting your bank just to make a donation.

A lot of bad image were given to bitcoin for years because of illegal activities but this is one of the ways to help restore its image to the public that bitcoin isn't a bad thing. We can also do good with crypto.

I've read the link and I really liked what Fabian said “We see this as a piece of learning that we need to go through to prepare for the next decade,”.
Which is really true, we need to learn it to see the importance and its use that can be really helpful in the future.

It took a long time for them to accept bitcoin and ether. Using bitcoin in good or bad ways, there is nothing we can do because it is decentralized. These organizations like the UNICEF are always raising funds in any forms and in any ways. Bitcoin used by bad people doesn't mean that it is a bad currency too. Bitcoin's nature is just different. Fiat money are also being used by criminals either. Maybe UNICEF should also accept the other crypto currencies too.

It's about time that big non-profit organizations and humanitarian causes accept bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies for fast acceptance of funds and of course, to avoid loads of checks before one could even donate to them. I just hope that partner entities of UNICEF, especially the services and stores that they get their goods from do accept cryptocurrencies too for fast liquidation of the funds and turning it into the necessities needed by those they are helping. It might be far-fetched but we're getting there, slowly.

Utilizing existing facilities might be a good thing. The number of bitcoin users is increasing day by day and with this those behind crypto can more accurately donate their assets to the agency.
With crypto, donations can be sent directly to their wallets without intermediaries from other institutions. That in my opinion is pretty good. Right on target and easy for them.

That's the sad thing about donations, once it has received by the donee he/she can do whatever they want to spend it too even the things they didn't tell you. It's legal and they aren't required to show any kind of transparency to you since you already have given the donation to them. But if there is really big happening like what you are trying to say I think the best way to solve this is to go and find for transparency with the help of the U.N. since they are a part of it. Investigating their own branch would look bad though but if they really want to help the world become a better place I think they should do it especially now when they are accepting cryptocurrencies as a form of donation which makes tracking down transactions a little bit harder for us.

Has anyone actually tried to donate?

For Unicef USA I get this:

Same here:

When I try to access directly the org it redirects me to .de (based on ip probably) where I get:

How are they accepting BTC though? Is via a BTC payment processor that automatically turns it into USD, or do they have wallets and stuff set up and they are actually going to hold some crypto-currencies themselves?

I don't have a clue about the new donation system but checking the french donation address:
https://www.blockchain.com/cs/btc/address/3DDBbtXRb1kjGiLiFzU5hvtDiarV5DTTRz
it sure seems to be a wallet (maybe in an exchange) as it does not clear funds as soon as they get there as most 3rd party payments service do.

Hopefully they will make this easier if they indeed want to adopt it. Also it will make good pr if they get donations a lot with it. That might lift a little bit that criminality crypto association people sometimes have with bitcoin users.

It's very good and fulfilling to hear that a charitable institution is now accepting crypto as a donation for the welfare of the children. This will encourage more big institutions to open their eyes on crypto like bitcoin and ethereum as they can be of great help for those who are in need. It will also give way to bitcoin and ethereum as they will increase their volumes and their price value.

But who benefits from this ? Instead the UNICEF foundation ? I mean they accept bitcoin and they transform into cash ? or they simply use the bitcoin further to help ? This is a good question that I think we will no answer , don't get me wrong, I have only good words on UNICEF and I do hope they will use the donations coming with BTC and ETH to help a lot of people and families with everything they need , we are talking about the major sponsor of Barcelona ( City , not football team ) tho so news like this are always big and I do hope more foundations will pick up the trace and follow the example <3 .

I don't think that's always the case with charities, most of them have issues with that, maybe some of them have higher ups embezzling from them, maybe some of them aren't very good with taxes, but at least they are doing good work.

It's a marketing ploy for them to get extra funds, I'm sure they have been a lot of Bitcoin supporters that have given them a couple hundred dollars due to them accepting BTC now. I definetly am going to haha.

OK....
Has anyone actually tried to donate?

