Title: Sent BCH to Electrum wallet. Lost in Transition...
Post by: xavierkff on October 09, 2019, 11:05:30 PM
Hoping someone can help a noob.

I sent BCH to my Electrum wallet from Coinbase. Which, I now understand, only receives BTC.  The source, Coinbase Support, says that once it leaves their platform they have no control.

Is there any way I can recover the BCH Value?

Would appreciate any help or guidance.

Yes. Download Electron Cash[1] and open your wallet with it. It's an Electrum fork for Bitcoin Cash, so it has the same features and interface, but for BCH.

Yes. Download Electron Cash[1] and open your wallet with it.
To expand on this a little... you will need to use "File -> Open" from within Electron Cash... or click the "Choose..." button on the wizard when you first open it:

You will then need to browse to your Electrum wallet directory (refer: https://electrum.readthedocs.io/en/latest/faq.html#where-is-my-wallet-file-located) and select the wallet file you wish to open.

Do as Tryninja said.

Save your Seed (backup phrase) that was generated in Electrum. This is how you are going to recover it in Electrum Cash.

Both HCP and TryNinja are correct but they forgot an important instruction.

MAKE A BACKUP OF YOUR WALLET FILE (default_wallet) BEFORE DOING ANYTHING.

There is also an option to recover BCH by importing private key from the address that is holding this coin. To do that just click on Address tab -> Righ Click on address you send BCH -> Select private key -> Copy paste that key in ElectronCash in process of creating new wallet  - just select option "Import Bitcoin addresses or private keys".

Depending on what type address you have in Electrum (BTC), legacy (starting with 1 - native segwit bc1 - or nested segwit started with 3, you need to select the right option in the final step. After your wallet is sync, it will show correct balance.