For Unicef USA I get this:
https://www.unicefusa.org/#donate

https://i.imgur.com/q1Bg9sU.png

Same here:
https://donate.unicefusa.org/page/contribute/help-save-childrens-lives-29161

When I try to access directly the org it redirects me to .de (based on ip probably) where I get:
https://www.unicef.de/spenden/jetzt-spenden?purpose=52250

https://i.imgur.com/jCUQ9e7.png

How are they accepting BTC though? Is via a BTC payment processor that automatically turns it into USD, or do they have wallets and stuff set up and they are actually going to hold some crypto-currencies themselves?

I don't have a clue about the new donation system but checking the french donation address:
https://www.blockchain.com/cs/btc/address/3DDBbtXRb1kjGiLiFzU5hvtDiarV5DTTRz
it sure seems to be a wallet (maybe in an exchange) as it does not clear funds as soon as they get there as most 3rd party payments service do.

Yeah, it's a weird donation system, I just got pretty confused and stopped midway when I was going to donate, due to the stuff you said above.

I think it's just bad implementation of code that isn't very user-friendly, and it was only required to do simple things (generate new address per customer, with specific BTC amount, address and QR code) so I'm not sure why they are facing these issues.

I looked at the address and looks like an exchange one, they probably sell all their BTC per a certain amount (eg, 10,000).

Thanks for sharing the link, but the "Anonymous donation" options isn't what i think since you need to enter email address (even though you could use throwaway email) and current payment options gives away your identity.

I doubt they only ask your email if cryptocurrency options is available and you chose it.

I think they have to comply with KYC to get donations, but im not sure if anonymous means really anonymous, or not shown in public so they have the data but just dont display it on their website.

In any case, it's a positive thing, the more means to get money in good causes the better, and those things usually get good press for Bitcoin which can't hurt.

took them long enough. UNICEF France (https://news.bitcoin.com/unicef-france-accepts-donations-in-9-cryptocurrencies/) has been accepting cryptocurrency for a year now.

That might not be the case, even if bitcoin will prevail in the future, there's no excuse that it can't be used to donate to UNICEF, it is still a currency and still has a value that will make the essence of donation effective. I think the main idea is to keep in mind that international organization now is opening their field to adopting cryptocurrency and bitcoin which a good news for us hoping for the best in crypto.

No, I don't think it's an issue with KYC or AML options, most charities don't really have to conform to these that closely since they aren't a payment processor or an exchange.

If they did want to have KYC restrictions they would have likely set up ID verification and other features, but I think the email is just a way for them to contact you if there are issues or send you their brochure, or other emails.

this is good news .. I'm very glad to hear that. this proves that cryptocurrency is not only identical as a tool for illegal transactions. when cryptocurrency is in the right hands it can be used for goodness. Unicef accepts cryptocurrency very helpful for people who want to donate their money but are hampered by national borders. by using crypto transactions will be faster, easier and cheaper. I hope that in the future many humanitarian agencies will also accept cryptocurrency donations.

Use of cryptocurrencies allows children’s agency to bypass fees of moving cash overseas quickly and increase financial transparency.

Read more about it by clicking here. (https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2019/oct/09/unicef-now-accepting-donations-through-bitcoin-and-ether)

This is great new, the adoption by institutional investors seems painstakingly slow but never the less, it''s still adoption. The more the larger institutions start to become more acceptable toward cryptocurrency, the stronger and more solid the crypto economy becomes. The banks and other major centers of money just may be the last to actually make the turn around, and start adopting.

That is a good help to the bitcoin itself as well. That's really good to hear so that bitcoin will become more popular all over the world because Unicef is also well known all over the world. It's really good to help Unicef and to cryptocurrencies like bitcoin and ethereum as well to gain more investors. People who want to donate anonymously will also encourage to give because they use bitcoin and ether. I hope all establish like this not only for NGOs.

Wow! This is good news for us and Unicef. Because it is easier to reach out to those in need. Hopefully other companies will follow this style of collecting/donation as well. I am sure that in the next few months bitcoin will again have a demad and I am sure more and more people will trust BTC and it can be successful in the future.
